research: the consequences of fast fashion

POLLUTION: The impact of fast fashion on the plant is immense, with the demand for new and cheap clothing impacting the care for environmental factors. This includes the excessive use of cheap and toxic textile dyes, which makes the fashion industry one of the leading polluters of clean water globally. With polyester also being one of the most popular fabrics to make this clothing, the impact on the world is even larger, as it is derived from fossil fuels, contributes to global warming and sheds microfibres that contribute to the increasing levels of plastic in the oceans. 

TEXTILE WASTE: With fast fashion following current trends in the media, which often become unpopular quickly after, lots of the clothing purchased results in being disposed and creating even more textile waste. ‘ 360,000 tonnes of the textiles thrown away in the UK every year are clothes, with the average item of clothing only being worn 10 times before being discarded’.

EXPLOITATION OF WORKERS: Fast fashion also massively impacts garment workers, who are often forced to work in dangerous conditions for extremely low wages with no fundamental human rights.

HARMING ANIMALS: Toxic dyes and microfibres released from clothing during the washing process can be ingested by land and marine life. There is also speculation of the source of faux fur in fast fashion brands, with numerous scandals revealing cat and dog fur being passed as faux fur, as it is cheaper to source.
