We can't have a constructive discussion on the Kalevala and its relationship with cultural appropriation without first seeing it for what it truly is - a multicultural hybrid that pulls from many sources.

And claiming otherwise is proof of how little people know about this topic, the contents found within the book, the origin and history of the project, and the cultures and tradition the book borrows from.

There are misconceptions (and a bad game of telephone) at play when it comes to this topic: first one being that Kalevala "belongs" to finns, and the second one being that it "belongs" to karelians. Neither of these ideas are correct nor are they based in reality. This false narrative is solely driven by emotions rather than fact on both sides of this argument, and it leaves out everyone else whose tradition and beliefs are used in the mythos of this story book, including ingrians and ostrobothnians, such as myself. My home is the starting point of the entire project, including runes and concepts which were collected and documented before the birth of karelianism. Without ostrobothnia there would be no Kalevala. The start of the project is never discussed in a truthful manner and I just can't imagine why. I hope it stems from ignorance and lack of research, because honestly I've mostly seen people parrot the same exact unsourced claims without anyone fact-checking what they're actually saying. Finns have historically not been a monolith and to this day some still aren't, for example many ostrobothnians would proudly declare that they weren't finns up to the 1900s. It's also wrong to simply divide Finland into west and east, as this is a bit too simplistic and it creates a binary that doesn't exactly exists. The truth of the matter is that there isn't just one culture, ethnicity, country or peoples who can claim the Kalevala for itself. Nor many the "characters" included, such as Väinämöinen, who is a prominent figure in the runes and beliefs of multiple cultures, such as mine. He doesn't belong to anyone nor can anyone claim him, especially when you consider the fact that his role and nature differs depending on who you ask. Trying to hog a widespread concept to one peoples/culture is ignorant at best and erasure at worst. It's downright depressing to see the "Lönnrot came up with (ostrobothnian deity)" and "finns didn't think their own culture was exotic enough" lies spread around every website. Lönnrot was first familiarised with concepts and ideas Väinämöinen, Ilmarinen, Louhi, Pimentola/Pohjola (to name a few) from published ostrobothnian runes and lexicons, namely Mythologia Fennica. He was familiar with these concepts long before he ventured to Kainuu and Viena, he knew what he was looking for thanks to all the published works he was able to get his hands on. In fact the main reason he went eastward was because he thought he wouldn’t be able to find new material from the documented places in Ostrobothnia, and thus decided he might be able to find more material for his “longer narrative” elsewhere (1). After learning that merchants from Vuokkiniemi had recently visited Zacharias Topelius in Uusikaarlepyy/Nykarleby, he decided to head there next. Even Viena, where most runes were collected, has a unique culture due to being settled by karelians in the 1500s, and ostrobothnians in the 1600s (many of them rune singers). No doubt that pieces of the indigenous sámi (most of whom were pushed northward by the arrival of karelians) also persist in the culture of the region (possibly along with savonian and tavastian settler influence) (2). Just because these populations assimilated into karelians doesn't mean they shouldn't be mentioned when discussing the culture of Viena, and of course Kalevala. While I understand the frustration around this subject, and I do think much of it is justified, it's extremely disheartening to see just how easily attempts at conversation are shot down by both finns and karelians, and how quick people are to completely disregard and shun other cultures and peoples involved... and for what? I understand the anger, but it won't take us anywhere. It’s detrimental to push down others when attempting to uplift one’s own culture.

 I truly wish people did more research on this subject and started to actually respect and acknowledge the cultures involved - and I mean all of them. The ignorance and staggering lack of research concerning this topic is unbelieveable.. and of course extremely saddening.

I tend to be private/selective as i get fairly overwhelmed with too much activity. i really get into plots though, and i'll spam the dash with some silly original dick chauvinism from time to time when ive fed my inner gremlins past midnight. That said, I do get easily overwhelmed when I'm following too many people and multi muse blogs in particular can exacerbate this feeling, so if I do not follow back - I might just not be in a good place to atm or I just don't see possible interactions btw our characters. This is a mutuals only interaction blog for my sanity (anons being fine). if i can see plots happening between us, i'll likely follow. but i get overwhelmed easily so please don't take it personally if i don't follow back or follow back right away.

I am not exclusive, but I prioritize my plotted threads and may have some mains/activity based off that as far as my main verse goes. But I will never be fully exclusive and i enjoy exploring different character dynamics. Also multiship is fine, but I am not exclusively here to ship or write suggestive content. My muses have always and will always require plotting and scene chemistry for me to consider writing ship material. In the case I do reblog shippy prompts still feel free to send in ofc! I don't like the feeling of being 'collected' so...if you are interacting with multiple of my muses, I ask you have a different dynamic for mine than them. This is just an act of courtesy I also extend to my rp partners. I interact more with folks that have a special relationship with my muse, so it's needed to deep dive into more interesting topics for me. I know that Adam is a bad guy. He's insufferable and can push buttons- but I am not him and I dislike constantly feeling like I'm being barraged for his actions, especially since I consider him to be a heavily layered character that should not be shoe horned into a standard 'ok irredeemable and never allowed nice things' box. So- if you honestly hate this character please don't interact. I am here for exploring taboo topics and ways that a flawed character can make others think he's justified, betray them, make people feel COMPLICATED things... I also love torturing my muse and taking the piss out of him, so I don't need people moving in and tying to constantly put him down/ruin his current plots by being god modey or not at least asking me how we should proceed in a power dynamic, or relationships cuz you don't ship what I ship, or find my interactions with other characters 'toxic' and 'not allowed'...let me explore and enjoy what I like on my blog within reason and do talk with me on dms if you don't like how things are going with our muses and you wanna explore other routes. I am here to bring myself closer to the people in order to shape my revolution, and generally continue to heal from the trauma that is my life.

I'm willing to talk about/RP pretty much anything: konoha, its citizens, the ninja world, the non-ninja world, my family, history, furries, whatever. Keeping in mind I'm not trying to be overly serious, and almost all of my posts will be for the sake of humour (that doesn't mean there won't be kernels of truth in what I say). You can ask me about my opinion on these things through my ask or on posts. If you want to say something privately to me you can message me, but don't lead in with something like "hi" only and wait for me to respond (I'll ignore it because I'll assume you're a BBW MILF in my area or something).

I'm not going to talk about anything inflammatory or requires serious thought on greater world topics as I feel that's inappropriate (eg. I won't talk about ongoing wars in specifics). If I see you reblogging my posts in what I feel is an overly antagonistic way, towards myself or others (the most common form of this is I write a post saying I don't like someone, and someone reblogs with "YEAH fuck [female character] she's a [vulgar misogynistic slur] #[female character's name]"), I'll block you. This is meant to be a restorative account to make me and others feel good.

In terms of roleplaying:

I'm okay with interacting with anyone, but if I don't know who you are please forgive me and I'll ask you to introduce yourself

I'm always "in character" even in DMs, it's just easier that way for me

I use emojis and gifs to communicate actions and expressions sometimes, it's just more comfortable for me that way as it's easier for me to communicate visually

If you're someone who should be dead/disappeared/whatever in canon, the feelings I would have towards you will remain as they should. If you want to discuss a storyline on this, let me know.

I talk about sasunaru primarily since this is a canon-ish blog, but I'm open to alternate stories so long as they develop naturally.

A reminder that everything I post is from my perspective and based on my opinion. FYI I see the Naruto manga as a biographical re-telling of certain events (everything until chapter 699), and the anime as an interpretation of the biography (therefore some filler will be true to me). Therefore, any time I present thoughts on these things, they may not always be 100% in line with what's shown-- basically this blog is semi-canon divergent.

2024 Fic Swap Event Information

On September 12, assignments will be given for the secret gift swap and the public portion of the event will go live in the form of a google sheet.

Event will end November 25.

The deadline to drop out is November 15. Life is unpredictable and I'm very understanding if you need an extension or need to drop out. This is a flexible event not meant to be stressful. I only ask that you please communicate with me so I can arrange an alternate writer or plan extended time.

I'm aware it can feel daunting to write about others' OCs, and it's entirely optional! Ideas for types of fics to write include: NPC character studies, second person/game style, explorations of locations, etc.

Most of all: be creative, have fun, and enjoy practicing the craft of writing! Don't be nervous. Your writing is good enough to participate.

How it works:

There will be both a secret gift swap and a public portion of the event. For the secret swap, everyone will be randomly assigned another participant to write for (matches based on game experience level), to ensure everyone receives at least one fic.

The public event will operate similarly to "artfight," in which you'll be able to view people's wishes for fic and write something for any participant(s).

After the participant list is posted, please DM me if there's anyone you don't want to be partnered with for any reason. No questions asked. This information will never be shared. During the event, if you receive a gift that doesn't align with your interests or includes content you explicitly said you didn't want, don't be scared to let me know. We'll work it out.

The event moderator reserves the right to remove a participant who fails to follow event guidelines.

Rules:

This event is limited in scope to Fallen London and not the tie-in games. I'm aware some overlap exists with the tie-in games which is okay to reference, but fics should be focused on Fallen London.

👋Hello this is my tumblr, as you can see. I figured since I'm interacting with the website outside of quietly liking posts, I should talk a bit about myself for the people checking out my work.

Proper introduction

hello and welcome !! my name is Ohshy, but you may call me Ilias or Percy. Any pronouns, 20 something years old. this is my art blog slash internet scrapbook. I like a lot of different things, including art, drawing, character design, movies, cartoons, video games, furry stuff, and generally weird things that make me feel deeply.

My biggest special interest is the ocean and it's critters, hence my username (haha geddit). You'll often see me reblogging stuff related to it.

Guys hate to be a killjoy but please remember: fic-writing is hard when the topic isn't something you're interested in!

You can send me this post in my dms, inbox, put it on my dash or whatever but please know I'm not going to write a fic. I'll write you a drabble, or even a ficlet if I get really inspired, but I by no means have the bandwidth to write full-on fics!

I'm not mad about this, of course - I really want to make that clear. I don't Some writers might like this sort of thing; feel free to share your opinions on this matter whether or not you agree! General Roleplay Information

- I write rather detailed responses and often do my best to at least match the replies of the person I'm roleplaying with. I have 7+ years of experience as well.

- I will ONLY roleplay with adults/18+ individuals, I often include mature topics in my character's lore and like exploring dark themes, thus I would like to stick to people in my age range.

- Aside from the age rule I don't have anything else to mention for boundaries. I am a very flexible person with roleplays and am open to most ideas over all.

- An additional warning: While I have not mentioned it directly in his character information, as to keep some mystery, the OC featured below does have a past history with abuse of several kinds so please keep that in mind as there is a chance it will be brought up depending on how things go.

- In the case of this being mainly for a HTTYD setting I am mainly looking for rps that would involve other human ocs, though I will also consider lycanwings. Canon characters are also on the table I guess? In short though the only thing I'm not looking for is one sided human and dragon roleplays with this character.

- Plot and roleplay themes/setting are up for discussion so we can make sure everything fits for both characters involved. I am also very open for potential shipping plots! Slow burn or other wise.

✦ Name: Rem is the only name he ever gives.

✦ Gender: Male

✦ Age: Roughly 37-38 (Though I am open to doing things with his past, so he'd be somewhere in his 20s depending on when it is.)

✦ Sexuality (opt.): He likes men :)

✦ Occupation (opt.): Rogue Dragon Rider - Freelance Criminal (for himself)

✦ Personality: An oddly often cheerful and upbeat person, Rem notably lives in the moment so to speak with little focus on the future, no matter how quickly said future and consequences come for him he really does his best to ignore it. He in general lives fast and does his best to just roll with life's punches. With people, or well, men he tends to have a habit of being mildly flirtatious - often in the way of making snide and usually vulgar comments/jokes. While he is not as inclined towards it as he once was, he still has a notable liking for hooking up with people now and again when he can.

He holds little attachment to objects and is very quick to move on and replace things- he has a similar outlook with people unfortunately, while he has friends he doesn't really let himself get overly attached to any one individual, so if they grow to hate him or leave or… worse he isn't all that bothered. His relationships with others are loose friendships at the best as he tends to be cagey about his past and will do almost anything to avoid the topic if he can help it. The only thing he is distinctly attached to is his dragon, though he isn't exactly worried about loosing them.

While he often can seem snarky and selfish, especially with prioritizing himself above all else, he does have a good heart. Though some emotional and mental scars keep him from meaningful connections, it's simply not worth the risk to him even if he yearns for something stable.

✦ Appearance: Standing between 6 '1 and 6' 2 Rem is of decent height and is rather broadly built - while he is agile and quick on his feet his broad shouldered body type suggests otherwise. He keeps himself covered almost entirely by clothing, though his face is partly visible, the lower half being covered by a mask. Bright green eyes are often visible in the shadow of his cloak hood along with the glimpse of pale freckled skin and at least one notable scar that creates an uneven diagonal line across his face. His hair is dirty blonde yet often seems more brown with streaks of white and it's rather fluffy/curly in texture. His outfit is a combination of leathers and cloth studded with dragon scales (namely from grim gnashers), with some metal adornments here and there that are an odd purple-black color. A green cloak rests atop it all with striped patterns on the interior that mimic his dragon's wing stripes.

✦ Backstory: The vast majority of Rem’s personal history is something he keeps very close to his chest, though what is known about him is his lifestyle of being a rogue dragon rider - for years now Rem has gotten by in life by snatching and stealing from just about anyone, and much like his dragon he's often a bit too slippery to be caught for long. This does mean his masked visage and rather notable dragon are known throughout islands and villages, there's a price on his head in half the Archipelago and beyond but they haven't caught him yet and they won't as long as he has anything to say about it.

-His main dragon is a slitherwing with polycephaly, a great green banded serpent who's notably defensive over him, with good reason.

-He sometimes has a secondary dragon in the form of a freshly hatched leucistic slitherwing, who's lovingly named Spirit.

✦ Casual Other Little Facts:

"What" makes up like half of his vocabulary and he often tends to be very expressive with his hands when he speaks.

While he is not very open emotionally, Rem can often be very physically open or touchy with people though it is explicitly on his terms. He tends to get very flinch-y if touched unprompted by others.

While he is very good with his dragons he is very iffy with almost any other species. He is knowledgeable of slitherwings almost exclusively with some exceptions.

While he may be clever and very good at thinking on his feet he can also be a bit dense sometimes, especially when handling people and their emotions under normal social circumstances. He's got street smarts, not book smarts.

Weapon wise he often utilizes a bull-hook of all things.

When he has Spirit, that little dragon means the WORLD to him. He's like cat dad vibes but with a little highly venomous dragon.
