While the “fast fashionfication” of lolita is a thing ( looking at you Amazon and aliexpress), this person is still wrong. At its heart, lolita fashion is and will always be a slow fashion. Unless you’re swimming in money and have impeccabl style from the jump, it will take awhile to build up a closet, to learn how you like your clothes to look on you and to develop a theme/core pieces. Also, I would classify these brands as small/medium businesses. They may pull in a lot of revenue, but in terms of profit and operating expenses, I don’t think they’re making that much. AP and BTSSB are most likely the highest earning in this niche fashion, but they are nowhere on the level of Shein or Forever 21.
EDIT: I just realized that the above didn’t mention any thinh about manufacturing practices of the brands. I’m not too sure and I will dive into it myself someday. But I definitely get the point of the person. I think mainstream feminisim has an intersectionality issue. While lolita is and can be a feminist fashion, I don’t think it can truly be upheld as one if you are leaving women out. Transwomen, disabled women, poor women especially from the Global South, tend to be left out of a lot of conversations.
