Lyon Ch F: Felipe Meligeni R. Alves [8] def. Alexander Ritschard 6-4, 0-6, 7-6(7) Match Stats
📸 ATP/WTA Joint App
Even though Felipe's level dipped in the second set, it took a while for him to regain it, especially since some critical points came from the baseline. Pacing then became an issue, since it resulted in Ritschard's chances and its conversion in the second set. Even if the latter's forehand winners could also result in Felipe's match point save, it was not enough in countering Felipe's aggression. Furthermore, this resulted in Felipe's 56% break point conversion rate, especially since he was the more stable player in the first set.
Even if Felipe scored 5 aces to Ritschard's 3, landing 76% of his first serves in, he could still win 65% of his points from there, 3% more than Ritschard. Although Ritschard appeared clutch by saving 63% of the break points he saved, including the ones from the second set where he ended up dominating, Felipe ended up appearing more stable in the tie-breaker, creating more chances as Ritschard's return game fell apart. Interestingly, even if both players double-faulted four times, Ritschard still excelled at his second serves by winning 9% more points than Felipe, despite its dependency was not sufficient to prevail in this match.
This secured Felipe's third career Challenger title after the Sao Paulo Challenger (2019) and Iasi Challenger (2021), putting himself to a career-high ranking of 129 according to the current state of the live rankings. Ritschard's upcoming title since last year's Vilnius Challenger had to wait, but it could bring some refreshed form after several moments.

Continuing in Lyon…
The third set was an entirely different world in comparison to the first and second sets, especially in terms of pacing. While both players had their own chances, the turning point started at the ninth game of the set, which went. onward until the tie-breaker.
In the ninth game, Felipe broke at the expense of Ritschard’s forehand error, which was also the gate-opener in response to Felipe’s forehand (to be 2 points ahead) (5-4). However, the first opportunity to serve for the match flew away because of his error sprees (predominantly from his forehand side right donw 3 break points) (5-5), likely stemming from tightness.
Two consecutive holds later, a close tie-break happened to secure the championship. Ritschard initially had his moments, but Felipe’s forehands were the differential until he had 2 match point at 6-4. However, for the same reason (forehand winner), Ritschard saved Felipe’s second match point. It took Ritschard’s lob error for Felipe’s other match point, which was converted at the expense of the former’s backhand error. As a result, Felipe took the third set 7-6(7) and secured his third career Challenger title.

Somehow, in Lyon…
The turntables occurred once Felipe went on an error spree, especially from his forehand side. After the error resulted in Ritschard’s early break in 2-0, it carried through some other games, where Ritschard successfully doubled the break at the expense of Felipe’s forehand that went up in the air, to his disappointment.
Despite this set not being a one-way traffic, the critical points were not there for Felipe. Ritschard kept firing his shots until he secured a set point, where it was converted at the expense of Felipe’s double fault. The question on whether this level dip affected the third set remained…

Coming to Lyon Challenger…
Almost simultaneously, the first set between eighth seed Felipe Meligeni R. Alves, who dug deep to defeat Alejandro Moro Canas in 3 tight sets, and Alexander Ritschard, who yesterday defeated Gabriel Debru 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals. While Felipe could be seen as the more aggressive person in this match-up, this match required both players to stay balanced in constructing their points, which happened to be a distinct rollercoaster at the end of the day.
To start, Felipe had a forehand winner to secure his break point before he eventually broke to 3-2, only to be broken back at the expense of his forehand error (3-3). It took another two consecutive holds until Felipe secured the break of serve because of Ritschard’s attempt to go down-the-line in response to the former’s forehand, but it went too wide instead for the break point (5-4).
Felipe then successfully took the first set 6-4, even if he had to survive several break points along the way. While notably Ritschard’s forehand winner also fumbled one of Felipe’s set points, the break point came from Felipe’s backhand that went up in the air. A failed slice secured Felipe’s latest set point, followed by Ritschard’s forehand error for the set point conversion.

Oeiras 4 Ch SF: Aleksandar Vukic [6] def. Felipe Meligeni Rodrigues Alves 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 Match Stats
📸 ATP Challenger Livestream (via website)
The margin in this match was thin, but A. Vukic managed to regain his point construction and maximized his chances better. He might only have 7 opportunities to break, but some of his 5 breaks happened as a result of his shot winners, including a forehand winner to break for the match. Felipe did well, except his backhand was too error-prone for A. Vukic to go after.
On the other hand, each player had their own strengths with regards to their service games. Backed up with 5 aces, A. Vukic had outstanding first serves by winning 72% of his points from there, while even if both players double-faulted twice, Felipe won 8% more points from his second serves than A. Vukic. Indeed, the service games efficiency count in this match.
In the finals, A. Vukic will face the winner between Nicolas Moreno de Alboran and Facundo Diaz Acosta, which match is still running as this was written. It could be interesting to see how deep he could go, adding at least another final to the note after a wild month, which put landed him to the World No. 95 (for the time being) as a reward: Seoul Challenger runner-up, Gwangju Challenger second round, Busan Challenger champion, and at least another final in Oeiras 4. Breathtaking.

Traveling back to Oeiras…
It all came down to the pressure points once again. After A. Vukic went after Felipe’s backhand along the way, with a breaking game to start the third set, the former once again showed his intuitiveness with a forehand winner for his break point to break back 2-2 in the second set.
Five consecutive holds later, Vukic came up with a cross-court forehand winner to take the third set 6-4 right when he had 2 match points at the expense of Felipe’s errors. Not only this secured his finals berth, but also secured his Top 100 entrance after a wild run during the past month, starting with the South Korean Challengers.

By the way, in Oeiras’ 2nd set…
Twists and turns happened. There, after breaking at the expense of Felipe’s shot errors, A. Vukic created a stunning forehand winner in response to Felipe’s volley (where the latter commended) before he held his service game to 4-1. Three consecutive holds later, A. Vukic had the opportunty to serve for the second set.
However, the opportunity fumbled at the expense of his backhand error, which shot was sought after one another during the match. By then, consistency became the next question in line after the Australian ended up breaking for the set, especially after an erratic service game from Felipe. Ending that error spree was the forehand rush, hence this match went to the distance.

By the way, in Oeiras…
The singles semifinals started between sixth seed Aleksandar Vukic and Felipe Meligeni Rodrigues Alves. In one way or another, the first set became a point construction contest, with those maintaining the pacing well would prevail in this set. Both players had several break points, but none of them got materialized until the end of this set.
Initially, Felipe’s forehand winner created his first break point of the ninth game before another save. He came up with a volley two shots after his forehand for his second break point of that game, before A. Vukic’s error secured him the first chance to serve for the set. It was the first chance because the Australian broke back thanks to a working volley, equalizing the score to 5-5.
At the expense of A. Vukic’s backhand error, Felipe utilized the baseline well to convert his other break point, hence he had the second opportunity to serve for the set. Without further ado, because of A. Vukic’s forehand error, Felipe took the first set 7-5. These kinds of return depths could be necessary in the second set as well… (to be continued)
