I'm so tired but at the same time I just wanted to write that... TK8 may truly be one of the worst stories in all the games lol. Not as bad as TK6 (solely because I'm biased and TK6 ruined my favorite character) but like... with each game, it feels like they're just making more and more of a mess with the lore, and TK8 just felt like they stopped caring completely about consistency. And really? It is actually getting harder to care about the story because of that.

But why exactly? You see, it's just hard to care about anything at all. It's hard to even know what's going to happen next, and not in a good way either. Not, "they're so clever, they're good at surprising and subverting expectations!" But in a "they will literally just do anything even if it contradicts previously established lore." Like there are zero stakes. If a character dies, it means nothing. That character is very likely alive, and we'll even probably see them soon.

It's hard to even really like characters when they can be completely altered on a whim.

Like Claudio, who was clearly being set up to be a bad guy in next game.

Only for... that to not happen lmao. In fact, he's very good now. Which also just takes away stakes of Xiaoyu being placed in a situation where she could be harmed, and Kin having another adversary that isn't just Kaz. which yes, a lot of ppl prefer Claudio being a good guy after all. But again, it's a thing they completely disregarded.

Devil Jin is another example of a character just being completely changed for no good reason. How he went from a murderous, cannibalistic, highly violent and sadistic person, to... being a force of good, someone that was always trying to protect Jin but Jin was just denying it? Like yes, those two examples I show from Tekken 6 are technically "non canon", but it's clearly what Devil's character was supposed to be. He wasn't supposed to like Jin, he was ashamed of Jin, he saw Jin as a weakling. He was never meant to be his protector - he wanted Jin out of the picture so he can be free to do whatever he wants, which usually involves killing, maiming, and gaining power.

But see? A character can go from a parasitic force that corrupts the host, to being a guardian devil just because the writers decided they wanted to do that. Disregard to previous canon. The same thing happened to Jin in Tekken 6. Jin was a complete good guy, but then he was suddenly turned into a ruthless, heartless, warmonger all because Harada thought it was "cool", again - disregard to what Jin was, what his story meant, everything his character was.

Or how Zafina had Azazel in her arm, could've potentially became a more important character because of this new power she possessed. Only... for Kazuya to take it away from her at practically the start of the game. A story for her character that went nowhere.

Because of that, it's just so hard to even become attached to a character because you just don't know when they're going to be completely changed into something they weren't... or when their stories will be dropped and they'll go nowhere. (Paul from being a comedic relief who had amazing feats of strength, to just becoming a complete joke with no wins and that nobody takes seriously. Or Asuka, obviously meant to be Jin's cousin and even hinted at possessing Jun's powers of purification. Only... for her to become Lili's sidekick and completely irrelevant to the story. Even Lili gets more respect than she does in TK8)

Then of course, with characters not being able to stay dead... not even for a single game. It's becomes more difficult to care when a character "dies" or is "about to die" when you know nothing is gonna happen. The character will come back, regardless of how they died, just because the writers want to use them again. Even if it means ruining the weight of the other games, or the developments characters had.

There's also the problem with the game itself becoming too saturated with jokes. I've spoke about this somewhat recently, but before, a lot of the characters were allowed serious endings or side stories. (Like check out Tekken 4's endings, I think almost every character had a serious ending with real character development in that one). But now the majority of the character endings are just either fluff or wacky shenanigans. Which again, makes you feel less invested in the characters when nothing serious is actually going on, and also makes it feel like the writers just... don't care as much anymore.

And I get that Tekken is a fighting game, but like... it still has a story it "proudly" presents. Therefore, it's still something people are liable to get invested in, and become disappointed when all canon is thrown out the window. It just makes you wonder what's the point of caring about what happens if it's gonna be undone in the next game. It makes you wonder why care about a character when their story, or even the character themselves, can be changed completely next game?

Of course, I love Tekken, and I am interested in seeing how crazy it can get. But I will say, I am becoming less invested with each game lol! TK4 had amazing writing and aesthetics, and I really wish the game could've kept following in TK4's footsteps rather than going completely off the rails like this. Really, TK's writing peaked at TK2-TK4, then it started going downhill from TK5.

why Chronus deserves to be in -STRIVE-

-STORY/FEATS-

Chronus is supremely important to Xrd’s story and is a major player in the world of GG. 

He was the leader of the United Nations Conclave, an organization (if an organization can consist of just four people lol) that essentially dictated the entire world, he was one of the five original apostles of The Original alongside Asuka, Baldias, Axus and Libraria, he caused the entirety of Xrd -SIGN-’s story to happen, and he was a major behind-the-scenes player in Revelator when he freed That Man. 

He’s an extremely proficient magic user, capable of freely moving extremely large objects in and out of the Backyard, staying in the Backyard for long periods of time and activating/deactivating Absolute Defense: Felion in a matter of seconds. It’s honestly a little strange to me that people say Ariels should’ve been playable since she was “the main villain” when Chronus was ripe for the picking lol. 

-CONNECTIONS-

Chronus has some kind of relationship with almost every character in -STRIVE- (mostly negative ones lol), opening the door for many, many unique interactions with different cast members. Personally, the ones I’m most interested in are Zato-ONE, Faust and Asuka but there’s so much more: Ramlethal, Slayer, Venom, Milia, Chaos, Ky, etc, etc.

I’d love to see Zato’s relationship with the Conclave explored in more detail, how does he really feel about being resurrected? Would he thank Chronus, or despise him for bringing him into this world without emotions?

Chronus has a very interesting relationship with Asuka. It’s clear that they knew each other from being students of The Original and Chronus bringing up Asuka’s “Master Thesis” when they met in Revelator but I really want to see it explored more! How different are their respective relationships with The Original? Do they even like each other? Is Chronus using the same methods as Asuka to stay alive? Why did all of The Aposltes decide to hide their identities?

As for Faust, I feel like he’d have the only positive relationship with Chronus. Unless Faust’s “square one” transformation made him go back to hating Chronus, I think they’d just have a nice chat. 

Furthermore, (according to this translation of him at the France Japan Expo), when asked for funny stories about Faust, Daisuke answered:  “Just Faust himself is funny, right? But well, this is a story we haven't depicted yet, but after the story of Strive, Faust and a character called Chronus end up continuing to travel together for a long time…Going with that- Chronus is a character with a very rigid personality, but through living with Faust, I imagine he would gradually become softer over time in a slice of life comedy-like scenario.”

-DESIGN-

Chronus, along with the rest of the Conclave are clearly based on the mysterious Q from Street Fighter III. This by itself is, to me at least, already a good enough design to get into -STRIVE- with some minor adjustments. However, at the end of -SIGN- Chronus’ design gets even cooler! Now sporting a cracked mask, a ripped up hat and blood running down his face.

Plus, it’s not like they’re completely locked in with this design, they can always change his outfit or mask to make him look even cooler than he already does! Hell, they could even bring back the old mask from Vastedge with a few changes and it’d look great!

In conclusion, I wholeheartedly believe that Chronus deserves a spot on the -STRIVE- roster before Arcsys stops adding characters. He’s a wonderful character with a ton of potential and I’m sure he’d draw in both new and old fans no matter what they do with him! Thank you.

Parade - FictionJunction Album Random Thoughts

Just got to listen to the full album so I thought I would share my initial reaction to the songs. I am not too invested in most of the collabs but I still wanted to check out all of them at least once.

【Tracklist】 01. Prologue: Smitten. Very beautiful. It’s nice how some of the main melodies of the album come together here to create the most perfect prologue. 02. ことのほかやわらかい (Koto no Hoka Yawarakai): I certainly expected something else based on the title. The beginning got me super excited because I typically love this type of song from YK but then the whole thing just lost its structure for me. Can’t really get into it 03. 夜光塗料 feat. ASCA (Yakō toryō): Nothing to write home about 04. Beginning: I really loved the live version so I had high hopes for this. How does Keiko manage to sound even more cutesy here? It fits the song though so I am fine with it. Yuriko’s lalala part is somehow not as chill-inducing as it was for the live performance but when everyone joins in, the harmonies are gorgeous, it sounds really well put together and beautiful. 05. もう君のことを見たくない feat. rito (Mō Kimi no Koto wo Mitakunai): Still very fond of this. While I am not 100% sold on rito���s vocals, I do really appreciate the sorrow she is able to convey with her singing. 06. 櫂 feat. Aimer (Kai): Wow, this is literally an exact replica of “Mizu no Akashi”. Or I guess it would be more accurate to say that “Mizu no Akashi” was ripped off from "Kai” because apparently that song was written almost 30 years ago. It’s a nice ballad obviously but Wakana’s version of “Mizu no Akashi” is so much more beautiful in my opinion. 07. 蒼穹のファンファーレ feat. 藍井エイル&ASCA&ReoNa (Sōkyū no fanfāre): Decent song but none of the included vocalists do anything for me. 08. 八月のオルガン feat. LINO LEIA (Hachigatsu no Organ): My opinion didn’t really change on this. Quite a solid song. Absolutely adore the chorus. The dynamics in this are very old-school. I know that Keiko mentioned in one of her FC magazines that the structure and harmony distribution reminded her a lot of Kalafina and yeah, that’s something I definitely agree with. Although I still don’t think LINO LEIA sounds like Wakana (which many fans seem to believe). 09. それは小さな光のような feat. KEIKO (Sore ha Chīsana Hikari no you na): I know I wasn’t impressed with the live version so I was hoping for a different reaction when listening to the studio track. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be. I am so sorry Keiko!!! I realise that this is some great work from Keiko but the melody of the song just falls flat for me. 10. from the edge feat. LiSA: Nope, not my cup of tea. Next 11. moonlight melody: Always a tremendous joy to listen to this but I feel like the live versions are so much more precious. 12. 世界の果て feat. 結城アイラ (Sekai no hate): Meh. Normally I’d be all over the gorgeous piano and strings but the song as a whole is just not particularly memorable. And I will never like Asuka’s voice. 13. Parade: As I’ve mentioned before, I am not the biggest fan of Joelle as main vocalist but that hasn’t stopped me from falling in love with the song. It’s just so lovely. Some people have compared it to “Homura” and yeah, I guess both songs feel similar to me, especially in terms of really enjoying the song itself despite not liking the vocalist. I have no idea if I am still too biased towards Wakana but I don’t even think that’s the issue here since I have no reference of Wakana previously singing. But I guess subconsciously I still kinda miss her in songs like this.

M 01,02,04,11,13 feat. KAORI/KEIKO/YURIKO KAIDA/Joelle

So yeah, “Parade” might actually be my favourite song on the album, what a surprise XD And “Prologue” is just such a great intro. Maybe I will appreciate “ことのほかやわらかい” more once I get to hear it live. It certainly has potential to become something I like. I do think that the collabs with rito and LINO LEIA are much better than any other tracks on this album which feature guest artists. Maybe it’s because YK put more effort into writing the songs specifically for them after the audition? I hope “それは小さな光のような“ will eventually grow on me because I really wanna like this song for Keiko’s sake...We’ll see.

Oh now this. This is happening! But let's dive into this ask you sent. So I am always down for Shaheen befriending and making friends from across the globe. It's kinda of a pleasant surprise for him when Asuka didn't mind extending that hand of friendhsip. Alongside his own amusement of Asuka being thrilled seeing him in action as an bodyguard doing his feats lol. Usually, its uncommon that Shaheen has continued contact with the people that he works with or those in proximity of the client he works alongside. He doesn't expect that level of openness when its a a purely professional matter. So he does take not to treasure those that are appreciative of Shaheen's prescene and company if Asuka is willing to place that amount of weight for their found dynamics. Plus Shaheen's general demeanor being a nice contrast to Asuka's more explosive and colorful dynamic is always a real "This good chief!" moment. One minute needing to keep his companion from going overboard. Or in other cases, being stern and defending her if he feels that Asuka's in reasonable danger or harassment that needs to be dealt with.

There is much that can be done with these two that could help them grow and if Asuka's willing to keep seeking him out as a friend from outside her home of Japan. Shaheen is not gonna stop her from doing so.

WHO IS HAYAKAWA KEN?

Hayakawa Ken is Japan’s #1 at quite a lot of zany feats, ranging from guitar-string archery to sniping his enemies’ bullets in half. He is also the star of hit superhero drama Kaiketsu Zubat! His goal is to avenge his fallen comrade, Asuka Goro, by slaughtering his way through the evil organization, Dakkar.

WHO ARE YOU?

Probably no more or less insane than all of you.

HOW WILL THIS TOURNAMENT BE RUN?

The way this tournament will happen is going to be a series of Events, like the real Olympics, except instead of normal things like bowling and tennis, each task will be something Hayakawa Ken has insisted he is Japan’s #1 at. As long as it’s an activity Hayakawa Ken challenges Dakkar agents to a duel of fates over, it will become an Event on this blog. So, episode 1′s “Sniping the enemy’s bullets out of the air so that neither of them hit the target” will be the first Event.

Propaganda should be about this character’s tactics/abilities/methods to complete the task, and whether they have done anything comparable in the canon. Ideally people will stop to think about the propaganda before voting, but I understand blood will run hot when voting for big faves. I want real “Goku vs Superman”-style debates here :3 It’s not my main blog, so IDGAF about the notes.

Banned stuff: HP, real people. I reserve the right to ban characters if I think their source media is too popular. I may make exceptions, but that is most of the banlist.

Hayakawa Ken will be banned from all Main Events, for the obvious reason that this tournament is named after him. We already know he can do all this shit. But can anybody else follow in his footsteps and become Tumblr’s #2? I’m thinking of having 1 winner per Event. So please don’t get too mad if your blorbo loses, because they might be better suited to win a different event later.

Hwoarang probably belongs in the strong section — given he has canonically defeated Jin and Devil Jin. Therefore, he seems a similar power level as Paul. Buuut... tbf, when he beat Devil, it was likely during a time when Devil and Jin were in a weakened state. Given it was just after the fight with Azazel, both of them seem to be struggling to move during that time, and they both fell into a coma shortly after. Plus Hwoarang also lost to Devil Jin in both TK5 and teeeechnically TK8 (the tournament)

So... interesting! I wonder if Hwoarang is capable of beating a Devil Jin that is not weakened? Thooough... I also dunno if Asuka belongs in "human (strong)" lbr. Yes, she possesses power, but she doesn't know nor has ever canonically used them. Also like, she's never canonically had any impressive feats. Xiaoyu has defeated a gang of Jacks robots, mostly on her own, both Xiao and Hwoa has given Jin a hard time in sparring or fighting matches. But Asuka...? She uhh... canonically defeated Jack-8? Also don't see how Law belongs in the "human (strong)" category either. Like Asuka, he just doesn't have any feats that prove this. He's Paul's sparring buddy, but I don't recall him defeating Ogre or getting into a draw with Kazuya lol.

AND LIKE, TECHNICALLY SPEAKING CANONICALLY - human (strong) is probs more impressive than being a bear in the eyes of the Tekken world. Like maybe irl it's about impossible to fight a bear on your own, but Tek doesn't work that way lol

let me break down my thoughts on ravsuka. I have soju in my body rn btw.

theyre like the only ship with anything resembling canon precedent that like REALLY compels me. Millia/Baiken is one that compels me too but that one's a bit less based in canon. and then every other ship I like is either bc its goofy or cutesy or silly or something.

raven/asuka in particular actually makes me go "oh fuck yes." and my half-lucid ass is gonna try to explain why ok

in one corner, you have a man whos around a thousand years old who cannot die under any circumstances. is impossible to kill. and has spent that entire, millenium-long existence losing his ability to feel anything to a point where he now is only capable of feeling pain, and to a point of deriving extreme pleasure from it. someone who according to his in game bio, wants to find proof he was alive, and dislikes himself for being unable to love - probably because his heart is just too jaded and distant to actually FEEL those feelings. despite that he's super loyal to asuka. asuka gives him a purpose.

in the other corner you have the sad moon man who did [insert long list of crimes] and is so crushed by the weight of his own guilt that he left to go to the moon alone, made a clone of himself that did not have a sense of morality SPECIFICALLY so the clone wouldnt feel that same crushing guilt, that he intended to replace himself with. he fucked up horrendously and he knows that. he's also been alive for 200+ years on top of all that.

asuka gives raven a purpose, and raven stuck with asuka despite everything.

asuka will forever be remembered by history as That Man, forever stained by the atrocities he's committed. raven was treated by the people he helped early on as just a machine or a service instead of a person, because of his feats of immortality. nowhere near the same severity, but they both have this experience with not being seen as an individual but rather a Thing or a Presence or a Title. I think. I might be cooking or maybe the soju is turning my brain to mush. but anyway despite that fact they both see and treat each other as individuals. they're people to each other despite the unique kind of loneliness they each know.

it definitely goes deeper than this but I'm not sure how eloquently I can break down that minutia rn lol. basically they're both real fucked up and can match each other's freak i think.

now what makes them in particular compelling to me is this: asuka says in his arcade mode (paraphrasing, it's 1am and I'm too lazy to direct quote) "I can't understand how other people feel, and I'm frustrated that I can't." he struggles with that, while raven just doesn't feel "love". despite that their connection is pretty fucking strong. i mean asuka trusts raven with overseeing his rejuvenation process when he has to like, backup his memories when he de-ages his body to keep himself alive for as long as he does. thats trust dude.

what I'm saying is I don't think it'd be lovey dovey at all and I don't even know that "romantic" is the word I'd use to describe the way I see the ship. it's too nuanced and complicated to put any label on. it has a unique shape and color all of its own and I think that's beautiful. I think they care about each other in a way nobody else could.

now that I've articulated this I'm realizing that the reason I fuck with them is because I also struggle with empathizing with people and wish I could find someone to match my freak that way. that makes sense actually.

should they kiss? idk. should they fuck? probably. should they heartachingly stare at one another from across the room as they each understand that the other is the only person on the earth OR the moon that could hope to truly understand? Yes.
