The Delights of Poison
Post 1
What’s covered: 3 different types of poisons you can use in your stories to kill off characters, plus what these poisons do and how they can be utilised by your characters. (sources are at the bottom of this post)
Hello fellow writers and welcome to the glorious art of poison, an area of murder I reckon is most overlooked. When you think of murder, you probably imagine guns, knives, axes, etc. The problem with these tools? They’re messy, they’re gory, they’re easily traced. Unlike poison. I personally love writing murder-by-poison just because there are so many different ways you can use them. You want a long-lasting, painful death, to make your characters suffer? Poison’s got your back. You want a slow and quiet death, so you can easily escape the crime scene and be in a different country by the time the victim is even dead? Poison is knocking on your door.
Here is a list of my top three favourite poisons to use in your writing.
First, honourable mentions: Thallium, Polonium-210, Mercury
Coming in at number 3, we have arsenic. Perfect murder weapon if you’re writing a story set sometime in the past (i.e 1880′s) , where detection of arsenic was much harder and slower than it is today with modern technology. If you’re writing a modern-set story, I’d personally stay clear of arsenic. It is too easily detected and isn’t used as often as it was throughout human history. 
Arsenic is a metalloid (Atomic Number 33). When mixed into food or drink, it is colourless, odourless and tasteless. This means characters can easily be tricked into consuming it. Symptoms of a large dose resemble fatal food poisoning, meaning that detection of the poison may be overlooked as a bad serve of chicken at a restaurant. However, given in smaller doses over a large period of time, symptoms of arsenic poisoning are subtle and slow-progressing (perfect if your killer needs a quick getaway- they can be on the other side of the planet before anyone suspects a thing) including confusion, weakness, paralysis and death. 
Arsenic is absorbed through the small intestine. The body mistakenly substitutes arsenic for phosphate. This causes havoc in 200 enzyme-based systems in the body, that are necessary for metabolism to function. 
In second place, we’ve listed Ethylene Glycol. Ethylene Glycol is sweet tasting, (although we would not recommend trying this theory for yourself- it is number 2 on a list of best poisons for a reason). It’s also used as antifreeze in cars which means it’s readily available for most people (well, how convenient). 
Your character’s body will seem fine for a few hours after ingesting this poison, when actually, their body will be breaking down the poison into other toxic substances. Eventually, your character will feel groggy, tired and fatigued, experience abdominal pain and then slip into a coma. 
A by-product that ethylene glycose breaks down into is glycolic acid. This causes a dangerous and fatal condition called metabolic acidosis. This is when someone’s blood becomes too acidic, preventing all chemical reactions that make up their metabolism from functioning as they should. It also creates calcium oxalate crystals in the kidneys, which literally tear up tissues in the kidney. Sounds delightful. 
And finally, cyanide takes first place. Cyanide is often said to be the most deadly poison. It’s incredibly fast acting- a big enough dose in a variety of forms can kill in hours and even minutes. It can be tested for in blood, but the patient would be long dead before lab results were able to come in. Cyanide is any chemical that has a carbon-nitrogen bond, and not all these chemicals are poisonous. In fact, cyanide can be found in foods like almonds and soy, and they are completely safe to consume. It’s also a by-product of metabolism in our human bodies! We exhale it in small amounts when we breathe. However, cyanide does come in deadly forms, including:
Hydrogen cyanide: pale blue or colourless liquid or gas
Sodium cyanide: a white powder
Potassium cyanide: also a white powder
Important note: Cyanide in all forms is said to smell like bitter almonds. 
Teachable Moment: You’re likely to find these poisonous substances in burning buildings/ fires.
Symptoms of cyanide poisoning include weakness and fatigue, difficulty breathing, nausea, seizures, cardiac arrest, headaches and confusion, fainting/ passing out and ultimately, death. A character’s symptoms will vary depending on the size of the dosage, the form of cyanide and the length of their exposure. 
Acute Cyanide Poisoning: Quite rare, and usually from accidental exposure. Symptoms will be sudden and severe, including cardiac arrest, seizures, fainting and breathing difficulties. 
Chronic Cyanide Poisoning: large amounts of exposure to hydrogen cyanide (specifically, 20-40 parts per million) of a long period of time. Symptoms gradually increase in severity over time. Primary symptoms include vertigo, headaches, flushed skin, drowsiness, nausea and vomiting. Secondary symptoms may include dilated pupils, weak and rapid pulse, difficulty breathing (shallow and slow) and clammy skin. Condition left untreated may lead to comatose states, blue lips and skin, irregular heart rate and death. 
Cyanide in small doses may not be deadly, as the body can get rid of the poison by sticking a sulphur ion onto it, converting the cyanide into a chemical called thiocyanate, which can exit the body through urination. However, in large doses, the body gets so overwhelmed it can’t turn all the cyanide into thiocyanate. This starts preventing cells from using oxygen and eventually, these cells begin to die off. Lack of oxygen means that the heart, respiratory system and central nervous system (the spinal cord and brain) can’t function properly.

What is ethylene glycol?
Ethylene glycol, a sweet-tasting, odorless liquid, is the active ingredient in most automotive antifreeze products. Ethylene glycol can also be found, in lower, less harmful, concentrations, in some windshield de-icing agents, hydraulic brake fluid, motor oils, solvents, paints, film processing solutions, wood stains, inks, printer cartridges, etc.
How do dogs get ethylene glycol poisoning?
Dogs may be attracted to ethylene glycol by its sweet taste. Many animals will voluntarily drink ethylene glycol if antifreeze is spilled or leaks onto garage floors or driveways. Ethylene glycol has a very narrow margin of safety – which means only a tiny amount can result in severe poisoning. As little as half a teaspoon per pound of a dog’s body weight can result in fatality.
What are the signs of ethylene glycol poisoning?
Ethylene glycol poisoning is divided into three stages.
Stage 1:  (within 30 minutes of ingestion): The signs include lethargy, vomiting, incoordination, excessive urination, excessive thirst, hypothermia (low body temperature), seizures, and coma.
Stage 2 - 12 to 24 hours after ingestion: Some of the signs seem to dramatically improve, luring pet owners into a false sense of security. However, during this stage, dogs become dehydrated, and develop an elevated breathing and heart rate.
Stage 3 - (36-72 hours after ingestion): At this stage, signs of severe kidney dysfunction, which is characterized by swollen, painful kidneys and the production of minimal to no urine, may occur. Progressive depression, lethargy, lack of appetite, vomiting, seizures, coma, and death may be seen.
It is critical that you bring your dog to a veterinary clinic if you know or even suspect that he has consumed ethylene glycol, or if he is exhibiting any of the early symptoms. Do not wait; time is of the essence and immediate treatment is essential! Dogs must be treated within 8-12 hours of ingesting antifreeze, as the antidote only has a narrow time period to work. Left untreated, the animal may die.

How do veterinarians confirm ethylene glycol poisoning?
The best way to confirm ethylene glycol poisoning is by measuring the blood concentration of ethylene glycol. A test to determine the blood levels can be done at some veterinary diagnostic laboratories or human hospitals. This testing method is very accurate, but not always available in the middle of the night. In addition, a test kit that can be used in the veterinary clinic is available to detect the amount of ethylene glycol present in the bloodstream. However, these types of tests may not be as accurate, and false positives can be seen (for instance, false positives may occur from products with similar chemical structures such as propylene glycol, glycerol, mannitol, isopropyl alcohol, sorbitol, etc.). Also, if this test kit is run too late, it may test falsely negative; in other words, since peak levels of ethylene glycol are detected in the first 1- 6 hours after ingestion of the toxin, it is important that this test kit be used early in the course of suspected poisonings. By as early as 24 hours after ingestion, insufficient ethylene glycol remains to allow detection on this blood test; however, the damage to your pet’s body from ethylene glycol has already occurred.
Are there other tests that can indicate ethylene glycol poisoning?
Ethylene glycol is converted by the liver into toxic byproducts that are damaging to the kidneys. This damage can be identified in a serum biochemistry profile by increases in the levels of creatinine and BUN (blood urea nitrogen) that are normally removed from the blood by the kidneys. However, these tests are not specific for ethylene glycol toxicity, and by the time these blood tests show evidence of kidney failure, the prognosis is grave to poor (since it is too late to treat with the antidote).  Acidosis (acidic blood) can also be detected through the biochemistry profile. A urinalysis may also confirm ethylene glycol poisoning and underlying kidney damage by the presence of dilute urine containing blood, protein, cellular casts (plugs of cells which have taken the shape of dying tubules in the kidneys), and calcium oxalate crystals (which are seen with ethylene glycol poisoning).  Lastly, a special black-light lamp (Wood’s lamp) can sometimes be used to examine the urine, muzzle, and paws of the patient to look for the presence of the warning dye which is added to automotive antifreeze.
When in doubt, if you suspect your dog has ingested ethylene glycol, immediate veterinary attention is imperative as the prognosis is very poor once clinical signs have developed. Again, because the antidote (fomepizole) is only effective if given within 8-12 hours in dogs, it is imperative that you see a veterinarian immediately. The Snake-Poo Doctor
In 1862, an Edinburgh-trained physician, John Hastings, published a slim volume about the treatment of tuberculosis and other diseases of the lungs. It advocates the use of substances that much of the profession would regard as unorthodox, as he acknowledges in his preface:
It has been suggested that the peculiar character of these agents may possibly prove a bar to their employment for medicinal purposes.
Hastings then anticipates another likely objection—that the “medicine” he recommends is difficult to get hold of. Fear not: He can recommend some suppliers.
It may be useful to add that these new agents may chiefly be procured from the Zoological Gardens of London, Edinburgh, Leeds, Paris, and other large towns. They may also be obtained from the dealers in reptiles, two of whom—Jamrach and Rice—reside in Ratcliffe-highway, whilst two or three others are to be found in Liverpool.
One might reasonably ask what sort of medicine can be purchased only at a zoo or pet shop. Hastings explains that he spent several years trying to find novel medicinal substances in nature, without success. Deciding that pharmacies were already “crowded with medicines derived from the vegetable and mineral world,” he resolved to investigate possible miracle cures in the animal kingdom.
It would be foreign to my purpose to detail here the various animals I put in requisition in the course of this investigation, or the animal products I examined during a prolonged inquiry. It is enough to state that I found in the excreta of reptiles agents of great medicinal value in numerous diseases where much help was needed.
Yes, Hastings’s miracle cure was reptile excrement. His book is titled An Inquiry Into the Medicinal Value of the Excreta of Reptiles. Which reptiles, you may be asking?
My earliest trials were made with the excreta of the boa constrictor, which I employed in the first instance dissolved simply in water. A gallon of water will not dissolve two grains, and yet, strange as the statement may appear, half a teaspoonful of this solution rubbed over the chest of a consumptive patient will give instantaneous relief to his breathing.

Not just the boa constrictor, either. Hastings provides a list of the species whose droppings he has investigated: nine types of snake (including African cobras, Australian vipers, and Indian river snakes), five varieties of lizard, and two tortoises. After his eureka moment, the intrepid physician was eager to introduce the new medicinal agents into clinical practice, and so he started to prescribe reptile excrement for his patients. Since his specialty was tuberculosis, most of the people who came to see Hastings would have been scared and desperate. In the 1860s, there was no cure for TB; although it was not universally fatal, around half of those who contracted the disease would die, most of them within two years.

Hastings includes a number of case reports. The first concerns “Mr. P.,” a 28-year-old musician who consulted him about a troublesome cough. Unexplained weight loss had eventually prompted the diagnosis of tuberculosis:
I prescribed the 200th part of a grain of the excreta of the monitor niloticus (warning lizard of the Nile) in a tablespoonful of water, to be taken three times a day, and directed an external application of the same solution to the diseased side. He was much better at the end of a week, and after a further week’s treatment I lost sight of him in consequence of his believing himself cured.
Another was “the Reverend Q.C.,” who sought treatment after he started to cough up blood, the classic presentation of tuberculosis. He was treated with two different types of lizard poo:
I applied to the walls of the left chest a lotion composed of the excreta of the boa constrictor of the strength of the 96th part of a grain to half an ounce of water. Under this treatment his amendment made rapid progress, until the month of May, when I prescribed for him a solution of the excreta of the monitor niloticus ... of the strength of the 200th part of a grain in two teaspoonfuls of water three times a day, and directed him to use the same mixture externally.
The clergyman’s symptoms improved dramatically, and a few weeks later, he was able to walk eight or 10 miles “with ease.” But my favorite case is that of “Miss E.,” described as a “public vocalist,” which contains this magnificent paragraph:
This case is interesting, from the fact that I gave her the excreta of every serpent I have yet examined, and they all, without exception, after a few days’ use, occasioned headache or sickness, with diarrhoea to such an extent that I was obliged to relinquish their use. From the excreta of the lizards she experienced no inconvenience. She is now taking the excreta of the [common chameleon] with great advantage, and is better than she has been at any one period during the last three years.
It’s all pretty ridiculous—a fact that the medical journals of the day did not fail to point out. An 1862 review in The British Medical Journal makes an excellent point about the nature of scientific evidence, suggesting that the “positive” results he recorded were nothing of the sort:
This doctor, unfortunately, gives his cases—his exempla to prove his thesis; and we must, indeed, announce them as such to be lamentable failures as supporters of his proposition. We verily believe, and we say it most conscientiously, that if Hastings had rubbed in one-two-hundredth of a grain of cheese-parings, and had administered one-two-hundredth of a grain of chaff, and had treated his patients in other respects the same as he doubtless treated them, he would have obtained equally satisfactory results.
If The British Medical Journal was uncomplimentary, The Lancet was positively scathing. Its reviewer pointed out that 20 years earlier, Hastings had published another book in which he claimed to be able to cure consumption—using a flammable hydrocarbon called naphtha. And 12 years after that, he had decided that the cure for consumption was “oxalic and fluoric acids” (both toxic in large doses); oh yes, and “the bisulphuret of carbon” (also toxic). Hastings had in fact discovered not one but five cures. The reviewer adds, with considerable sarcasm:
As regards that—to ordinary men—unmanageable malady, consumption, all our difficulties are now at an end. The public may fly to Hastings this time with the fullest confidence that the great specific is in his grasp at last.
But he saves the best till last:
What can the public be thinking about, we would ask, when it supports and patronizes such absurd doings? Will there still continue to be found persons ready to allow their sick friends to be washed with a lotion of serpents’ dung?
Hastings was so offended by this article that he attempted to sue the publisher of The Lancet for libel. The matter was heard before the Lord Chief Justice, Sir Alexander Cockburn, who dismissed the case, ruling:
It might be that he had discovered a remedy, and, if so, truth would prevail in the end; but it was not to be wondered at that the matter was treated rather sarcastically when the public were told that phthisis could be cured by the dung of snakes.

What Do Chicken Feed Labels Mean?
In Unscrambling the Egg (Carton) post, we covered why eggs are nutritious, how with big ranching production follow questionable and inhumane practices. We went over the difference between conventional/battery cage,  cage free, free range and pasture raised eggs. We covered what kind of eggs pack the most nutrients and least amount of inflammatory properties (because of how they are raised).
In this article, we’ll cover the basics of the kind of feeds that chickens consume, what is the best kind and how to find out from your rancher if they practice humanely and sustainably.
Vegetarian Fed
Chickens are omnivores. They were designed by nature to eat bugs, worms, and insects. Sometimes they will even consume mice and snakes. It is best if their diet is mainly from foraging their food eating all the above and cereal grasses. Foraging this way allows the chickens to have more omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin E, B12, A, folate than their caged and stressed out counterparts. Because of exposure to natural outdoor sunlight, they have higher level of vitamin D. Pastured eggs are higher in the anti-oxidants lutein and zeaxanthin which helps in prevention of macular degeneration.
If given grains, it should only be in supplemental form and amount.
Pasture raised chicken that is free to pasture and roam and consume its native food will have a 3:1 ratio of omega 6 and 3. Most people are consuming far too many omega-6 fats compared to omega-3 fats. 
The ideal ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fats is 1:1. And the typical Western diet is between 1:20 and 1:50 ratio. This kind of ratio causes inflammatory reactions in our bodies.
Most grains are loaded with omega-6 fats that disrupt the omega 3:6 ratio. Our diet is unbalanced in its ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 fatty acids because of the abundance of soy and corn in our diets today.
The Omega 3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3s are so good for you because of their anti-inflammatory properties, especially the omega-3s from animal sources.
The end of the fatty acid chain, opposite the acid end, is the “omega end.” The location of the first double bond from the omega end dictates whether a fatty acid is an omega-3, omega-6, omega-9 (oleic acid), or another member of the “omega family.”  Both omega-3s and omega-6s come in both short-and long-chain varieties.
“Essential fatty acids” (EFAs) is a term referring to the PUFAs your body needs but cannot produce (or convert from other fats), so they must be obtained from your diet.
According to Dr. Mercola, traditionally, only two fats were considered “essential”—ALA (an omega-3 fat) and LA (an omega-6 fat). However, we now know it’s the long-chain derivatives—arachidonic acid, DHA, and EPA—that your body needs the most.Omega-3 Fats.
Plant Based: The shorter-chain form of omega-3 is alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), the only omega-3 found in plants (except for some algae). Foods rich in ALA include flaxseed oil (53 percent), canola oil (11 percent), English walnuts (9 percent), and soybean oil (7 percent). ALA is considered essential because your body can’t make it, so you need it in your diet—or its long-chain derivatives.
Animal Based: The longer-chain forms of omega-3 are found mostly in animals and they are eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids (EPA and DHA) and are highly unsaturated, mainly found in fish, shellfish and krill. DHA is the primary structural component of your brain and retina, and EPA is its precursor.
Why Omega 3 (essential fatty acid) enhanced label may not mean much?
Your body can make some EPA and DHA from short-chain ALA, but does so inefficiently. Recent studies suggest less than one percent of ALA is converted, if you are consuming the typical Western diet. DHA is found in cod liver oil, fatty fish, and in smaller concentrations in the organs and fats of land animals.
Some ranchers understanding how this works, feed their chickens high quality fish meal and crab meal that come from clean sources. This fish source contains almost twice as much of Omega 3 fatty acids as organic “Omega 3” eggs that derive their Omega 3 fatty acids from flax seeds.

If certified organic by the USDA’s national organic program, the birds are fed an organic, all-vegetarian diet, free of antibiotics and pesticides and GMOs. Most likely their feed will include soy and/or corn.
Why not Corn and Soy?
Furthermore, if given supplements, I seek ranchers who avoid soy and corn for the following reasons:
Doing this contributes towards a healthier balance of Omega 6 and 3 ratios. This eliminates a major source of Omega 6 fatty acids that are contained in soy and corn.
Because corn and soy have been genetically modified for a couple of decades, it has had plenty of time to cross contaminate the organic kinds. Additionally, most soybeans are grown on farms that use toxic pesticides and herbicides. Some companies stopped using corn because they actually found alarmingly high amounts of GMOs and glyphosate in the corn that was included in the poultry feed.
Soy and corn being one of the most common food allergens, many people may be sensitive to consuming eggs where chickens were fed soy and corn.
Some undesirable products contained in soy are:
Goitrogens:Unfermented soy whether it’s organic or not, are substances that block the synthesis of thyroid hormones and interfere with iodine metabolism,thereby interfering with your thyroid function.
Phytoestrogens (isoflavones) is a plant compound resembling human estrogen which mimic and sometimes block the hormone estrogen. There is evidence it may disturb endocrine function, cause infertility, and promote breast cancer
Phytates (phytic acid) binds to metal ions, preventing the absorption of certain minerals, including calcium, magnesium, iton and zinc. It block the body’s uptake of minerals
Enzyme Inhibitors, which hinder protein digestion
“anti-nutrients” — Soy also contains other anti-nutritional factors such as saponins, soyatoxin, protease inhibitors, and oxalates. Some of these factors interfere with the enzymes you need to digest protein.
Haemaggluttin, a clot-promoting substance that causes your red blood cells to clump together inhibiting oxygen absobtion and distribution to your tissues.

Studies have shown unfermented soy may:
Increase the risk of breast cancer in women, brain damage in both men and women, and abnormalities in infants
Contribute to thyroid disorders, especially in women
Promote kidney stones
Weaken the immune system
Cause severe, potentially fatal food allergies
Impaired fertility
Danger during pregnancy and nursing
Some research is showing that the soy isoflavones from chickens fed diet concentrated with soy feed are transferred into the yolks of chicken eggs.
Professor M. Monica Giusti of The Ohio State University has done research on soy isoflavones appearing in commercial egg yolks. In 2009 one of her graduate students conducted some research on soy protein in egg yolks for a thesis, and Tropical Traditions supplied some of their Cocofeed for the study. Their research found: “Egg yolks of hens provided with the soy free diet, showed a rapid decrease of isoflavone concentration. From an initial isoflavone content of 52µg ± 0.73/100g it quickly diminished until at day 7, the concentration reached individual aglycone undetectable levels.”
High concentrations of estrogen mimicking hormones may end up in the yolks causing disruption in human fertility by upsetting the delicate hormonal balance. It may cause irregularities in sexual development.
Have your chicken and eat your eggs.
Here are great reasons to have your own backyard chickens.
It was the best decision we made when the kids were younger. Unfortunately our HOA is not tolerant and understanding of the value that it brings. I live in the suburbs and the community follows rules even if it doesn’t serve them anymore.
If your community is open minded and open hearted about it, I highly recommend it.

Pasture Raised
Meet Sustainable Standards (no pesticides, herbicides, GMOs)
Preferably Soy Free *
Preferably Corn Free *
*usually if it is certified organic, it will include corn and soy. Best option is to purchase soy and corn free eggs that are pasture raised. In this case usually the rancher has developed their own feed that is GMO free. Second best option is to Pasture Raised Organic eggs.
Some questions to ask your egg rancher:
Get to know the rancher. Visit the farm if possible.
Contact the rancher through website if you can’t visit the farm.
Make sure chickens have free access to sunshine
Chickens have ability to forage for bugs and cereal grasses
Rotated to new grass periodically
Supplemented diet with leftover greens
Applied natural bug repellents like Diatomaceous Earth and garlic in their water
Humanely treated without beak or toe clipping
“Certified Humane” label is helpful
Organic is important but not a sole criteria
Ask if rancher has developed their own feed that is GMO free.
“Animal Welfare Approved” is a good label
“No Antibiotics” label is important and regulated.
Sometimes organic is not enough
Marketing plows to watch for:
“Cage free”, “free range” and even “pasture raised” are mainly just buzz words and not regulated
Flax feed or plant based feed used to create ”high omega-3″ is not efficient since the EPA and DHA cannot adequately be converted by humans
Vegetarian Fed (chickens are not vegetarians)
Organic may include a large amount of corn and soy which is not ideal
Organic chickens can still be overcrowded and have inhumane conditions
Pictures of barns and farms on cartons are just marketing propaganda
“No hormones” is not helpful since hormones are not allowed to be used on chickens by the USDA
“No antibiotics” is a helpful label and is regulated by USDA
USDA Organic can be used if a product is only 95% organic
“Pesticide free” has no regulation
“Natural” also has no regulation

What Do Chicken Feed Labels Mean?
In Unscrambling the Egg (Carton) post, we covered why eggs are nutritious, how with big ranching production follow questionable and inhumane practices. We went over the difference between conventional/battery cage,  cage free, free range and pasture raised eggs. We covered what kind of eggs pack the most nutrients and least amount of inflammatory properties (because of how they are raised).
In this article, we’ll cover the basics of the kind of feeds that chickens consume, what is the best kind and how to find out from your rancher if they practice humanely and sustainably.
Vegetarian Fed
Chickens are omnivores. They were designed by nature to eat bugs, worms, and insects. Sometimes they will even consume mice and snakes. It is best if their diet is mainly from foraging their food eating all the above and cereal grasses. Foraging this way allows the chickens to have more omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin E, B12, A, folate than their caged and stressed out counterparts. Because of exposure to natural outdoor sunlight, they have higher level of vitamin D. Pastured eggs are higher in the anti-oxidants lutein and zeaxanthin which helps in prevention of macular degeneration.
If given grains, it should only be in supplemental form and amount.
Pasture raised chicken that is free to pasture and roam and consume its native food will have a 3:1 ratio of omega 6 and 3. Most people are consuming far too many omega-6 fats compared to omega-3 fats. 
The ideal ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fats is 1:1. And the typical Western diet is between 1:20 and 1:50 ratio. This kind of ratio causes inflammatory reactions in our bodies.
Most grains are loaded with omega-6 fats that disrupt the omega 3:6 ratio. Our diet is unbalanced in its ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 fatty acids because of the abundance of soy and corn in our diets today.
The Omega 3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3s are so good for you because of their anti-inflammatory properties, especially the omega-3s from animal sources.
The end of the fatty acid chain, opposite the acid end, is the “omega end.” The location of the first double bond from the omega end dictates whether a fatty acid is an omega-3, omega-6, omega-9 (oleic acid), or another member of the “omega family.”  Both omega-3s and omega-6s come in both short-and long-chain varieties.
“Essential fatty acids” (EFAs) is a term referring to the PUFAs your body needs but cannot produce (or convert from other fats), so they must be obtained from your diet.
According to Dr. Mercola, traditionally, only two fats were considered “essential”—ALA (an omega-3 fat) and LA (an omega-6 fat). However, we now know it’s the long-chain derivatives—arachidonic acid, DHA, and EPA—that your body needs the most.Omega-3 Fats.
Plant Based: The shorter-chain form of omega-3 is alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), the only omega-3 found in plants (except for some algae). Foods rich in ALA include flaxseed oil (53 percent), canola oil (11 percent), English walnuts (9 percent), and soybean oil (7 percent). ALA is considered essential because your body can’t make it, so you need it in your diet—or its long-chain derivatives.
Animal Based: The longer-chain forms of omega-3 are found mostly in animals and they are eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids (EPA and DHA) and are highly unsaturated, mainly found in fish, shellfish and krill. DHA is the primary structural component of your brain and retina, and EPA is its precursor.
Why Omega 3 (essential fatty acid) enhanced label may not mean much?
Your body can make some EPA and DHA from short-chain ALA, but does so inefficiently. Recent studies suggest less than one percent of ALA is converted, if you are consuming the typical Western diet. DHA is found in cod liver oil, fatty fish, and in smaller concentrations in the organs and fats of land animals.
Some ranchers understanding how this works, feed their chickens high quality fish meal and crab meal that come from clean sources. This fish source contains almost twice as much of Omega 3 fatty acids as organic “Omega 3” eggs that derive their Omega 3 fatty acids from flax seeds.

The kidneys are vital organs that remove the excess fluid, toxic wastes and even the excess minerals in your body. Indeed, your kidneys help balance your overall health. However, once you have kidney disease, your body cannot function well and in some cases, it can be fatal.

This would only mean you have to avoid eating foods that are salty and foods that are rich in uric acid.
Besides this, you should also drink lots of fluid especially water every day. This way, the kidney may function well since crystal deposits are dissolved easily with the aid of fluids. So live a healthy life to avoid this kind of disease.
