People keep asking me how my 4th of July was, and I keep telling them but none of them are ready to hear that I was up at 6 a.m. Running an orange Dumbass to the Emergency Vet to find out he has a Forever Disease that makes his food cost roughly $10/lb. I just spent $45 on a 4 lb bag of magic cat food (and a further $13 for a box of cheaper food suggested as long as he also used this, which still figured to be cheaper than just buying the canned version of the Magic Food) because this idiot is predisposed to dying.
He has Allergies, Anxiety (which we knew, but it had suddenly gotten Worse) and Feline Idiopathic Cystitis; which I know is fundamentally different from Interstitial Cystitis in humans, but the symptoms and names are similar enough that, if it wasn't so fucking miserable, I would think it was funny as hell that we have matching diagnoses.
But! So far his Feliway collar has been super helpful, and I think the new food and antibiotics might be helping, he's still sequestered (rooming with me bc we're Plague Buddies now). As soon as we can afford the fish version of his food it should help his allergies ease up a bit, but the smallest bag they make of that is 8.5 lbs. At about $10/lb. After I'd just maxed my care credit and my brother helped me pay for the rest on a $360 vet bill.
The amount of love and anguish I carry around over these creatures cannot be healthy but I actually don't think I could live any other way. (Probably, I need my antidepressants, been having that thought on and off already)

New cat urine test kit screens for hematuria via noninvasive procedure
The cat urine test kit. (Photo courtesy of Chulalongkorn University). Researchers from Chulalongkorn University (Chula) in Bangkok, Thailand have developed a cat urine test kit for the detection of urinary tract diseases that cat owners can use. The kit screens for hematuria, which can indicate kidney disease, gallstones—or cholelithiasis—, cystitis, or other diseases related to […]

Omg your bb is so cute! Excuse me while i blast thru your entire blog! I haven't made it past September yet so if this is answered earlier sorry but who is mimi? As in is she a newly adopted sister or did you join households with someone and make a Brady bunch?
Hello and thank you!!! I think I've answered this sparingly or rambled a bit in tags? But nothing outright!
Mimi ( Monte Cristo ) is actually the OG cat of the house! She's a 5 year old rescue from the local SPCA. When she was adopted, she was actually the younger, annoying sibling to the elderly resident of the house (that I never got to meet).
I moved here 2 1/2 years ago ( i moved 5000 miles from my hometown to live with my best friend, Mimi's mom!!! )
Croutons showed up last year in august in our backyard and kinda didn't want to leave? It was a slow process to get him inside (and keep him here - he found a way onto the roof and into my bedroom through the window on the second floor and did that for a month). But once we did he got shaved bald and lost his balls <3
We've had to keep them seperated for... quite some time? It's been almost a year, I think. Mimi has feline idiopathic cystitis, meaning her bladder gets inflamed when she's stressed, so it's been a VERY slow introduction between the two of them.
Mimi is NOT keen on being a big sister and Crout wants to play SO BAD. Right now we're letting them feel each other out (by that I mean keeping an eye on Mimi to make sure her hissing and swatting isn't going beyond her establishing proper boundaries). They did play with the same shoe string today and rolled around in catnip together!!! Mimi was grumbling the entire time while having fun <3
We also have a little bird named PeePee (Toothpaste)!! He's a green cheek conure and he likes to scream a lot

Why do boy cats just always have bathroom problems. Growing up I had girl cats and they literally both never had bathroom issues, they were far moodier and a little bit mean, but they were chill af.
Now I have all boy cats (3 of em), and every year at least ONE of them has a bathroom issue, like either they randomly get a UTI (he got into a dry food and gorged himself and then didn’t drink enough water), one of them has chronic constipation issues that we’ve now been treating for 2 years (he will literally decide to not go to the bathroom if we piss him off), and then the dreaded “idiopathic feline cystitis” aka the vet says ‘its not a UTI or a Blockage and nothing else is showing up 🤷’ and then they don’t even give you antibiotics or any other medicine for the kitty and just send you on your way with a ‘he’s probably just feeaked out by something new!’ (apparently having a new plant in the house is ‘stress inducing’).
I love my kitties tho, they are very sweet. Just very expensive 😭
Also writing this because I had to wake up at 6 am and go to the vet.

Alphy update
Tumblr media
This is my friend Flynn's cat, as you may remeber. I have another update from her about lil alphy.
"hi guys, i just wanted to ask for help in regards to alphy's medical expenses as he has been hospitalized for the 3rd time this month due to feline idiopathic cystitis. unfortunately this disease is chronic and his medical bills will keep piling up, which we unfortunately can't afford. he's getting his blood checked and an ultrasound for his bladder, which will hopefully shed more light in regards to his health right now. i appreciate all the help we can get with this, and as always, every reblog and like counts so if you can, please spread the word! you can donate thru https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/amunetis, and as always, thank you so much for the support." If you have any questions you can ask Flynn at https://twitter.com/altergardens
Alphy is such a sweet little kitty and means the world to Flynn and everyone who knows him. I only know him through pictures, since Flynn lives in the Phillipeans, but he's such a guy.

if the bladder is inflamed from stress and the poor lad being bullied its probably specifically feline idiopathic cystitis 👍
Yes, the vet mentioned this! I'm hoping the anxiety meds help but the bullying has been such a struggle; it's been 9 months since he came to us and 3 of the other 5 just never took to him despite him never starting anything. Two of them (the girls) will just attack him if he goes within two feet of them, and the other (the oldest male) has a dominance thing with him. We've tried feliway, rotating box/bed locations to mix up territory, feeding treats together, but no peace allowed on this earth, they hate him for his message and doctrine (saying "wawoo" a lot)

cw pet illness
one of my cats is having urinary problems. emergency vet diagnosed it as feline idiopathic cystitis, possibly crystals, pending a urinalysis, but no blockage. they gave him pain meds there & some to go home, and he's already gotten one dose at home. he's still urinating, but i can tell it's painful, he can't seem to settle down, keeps trying to groom the area, tries to walk with his legs spread wide. ive given him extra bowls of water, put extra water in his wet food, get up to pet him whenever possible, but otherwise there's not much i can do.
and it's in the wee hours of the mornin and im just. so freaked out and tired. he won't settle and so im having trouble settling. my guts have been whacko mode all day. pelvic pain engaged. a general flare of symptoms, and if i dont rest well enough to recover from having to leave the house today, it's possible i could crash. and lack of sleep is not helping.
but i just.... they told me to keep a watchful eye on him, that if he starts straining, isn't urinating, if he's acting lethargic or vomiting, then i need to bring him back. bc that's an emergency, could be an obstruction, could be fatal. how can i, who needs 9-12 hours of sleep a day, sleep? especially when my boy is pacing around? what if he starts showing one of the emergency signs and im asleep? i know i need to be well rested so i can actually be there for him if he needs it, but my exhausted and stressed brain is making that difficult.

Have you heard of stress cystitis (also called feline idiopathic cystitis)? My housemate’s cat was diagnosed with it recently, it’s a super weird quirk of cat biology that looks very similar to a UTI. More severe cases involve bloody urine, but less severe cases just involve peeing frequently in strange locations around the house instead of in their tray. Very sensitive cats who are prone to it can get a flareup just from like, furniture being moved around or loud strangers coming over. Unless it’s already been ruled out (or if he’s a super chill cat who doesn’t stress easily), from what you’ve described it sounds like there’s a chance that could be why Arthur’s experiencing? There’s special foods for it and just switching diets has really helped my housemate’s cat.
Yeah actually I was planning on talking to Doc abt this tmrw. It had just seemed behavioral at first but the more I’m watching him and the longer I’ve lived with him it definitely seems abnormal to me. He drinks so much water and pees excessively. I’m crossing my fingers it’ll be something simple and we can get it under control and then he’ll pee in the boxes like a good boy

This probably should've been the first thing I put on this blog haha. Everyone, this is Oscar. He's a gorgeous nearly 10 year old cat (will be 10 on Oct 7th) who my partner and I adopted last week. This is the photo they had of him up at the NHSPCA. He'd been there for almost 2 months when we adopted him. We were told it was surprising that he attached to us so quickly because he usually hates adults and only likes kids.
Tumblr media
Here he is as of a couple days ago. Within the now full week this boy's been home, he's opened up so much and is almost a completely different cat than the one we met at the NHSPCA. An absolutely adorable little lovebug who has such a personality. He loves doing little walks around the apartment (my partner and I call them his "rounds") and rubbing all over boxes and items we still have to put up after having moved into this apartment 2 years ago. We've learned he loves having his butt scratched, right above his tail like a dog.
Tumblr media
He's a chunky guy too, the SPCA told us he was about 15lbs. When looking at his previous vet records we were given when adopting him, he has apparently lost some. He was at one point a whopping 16lbs. We're doing our best to get him more active and running around now that he's getting comfortable here (as cute as he is being a fat little guy).
Tumblr media
He has FIC (feline idiopathic cystitis), meaning that if he gets really stressed or if he has a bad diet his urine begins crystalizing for unknown reasons. It also has an unknown connection to an inflamed bladder. He's got a special urinary diet that he's fed to help maintain it along with just trying to keep him as entertained and relaxed as possible. My partner and I are thinking that one of his previous owners weren't keeping him on his diet which may have caused him to gain water weight. Along with being stressed about other animals in the house, which not getting along with them was why this poor sweet boy had been surrendered.. We're thinking we've got to be at least his 3rd owners, as his vet records only dated back to 2019 from the person who surrendered him to the NHSPCA. Judging based on his demeanor we're thinking his previous owners were the second family and his first owner(s) was probably an older person who wanted to have a cat around for company.
Tumblr media
We're honored to be this special little guy's forever home and I'm excited to personally take you all along the journeys this guy gets us into. He's such a little character and has absolutely been a joy to have around.

Understanding Blood in Cat Urine: Stress and Health Insights
Cats are beloved companions, but their well-being is often a mystery to many pet owners. One alarming issue that can arise is the presence of blood in a cat's urine, which may be linked to stress. Understanding the signs and causes is vital for any cat owner. Let’s explore why this distressing situation can occur and how you can help your furry friend!
Do Cats Pee Blood When Stressed?
Identifying Symptoms of Stress 🐾 Stress in cats can manifest in a variety of ways. If you notice your cat displaying behavioral changes—such as hiding, aggression, or excessive grooming—it could signal stress. Additionally, physical symptoms like changes in appetite or litter box habits can also be a red flag.
Unpacking the Causes 🩸 When cats are under stress, they may develop a condition known as hematuria, where blood appears in their urine. This can occur due to various factors, including: - Feline Idiopathic Cystitis (FIC): A painful bladder condition often exacerbated by stress. - Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): These infections can be triggered by stress and can cause inflammation, leading to blood in the urine. - Cluttered Spaces: A stressful environment, with too much noise or other pets, can affect your cat’s emotional health.
How to Help Your Cat ❤️ It’s essential to maintain a calm and supportive environment. Here are some tips: - Maintain Hydration: Ensure your cat has access to fresh water at all times to prevent urinary problems. - Consult Veterinarian: If you notice blood in your cat’s urine, consult a veterinarian for a thorough examination and appropriate treatment options. - Fostering Calmness: Create a serene space for your cat, free from loud noises or disturbances.
By keeping an eye on your furry friend’s behavior and health, you can help them avoid stress-related health issues. If you suspect your cat might be experiencing anxiety, refer to this thorough guide on cat stress blood urine原因 to better understand the signs, symptoms, and preventive measures. 🐱💕
Your cat depends on you for care and comfort, so taking steps to address stress can significantly improve their quality of life!

Yuna is in the vet for the second time this month today.
Everything seems fine except she might still have blood in her pee. She has FIC (feline idiopathic cystitis) so it’s to be expected when she’s stressed, but it had been in remission for a while.
Being a crazy cat mom- helicopter parent with health anxiety is not for the weak guys.
She is being held for a urinalysis, and I am so used to just having her here, it’s hard for me to get through the day without her nearby in the house.
She really is my emotional support animal.
As much as ppl look down on that title, it’s a noble job. And animals do it for their humans everyday without even thinking about it.
I tend to dissociate to get through hard days, and I know I’m doing that rn. Journaling is keeping me tethered to reality since she’s not here to do it.
I’m probably being dramatic.
I hope I’m being dramatic.
Mixing ashwaganda and SSRIs is also probably not a good idea guys I don’t think I should recommend anyone do it.
But if you’re as unstable as I am, maybe it doesn’t matter.
So I’m just doing that social media app shuffle, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, Tumblr on repeat to keep myself occupied and not spiraling.
Thanks for waiting with me

Prevention and Treatment of Feline Idiopathic Cystitis
Preventing and treating feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC) is crucial for the well-being of cats. FIC is a common urinary disorder that can cause discomfort and pain. To prevent FIC, ensure the cat has access to fresh water, a balanced diet, and stress reduction. If the cat develops FIC symptoms like frequent urination or straining, consult a veterinarian promptly. Treatment may involve dietary changes, stress management, and medication to alleviate pain and inflammation. Early intervention is key to managing FIC and providing feline companions with a comfortable and healthy life.
