Feature: Fatima Mansions

Strange times feel very much like Fatima Mansions times. 30 years on, Viva Dead Ponies still feels an album on its own. An eclectic mix of angry, bleak and funny songs interspersed with musical interludes from raging noise to operatic warble to clockwork melody. Is it worth 5 copies (even if with 4 different covers)? Yeah. And You're A Rose remains a great single.

The first few Fatima Mansions records set the idiosyncratic tone. Against Nature had some melancholic balladry, but set against some hard electronics and what sounds like an evil Rick Astley SAW tune. Blues for Ceaucescu is a wonderful monster which retains its bite. The Hive EP title track is glorious chaos and there's a Ministry cover to boot. Oh and the Last Poets sample on the Only Losers Take The Bus remixes found its way into the chorus of EMF's Unbelievable via producer Ralph Jezzard.

Around Bertie's Brochures and Valhalla Avenue there was the same mix of styles as earlier Fatima Mansions but including some lovely songs to showcase Cathal Coughlan's voice. There's some gorgeous covers on Bertie's Brochures and a version of The Waterson's The Scarecrow on the Evil Man 12". But the twisted version of Bryan Adams' Everything I Do brought their biggest 'hit'. Yeah it was a double A side with the Manics' Theme From MASH, but that didn't stop the Cork Examiner lauding a local top 10 single. The raging destruction of REM's Shiny Happy People remains a favourite, though little more than a warped chorus remains of the original.

I have been mourning the loss of several heros, especially John Lennon and Frank Zappa. I wonder what they would say about our current strange time. I have also been thinking about The Fatima Mansions, a band a quarter of a century ahead of its time. I have been listening to the later songs by the vocalist of the band Cathal Coughlan and wonder how he is getting along these days. He is a brave truth teller who can sing, “it’s been awhile since you said heil, you CIA-bred necrophile” (the song Popemobile to Paraguay from the album Lost in the Former West) & other great anti-authoritarian songs.
