The Cake and Spoon Bakery

Part 1

Hafsa smiled as she opened up the bakery. She'd had this job as a server for 3 months now and she loved it. It was only supposed to be a short term thing, so she could save some money for her mum, but she ended up staying much longer than anyone had expected.

It was a Saturday morning so it was her turn to open up the store. Her converse clad feet padded against the worn wooden floor as she mentally checked off all the things that she needed to do. Once she was finally done, she went outside, turning the sign on the front door. Open. Hafsa sat down behind the teal till and waited for the customers to file in. Hafsa loved the look of the Cake and Spoon bakery. It was perfect, from the smooth countertops, once white now off white with age, to the teal accents scattered around. It had a feel that meant that everyone who merely walked by felt at home, much like Hafsa did.

She leant on her hands, waiting for someone to walk in, for something to do. She blew her long black curly hair out of her face impatiently.She was often restless and found it hard to sit still after her mums..her mums.. what happened to her mum. On edge, she jumped up, anxious for a task to busy herself and fill her empty hands. Grabbing a few naked cakes from under the glass case and a piping bag crammed with a myriad of colourful frosting and began to ice the cakes. One,after another,after another; taking care not to ruin her favourite black  sweater. Hafsa was wearing something very normal but it definitely worked. A fitted black jumper. Crop tops and tank tops had no place in Manchester, where weather is not kind. Her dark washed jeans already coated in flour, she simply shrugged, unable to fix the problem now.She began to lose herself in the mundane yet repetitively fulfilling task until she heard the bell ring, meaning that there was finally a person, someone to interact with. Looking up, trying not to look too hopeful her eyes settled on her favourite customer, Anne. Anne was a beautiful woman,she had chestnut brown hair cut to her shoulder. She wore statement earrings and a beaded bracelet. Anne was anything but old fashioned.With bright eyes and a wide smile Anne greeted her with the same warmth she always did.

"Hafsa, lovey! You look beautiful. How are you?" Anne beamed.

Hafsa blushed."Great thanks Anne, and you?

"Doing even better now M'here" She said as she picked up one of the cake Hafsa was icing and inhaled deeply, a grin plastered on her face.

"Hows Gem? Haven't seen her in absolutely ages" Hafsa gushed.

Annes eyes gleamed,"She's great hun, always asking about you.. wondering when you would come over again"

Hafsa sighed "Soon, soon. I just don't get out much since.."

Anne replied before Hafsa could finish, sensing her discomfort "Yeah I know, but whenever you're ready, remember my doors always open. The whole family misses you."

"Believe me, I miss you guys too" Hafsa responded." So what are you looking for today, you're usual or are you wanting to try something new??"

"Umm" Anne said fingers tapping on the glass counter " Ill go with a latte, a croissant and.. can I make an order to pick up later today?" she asked.

"Of course yeah, just tell me what you want and Ill have it ready whenever.

"Hmm, what do I fancy? Can I get that whole tequila infused cake and can you add a message by any chance?" Anne inquired, pointing over at the 3 tiered hot pink cake in the corner of the glass.

It was supposed to be for a bachelorette party but it was never collected. The edible diamanté edges and finishing glistened in the morning sun. Hmm classy.

"Woah Anne, tequila? Its quarter past 9 in the morning" Hafsa laughed.

"Oi pack it in, don't judge me, its not for now anyways. So can you add a message?"

"Deffo, just write it down with what colour icing you want, any other things you want me to add and then Ill ring it up"

Hafsa hands Anne a post it and a pen and starts making Annes coffee as she hears the scratching of the pen in the background, standing out against the silence in the rest of the bakery. As Hafsa finishes up the order, Anne sliders the post it over the counter.

"Happy 20th Birthday Harry in light pink icing surrounded by different breeds of cats" Hafsa read aloud , confused but also intrigued. "Cats?" She questioned.

"Harry does love his pussies" Anne retorted, with a look on her face, a bit like she needed to poo.

After a few seconds of silence and awe from Hafsa, Anne burst out laughing, "Inside joke" she explained.

Hafsa nodded, still slightly confused but not willing to question much further. Anne handed her the money for the coffee, croissant and the cake.She turned away to put the notes in the till before looking back at Anne. "Harry?"

"My son" Anne replied, much to Hafsa's shock.

"Ive known you for ages and you never told me about your son??" Hafsa almost screeched, shocked about the information she was hearing.

"Yeah he's been away for a while doing his um.. thing, but he's back now for his birthday" Anne explained.

"Ahh okay, that must be nice" Hafsa said, feeling her cheeks warm.

"Yeh, very nice" Anne said, her bright grin returning back to her face. Hafsa was happy that Anne was so happy.

"Okay Ill get this done in the next few hours and you can pick it once I give you a call? Sound good?"

"Sounds great Hafsa, so nice seeing you again lovey" Anne replied, grabbing her latte in one hand and her croissant in the other.

"Bye"

"Bye love"

And with the final slam of the front door, the interaction ended. Hafsa returned solemnly to her half iced cupcakes, once again eager to fill her empty hand and once again, alone.
