I am starting to see more and more books with older protagonists. It's always a breath of fresh air to read characters that have more life experiences, good and bad, who continue to push forward and challenge themselves to make new new memories. Thanks to @bedazzledinkpublishing for the gifted copy. QOTD: What's a book you recommend that has an older or middle aged character? 💐SYNOPSIS💐 When fifty-something Naina Mehta’s husband unexpectedly dies of a heart attack, this imaginative suburban wife turns into a bold woman thirsty for new experiences, a far cry from the classic image of the aging Indian widow dressed in subdued colors and focused solely on her children and God. Naina also grew up in a society where historically widows have been expected to abandon all pleasure, particularly remarriage, and, in extreme cases, have even had to give up eating sweets, making Naina's foray into such  territory groundbreaking. As Naina becomes more empowered, she nervously dips her toes into the world of dating for the first time in her life. She might find that the possibility of love still exists for a woman of her age, but what happens if the man in question is Muslim and stirs generational wounds and the wrath of her conservative son? #womanofanuncertainage #books #priyamalhotra #bookstagram #tbr #bookcommunity #bookstagrammer #Indian #middleage #widow #aapi #aapibooks #reading #bookphotos #asianauthors #asianbooks #asian (at Bushwick) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci_TfVoLja5/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Happy book birthday to @msthienkim! I can't wait to dive into her second book! New Orleans? A boudoir photographer heroine? Opposites attract? SIGN ME UP! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ About the book: Boudoir photographer Josie Parks never ever takes a vacation. But when a client cancels a New Orleans shoot at the last minute, she decides to fly out from her Washington, D.C., studio anyway. Maybe the trip will reawaken her recently stagnant muse. After all, it’s Mardi Gras season… ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Spencer Pham has come home after twelve soul-sucking years in corporate hell to pursue his passion: making a docu-film on his family’s history as the first Vietnamese Mardi Gras krewe. The last thing he expects is getting whacked in the head by a beautiful woman trying to snag some parade beads. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ During a long night at urgent care, Spencer and Josie connect over their artistic pursuits. He offers to show her the real New Orleans, if she’ll help him with the camerawork for his film. Despite Josie’s type-A personality clashing with Spencer’s laissez-faire attitude, they seem to make a great team, and soon, the good times are rolling both on and off camera. But Josie has a life in D.C., and they both have big dreams they’re chasing. When this Big Easy fling starts feeling awfully serious, can they find a way to choose between personal and professional passion? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #romcom #bookbirthday #bookstagram #bookish #amreadingromance #romancebooks #romanceauthor #romancereader #AvonBooks #bookstagram #VietLit #aapiauthors #AsianBooks #dc #romcom #diverseromance #inclusiveromance #irromance #HappilyEverAvon #FullExposure #interracialromance #romancebooks #Romancelandia https://www.instagram.com/p/Co7YCeML1v3/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Southeast Asian Academia: Jose Rizal
If I had to pick something quintessentially Filipino and the very definition of Dark Academia classic text, it would have to be Jose Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. These are my Southeast Asian book recommends for anyone looking to diversify their reading.
Born on June 19 1861 during the Spanish colonization era of the Philippines, Jose Rizal was from an affluent middle class family. He studied in Europe where he met with other Philippine students looking to reform the state of the Philippines during Spain’s exploitation of the country. Jose Rizal’s novels, often translated into English as “Touch Me Not” and “The Reign of Greed” were novels about the corruption and injustices experienced by colonized Filipinos. However, despite Rizal’s political opinions (he still believed the Philippines needed Spain), his novels influenced the Philippine Revolution. He was arrested and executed for writing these books. While his goals were never for independence, his writings influenced the country yet again decades later when America was arguing for or against annexing the Philippines. Hpoetry was presented before congress as proof Filipinos weren’t “barbarians.” 🙃🙄
These are dark books, depicting the violence of colonization. And yet, I am left feeling like Rizal still had hope for reform in the country he loved so much. And I feel these books fit into dark academia. While these books are now essential reading for Filipino kids in Philippine schools and are read in Tagalog, these books were originally written in Spanish, the official language at the time it was written. Not only are these books classics, you get a sense of just how the amalgamation of European and Southeast Asian culture was in late-colonial Philippines and how it affects the country today. While I am *not a fan* of how my country lost parts of its pre-colonial culture, the clothes of the era when he lived and wrote continues to be an influence on our national clothes.
I think Jose Rizal is also an inspiration not only for Filipinos but for those who seek dark academia to inspire their studies. Jose Rizal was a student in many institutions in Europe and was fluent in many languages. I feel like this needs to be said because many nationals from Africa, the Middle East and pan-Asia traveled to Europe as artists or for work and education for centuries but people always argue that immigration is *new* when history says otherwise. Western education lacks this world view from the point of view of the colonized. So I highly recommend Jose Rizals books if you are looking for classical texts from outside of Europe.

#asianbookstagram and those of you who read API books for #apimonth2022 how was your reading goal(s) last month? I'm still finishing Imposter Syndrome by Kathy Wang but had to DNF Brown Girls and Loveboat Reunion. I understand Daphne wanted to write a book about brown girls collective struggles but, first of all, I personally hate the term "brown girls." EVERYONE knows the different races here in the U.S., so why not say that? I know it's wordy to list Mestizo Hispanic/Latinos, Middle Easterners, South Asians, South-East Asians, Indigenous people, and Pacific Islanders (all - with the exception of some Middle Easterners - who have brown skin) but you risk excluding some, like Black people who have brown skin, and including those who don't belong, such as naturally tanned White people. Second, while we "brown" girls and women have SOME commonalities, such as being 1st or 2nd gen Americans with parents who emphasize education as the key to overcoming financial barriers, we are SO vastly different in regards to culture, race, and ethnicity, that those attributes > our commonalities. I just couldn't vibe with that. As for Loveboat Reunion, I don't care for Sophie Ha. If you read the 1st book in this duology you'll remember how she leaked Ever Wong's nudes because she hated how her crush kissed Ever instead of her but faced NO repercussions! ik readers don't have to like every annoying character but there's supposed to be some change so the reader can @ least empathize with them! Sophie shouldn't have been 1 of the protagonists! Imposter Syndrome is a contemporary adult story about 2 women, 1 Russian (Julia), another Chinese-American (Alice), who struggle to juggle the price of serving their country while protecting their privacy. Julia secretly works undercover for The KGB (Russian Gov), sending personal data from her company to them so they can *supposedly* root out Western corruption "overtaking" their values. Meanwhile Alice finds out and has to determine whether to expose her or risk losing her job. Its part mystery-part satire! I'm enjoying it and plan to finish it. #api #apireads #apibooks #asianheritagemonth2022 #asianheritagemonth #asianbooks https://www.instagram.com/p/CeUXVCaPyiF/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

"Saints of Storm and Sorrow weaves an unforgettable journey into a world where gods walk among mortals and even the quietest whispers can spark a revolution. The thrilling action and complex characters provide a springboard from which Buba masterfully delves into the nuanced relationship between the colonizers and the colonized. Lush, vibrant, and spellbinding—this folklore-inspired fantasy gripped my imagination (and my heart) from the beginning and never let it go." Kyla Zhao, author of Valley Verified and The Fraud Squad
A great blurb from the lovely @kylajzhao Author of the Fraud Squad and Valley Verified, I couldn’t be happier to have a friend like you in my corner, yelling about each other’s stories at midnight will be something I always cherish. Publishing is such an arduous journey with a dozen ups and downs and I don’t know where I’d be without amazing authors like you always ready to cheer on the successes of others.

Just because the end of summer is near, doesn’t mean you have to let go of the sun quite yet. I’ve basically transformed my upstairs bathroom into a tropical plant haven, full of natural sunlight, humidity, and some incredibly hardy plants! t h e e p i c c r u s h o f g e n i e l o 🐵 👑 🔥 . What are some of your all-time favorite books? I don’t have much to say about this except for the fact that Genie Lo is literally one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE BOOKS. It’s so, so close to my heart and if I truly followed my heart’s complete desires, I would definitely be rereading this every other week. I am Not Kidding. I love this book so much. Thinking about it makes me want to reread it. . [📖] WHAT IS THIS BOOK ABOUT? Well... imagine a kickass protagonist who is absolutely relatable and sarcastically hilarious. And then imagine her having POWERS. Also, I’m in love with the love interest, Quentin. Like.................... very much. This also has Chinese mythology, an all-Chinese cast, and puts a spin on the Monkey King tale (which I GREW UP WITH as a Chinese child) and it’s just so so good. I miss Genie already. The sequel is actually coming out this fall or next spring AND arcs are available to request on NG/EW. Soooo. You should get on this series. . [🍲] Anyways, life update~ I JUST MADE HOMEMADE FRIES. 🍟 They weren’t as addicting or tasty as like, Burger King fries, but I guess that’s the sacrifice you have to make when you don’t put a ton of msg in your foods? (seriously how do they make their fries so delish someone please tell me. is it actually msg?) I made them in an air fryer with olive oil + salt and pepper, and I guess they taste better when you deep fry them, but... I literally hate deep frying so much because it evokes a visceral terror within me! . #diversespines #flatlay #flatlaynation #redbooks #rainbowbooks #epiccrush #genielo #asianya #asianbooks #sunwukong #monkeyking #youngadultnovels #bookaddict #booktography #bookphotography #readersofig #booksofig #readingaddict #bibliophile https://www.instagram.com/p/ByybSZdgz4x/?igshid=1jwzscecd91i0
