ANIME UPDATE V2 50
Happy Number 50! Expect another lookback post to soon follow.
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 - After the first episode ended with the world breaking apart at Mirai’s say so, this next one shows us Tokyo getting demolished by the recurring quake, as swathes of people panic and flee to find shelter from the disaster, others are searching for exits or for lost companions, while others still are getting buried by the falling debris. Through all of this, Mirai keeps calling out for Yuki, terrified that her little brother might’ve been among those who perished, as she recieves help from the woman named Mari. Yuki turns out alright (for now!), but the ordeal was so harrowing and stressful to watch. Aftershocks aside, things seem to be settling back down by the end.
Hunter x Hunter - Watched the final battle with Team Genthru, fought by Gon, Killua, and Biscuit. Killua’s win was fairly easy and reliant on the yo-yo techinques he’d mastered, and Bisky’s even easier as we got to see her transform into her Super Woman true form, Gon’s fight with Genthru was more of a challenge and more of a frustration since at least twice Gon insisted on pushing himself hard as possible against Genthru’s deadliest moves rather than sticking to the agreed upon plan for capturing him. But at least Gentru was defeated, with his life and those of his teammates even being spared as our hero trio aquired the cards they need to finally beat this game.
Fruits Basket - Just Part 2 of the Rin Sohma story I left on. Certainly not as heavy or memorable as the episode preceding it, especially due to Student Council Antics resurfacing at the school, but still very informative and valuable in how it bonds Tohru and Rin closer together, as both girls want more than anything else to break the Zodiac curse on the Sohma Family. Towards the end, Tohru has a nightmare that flashes back to how her mother left her the morning of the fatal accident, and Rin wishes for Tohru to find someone to love who can save her from her despair, just like how Haru did for her.
Re:ZERO - As I’d expected, Subaru is in a major slump following Emilia cutting ties with him, as he now stays at Karsten Manor and trains with Wilhelm. Reinhart tries to reconcile with him, and hopes he and Julius could bury the hatchet too, but Subaru’s too much of a proud and petulant shithead to want to go along with that. I liked getting more from Crusch and Felix, meeting Otto Suwen, and getting to see Subaru’s darker nature continue to grow as even Rem ends up leaving him on his own. But that also ties into the one thing that was not landing for me - Rem. Why is she here? She wasn’t kicked out of Emilia’s Camp, so why be with Subaru at Karsten’s? What about Ram? Did we not just have an arc that stressed how important and inseparable Ram and Rem are to each other? Yes, Rem opened her heart up to Subaru more, but there was nothing to suggest she now wanted to be like a loyal pet to him! So I just couldn’t get into whatever was going on with Rem towards the end because I was confused by her very presence here the whole time. But the last scene was appropriately disturbing. What IS this cult?
Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works - Since this anime is really a second animated adaptation of Fate/Stay Night, we’re now at the point of retreading the ground covered before in the Studio Deen anime, with the entire meeting with Kirei at his church and then the episode ends on Ilya and Berserker’s appearance just like what happened in the first anime. The best part was getting to see the scene, or rather hear the scene with Crispin Freeman as Kirei, he’s just as great here as he was in Fate Zero and fits the character as well as Jamieson Price, if not better. Hope for more of him this time!
Symphogear G - Watched the two special gag OVAs that’s just a bunch of different silly shorts depiciting cute and funny stuff that happened to the characters at certain points of time. OVA 1 is set almost entirely in the time gap between the grand finale of the first season and the last scene of that same season, while the second covered different points in time of the G season. Both were very fun, and I especially like how Maria benefits from the more comedic bits.
MAR - Since there were no more rounds in the War Games ever dubbed, I just sped through watching the remainder of the dubbed anime, which featured one breather episode with some important set-up with Ian (and Rapunzel finally getting killed off, YAY!), two filler episodes starring Alviss and Dorothy respectively, a four episode filler arc in Alain’s training domain, and the finale appropriately being the  “final battle with Phantom”. I put that in quotations ‘cause it turns out to be as much a final battle as Jack’s with Aku was in the “Aku’s Fairy Tales” episode of Samurai Jack - it didn’t really happen! It was All Just A Dream! After pulling a rip-off like that on me, I can’t say I’m gonna miss watching this show. It’s good fun, but I can find better.
Gintama - Tatsuma Sakamoto was mentioned before, but it wasn’t until this episode that we finally got to meet him, learn of his past history with Gin, and understand what he’s all about. We also meet his business manager Mutsu, who is clearly from the same alien clan as Kagura but this isn’t addressed at this point on the show. The one other most noteworthy thing about this episode is that it’s one where this corny, minimal effort dub really hindered it, as I had to hear Gintoki’s name pronounced “Gintucky” over and over and over again.
AND
Akudama Drive - Finished the series with its entire second half. This was a wild ride from start to finish, got a bit heavy in some places towards the end, and concluded with all the main characters sans Brother and Sister dying. That’s about as much I can say about that.
