I had to get a comprehensive physical for my new job. The doctor who examined me asked me what I plan to do about my weight. She told me that, despite being relatively healthy overall, I needed to lose one hundred pounds. I asked if weight loss was a requirement for the position I was offered and she said no, but that she felt obligated to mention it. Keep in mind that I have never met this doctor before. She is not my primary care physician and has never treated me outside of performing this physical for the purpose of employment at a job where I will be sitting about 90% of the time. Additionally, I passed the physical with flying colors, despite having a lingering sinus infection. This is what pervasive fatphobia looks like. Could I have mentioned my recent weight loss or my regular exercise habit or my tendency towards mindful eating and portion control? Sure, but I refuse to present myself as a "good" fat person to people who will only treat me with respect if I'm checking off their boxes of acceptable fatness. #fatphobiaisbullshit #fatphobiaisreal #pervasivefatphobiainthemedicalfieldkills #concerntrolling
