Aspen - Fauna

Fauna is the female companion of the god Faunus and is an example of the  characteristically Roman tendency to form gender-complementary pairs  within a sphere of functionality. It is unknown what Fauna's relations  to Faunus is: she's either his wife, daughter, or sister depending on  what source you read — and sometimes more than just one.

Fauna's name has been regarded to be derived from faveo and favere ("to favor, nurture"), because she nurtures all that is useful to living creatures. She also has the ability of prophecy and can foresee future events, which come to her in a madness frenzy.

Dyanna - Bellona

· · ─────── ·⚔️· ─────── · · Goddess of war, destruction, conquest, and bloodlust

Bellona is the goddess of war. One of the earliest etymologies of her name translates to "action of valor, war." She was worshipped by a number of cults in Rome, one of which was lead by priests who would cut their own limbs as blood offerings to her. In another militaristic cult, Bellona is often depicted alongside Virtus, the personification of valor. Considered a noble virtue, linking Bellona with valor implies that the Romans — although they recognized that Bellona oversees the destructive and bloodthirsty side of conflict — viewed her as the noble and valiant aspect of warfare as well. In poetry, the goddess represents the destructive and belligerent aspect of war. Shakespeare describes her as "the fire-eyed maid of smoky war." In art, Bellona is commonly portrayed wearing a plumed helmet and dressed in armour. In her hand she carries a spear, shield, or other weapons, and occasionally, she sounds a trumpet for the attack. Victoria (the personification of victory) frequently accompanies her, ensuring her success in battle.

Ekaterina - Pomona · · ─────── ·🍎· ─────── · · Goddess of fruitful abundance, plenty, the harvest, orchards, and enchantment

Pomona is a nymph-goddess who features eponymously in the first original Latin myth: Pomona & Vertumnus. The story is romantic, full of seduction and deception, and follows the wooing of Pomona by Vertumnus, the god of changing seasons. She is very shy and determined to focused on her gardens, but Vertumnus loves her from afar and sets in motion a plan win her. I won't spoil the ending for you, and you can read it yourself here. It's only a five minute read, give or take.

Pomona herself is a bit of a minor goddess but very important since she is so distantly Roman. While most Roman deities where adopted from the Greeks, Pomona is an original Latin creation. She is described as a enchantingly beautiful, sunny young maiden who is extremely dedicated to her work, but appreciates praise and comments from passersby. Her symbols are apples (the French pom, meaning apple, comes from her name), fields of wheat, gardening tools, and fruitful abundance.

Ghost - Flora

Although a relatively minor figure, Flora gained prominence in the springtime and a festival was held in her honor each year to celebrate the renewal of the cycle of life. She was depicted quite frequently in art during the Renaissance and enjoyed more fame in that era than she ever did in ancient Rome and has remained a favorite of artists and scholars ever since.

Penelope - Salacia

Salacia the wife and consort of Neptune, lord of the seas. Their romance is actually quite sweet: he wished to wed her, yet she was in awe of his position so she hid in the Atlantic. Neptune, greatly distressed by this, enlisted the aid of a dolphin to search for Salacia with the message that Neptune loves her and wishes to share his throne with her. Salacia readily accepted, and Neptune rewarded the dolphin by being immortalized in the heavens in the constellation Delphinus.

Salacia was the personification of the calm and sunlit aspect of the sea and the wide open waters. She is depicted as a beautiful nymph, crowned with seaweed, and enthroned beside Neptune, dressed in queenly robes with nets in her hair. Her name is derived from Latin sal, meaning "salt", and is sometimes literally translated to mean sensational.

At my desk at 7 1/2 – Wrote the few lines across the margin of page 220. Looking for an old Manchester Observer in which is a paragraph on the rights of women.

Take up (at 8) my letter written last Sunday to Miss McL– [MacLean] mentioning expecting M– [Mariana] for a couple of days and my promise to return with her for a fortnight or 3 weeks about the 31st. Then obliged to come back here for a few days, that it would be the end of January before I should be in London – Surely she would then be ready to return with me –

“I see that you are still, and that enough remains for Paris, and for me? Todo – For me! What can I do? Is it much, or little? ‘How little you still understand me’ – I lament over your thinking so, because perhaps every atom subtracted from your faith in my knowledge of you, may proportionally lessen my power to do you good – We know the efficiency of faith in working wonders – and I, perhaps, in spite of your scepticism, know you yourself better than you think – It is even possible, that I know you not less well than some whose penetration may seem to have more ‘in it of the intuitive and extraordinary’ – At all rates, may I not ask, did you know me well enough to guess, that I should muse over some parts of your last with deeper feelings of regret, then maybe trusted to my pen – There is more in the manner of doing a thing, than we are some times aware –

‘It is visible the fright some of your friends are in . . . . . . . Set your mind at ease, and you of your friends, you may depend on they need not dream even of a possibility of your being obliged to infringe on the liberties of’ – . . . . Then on page 3 little chit chat, answers to the different, other parts of her letter – Sorry for the bad accounts from Han Dieman’s land, etc. etc. Should like to be in the same house with her – Independent of the pleasure of her society “it would save me nearly 1/2 – I should not keep myself and Cameron under 2 guineas a day” –

“ . . . Have you been at Richmond Park? Poor Vere! May she have chosen well; and may she speedily be happy to her heart’s content! But checkered are the paths of life and love; and, after all, ‘tis but to all a vale of shadows in which we walk – Who would be immortal here? None, None, Sibbella, who have felt, and thought, and passed the age of thirty-five! How often those who seemed happiest have sighed in secret, and longed to flee away, and be at rest! But good night! I am beginning to prose – ‘Twere better far to nod’” –

Breakfast at 9 – Meant to have gone to Lightcliffe church, but it began to rain at a few minutes before 10, and no likelihood of fine weather so staid at home – My father went to church in spite of the rain – Staid talking to Marian about his queer temper throwing away of prospects, etc.

At 11 40/60 Marian and I read aloud the whole of the morning service in about 38 minutes – Then staid talking a while and came upstairs at 12 3/4 – Wrote 9 lines small and close at the bottom of page 3 of my letter to Miss McL– [MacLean], and 14 lines on the ends dated today – Her not hearing from me not owing to forgetfulness – Waited as she would – Of course conclude, to tell her something tolerably certain of my plans – Still unable to fix – Had scarcely written the first 3 pages when all was upset – M– [Mariana] prevented coming and I prevented going –

“Know nothing beyond the improbability of my being able to get off from here before the middle of next month, and that I shall avoid the necessity of returning if possible . . . . . . . . . If you understand me at all, you will be quite sure, that neither yourself nor your last letter has been long unthought of –

You have been daily with me in mind, and under graver circumstances of moody musing then you may have dreamed of – For every idle word that you have ever heard me utter, and for every written word that, faithless to my heart and to my intention, may have ever caused you any feeling of vexation, I entreat your forgiveness –

I, at least, ought not to be the one to add in any way to your annoyance or uneasiness; and we will try if it be not possible to make you forget all that it would be doing me a kindness to forget and to remember only what may give me a lasting claim to your good opinion and regard – I hope you will have no reason to repent trusting yourself across the water – But tho’, as you tell me, ‘the idlest of the idle,’ write me one cheering line or 2 as soon as you can, and believe me always your very affectionate friend AL– [Anne Lister]”

Till two and twenty minutes writing the last thirteen lines and what I wrote to Miss MacL[ean]. What will she answer? She does not quite expect all this perhaps. Has thought me huffy. I have treated her with too little romantic loverlike attention of late. Too much as if I had got all I wanted. Can I be more on P’s and Q’s when we next meet? I must try and then we shall doubtless do admirably. One does not like the not being able to get a thing, but otherwise I have had enough of particular intercourse with her –
