Recently, I started following the #Claude von Riegan tag and there was a recent Claude-hate post in there. Not overt vitriol, but I'm an overly sensitive person prone to negative thought spirals, so it has been hurting me with time. I tell myself it wasn't explicitly malicious, it was fairly dry/objective, so I shouldn't be bothered by it. And yet, I keep finding myself thinking about it.

And the more of these negative thoughts I repeatedly fall into, the more it makes me wish they didn't tag character-hate with the name of the character. That's just common courtesy in fandom. I've ranted in many a post about this. You don't tag your Kikyo-hate and Micchy-hate with just their names; I won't tag my Akechi-hate or Bakugo-hate with just their names. You make up your own tag. You add the word "anti" or "hate" to the character's name to make a tag that isn't just "the character's name", that'll be seen by all their fans. Because it stands to reason, if you like a character, you're going to search for *their name*. And the people who dislike a character will _disproportionately_ NOT search for that character's name. Please don't tag character-hate with the character's name; make up a new tag.

But an interesting thing happens with Claude's case. Because in canon, he is hated by lots of people. It's a big chunk of his backstory and motivations. And a big part of the Claude fandom is how we characterize other characters defending Claude and reacting to learning how much such a beloved person was hated in Almyra, treated as an outsider in the Liecester Alliance, and would be outright hated in Fodlan if his biracial background were revealed. It feels like a lot different than just a "disagreement over favorite characters" in the fandom. It's different than just "series fans arguing with each other" and "defending their favorite characters" with just their feelings for those characters as their only ammunition. Because in Claude's case, we have canonical characterization about how the character in question would react to being hated. And he turns around and uses it as fuel for his selfless dream. He shrugs off outright disparaging statements thrown directly in his face, _in canon_. (See Lorenz Supports.) He takes negativity with grace and doesn't let it weigh him down.

And that really helps me feel better. ^_^ I don't have to be stuck in my negative headspace, questioning if I'm wrong for liking a character. I mean, I already have so many delusions and distrust of my own thoughts from my depression; maybe "I'm wrong about a character I *thought* I liked too?????" O.o????? And then it's the more certain side of my thoughts and my unsquashable feelings, screaming to defend themselves, by justifying liking the character through ranting. So much ranting. Some of it posted online! o.o! But it takes a lot of that mentally screaming at myself and the void until I can convince myself that I don't have to justify my preferences to anyone. Just like what you like. But somehow, in this case, knowing how gracefully Claude reacts to knowing he's hated, somehow makes this process go a whole lot faster and more easily. O.o! It's kind of fascinating and amazing.

I really like how, even though he tries to be realistic about it, Claude still believes in the good of people as a whole. Like he KNOWS that his ambition is a pipe dream, he KNOWS there are some genuinely bad people in the world, but he just can't help but want to believe that people can overcome differences and be kind. He has so much hope, even with his upbringing - it's really touching 🥺

After finishing my first run of 3 houses my friend convinced me to choose another house instead of Golden Deer to get more perspective blah blah blah. So does anyone else who did the golden Deer route and then did another house for play through 2 feel like they’re betraying Claude or is just me?
