Summary: Someone has slipped something into Belladonna's drink, and she runs to the only person she trusts at Nevermore, Larissa Weems.

Belladonna Stillwell burst through the heavy oak doors of Principal Larissa Weems’ office, clutching her throat with one hand while the other pressed against the edge of the desk to steady herself. Her usually sharp eyes were wide with panic, and her breath was coming in shallow, rapid bursts.

“Principal Weems—help—” Belladonna gasped, collapsing into a nearby chair as her body trembled with the force of the allergic reaction coursing through her. Her skin had broken out in angry red splotches, and her lips were beginning to swell. The girl’s normally controlled, aloof demeanor was unraveling rapidly as her airways constricted.

Larissa’s eyes widened, her posture stiffening as she immediately recognized the signs. The calm and authoritative head of Nevermore quickly moved into action. “Belladonna, what happened?” she asked, already reaching into her desk drawer for the EpiPen she kept for emergencies.

“I—I think someone—put something in my drink,” Belladonna choked out between wheezes. Her voice was breaking, ragged and desperate. “I didn’t even see who it was—but they know I’m a normie—” The words came out stilted as she fought for breath, and Larissa didn’t need her to explain further about what she was implying. This had been an attack.

“Normie,” Larissa silently repeated, her face tightening as she thought of the lengths some might go to punish someone they considered an outsider. But she knew better than anyone that appearances could be deceiving. Belladonna had always seemed different, more perceptive, more attuned to the shadows within Nevermore. And now, as she looked into Belladonna’s eyes —eyes that flickered with a hint of something not entirely human— Larissa sensed that there was more to girl than maybe even she knew.

“Stay with me, Belladonna.” Larissa’s voice was calm, authoritative, cutting through her haze of panic. She uncapped the EpiPen and administered it swiftly, her movements efficient and practiced. “You’re going to be alright.” The reassurance was meant to anchor Belladonna’s focus as Larissa knelt by her side, one hand resting on the girl’s arm in a rare display of genuine warmth.

The immediate effect of the epinephrine began to take hold, slowing the worst of Belladonna’s symptoms. She blinked rapidly, eyes refocusing as she clung to Larissa’s presence, the fog of panic beginning to lift. But Larissa could see the underlying tension in the girl’s body, the way her hands still clenched and unclenched as if preparing for another strike. She was scared, which was another thing Belladonna was normally not.

As Belladonna’s breathing steadied, Larissa reached for the phone to call the infirmary, but her gaze never left the young woman in front of her. “We’ll get you proper medical care,” she said softly, though there was a note of something more, something protective. “But you’ll need to tell me everything when you’re able. Whoever did this will be held accountable.”

Belladonna nodded faintly, the initial adrenaline rush giving her enough clarity to realize how close she’d come to something far worse. “Thank you,” she managed, her voice hoarse but sincere. It was the first time she’d ever seen the stoic headmistress soften, even just a little. For once, Belladonna felt less like the invisible outsider, and more like someone worth fighting for.

As Larissa watched over her, she still couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to Belladonna than met the eye. A suspicion tickled at the back of her mind, one she intended to follow up on once the dust settled. For now, though, she focused on the immediate crisis.

“You’ll stay here and rest. Help is on the way,” Larissa assured her, squeezing Belladonna’s shoulder gently. Despite the chaos, a sense of trust, however fragile, began to form between them. And though the day’s threat had been neutralized, Larissa was keenly aware that this was only the beginning. Whatever secrets Belladonna Stillwell was hiding, they were inching closer to the surface, just waiting for the right moment to emerge.

Thank you for the birthday wishes, and forgive me for taking my sweet time to answer this. 😝

As this is actually a moment I plan on including in Belladonna's story, I’ll save the actual writing of it for later, but I’ll give you the rundown of how it’ll play out.

This is a pivotal moment for Belladonna, and the secondhand embarrassment from reading this scene will be palpable (I least I hope it will come across that way). While Belladonna has her wild streak, it’s been somewhat tamed/tapered by her time at Nevermore and in Larissa's presence especially. So when her former ways resurface, as they’re most prone to do while she’s in Jericho, Larissa walking in and seeing it is a point of realization for her. Sure, there’s embarrassment, but even more so, there’s shame. She doesn’t want to be this destructive, pent up, town pariah anymore. Maybe she never had, it was just the role that she felt was assigned to her since she never fit in anywhere else. She wants to be better, to be who she really is, and when Larissa returns later, near to the Weathervane's closing time, she sees Belladonna, cleaning up the mess she’d helped to make. It’s one of the first times she’s seen real growth from her.
