The Lady He Lost by Fay Delacour
A solid debut! Jane Bishop is an orphan who wants to run a ladies' gambling club, and remain a spinster for the rest of her life. The death of her best friend (and secret crush) Eli Williams two years ago has helped Jane stay on this path, despite snide comments from her cousin (and Eli's former fiancée), and her meddling uncle.
But when Eli turns up alive, having escaped from pirates, Jane's deep feelings return, although she's sworn to avoid the man who broke her heart. And when Eli is put on trial on suspicion of desertion, his secrets may tear Jane away from him forever.
I got through this book quickly which is really a testament to the author's writing because I just had to know what was going to happen, and when Jane and Eli were finally going to have it out. There's lots of pining from both sides, and neither is aware of the other's feelings. I do wish the plot was more fast-paced, and the ending felt rushed, plus I wanted to see Jane succeed in opening the club, but maybe that will be shown in the next books of the series. I really loved Jane's friend Della and her meddling. I'm hoping for her and Hannah's (Eli's sister) books next because I love how they already are giving their parents grief for being brazen, and I want to see more of the club!

March 2024 Reading Recap
Well, this is quite delayed, as we’re now more than a full week into April. BUT. It was delayed for good reasons! First, I GOT A NEW JOB 🙌 I was laid off in January and have spent the whole first quarter of the year job searching, and I’m so excited about this new role. It’s with a company I’ve admired for a while doing really amazing work in precision medicine for oncology. I started it this…

ARC Review of The Lady He Lost by Faye Delacour
Rating: 3.5/5 Heat Level: 3/5 Publication Date: April 2nd
Premise:
Everyone is shocked when Lieutenant Eli Williams seemingly returns from the dead after being lost at sea in a shipwreck, no one more so than Jane Bishop, who was his friend and secretly loved him despite his prior engagement to her cousin.
My review:
This is Faye Delacour's debut novel; it's a friends-to-lovers romance by way of unrequited love (I wouldn't really say there's an enemies aspect, especially if the enmity is so one-sided). Jane had feelings for Eli which she thought he did not reciprocate back in the day, then he was caught in a compromising position with her cousin and they were engaged before Eli was lost at sea. I'm gonna be honest: I did not expect the level of resentment Jane showed Eli once he reappeared, but here's my thing: Eli does not owe Jane anything. All he ever did was treat her like a friend before he was caught with her cousin (regardless of what he tells Jane later in the book about his feelings for her before the shipwreck, which I did not find very convincing), and what more, the cousin ultimately married someone else and Eli obviously doesn't feel anything for the cousin anymore. I'm very careful when it comes to checking my biases regarding "unlikeable" heroines or unlikeable things heroines do, and look, unhappiness over unrequited love is natural (though I'm always a bit annoyed when heroines are insecure about their appearance and compare themselves to other women like Jane constantly does with her cousin), but I'd be equally irritated with a hero if he behaved in a similarly rude manner towards his heroine, as if she owed him something.
That being said, I did find it funny when Jane's resentment towards Eli took a turn and she actively started questioning what he was up to during the years he disappeared and was ostensibly kidnapped by pirates, purely out of spite. Does she come across as a narc? Yes, but it's also kind of hysterical when she's interrogating him in front of his navy boss or a bunch of society ladies and he's anxiously trying to communicate through his gaze for her to Shut Up. However, her words do end up having actual consequences, namely, him getting court-martialed for possible desertion.
Eli and Jane begin a no-strings attached affair by the middle of the book, however, Jane is still under the impression he could never want her long-term, and that she will always be seen as second best to her cousin (who also fans the flames with her constant need to put Jane down and her insistence that Eli still has feelings for her), which is admittedly rough to read. There is also the ladies gambling club that Jane is trying to start with a friend, but I feel that subplot was mostly set aside as Jane became entangled with Eli once more.
The sex:
There are actually two instances of the rare male masturbation scenes in historical romance in this book; the second one immediately follows dry-humping and Eli can't wait anymore before jerking off in front of Jane. The good thing is, he reciprocates very thoroughly afterwards. There is also some surprise virgin rep.
Overall:
While this book wasn't quite for me, I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a friends-to-lovers historical romance that is very much a slow-burn as far as feelings go.
Thank you to Sourcebooks Casablanca and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review.

2024 Historical Romance MUST READ
finally, finally a 2024 debut historical romance i am legit excited for! and with a clinch cover i'm obsessed with.
big persuasion meets poldark vibes!!
if you enjoyed the "oh shit he's back from the dead and his former affianced is married to someone else now" and "i'm so mad he picked her over me i'll never forgive him" angst & ennui, let me tell you this is delicious.
Lieutenant Eli Williams has his ~reasons~ and he'll grovel for each and every one of them, because Jane Bishop is ✨worth it✨. Even if Jane has calculated the odds, and they are BAD for our buttoned up sea-man.
also, i super duper appreciated discussions of money in this book. Eli's family spends all of his inheritance (because he's dead! at sea!) and Jane is a woman being supported (luckily) by an uncle who loves her, but has no guaranteed future and a brother I'd like to punch in the throat a bit. Jane's attempts to start a gambling ring amongst the richer ladies of the ton felt a bit florence of FYF fame (IYKYK) coded (hell yeah) but with more ~stakes~ because Jane has not much to fall back on if it fails.
there's also some unpacking of the horrors of war // military service.
Snap this up, histrom readers! You'll absolutely want it ASAP.
Cannot wait for more from Faye Delacour; you can preorder now for April 2024!
thank you to @sourcebooks for the early review copy

*UPDATING THIS TO ADD THE STARTER CALL*
So I will be starting off the event on hiatus but then around a lot more. Below are all muses for plotting etc... I will do a starter call nearer the time but if you want to do any big plots etc... just like this and I'll hop into DMs. All plots will depend on the roll. For starters I will likely be dropping most threads pre-event except for very plot heavy threads but I'll try to wrap them up prior (may not happen because I am on hiatus) but we will see. Please specify which muse and who for otherwise I probably won't do them. I don't have the brain capacity to decide muses. xD Will cap at 3 starter requests per mun (not including plotted threads) and each muse at 4 starters. Please spread the love among my muses.

Can you recommend a novel either historical or contemporary where the hero and heroine discover sex together?
Sure!
Her Lessons in Persuasion by Megan Frampton is a cute fake courtship historical with a virgin hero and a virgin heroine.
This is a bit of a spoiler (though a lot of people guessed before I did lmao) but you can find this in In Want of a Viscount by Lorraine Heath. The hero actually knows a LOT about sex and eats pussy like it's his job, but for several reasons he has been avoiding the fiiinal thing, which is kind of a refreshing examination of virginity and what it means from Lorraine.
I was a bit meh on this one, but it was cute: The Lady He Lost by Faye Delacour has a virgin hero and a virgin heroine.

@kiissme liked the sneaky starter call!
& gets victoire for faye.
The famed first Weasley grandchild ; daughter of well-known Curse Breaker Bill Weasley and the part Veela Twiwizard Champion Fleur Delacour ; born on the second anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts ... working in a shop as a lowly assistant. A high-end Wizarding clothing shop in the middle of Diagon Alley, but the irony isn’t lost on Victoire Apolline Weasley. Especially on this day ; the other two workers had taken lunch, leaving the new girl while they enjoyed butterbeer and sweet treats while the owner said they would be back in a week after to a trip to Sweden. Or was it Switzerland? Syberia?
The bell to the shop rang shrilly to indicate a customer and the Weasley pinched at the bridge of her nose from the back room, while she waved her wand manically to begin, continue and conclude the endless tasks that were laid at her feet.
❝ Be with you in a moment! ❞ Welcome to Ludstrum’s Fashion and Clothing! We are here to assist in all your stylistic needs, for a chic Wizard is a powerful Wizard greeting be damned.
❝ Are you here to collect something or just browsing? ❞ Victoire asked when she emerged from the back room, her arms full with two cloaks and a robe that needed packed and sent out today ( and not later, she’d been warned by the idiots who had abandoned her! ) and enough rolls of fabric that she could only peek over to look at the redhead.
#kiissme#— [ 💄 ] ❛ 𝐕𝐈𝐂𝐓𝐎𝐈𝐑𝐄 𝐖𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐋𝐄𝐘 / interactions.#( it's been so long#i've forgotten how to write ;#forgive my rustiness ;#but victoire witch style icon? we stan )

Mid-Year Book Freak Out
Borrowed this from @thereadingchallengechallenge ! I usually lurk on Book Tumblr (I’m more active on Bookstagram) but wanted to do this here!
Number of books you’ve read so far: 32
Best book you’ve read so far in 2024: This is a tough one— probably Cantoras by Caro De Robertis.
Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2024: Tales from the Cafe by Toshikazu Kawaguchi (from the Before the Coffee Gets Cold series).
New release you haven’t read yet but want to: I’m subscribed to Book of the Month and Aardvark Book Club so there are many new releases I own but haven’t read yet. Particularly I’m excited for Anita De Monte Laughs Last by Xochitl Gonzalez and James by Percival Everett.
Most anticipated release for the second half of the year: Can’t think of one off the top of my head 🙁
Biggest surprise favorite new author (debut or new to you): Tommy Orange! I somehow haven’t read There There yet, but I read Wandering Stars and loved it, and will definitely have to go back and read his debut.
Newest fictional crush: Viola Carroll from A Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall.
Book that made you cry: I don’t cry often at books but I came close during Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield.
Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received): I haven’t read it yet but I love the cover of Isabel and the Rogue by Liana De La Rosa!
Book that made you happy: The Lady He Lost by Faye Delacour— it was a really lighthearted and fun Regency second chance romance!
What books do you need to read by the end of the year?: I’m not going to set that goal right now as I’m a mood reader and usually don’t plan that far in advance!
Tagging: anyone who’d like to join!
