DJ VRYWVY on the Noche Buena Traditions She Holds Near and Dear

When Spotify released its end-of-year data for the most streamed artists, songs, and albums this year, one thing was very clear: Latin music held its place at the top of the charts. Bad Bunny, Peso Pluma, Feid, Karol G, Junior H, Shakira, Rosalía, Ana Castela, and Kali Uchis were among the most streamed artists in the world. While major stars dominated the charts, other Latine entertainers like DJ VRYWVY, whose real name is Val Garcia, were at work, uplifting Latin music in venues throughout the nation. For DJ VRYWVY the shift in mainstream attention to Latin music raises feelings of pride. "You know, seeing Karol G, she just did her "Mañana Será Bonito Tour" in Medellín, and everyone is just taking everything back home and it makes me so proud," she says. "They came from there, but they took it everywhere. What are the odds of that? I started thinking to myself, what are the odds of me doing this? I wasn't supposed to be here. I was born in Mexico City." It was in Mexico that her fondness for music came to be. DJ VRYWVY spent hours watching music videos of Britney Spears, Pharrell, and Nelly on MTV. When her family moved to Dallas when she was in second grade, her love of hip-hop grew as she began to listen to mixes on the city's hip-hop stations like 97.9 The Beat. Unbeknownst to her, her mind was already at work fusing the two worlds. Years later, when she began to teach herself how to DJ, her love of hip-hop and Latin music began to mold into one. "I call it VRYBILINGUAL," she says. "Mixing those two worlds together: reggaetón and hip-hop, cumbia and R&B. I take you to those two worlds and mesh them to create a one-of-a-kind experience." Pulkka

1- What’s the maximum amount of time your character can sit still with nothing to do? 

Not very long at all. You’d think after several hundred years among nomadic Whiphid society Pulkka would be happy to just do nothing, but she always has to be doing something. Her favourite distractions are fixing or modifying parts of the ship and baking.

4 - How easy is it to earn their trust? 

Pulkka has levels of trust. Everyone gets a baseline level of doubt-benefit at first meeting, and they have to prove through their actions if they’re worthy of more. It used to be easier -- Whiphid society is transient, and bonds are built on the common need for survival. Leaving Toola was an eye-opening experience for her, and forced her to reevaluate how she related to people.

5 - How easy is it to earn their mistrust?

You have ONE chance. UNO. It doesn’t matter how much of her trust you’ve gained, if you betray it even once you’re back to square one, and it will be much harder to regain what you lost.

26 - What is their preferred mode of transportation? 

She’s very fond of walking, although that option is pretty rare on most populated worlds -- the distances are just too massive and there’s not enough time. She’s very fond of swoop-riding, which isn’t a thing on Toola.

Feid

11 - How do they cope with confusion (seek clarification, pretend they understand, etc)? 

Feid is very short on patience. On a good day, she’ll ask for clarification. On a bad day, confusion makes her annoyed and she can be rude -- which is a little counterproductive.

27 - What causes them to feel dread?

Feid absolutely hates going back on her word, even to herself. Walking back into a situation she told herself she would never again face, or having to admit that she can’t hold up her end of a deal, are the worst experiences in her life.

28 - Would they prefer a lie over an unpleasant truth?

Truth, every time. Even the worst truth is preferable to blissful ignorance.

29 - Do they usually live up to their own ideals?

Most of the time. Feid doesn’t really expect much from others, and she’s much harder on herself, but she’s also realistic in her expectations

Tovari

6 - Do they consider laws flexible, or immovable?

Flexible. Tovari recognises that laws exist for a reason, but those reasons cannot always account for every unexpected situation.

7 - What triggers nostalgia for them, most often? Do they enjoy that feeling? 

The smells of particular foods or the brand of cologne her granddad wore or the musty wax of children’s art pastels, and the opening tune of a particular holoseries she used to watch. Tovari loves it -- her childhood was far from perfect, but she has far more fond memories than bad ones.

15 - How do they speak? Is what they say usually thought of on the spot, or do they rehearse it in their mind first? 

Tovari considers what she says very carefully unless she gets excited about something. She’s learned to just not say anything at those times, if there’s something important going on.

17 - Are they easily embarrassed? 

When she was a child, yes, but she learned to find the humour in her missteps -- there’s no situation that can’t be resolved with an apology and an earnest conversation

18 - What embarrasses them? 

Misinterpreting other people’s meanings and intents. Tovari hates miscommunication and will absolutely not leave an uncertain matter unaddressed, if she can help it

20 - If they were asked to explain the difference between romantic and platonic or familial love, how would they do so? 

For Tovari, romantic love is a fun rush that rarely lingers; it’s meant to be seized and enjoyed while it lasts. Platonic love and familial love are almost the same: friends are like family, and if family isn’t your friend, it isn’t family.

Drone nace buscando un trap, un R&B, quizás un rap, pero siempre manteniendo su base reggaeton que atraviesa a sus seguidores en el corazón. Para FABRO es importante que cada sonido de su música genere una sensación.

Primer Show Oficial: El artista se presentará el sábado 5 de octubre a las 13 hs en el escenario de la plaza Usina del Arte en el Festival Ciudad Emergente 2019 donde presentará sus dos singles –“Un Lugar” y “Drone”– y canciones inéditas que sorprenderán a los nuevos oyentes.

Al oírlo cantar, la piel se eriza. Este joven talento de pequeño llegaba a notas tan agudas que lo ponían a cantar junto a las soprano en el coro de la escuela. Gracias a la abundante movida influencer global se animó a surgir en las redes con un cover de “A Puro Dolor” de Son By Four que tuvo no menos de 40.000 reproducciones en instagram y a partir de allí no para. A tan solo un año en el país y gracias a su privilegiada técnica vocal, pudo captar la atención de otros músicos reconocidos como EMME (actriz, cantante e hija de Lito Vitale), Mery Granados, Josefina Silveyra, Stefano Marocco (semifinalista de la Voz México 2017), Ramiro Molina (guitarrista de Diego Torres), Axel Introini (tecladista de Tini Stoessel, Dante Spinetta, Catriel y Paco Amoroso), Francisco Alduncin (baterista de Soy Luna, Ca7riel y Paco Amoroso, Emme, entre otros) entre otros y ser el cantante principal del tributo a Luis Miguel “El Sol”. Además cuenta con la producción de Facundo Yalve (productor de Ca7riel, Wos, Paco Amoroso y Dakillah).

Las influencias de FABRO se centran en el R&B, pop, reggaeton, trap, baladas, pagode, funky brasileño, salsa (en la cual dió sus primeros pasos como cantante) y boleros. Dentro de sus artistas de referencia actual se encuentran Drake, Sech, Feid, Post Malone, Bad Bunny, Ty Dolla, Justin Bieber, e inclusive influencias brasileñas como Gaab y Ferrugem.

Fabrizio Bufalino Mora cuenta que FABRO surgió del apodo que le puso su equipo de fútbol de su ciudad natal, Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela. Desde muy chico se interesó por la música. A sus cuatro años ya estaba probando distintos instrumentos pero a los ocho años tuvo su primer acercamiento a la teoría musical. Para navidad pidió un teclado y su papá le enseñó sus primeros acordes. Desde ese entonces comenzó a tocar y a cantar. Además se anotó en el coro del colegio. A los once años comenzó a tener sus propios proyectos musicales junto a su hermano y primos pasando por distintos géneros desde el garaje hasta el reggaeton. En ese momento comenzó a producir sus primeros temas de bajo presupuesto (con un mic y una computadora). El potencial en su voz se podía notar, por lo tanto al graduarse comenzó a tomar clases con uno de los tenores líricos más importantes de Venezuela –David Hidalgo–  donde FABRO define que en ese tiempo descubrió su voz en todos los aspectos, y comenzó a explotar su capacidad artística. En 2018 decidió mudarse a Buenos Aires con el objetivo de aprovechar uno de los polos culturales de latinoamérica.

I could've gone crazy and done it with my 4 POV characters, but nope, let's keep things simple. I’ll do it with Feid Familier as she was the first OC I created for Rising Queens.

1. What was the first element of your OC that you remember considering (name, appearance, backstory, etc.)?

Her nickname: the Black Witch, which allude to the clothes she wear. And her magic related to the manipulation of time and space.

2. Did you design them with any other characters/OCs from their universe in mind?

She was design with Joy Familier and Saphyr Céline. They originally were three friends that life and personal goals had separated. Their dynamic has changed since then.

3. How did you choose their name?

Technically, she was not named Feid, but Faith. I decided to try to find something that would not sound so obviously English, so I looked for translations. Feid is the Old French version.

4. In developing their backstory, what elements of the world they live in played the most influential parts?

I think the gods and her relationship with them is what ended up shaping her character in the end, and mostly how the gift of eternal youth they gave her works.

5. Is there any significance behind their hair colour?

nope

7. Is there any significance behind their height?

no (honestly, she's quite banal: brown hair, brown eyes, average height)

8. What (if anything) do you relate to within their character/story?

Well, let’s be honest, she was originally a self insert. I’m not sure if I can still say it’s the case, because I have changed and so has she.

9. Are they based off of you, in some way?

See above.

10. Did you know what the OC’s sexuality would be at the time of their creation?

I didn’t really consider it. I’m still unsure. I’ve never really pictured her in a relationship.

11. What have you found to be most difficult about creating art for your OC (any form of art: Writing, drawing, edits, etc.)?

Writing her is difficult, mostly because of a change in plot I decided to implement when rewriting the book.

12. How far past the canon events that take place in their world have you extended their story, if at all?

Not much and a lot at the same time.. Saying more would be a spoiler..

13. If you had to narrow it down to 2 things that you MUST keep in mind while working with your OC, what would those things be?

Her faith (it's hard to portray a true believer when you're not really one yourself), and her magic (in the sense that I must be careful not to make her too powerful)

14. What is something about your OC that can make you laugh?

Her youth. Like she had a lot of vitality and willpower when she was younger. She could push through everything and have fun with her magic, making silly jokes.

15. What is something about your OC can make you cry?

Her loneliness. I’ve been there so I know the pain.

16. Is there some element you regret adding to your OC or their story?

Her ability to travel through time. This has created headaches as to why she does not use it more often.

17. What is the most recent thing you’ve discovered about your OC?

That she does not remember much from that one time she traveled in the future, except for her own tombstone.

18. What is your favourite fact about your OC?

She keeps trying. Even when she fails, even when she makes mistakes which can have great consequences, she gets up again and she tries to do better.
