How Many Secrets Can You Keep | Self Para
Date: Mid March 2024 Featuring: Bob Warnings: None
Roz handles some business while she and Bob share a quiet evening at home.
Roz set her tea down on the side table and frowned at the sub-header on the Swynlake Squire.
“You see that fairy crown business, dear?” Bob commented as he squinted through his reading glasses at his iPad, which he was using to complete a crossword puzzle.
“Yes, I’m reading it now,” Roz replied. How had she never noticed that the crown was a fake? It was her job to know these things.
(The answer, of course, was that no matter how sharp her eye was, she did not have the expertise to identify a real fairy crown from a fake one. But Roz still felt that she’d let something slide).
She sighed. It was going to be a late night.
“I know,” Bob replied, assuming the sigh was one of exasperation at the situation. “Why can’t we all get along, huh?”
“Mm-hm.” Roz scanned the article again. One thing was for certain. She was very, very happy that Agent 120 had remained at the Squire.
She took out her phone and navigated to the locked folder that she used for RAS business, hidden behind an innocuous-looking health app that was activated by scanning Roz’s retina in her phone’s camera. This was no typical iPhone. Of course it wasn’t.
In that folder, Roz could access pages and pages of digital paperwork, as well as comms with HQ and the Swynlake agents. She scanned the paper into the system, then tapped away at a few more text boxes to provide additional context. It didn’t take long for HQ to respond.
The Swynlake team will handle. Send out assignments ASAP.
“Five letter word for deception…”
Alarm shot through Roz, but she managed to keep her expression neutral. “What’s that, Bob?”
“Five letter word, ends in a y…”
Roz exhaled. Ah, the crossword. This was why she knew doing RAS work in front of Bob was a bad habit to be in, even if he hardly suspected a thing. It made her so twitchy.
“Er, decoy?”
“Bingo!”
Roz smiled and returned to her work. The new agent, 113, could assist 120 with research. 202 would take the lead on liaising with the fairies, of course. And 404 would distribute the assignments, as agent handler. It was moments like this when Roz felt connected to the team, even if they knew nothing about her. And she felt like she was good at her job. Sorting through logistics, coordinating details, playing to each agent’s individual strengths, Roz had the many years of experience to do it all well.
She was just about to send the message over when she realized Bob was looking at her.
“What is it?” Roz asked, maybe a bit too sharply.
Bob frowned. “Never mind, dear.” He switched off his iPad and removed his reading glasses, tucking them in his pocket. “I ought to be getting to bed, anyway.”
“No, what was it?” Roz pressed. Another liability of doing RAS work in front of Bob: she tended to get absorbed in it.
“You’re busy. I understand-”
“Bob, don’t do that, I was just texting one of my girlfriends back-”
“Yes, yes, of course.” He nodded and stood up, waving a hand dismissively. “I figured it out, anyway. It was a new high score. If you can believe it.” Bob did not sound particularly enthusiastic about this.
Roz’s heart clenched. In moments like this, she did feel a bit guilty. But what could she do? A lot depended on her.
“Right, well-” Roz met Bob’s eyes, which looked very tired now. “I’ll be upstairs in a bit.”
“Alright.”
And then he was gone. Roz pressed “send” on the message and watched the little timer indicate that it had been sent to Agent 404. And then she sat there a little longer, staring at her phone’s screen without tapping anything else. There was nothing to feel badly about. She’d been doing this for over thirty years. It was part of the job. She couldn’t start getting soft in her old age.
And yet, it stayed in her memory, Bob’s tired eyes.
As she settled into bed, Roz gave Bob a quick kiss on the temple. He smiled at her. And Roz thought maybe it was all fine. It always was, wasn’t it?

"It keeps thrilling but of course it doesn't make sense for me people killing each other, even for killing you need reasons to" Daken told the other with a shrug. "That's true, you never know in DC".
Tumblr media
"I see, so you thrive during the chaos of the city?" bob didn't mind that personally, he wasn't one to thrive in chaos. he preferred the calm, like it was right now. "I am sure this won't last long. nothing truly does."

No, Roz did not take that seriously. She assumed Karen was just trying to get on her nerves. By this point, Roz knew not to rise to the bait. But that didn't mean she entirely kept her mouth shut.
"Does it matter? That wasn't a serious answer, anyway," Roz tutted.
Tumblr media
"Now, everyone can have their opinion," Bob attempted. Roz shot him a look, and Bob put his hands up in a sort of surrender gesture before standing up. "I think I'll see what we have for dessert..."

"Some of them truly are but there's still some nice people around here" Sally said with a nod. "True. Some people were just born to be mean".
Tumblr media
"here I was trying to give them the benefit of the doubt. They are just assholes." bob shook his head. "i guess no matter where you go, most people still are terrible."
