Faux: AGH- OW-
Masterson, not looking up: This is just like that saying with the mosquito and the guy's nuts
Masterson: What was it?
Masterson: You learn to solve problems without violence when there's a mosquito on your testicles?
Faux, writhing in pain: SHUT Up.

classy! from the drabble checklist for our loves maggie & vince 🥂
classy: our muses go to a formal event
she’s seated, drink in one hand, another hand in the other. she spent hours on her feet, discussing things with other young adults, many her age, some younger, some older. she knows she’s not educated as much as they are. they talk with a bit of flavor and maggie has to strain herself to keep up. thankfully, the pain in her feet gave her a reasonable excuse to sit rather than her social ineptitude in a place like this.
vincent had to get something at the drug store before they had head out earlier. she was still in the bathroom and had said she’d meet him in the lobby.
in all frankness, deciding to take the weekend to go to boston for her sister was the best choice she’d made. it meant maggie wouldn’t be home. she’d be removed from everything and she and vincent could just exist in the same world, without the complications of their lives. mostly her life. they slept in this morning and their sheets were twisted and it felt like far too long of his fingers running over her face and through her hair before they even got up for a lunch. they could just walk a city they were less familiar with, hand in hand, eating good food, shopping at unfamiliar stores. vincent liked going to other people’s local bookstores, see what they did, and what maybe he could take from. he always felt the need to buy a book at each one, though. saying he’d feel too bad not supporting them properly.
he’d sneak her into a corner at one, a secluded little nook where he’d pressed her against the bookcases and kissed her. he did this at his own store, too. in afternoons when hardly anyone came through. pressing himself against her and making her body warm. even this time, his hand traveled up her thigh, her floral dress riding up around her hip. it was hard not to sigh against him when his touches set fire to her body. sighs that would make it hard for him not to chuckle, and pull away before they could get too far in the bookshop. he bought two books at that place, feeling he owed them for doing something so inappropriate at their bookstore.
they had to go home early because he noticed her eyes lingering on him too long, and her hands staying on his person, nails gently scratching the back of his neck until it was clear that his damage had been done. maggie was never happier to cut shopping short.
after everything, she watched him get dressed. they’d showered, and she sat in their hotel bed, wrapped in her plush robe, and saw as he slipped into his suit. she made comments along the way, saying how good he looked. she couldn’t stay seated for long, having to get to her feet to do his buttons for him. wrapping her arms around his neck for another long kiss. had he not pulled away, they would have been sucked back into their own world.
he had to go, and she still needed to get ready. he had seen her dress by the special plastic wrapping it had. she’d told him she bought it two years ago on a whim, hoping to god she’d have a reason to wear it again. there were many benefits to going to boston. seeing her sister, spending time alone with vincent, also wearing this dress which cost almost as much as her rent.
she did her hair in the curls she never gave herself. put on the huge sparkling, albeit faux, earrings she’d bought. everything was perfect. the makeup, the shoes, the clutch. she felt like she was ready for any sort of gala. instead, they were going to spend the evening with scholars, talking about things she didn’t understand.
but it didn’t matter because when she stepped off that elevator, and walked towards vincent was was waiting in the lobby seat, seeing his eyes shift over her made all of the bullshit she was about to put up with, beyond worth it.
he hadn’t said anything to her for minutes. in fact, he couldn’t get up from his seat until the minute the car pulled up to the hotel and they needed to. she just stood, hands on her hips, looking down at him with her red painted lips, smirking, expecting whatever smart thing he was going to say. then he didn’t say anything.
it wasn’t disappointing. she knew she looked good. she saw in his face that she looked good. she was just surprised that it left him speechless, for that long.
then he took her hand on the way to the car. opened the door for her, closed it behind her, and the second he was in on that side, he grabbed her hand again and placed it in his lap. he just gave her a smile when she looked over.
he shaved for this. she liked it because she could see the lines on his face and the details that his beard normally hid. he looked like he belonged in a room of scholars. she looked like his beautiful prize. maybe on paper that sounded bad, but it was vincent, and being his prize was the greatest feeling of all. he was her’s, too.
when they got out of the car, and signed themselves in, vincent tugged her hand and she leaned in, his head tipping to say something to her.
words that made her stomach flip and her heart throb and everything in her body tingle. the feeling of being seen. the way you want to be seen. the way she’s only ever wanted anyone to see her. whispered in that one sentence.
she’s thought about it all night.
it was impossible to break them apart. she sat with him, hand in hand, letting the index finger of her other hand trace against the back of his as she listened to people speak, and present. it wasn’t until her sister had gone to the stage and maggie had to clap for her that they’d actually broken apart. however, when they were finished, vincent’s hand went right back to her thigh, resting over it tenderly without even looking.
the speaking event had ended and everyone could go back to their mingling. instead, maggie turned to vincent, giving him a smile. “your sister is very smart.” he grins.
“she is. i don’t know where she gets it because the rest of us are idiots.” she snorts.
“i think you’re a close second.”
maggie sighs, raising her hand to his shoulder. “thank you for not trying to prove me wrong and understand she definitely is the smartest.” there’s a lot of reasons. maggie thinks the smartest choice her sister ever made was moving away. she wished she’d done that, too. if she hadn’t met someone who kept her there. and then met someone else who kept her there.
“i’ve also met your brothers. bar’s low.” he shrugs, and she laughs.
he hand comes down to wrap in his, giving it a tight squeeze. she reaches out with the other, grabbing ehr champagne and taking a sip. she finishes the whole glass before setting it down, leaning back in vincent’s direction. “i really want to go back to the hotel.”
he looks her over. his eyes linger over every bit of her. her way of leaning in making his eyes linger down his dress for seconds longer than he did looking over her face. it made her smirk when he replied. “i’d like that too.”
she hums, leaning in to kiss the edge of his lips gently, so she wouldn’t leave a mark on his face. she could see when she pulled away she was starting to pull at his thread. she estimated another hour before he’d need to take one of his “breathers” in the bathroom. she never wanted to do that to him.
“we’ll say hello to my sister and leave.” she squeezes his hand again and stands up. with the ridiculous heels, they’re eye to eye, which is a nice way to be. at level with one another, just the way they were.
she walks towards her, as she’s gathered around her peers, talking and laughing. maggie likes seeing her enjoy herself like this. ellen didn’t have it easy. well, none of them did. but maggie knows that her isolation is what brought her to the best part of her life. maggie might have had it easier growing up, taking care of everyone and being the peacemaker, but it trapped her in their lives forever. they grew too dependent. now? no one depends on ellen. she can do whatever she wants. she’s happy for her. a bit jealous sometimes, but happy.
“hey you.” maggie says, grinning. “you sounded amazing.”
ellen looks up from her friends. she wasn’t one to burst into a hug. of all of them, she likes maggie the most. otherwise, she wouldn’t have been invited. “oh, thanks.” her voice is deeper than maggie’s. she sounds more intellectual. “everyone, this is my sister. she’s a teacher.” everyone nods, and maggie gives a rather insecure wave. she didn’t want to do more of this.
“what do you teach?” one of them asks.
“uhm, second grade.” she shrugs.
“shaping the minds of our youth. important job.” someone points a finger and nods. “not to mention putting up with those little shits.” there’s a few laughs and maggie follows, albeit nervously.
vincent gives her hand a squeeze, reminding her he’s there. that fact alone is a bit of a relief. but then ellen catches his eyes and she looks around to the other group. “i’ll catch up with you guys in a bit.”
the others drift away and it just leaves the three of them. maggie lets go of vincent’s hand. “this is my boyfriend vincent.” she gestures, and he steps forward, extending his arm for a handshake which ellen returns.
“nice to meet you.” she nods. “maggie usually finds a way to bring you up when she calls.” it’s a polite smile, and maggie has a hard time reading this situation. she told ellen she’d be bringing vincent. she seemed alright with it. though ellen’s always been good at covering up how she feels.
“i do the same.” he shrugs with a laugh. “you were really great up there. i don’t think we understood much of it but it sounded amazing.”
“thank you.” ellen nods. her body then shifts towards maggie. “and he’s... cool, with everything?” maggie raises an eyebrow, not sure what she means about everything. “like, brady and todd and sarah and stuff.”
“oh.” she sighs, “yeah, he’s the one having to calm me down most of the time.” she presses her lips together.
ellen crosses her arms over her chest, looking at vincent. “she deserves better, you know.”
“excuse me?” vincent pulls his eyebrows together.
“the way they treat her. she deserves better.”
“oh.” vincent nods, putting a hand on maggie’s back, who’s clearly getting a bit uncomfortable. “we make it work just fine.”
ellen shakes her head. “they’re shit. mom and dad don’t even call anymore.” she shrugs. “she’s been through too much to have her happiness ruined by those fucking losers.”
“ellen, we don’t need to have this talk right now.” maggie whispers.
“i just want him to understand.” she holds up her hands in defense. “like clearly you guys are happy and after that last douche, you felt like you weren’t going to get that and like, i’m happy that you are! you tell me all the perfect fairy tale stories and i’m happy for you. i just want him to understand that it shouldn’t be ruined by their poison.”
maggie’s face gets a bit red. she thinks about how much it already does affect them. a lot of her life is shaped around taking care of her siblings who can’t do the same. her nieces and nephew are the easy part. she shakes her head. “i appreciate you wanting success in my happiness.”
“no one deserves that more than you, mag.”
“then we agree on something.” vincent cuts in. “i get you’re protective and you’ve been there for all the things she’s suffered from, and puts up with, but i don’t want her less than savory situation to get between us. i love your sister a lot, she makes my life brighter and i’m not going to turn that in because her brothers are rotten.” he shrugs. “but i love maggie because she’s one of the kindest people i’ve ever met. she tries so hard for other people. she tries that hard for me. i’m never going to tell her to change that unless it’s absolutely necessary.”
ellen stands there for a moment, taking in his words. her arms cross over her chest and she sighs. “i hope you know when it becomes necessary.”
“if i don’t, i’m still going to be there to help her through it.” he shrugs.
maggie looks over at him, and he looks back, rubbing her back and giving her a smile. if it weren’t a familial situation, she might kiss him. but that seemed very inappropriate for the tone of the situation.
“all i can do is trust you.” ellen shrugs. “it was really nice to meet you. hopefully we can catch brunch or drinks or something before you guys leave.” there’s a pause. “sorry for unloading. i’d just been thinking about that a lot. i’m sure it wasn’t fun for a first impression.”
“you just care. i’d probably do the same.” vincent gives her a kind smile, and pulls away from maggie to reach out for another handshake, this time clasping his other hand around her’s, giving one of those dazzling smiles he gives. “i’m happy she has a sister like you.”
ellen raises her eyebrows, returning that handshake before pulling back and looking at maggie. “whoa. it’s like he switches it on and sudden he’s a prince.”
“it’s scary.” maggie nods. she steps forward, pulling her sister in for a hug. ellen doens’t return it as tightly, but she never does. when maggie pulls back, she kisses her cheek, earning a cringe. “i’ll text you tomorrow.”
they exchange last goodbyes and maggie takes vincent’s hand, leading them out the door where they sit against a large rock, waiting for their cab.
“i appreciate what you did back there.” maggine traces her finger over his hand, which rests on her thigh. “sometimes i worry it’ll be too much for you.”
“no.” he shakes his head. “you’ve brought such joy to my life, it wouldn’t and even if it does, we’ll work through that together too.” he gives her a squeeze and she smiles, leaning into his shoulder.
“you’re the best man i know, vince.” she kisses his jaw.
“that’s a nice award to win.” he tilts his head, looking at her from the corner of his eyes. “you’re the best woman i know.”
“glad it worked out like that.”
“me too.”
he rubs over her thigh a bit more. moments of silence pass, sitting beside each other, and then he speaks again. “i know we had this very special moment just now but your dress is very distracting.”
she laughs, wrapping her hand around his. “i don’t think that will be a problem for much longer, trust me.”
“thank god.” he whispers. “i’ve been thinking about taking that thing off of you all night.”
