Twilight of the Gods:

this is the absolute perfect final boss theme of all time. the choir absolutely makes it feel like a monumental battle is taking place and the orchestra is simply divine

“Berkut…?” Hopeless happiness wavers again when Alm is faced with more hesitation from his cousin. “You’re…scaring me.”

Scared. Frightened. That’s the only way he can explain how he feels as he faces the mix of fury and fright on his kin. As he listens to what Berkut interprets as “You do,” only to be met with…lies. Not all of them are lies, made clear by the past of Zofian vs Rigelian. But the rest of it sounds far from the truth. Especially that last part with-

“Witch wife?!” He instinctively swipes one hand back with rage. “Don’t you ever call Celica by that aga-” Alm’s anger seeps through temporarily, only for the touch of salt onto his chin to serve as spiritual mediator. 

No, that’s not right. Berkut was not present for when Celica temporarily became the Fell God’s servant. He’d have no way of knowing… And if anything, the one with a witch-betrothed would be…him.

“Your ring. You told me…it was a memento of your mother,” Alm reaches his refrained hand toward the ring box, finally deciding enough was enough. It was his turn. “And I had it because…you gave it to me after our struggle. Back in Duma Temple.”

Suddenly, the surrounding party essences meant to invoke smells of roses and chocolates instead reek of burnt oil and melting bone. It's a smell he never wanted to whiff again, hence why he locked the portal gates immediately after coronation.

“You gave me no choice but to fight. You…you gave up everything you loved, under the guise of retaking the throne…my throne.”

It’s still not enough. He hasn’t recalled it all. If he really has recalled everything, then… Oh gods.

“You…”

How do you put it?

“You…you’re…”

How do you put it.

“You’re…supposed to be…"

Alm's hand rescinds. It's too late to hold it in now.

"...dead.”

And what of my adaptational bitterness?!

Not long ago, I decided to look at some of my favorite FE15 scenes with Japanese voice acting, given how fantastic the English dub is-- and something I picked up in the process is that the scene between Alm and Mycen in Rigel Castle has a couple of interesting changes that I wanted to lay out! Particularly with its most... iconic lines. Major spoilers ahead!

(Note: I'm not a native Japanese speaker, and I'm not entirely fluent, but I took two years of college classes and damn if I'm not putting that all to use here!!)

While I put together a document going through the whole conversation in Japanese and loosely translating it, most of it is generally the same, aside from two bits. You're also not going to get the whole picture just by reading the lines, as the voice acting does a great deal for both sides of this conversation, so I highly recommend you pull up the scene in video form as well.

Now, the first change is pretty brief! Specifically, when Mycen brings up Alm's birth during his whole spiel about how the gods are deteriorating.

Mycen: しかし、そこにアルム。お前が生まれた。(Shikashi, soko ni Arumu. Omae ga umareta.) But then there's you, Alm. You were born. But then you were born, Alm.

Alm: ！！ (*gasp*) ...! What does that have to do with any of this?

The second, more important one, is Alm's reaction to being Rudolf's mercy, and how Mycen responds to that. The exchange goes like this:

Mycen: それが愛するわが子であればこれ以上の喜びはない…… (Sore ga aisuru waga ko de areba koreijou no yorokobi wa nai…) So for it to be his beloved child, he could feel no greater joy… So for that death to come at the hand of his beloved son was… a mercy.

Mycen: ルドルフは、そう言っておった。(Rudorufu wa, sou itte otta.) Rudolf told me so himself. He told me himself that he could imagine no more peaceful end.

Alm: そんな…… 父さん、父さんっ……！！(Sonna… Tou-san, Tou-san…!!) That's... Father, father...!! And what of my peace?!

"Sonna..." on its own is a pain to translate, but the specific meaning isn't as relevant as how Natsuki Hanae says this line. Rather than reacting with even more bitterness because Rudolf's convoluted plan made no room for Alm's own say on the matter - him yelling at Mycen earlier for sending him to kill his own father is about the same already - JP Alm just... breaks down and cries for his father, essentially. And it's this difference in reaction that makes Mycen respond in turn!

Mycen: 泣くな、アルムよ。(Naku na, Arumu yo.) Don't cry, Alm. This is not the time for mourning or self-pity, boy.

Compared to something like "nakanaide" (please don't cry), "naku na" is more direct in just. You know. Telling someone not to cry instead of asking them. So perhaps there's a weight behind those words that I'm missing, but with his quieter and more even tone of voice, and the way he addresses Alm by name, it comes off as a lot gentler than how he scolds Alm in the localization.

Now, why were these changes made? Are they better or worse? I don't know! Sure, I'd like Mycen not to be kind of a dick to his grandson while he's feeling so vulnerable, but I can tolerate it because that's how I first experienced the scene, and their supports say a great deal more about how they feel about each other than a scene where they're both freshly grieving. More than that, though, I think Alm breaking down and sobbing and Alm sticking it to the man both get to something very important about his position here, something that Natsuki Hanae and Kyle McCarley also portray amazingly:

FE2 Novelization Book 2 Musings

Under the cut for spoilers regarding how the FE2 novelization portrays a major plot point from the game.

If you've already played FE2 or FE15 you'll certainly already know what it is, but avoid of you don't want to know the exact way the novel is written before reading it.

So Ozaki-sensei chose to reveal Rudolf is Alm's father much earlier on in the plot. In the prologue of book 2, specifically.

I don't know how to feel about that. Part of what adds so much punch to the reveal is it happening the moment Alm and his army land the final blow on Rudolf. You learn everything at the same time Alm does.

But hey, it's little tweaks like that that make for the best conversation about what improves or takes away from the quality of a story. I've mostly retired from essay writing, in-depth analyses, etc. because of the sheer time and dedication they require, but I'm still an English/Literature major at heart.

Oh boy, looking at my current draft the last line I've written in my WIP is a bit of a spoiler for my FE15 fic The Lion in Winter, so I'll pick a fic I've recently published. And so, at the end, she was not alone, as her gaze turned towards the coming troops in their march to Chalphy: towards a joint, unknown future.

This is the last line from the fic A Lioness Among Dragons, which is an Azelle!Nanna raised in the empire AU for FE4. I liked considering Nanna's core aspects (brave, regal, steadfast) not changing despite the difference in her upbringing, and these last lines felt like I was able to hit that groove?

more emperor fics; i have some where y/n gets fired as a servant, some reverse isekai drafts, and i have about a good long chunk of drafting for another vampire au where (spoiler alert) the emperor is not a nice guy and murders a bunch of people in the first chapter. the drafts are still there but i just don't know where to take the fic in the last stretch.

another emperor fic but this time it's an arranged marriage au (y/n is a noble of altair and i take the book canon and shake it vigorously)

edward chris von muir reverse isekai - i remember writing this. some really bad irl stuff happened and edward was the character i wrote a fuckton of to cheer me up. i'd still like to write it properly. in another fic i wrote an arranged marriage au and i still think i could write it and it'd be fun

i've written a janaff/reader and a janaff/reader/ulki but not an ulki/reader. none of the ideas i have have been any good though and i still feel like they're not cute enough.

"the ranch fic" where shinon fucks a bottle of ranch. nsfw but an ex-friend did it out of curiosity and then he told me not to tell anyone but then he aired my dirty laundry so i air his dirty laundry back.

more in lewd news for shinon/janaff i tried to write a motivation chapter 2 but i never could decide on what shinon was going to do. i had a couple ideas, like shinon and janaff meeting up and fucking or continuing their parasocial relationship. in my latest drafts of it shinon was going to doxx janaff and say the most egregious sort of stuff before going back to his NEET ways (now without a purpose because janaff would be disinterested) but i couldn't make it as sexy as the first chapter so i just didn't finish it

nordion vampireverse multichap fic titled "diarmuid chomps" where it's not actually about diarmuid at all and febail gets really sexy and saves y/n from the evil vampires... i wrote that fic twice but neither are any good. idea for another time

speaking about nordion vamps, doc titled "sex sex sex sex sex sex" where the vamps get down and dirty with y/n. OTL i want to post it but it's incompleted as FUCK so it won't see the light of day ever

kempf mermaid au i would have posted for mermay if i knew how to write it. but every draft i did just wasn't right and i think fe is too technologically historic(?) for what i want to happen so i might write it with some other fandom instead

One of the biggest topics I want to get around to with Alm (if it wasn’t obvious by my terrible lack of synonym choice on his dossier page) is his interaction with choices: both ones he went through as well as ones he must consider once the prophecy has run its course (...or has it?).

Alm’s path as a fighter and warrior comes naturally from his blood of the Rigelian emperor, though he is also being raised to fight and inevitably strike down his father for the new age. Still, even if this lifestyle was relatively forced upon him, he enjoys what he’s been taught and certainly takes it to heart. If he can consistently use the power he’s been given and commands to properly assist and protect the ones he loves, then he is living a good life.

I won’t give a one-by-one review of every potential choice that Alm has made or been forced to make and go over his approval, but just know that any that involves rescuing a life is one he does without regret. By comparison, the decisions that had him down his own blood, ones that he never had a say in, he far from approves of.

Yet still, if the outcome of all of his choices resulted in who he is today, a man prepared to carve a new age with a destined friend, then ultimately he can be satisfied. Room for improvement, most definitely, but satisfied.

So I'm a big fan of these two. (Who isn't) I just finished the GD route and seeing the end card for those two doesn't feel right. It was very sweet seeing the s-support how Claude want's to wait till he finishes his goals in life with the whole promise you'll wait for me etc. He is marrying her too. I just don't understand how he is the king if his homeland and Byleth is the new ruler. Then he just pops out of no where with an army to help. It doesn't seem finished How would that work out?

Is he trying to unite the two kingdoms?
