The #MarysiaCardigan pattern from @vert.and.rose is out now! I know I haven't posted about it up to this point, but life was a bit busy around the knitting, so posting was a bit low on the list of priorities. But! Check out this super cute pattern that I test knit! . . . . . . #buttercupyarnart #testknit #fattestknit #fattestknitter #plussizetestknit #plussizetestknitter #cardigan #knitcardigan #knitting #yarn #yarnart #fiberart #fibreart #crafting #diy #finishedobject #knittedcardigan #handknit #handmade #handknitcardigan https://www.instagram.com/p/Cnkv_hdJSga/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

So, just having sizes labeled XXS-5X doesn't always mean much. I typically wear a 3X in the bust, and I've seen patterns that have those size LABELS wherein the "5X" wouldn't even fit me. The Craft Yarn Council has sizing guidelines up to a 5X which are a great starting point. An understanding that not every measurement will scale to the same extent is also necessary - my wrists and neck aren't as much bigger as my bust and waist are, so scaling the cuffs up as much as the full bust would create a ridiculous-looking sleeve.
If you're planning on releasing a pattern, I have two major suggestions that will go a long way to making sure folks at a wide range of sizes can actually wear the finished project. First, get it tech edited. I understand that this is expensive, but please trust me when I say that tech editing will VASTLY improve your pattern. Second, get it tested. Seek out testers for every size. This will do two things for you. Firstly, it'll make sure the design comes out as intended at every size and fits as intended at every size. Secondly, you'll get photos you can share of a wide range of sizes wearing the design. A lot of the fat crafters I know (myself included) are very wary of patterns that claim to fit them, but which have never been knit by someone of a similar size. If I can only see it on thin bodies, I have no idea if it'll work on my fat body. If you have trouble filling out the largest sizes for the test, the Instagram account fattestknits can help by sharing your tester call.
I know this sounds like a lot of work - that's because it is! Designing something to fit a large range of sizes is difficult. But if you make the effort, it will pay off.
okay I have what might be a stupid question but google wasn't super helpful - in terms of pattern making, what size range generally makes a pattern size inclusive? both so I can evaluate the patterns I'm seeing and because I'm working up to make my first ever piece from scratch, and if it goes well I want to know what I'm aiming for if I figure out how to publish it
In my experience, sizes from XXS to 5X are usually included when a pattern/brand describes itself as "inclusive". I might be wrong, but I don't think their is one solid definition.
I'll open this up to the community--what do yall look for in a pattern for it to be size inclusive?

📣Attention yarn magazine editors and publishers, article writers, bloggers, influencers, designers, tech editors, pattern graders, etc. all over the world. The public needs to be made aware of garment sizing issues in the yarn community‼️ I want to thank @fattestknits for taking a stand against commercial sizing labels and inspiring me to use my voice. 🔅If you didn’t get a chance to read my post yesterday about size labeling and fit, I encourage you to do so. From the feedback and comments, it seems that everyone in the instagram yarn community chooses bust measurements over “garment industry (commercial) labeling” when sizing a garment. Yay!!!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 It was also brought to my attention that European and American size labels are different … which further proves that using “bust measurement” labeling for sizing, is more important than ever. We need to remove XS-5XL labels and EDUCATE consumers at the same time. Every single yarn enthusiast needs to know that commercial sizing does not work with handmade garments. We cannot assume that everyone knows this. An explanation should be written into all books, magazines, pamphlets, booklets, posted on websites that sell patterns, along with any other public domain that I haven’t mentioned. Publications already include standard yarn weight definitions, hooks/needle sizing as well as stitch definitions and abreviatons. 🤔Why not have one extra little statement that says “handmade yarn garments are sized according to bust size for a more customized fit…therefore standard garment sizing does not apply”? 🤷🏻♀️ 🌸Every body is beautiful. Every body deserves to look great and feel like a rock star. Proper sizing is the first step in celebrating your beautiful body.🎉. 🔸Pattern: The Rambler Vest…Releasing next Wednesday!!!!! 🔸Designer: @baahumble 🔸Yarn: Cascade Prima Cotton 🔸Size shown: Size 4 (46” bust) (at Maurice, Louisiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSxJhB3LNL5/?utm_medium=tumblr

Slow fashion. I first made this tee about 15 years ago. Timeless style conceived in 19 sizes. Soon to be a test knit in those sizes, or your own size at your gauge! This is done flat and is a fast knit at 3.5 stitches to the inch. I design garments you will live no matter how long it takes you to finish. Big Sur test knit will open mid-May. #testknittersofinstagram #fattestknits #knittingpatterns #slowfashion #slowknitting #knittersofinstagram #knitaholic #knittersgonnaknit #knittinglove #fashionknit #passionknit https://www.instagram.com/p/CdGx9FAJf-c/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Love to knit and work with designers? This could be a great gig for you. I use sample knitters to achieve my vision. I have too many ideas to do my own knitting, and knitters are often technically more precise than I am. If you are a loose knitter, even better! LMK if you are interested.
