They’re having another reading session!

It’s almost been a year since my first ever post, so I figured it’d be the perfect time for a redraw! The original is… um… well… I’ve definitely improved lol

(Some updates and stuff below the cut)

I’ve been having a bit of art block when it comes to Luca stuff lately (besides the FDM comic). It’s not because of a lack of interest (this fixation has been going on for over a year now and isn’t stopping anytime soon), I just don’t have any ideas on what to draw. I have been thinking of writing, though. I have an entire doc filled with random ideas (shout out to the notes app), maybe I could flesh them out? I have one in particular I’d love to write, about Luca and Giulia’s time in Genova. It’s basically what I’d want out of a Luca series; seeing how the Underdogs spend their time apart during the school year. I might start working on that, actually! We’ll see, lol.

Festa Del Mare updates may slow down? I’ve had the whole thing written since I came up with the idea (thanks notes app), but now that it’s been a bit, I want to go back and rework the story a little. Not too much, though. I mainly just need to redraw the thumbnail sketches for the rest of the pages, which is gonna take a bit of time. Trust me, though, I do not plan on stopping this project. It’s way too much fun for me!

I also just want to thank you all so much for your support, it means the world to me! Each reblog and comment I get brings the biggest smile on my face, and can make even a horrible day turn into a good one. You guys are the best ♥︎

I’ve printed 3 minis so far, and I have 5 on the printer plate right now. Pretty stoked, ngl. The detail in them is exquisite.

I was feeling discouraged when I first started asking about 3D resin printers because everyone pretty much unanimously said if I struggle with fdm printers, I will struggle even more with a resin printer. I have S T R U G G L E D with my ender 5 plus (Hell, it still has issues I haven’t figured out yet). But honestly, this machine has so far been a breeze (knock on wood). I can see why it was the most recommended machine in my 3D printing groups.

It has been plug-and-play from the get go. It came assembled, I plugged it in, it calibrated itself, and then I put resin in the vat and BOOM I had a mini 2 hours later. One that exceeded my expectations by miles. I fully expected to have to modify and adjust every little factor to get a decent print. Granted, I still think I can get crisper details if I do whittle down my settings. But overall, I’m very happy with the results.

It also has a camera in it so you can view the progress live, and it automatically makes Timelapse videos. If you’ve been around a while you KNOW I love time lapse videos.

So anyway, if you’re looking for a good 3d resin printer- I cannot say enough good things about my Elegoo Saturn 5 ultra.

An Aurora Borealis is Localized Entirely Within my Hobby Desk!

Shortly after getting my first 3D printer this past November (a Bambu Lab P1S), I knew that I wanted to print a mech scale DropShip. Considering that I love the HBS Battletech PC game, I wanted it to be a Leopard dropship, but I couldn't find one that was in proper mech scale that was simple to print and based on that version of the Leopard. Then I found the Borealis print from Thunderhead Studios. This is based on the Aurora dropship, and i LOVE this thing. it prints in FDM BEAUTIFULLY and the fact that the drop pods can hold units in them tends to delight and surprise everyone who takes notice (and who wouldn't in that beautiful Sword of Light red!)

Painting this beauty took me about a month because I wanted to take my time with her. Also, she is my first concerted effort to really weather a model using the techniques I learned from a 1:1 tutoring session from local artist Devin Bush who's weathering game is absolutely top freaking notch.

I am most proud of the corrosion on the central pipes along the spine of the borealis and the battle damaged fin (the final image in the gallery). The latter was a build/print error I didn't notice until well into painting the model. I decided to play it off as a significant piece of battle damage that the crew hasn't had a chance to fix yet. Thank Blake that we always have that convenient excuse to cover up build/print errors!

Overall, I am over the moon with how she came out. Now to make up some excuses to put her into a game...

Have you had problems with durability or warping when shipping your dolls in hot weather? I’d love to start 3d printing my dolls but I saw people talk about those potentially being issues with PLA and it scared me off… I thought it was basically impossible to 3d print high quality dolls without a resin printer but yours look amazing!

i have shipped several dolls during heat waves this summer, and haven't had any problems so far. i don't think it's impossible to get warping during shipping, but also a hundred other things could go wrong, and PLA is not the only material that can break, so i try to pack my dolls well and not worry about it too much. in the worst case scenario, at least the warped parts would be easy to reprint and replace.

i also used to think an fdm printer wouldn't work for dolls, but i've learned to live with the pros and cons of it, because i just don't have a workspace where i can handle resin. in the end, i make dolls for myself, because i find it fun. i like running a little shop on the side, but if i was making crafts primarily for money, i would Just Make Something Else. so if a potential customer is turned off by layer lines or the material in general, i'm alright with that.

I was tagged by @sleightlyoffhand to list 5 topics I can talk on for an hour without preparing any material. You asked for it.

3D printing. This one was too easy. I could talk specifics of FDM machines and materials, or vaguely about other types. These range from SLS to DLP, to more niche high price models I'll never see irl except once. Like anything from Stratasys. Who I used to hecking idolize for having one of the first patents for 3D printing, other than the guy who came up with SLA.

CNC machines. This is probably an extension of 3D printing, as most FDM machines work pretty similar to most CNC mills, engravers etc. The code is the same (gcode). It can be easily written for simple processes like cutting, facing, and drilling. But, just as a slicer program converts 3D models to gcode, there are programs out there for turning 3D information into CNC gcode. It's just a subtractive process instead of an additive one.

The consequences of technology. Especially AI. It may be the best and worst thing to happen to humanity. I could rant about all the wonderful and horrible things that could arise, but it is probably better for both of us if I don't.

Minecraft. Maybe I quit lately, but I could still talk about the history from beta onwards. At least up until whatever update added the chat moderation. I really like pistons (old update) and I really like the bees (is that still considered new?). I love automatic farms, but they are more fun when you have a team that can use them. Don't get me started on redstone, or it will turn into a ramble about electronics and logic gates.

Crash Bandicoot. This place is not a place of honor. No highly esteemed deed is commemorated here. Nothing of value is here. What is here was dangerous and repulsive to us.

What on earth is 3D printing?

That's... a big one. Sorry in advance. It also gets a little technical. Folx, if you want to chime in in the notes what we forgot or missed, have at it, just be polite. Discussion is great. Being a jerk is not.

So you know that we sell 3D print planters (and some other stuff coming out soon), but we saw a lot of comments in our first post introducing ourselves that were curious about what 3D printing was, if it was resin printing, and how it worked.

We also didn't realize our ask box wasn't turned on until we saw a note after the post was up for several hours. Sorry! It's open now if you have questions or comments or whatever. Just be polite.

Well. We are not experts. We're going to share our own experience and understanding of what 3D printing is, most common methods, and why we do the kind of 3D printing we do.

So.

What is 3D printing?

In its all-encompassing definition, 3D printing (also called additive manufacturing if you want to get STEM-y about it) is basically creating a 3D object using a digital 3D model. The programs engineers use, like Fusion360, AutoCAD, FreeCAD, and others? Yeah. Those. Exactly.

If you're an artist, don't despair, you can create models in Blender (or whatever 3D modeler you use) and work with those for 3D printing.

If you're us, who only started modeling a few months ago, you use the program geared for children and young adults, and that's TinkerCAD. There's nothing wrong with it, it's just limited in what it can do compared to other programs. The massive benefit is it's free and the learning curve is also much more gentle than the sheer cliff we ran face-first into trying to learn the CAD programs or Blender.

If anyone has good sources to learn them (esp with Blender's new updates) we would be happy to try them. Because as much as we love 3D printing, modeling still gives us a headache.

So that's the most basic definition of 3D printing.

So, what's the most COMMON form of 3D printing?

Well, we'd say there are two:

Resin printing. There's several different methods, but the most common today still is SLA, or stereolithography. Basically, a UV laser marks a cross-section of part of an object on a layer of liquid resin. When it's exposed to the UV light it's cured and solidifies. Another layer of resin is put down, the laser process is repeated, and it continues until an object is made. What's nice about it is it lets you get high detail in very small objects, like minis for Warhammer or other games. There's also Digital Light Processing (DLP), which is like SLA but uses digital projection to expose more parts of resin to light. It can cure an entire layer at once, instead of only part. If you see a Warhammer figurine being sold, or any miniature, especially stuff for DnD or other tabletop games, it's probably resin printed.

FDM (fused deposition modeling). It's also known as FFF, or fused filament fabrication). This is what you probably think of for 3D printers if you ever saw one, where things are printed in one tiny layer at a time where a heated print head is pushing out filament in layers on a build plate. FDM is more common for practical prints, like car parts or manufacturing pieces. To us it reminds us of icing a cake. You can print with stuff like carbon fiber and nylons or flexible material like TPU. FDM is good for prototyping and larger objects, like our planters (last product plug, we swear) to. You know.

Houses.

We use FDM printing.

Why?

Most everything we're going to make doesn't need the detail that a resin printer provides. The smallest, jewelry, still isn't to the level where we'd need a resin printer -- FDM printers work in fractions of milimeters, and resin printers can go even smaller. That's not necessary for us.

Everything we make is going to be larger prints, which means more material. Filament (which we'll explain in another post) costs less than resin.

Resin is more toxic than PLA filament, which is what we use. We can handle PLA filament spools without gloves or protective goggles. Resin? Absolutely not. They ARE making plant-based resin which is less irritating, but we have no experience with it. If you do, chime in in the comments.

Resin involves cure time. You also have to wash your print after. That can add to the process time too.

So that's the extreme basics of what 3D printing is, the two most common types, and why we do FDM printing. We hope you found it helpful! We're going to try to make this a series to explain more about 3D printing in general so it's less mysterious for non-printers. What do you want us to talk about next? Let us know! Current 3D printing project: what I owe my friend from... getting drunk a year ago during a D&D session and promising her this tower.

I love the Fate's End towers. They don't require any supports, and they're so detailed and beautiful!! I only own the first round. I gotta buy the second.

I remember when I first saw the towers, 3D printers had JUST come out mere months before this. The Wizard tower was offered for free. I knew I'd never be able to afford a 3D printer, let alone make that tower, but I still downloaded the file under the hopes that, someday, little me would get a job. And someday, little me would save the thousands needed to buy a printer, or find means to make the tower at the high school printer. It was a dim hope, but a hope nonetheless...

Well. Almost 10 or so years passed. And man, did I save my ass off for it. But I bought the Anycubic Chiron on sale for a 10th of what printers less than half its size would have been all those years ago. It's the best large printer imo on the market, and being the gay I am, I printed out the Wizard tower in rainbow.

And there, I knew, my dream had come true. My life was fulfilled. The tower itself has proved nothing but a curse, giving me low rolls all the time during session, but I'll as the dice gods to fix that for me someday soon! It looks gorgeous otherwise, and is one of my favorite towers nonetheless. It's printed in rainbow PLA on an FDM printer.

Long story short, never give up on your dreams. With time and patience, everything can become a reality.

Look at this dice tower, and know: everything is gonna be ok.
