Feel like Fear and Hunger Termina was low key inspired by Kubrick, especially The Shining. Jeeves kind of reminds me of Mr. Grady/the "Great party, isn't it?" guy, in fact I think he says that at the Museum. The people in masks are kind of like a combination of the ghosts from the Shining and the people at the orgy from Eyes Wide Shut. There's a track called "All Work No Play," and the pictures for the B endings, *especially* Marina's one with Ghost!Samarie, remind me of the picture at the end of The Shining.

watching the shining 1997 (the made-for-tv version which stephen king co-wrote) and its really good, i think i actually much prefer it to the kubrick version. significantly more slow-burn and focuses on actually telling the story, whereas the kubrick version i find is more focused on atmosphere at the great expense of having actually well-rounded characters and a proper plot (sorry). same reason i dont actually like the exorcist movie that much, even though its everyone and their dads favourite horror, ive always thought that it actually barely tells the story and rushes to the part where shes all grisly and tied to the bed way too quickly, at the expense of the all buildup and backstory that makes the book actually disturbing.
#makes me realise how 2 dimensional every character is in the kubrick version.#jack is still an asshole but hes more of a conflicted asshole. wendy actually stands up to him and doesnt just spend the whole film crying#danny actually has lines rather than just staring in fear!

Unironically I'm so glad that the internet has turned on blue eyes, FINALLY I too can be considered creepy.
He is going to eat your soul
as if he isn't an actual genuine villain with brown eyes, this man killed his girlfriends mom and all his friends come on now

WAtched Kubricks Fear and DEsire and....Hooo boy
SO I love looking into the early works of auteurs, cause despite what you hear they seldom arrive fully formed ,but with benefit of hindsight you can see the start of brilllaince.SO I decided to check out the first film of Stanley Kubrick .If you wanna know my credentials ,I am not a super fan but I am fairly well versed in Kubrick ,having seen most of his features with the exceptions this film ,Killers Kiss ,The Killing,Barry Lyndon and Eyes Wide Shut (THough I only saw Clockwork Orange and Lolita once a long time ago and I dont remeber the second half of Full Metal Jacket AT ALL).Also for those curious my top 5 is 5.PAths of Glory 4. Sparticus 3.The Shining 2.2001 1.Dr Strangelove and I am just stalling cause Fear and Desire SUCKS ,it is....hilariously terrible .Like you do have seeds of the filmaker to be:IT looks gorgeous with the way it is shot and it dives int ant war themes (Kubrick loves anti war themes ).I also like the performance of FRank Silveraand the idea that its a nebulouys alternate relaity .....But all the rest of the acting is terrible ,the dialogue is pretentious, the constant voice overs are grating ,and its just unintentionally funny ,especially when one soldier declares himself a fish after going insane.I was laughing part of the time and bored the rest .......This is easilly his worst film that I have seen so far

#tag talk#an hour into space odyssey and it finally gets good cause they introduce Hal#ten minutes after the person I was watching with gave up and went to bed.#Kubrick please this first hour was fucking boring as hell#I heard so much about how the cut between the apes to modern times is so good but genuinely I paused it and rewound five times while laughin#like... this? this is the scene transition I've heard people fan over?#anyway. I muted the movie audio and put Nyan cat and ancient aliens and stayin alive over different scenes and it was great#gonna hang on to the rest of the movie because Hal just murdered someone so maybe it's good enough to watch with someone#ngl this is why I sometimes prefer watching movies alone. I can watch a bad movie with no fear of what my companion thinks#I don't have to hold room for “oh no what if they're not enjoying it? what if they wish we were watching something else”#it always comes down to that damn social anxiety doesn't it#like. I'm not interested in watching cats 2019 really. though I've gotten part way through it with various people#but I genuinely think I could watch the whole thing if I were alone. I don't care enough to. but I think I could#because watching the cats movie with someone sparks that secondhand embarrassment and cringe#anyway go watch that contrapoints video on cringe and shame and social behavior policing it's pretty good#all this to say. 2001 a space odyssey is very very boring#like. it's slow but not in the way Jaws is slow. that one actually succeeds with the anticipation and suspense. space odyssey doesn't#maybe it's partly because I've read the book? (Arthur C Clarke sci-fi is mid that's my hot take) but I don't feel like that's it#there's just no suspense where there obviously is supposed to be. the grand symphonic music in the background feels paper thin veneer#it's a grandiose front to a hollow scene.#also the flight stewardesses supposed to be walking in zero g with velcro shoes are doing such a bad job of it.#literally the first scene we see the shoes they zoom in and we explicitly see her rebalance catch her weight#CATCH HER WEIGHT - IN ZERO GRAVITY?????#anyway. I'm mad about that

All Stanley Kubrick's Full-Length Movies Ranked
Stanley Kubrick is without a doubt one of the most important and influential directors of all time. He did not make a lot of full-length movies during his career, but many of them are among the absolute best there are. Many of his movies are so great that ranking them is really hard. It feels like many of them deserve a top ranking. But let’s try anyway. The Shining (1980)Kubrick’s masterful…

going to eat peter hyams alive just watched 2010
#i. you. you cant.#i expected it to be not as good as 2001 and it was so much worse than i thought it would be#like yeah. kubrick burned most of the og material bc he was kinky like that. and they did a rly good job recreating it#and adding new things#but in terms of dialogue. cinematography. soundtrack???#genuinely. how did you fuck it up THAT bad.#i went in with a low bar and they dug to the center of the earth with it#at least we got reqium and thus spoke zarathustra. dunno what i wouldve done without them#you could have TRIED to make more than like. a singular symbolic shot#kubrick was an abusive dickhead but by god. he made a good fucking movie#he burned things in fear that anyone making sequels would fuck it up. and then he let you make a sequel. and you fucked it up.#like it didn't have to be great! for hyams to have had 4+ major roles in the creating of it he was prbly already taking on a lot of stress#but jesus fucking christ the dialogue and the shots sounds and looks like EVERY OTHER FUCKING ACTION MOVIE#YOU CANT MAKE A SEQUEL IF YOU ARENT GOING TO AT LEAST TRY TO FUCKING IMITATE THE ORIGINAL#like you could have TRIED to imitate it and not done a great job and i would have been so much happier!! you couldve tried!!!!#for the love of god could you have at least given me a correct shot of hal!!!#ive read the wikis for the sequel novels looking forward to reading 2010#bc ik they got the plot right. but. that was pretty much the one thing they got right.#also shoutout to keir dullea for somehow looking the same 16 years later. how the helld you do that#hold on rereading the wiki. wdym some of the characters were whitewashed. wdym max and curnow were bisexual and dated.#that. that better be true istg#ANYWAY.#i have to stop. otherwise i'll keep going.

Remembering Gerald Fried and Oliver Wood
Here is my combined remembrance of two entertainers we lost this weekend:
Remembering Gerald Fried 1928-2023
Oscar winning composer Gerald Fried as died at 95. He was a close collaborator with Stanley Kubrick composing his films Day of the Fight, Fear and Desire, Killer's Kiss, The Killing, and Paths of Glory. Music played a vital role in all of those films and the last two are quite memorable.
One of the Star Trek soundtrack albums from Fried
Fried also composed a lot of memorable music in television including Gilligan's Island (CBS 1964-1967), Star Trek (NBC 1966-1969), and Roots (ABC 1977).
The link above is the obit from Hollywood Reporter.
Oliver Wood 1942-2023
Cinematographer Oliver Wood has died at 80. He was director of photography on Miami Vice (NBC 1984-1989), Die Hard 2, John Woo’s phenomenal Face/Off, The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, and The Bourne Ultimatum.
one of the many shots captured by Wood, this one in Face/Off
