I finally watched VHS Christmas Carol Live last night, and I loved it! I wanted to give some initial thoughts:

The music SLAPS! Like, so good! I'm not usually much of an 80's pop person, but honestly it was bop after bop the whole time. Bah Humbug, That Scrooge, Christmas Electricity, and Priceless were all highlights for me. I think what sold it for me was how lyrically tight it was, and how strong the emotions were. Telling a story entirely through song is no easy feat, but they absolutely nailed the structure and pacing.

Speaking of the emotions, Christmas Carol has been adapted so many times, that it's really important to hit all the emotional beats to sell the spirit of the story, and VHS delivers. I feel like many adaptations go all in on the misery, regret, and sorrow of the story, and only really bring the cheer and warmth in at the very end. VHS really embraces not only the somber parts of the tale, but the joyful parts too. Fezziwig's Chistmas party, Fred's party, and the Crachit's family dinner all really portray the joyfullness of the season and how that joyfullness can come from many places. It really strengthens the message of the story in a way that adaptations focused only on the bleak aspects miss.

In terms of actual story decisions, VHS really sticks to the classic story very closely and does it really well. Actual story changes are few and far between, but the ones they included I really liked. I loved the addition of the couple who are thankful that Scrooge died because it relieves their debt. It really highlights that Crachit and his family are not the only people affected by Scrooge's greed. Many adaptations either like to forget he's a landlord, or don't unpack the ethics of landlords, so it was nice to see some sort of acknowledgment of Scrooge's less direct and more systemic impact. I also really liked how Scrooge delivered the turkey to the Crachit's in secret, and didn't give Bob his raise until after Christmas instead of barging in unannounced. I had never really thought about it before, but in most versions he does just kind of barge in on their celebration and make a big production of giving Bob a raise. I like how he let them have their celebration in peace and spent more time with Fred.

The performances were all killer. I know it kinda goes without saying at this point, but everyone in the cast in Starkid shows are always so talented. Special mention to James Tolbert, because I feel like he doesn't get enough recognition for what a talented actor, dancer, and choreographer (and director) he is. This was also my first time seeing Janaya Mahealani Jones in anything, and her Belle really blew me away. Other stand-outs for me were Dylan Saunders' Scrooge, Lauren Lopez and Joey Ritcher's Crachits, and Jaime Lyn Beatty's Ghost of Christmas Past, but really everyone knocked it out of the park.

June Saito's costumes! The 80s themeing was outstandingly executed, and the quick changes were really impressive. I've gotten used to the more realistic and toned down costumes that fit the Hatchetfield shows' setting (which are also fantastic, not trying to minimize those), but between this and the LiB's in NPMD, it's wonderful to see June Saito get to really go over the top. Special mention to Marley's costume (silver chain pants? silver chain pants!), the 3 spirit's silver and blue color themeing, and that sequined suit jacket Scrooge wears at the end of the show.

Overall, really good. Might pay for the VHS Carols digital ticket later today and watch it.

Pokemon Horizons Episode 29 Review - Orla Focus

I always welcome an episode that has backstory. It’s super wonderful to learn more about the Rising Volt Tacklers. This time, it’s Orla’s turn in the spotlight. She’s the mechanic of the team, and also the most needed person on the ship. She’s a very talented engineer and knows how to fix practically everything. So, what happens when she meets a fellow female engineer who needs her help? That’s what this episode is.

Excluding Liko and Roy, Orla is the fourth person of the Rising Volt Tacklers to have her backstory revealed; we just need Dot and Ludlow’s stories now. We had a glimpse of Orla’s past through her connection with Friede, who also happens to be her childhood friend. Orla is Kantonian, but moved to Hoenn in her childhood. While she got a job at a shipyard and enjoyed her work, she wasn’t sure if this was what she really wanted to do in life. The fire in her heart started igniting once Friede asked to build an airship from Ludlow’s fishing boat, as shown in Episode 18. In this episode, Orla’s feelings about that offer is shown as she said that it helped her realize that this was what she wanted to do. It’s always nice to read stories about people trying to find their true purpose in life; this is essentially Orla’s story.

Orla really likes machinery of any kind and knows how each parts work. When stumbling upon Karna’s Pokeball factory, she essentially acts as her mentor to teach her how each part of her factory works. I do like that she instantly knows what these parts are and how to utilize them; she even got Karna’s partner Magby helping out. Just seeing two female engineers bonding over machinery is a nice feeling; I really liked seeing this friendship budding.

Karna is a really cute character. She essentially a Pokeball otaku but some of her creations are absolutely useless; who the heck needs Bomb Balls if they’re just going to explode on you? I like the fact that even though there is a Pokeball factory in Kalos, that doesn’t stop her from having her own factory in Galar with her own creations. The fact that she designs everything on her own is an amazing feat in itself. As a creative myself, I understand that passion. Despite her geekiness when it comes to Pokeballs, she has no idea what the Ancient Pokeball is; she’s just fascinated with its design. I think that’s a good factor because it does factor in how mysterious these balls are. In addition to her cute appearance, Karna is voiced by Saki Fujita. Fujita is known for being the voice provider for the iconic vocaloid Hatsune Miku. She’s also a rather known name in the Pokemon anime as she voiced several characters in past series like Anthea from the Black and White anime, Lyn (the girl who swapped her back with Bonnie on accident) from XY, and Pikarla from Sun & Moon. Having her guest again for another character makes me wonder why they haven’t casted her for a major role yet; she’s super talented.

In terms of our main duo, Liko and Roy had their fair share of spotlight. Liko was worried about whether Orla would be leaving the group, but I did feel as if it was unnecessary. I know that she’s still a kid, but she should know that Orla is a necessary presence in the airship. Liko was the one who had asked about Orla’s past while Roy was testing out the prototype balls before starting the conflict of the second half of the episode. I did like that Liko figured out Galarian Weezing’s type before scanning it on her Pokedex and learned its actual typing. She’s a lot smarter here than she was in the previous episode; I’m amazed.

I could complain about Friede and Captain Pikachu saving the day again, but I decided to give up. It’s essentially a recurring element at this point and there’s nothing I can do about it. Whatever the episode, Friede will always swoop in and save the day. He’ll always be the hand-holding gameplay for Liko and Roy. At least he did something cool and showed off his knowledge of Galarian Weezing and their love for smoke.

My only gripe for this episode was Liko and Roy not asking Karna about her knowledge about the Hisui region as she knew about the balls from back then. It was pure missed opportunity; they could’ve had some clues about Kleavor, regardless of how small it could have been! Other than that, this episode was enjoyable. Karna was a nice character of the day and it was nice seeing her similarities with Orla in terms of love for engineering and machines. What are your thoughts about this episode?

Teuta will smile in the end, putting her hand on hip as a show of unshaking will that she's sure of it.

“I would let you out to your right habitat since I love you, so don't worry about it!” she nods for a good measure.

Ah... Good old simpleminded thinking can lead you to satisfying conclusion sometimes, you feel kind of confused on how to react since she's that genuine...

The type of guy who says he still loves you no matter what's your appearance, added with a concerned smile of his.

He would kind of worry but more to curious about the reason you're asking. Like, “Why do you ask?”

Just making sure, you know? Maybe something bothers you so that's why you would ask that kind of question in the first place.

After he's convinced wholly this is just another one of your whims, he turns the question right back at you, already grinning confidently. “Now that you got your answer now, how about me if I were in that position?”

You wouldn't refuse a worm like him when you're already his partner and all, right? It's only fair, as a part of give and take from both sides' reciprocating feelings.

Doesn't elaborate, doesn't humor you, doesn't even try to keep up the topic. Shu only stares at you with unreadable expression although his brows seem creased slightly.

If he could be honest right now, the mere thought of you being a worm is just... He hates the feeling of imagining it. If you were only a worm, you wouldn't be the you right now standing in front of him; the same person; or the person he loves even for that matter. It would be pointless, he wouldn't even reach life this far without you.

He realizes trying to explain it to you would be a drag, so he doesn't give you a much of an opinion. He ends up taking you out for a drive and maybe a walk together. “The fresh air might be what you really need to clear your mind off the clutter junk in there.”

The kind of reactions he shows are varying, it feels like you're watching through someone's five stages of acceptance which for Crow is registering your question. “Eh!? Ah! Um, wait, of course...?”

He's considering to call for Anima's aid for this perfect moment, he doesn't though since he decides it would be inappropriate of him as your boyfriend...

Crow eventually—after having to take a deep breath—answers you, “I would.. take care of you and make you a good home in my room with the proper environment and food but yeah because I love you and I think that's what I think is best if you about to become—I mean, if you were a.. worm...”

Poor guy feels like he has run a lap or something as he soon tries to catch his breath.

He will be all the more clingy and whiny the rest of the day like a koala to a tree since he worries if you would turn yourself into a worm any moment.

7. Daredevil – Lyn

From the Persona 5 Strikers soundtrack! This is the theme that plays when you're on the way to fight a boss and it is appropriately hype. Also the lyrics go so hard especially in the second verse/chorus.

11. Life Will Change – Lyn

I knew it. I somehow knew this would happen. Congrats, this is the equivalent to Daredevil from the original Persona 5. It's definitely my favorite from the P5 soundtrack!

47. Master of Tartarus – Atlus Sound Team

This one's from the Persona 3 soundtrack.....I swear to god. Did you do this on purpose? I mean I do have a lot of Persona songs in my Wrapped this time around but you still managed to skip a whole chunk of not-Persona and land on Persona again. Anyway this plays during miniboss fights and it's very groovy. The P3Re version is also very good but we don't have it in an official capacity yet so!

52. Hate Girl – かいりきベア (Kairiki Bear)

We're free! (Although, admittedly, it was a narrow miss.) This is my favorite Kairiki Bear song!!! It was also his newest song when I started following him....how has it been six years already? Anyway, Kairiki Bear also happens to be my favorite vocaloid producer, so even if you don't like this I recommend trying out one of his more popular songs!

94. 炎のチルノ – CrazyBeats featuring NAGISA

This one is a Touhou doujin arrangement! Not only that, it happens to be a EUROBEAT arrangement! Eurobeat is one of my favorite genres, and Touhou eurobeat especially. CrazyBeats is a lesser-known circle, especially compared to powerhouses like A-One, but it's gained popularity over the last few years. This one's by far my favorite of theirs, which is kind of funny, since it's also the only one I regularly listen to that's an arrangement of a song I have never heard before!
