Vogue Fabrics By Mail Subscription
Usually Tuesdays I feature a book or fashion on film, and I decided my latest Vogue Fabrics swatch catalog is kind of like a book, so here goes. There are several swatch clubs out there, and this one is a good value as you can get a year for $30 and you get 6 issues, the 4 seasons and then two transition catalogs. This issue had over 40 swatches all coordinated with several other fabrics. You staple or glue them in yourself.
The benefits are many: you get to see and handle the fabrics and can even try washing them if you like. The garment sketches give you and idea of the size of the fabric print when worn while the background printings gives you the actual size. Since swatches are small, the background printings and sketches allow you to see what colors dominate. And you know if a print matches a solid. All essential to making wise choices. These fabrics are a good value, running towards cottons, rayons, blends of both, plus synthetics in this issue, ranging from $5.99 to $14.99. Plus patterns, often from independent designers, are featured in the sketches as well, and they range from party looks to work wear and play wear, also giving you an idea of what fabrics could serve what purpose.
As a subscriber you get first access including some lower prices, plus thread and lining matching services at a discount on prices. You can buy a trial issue of you like.

Big Blooms Print Dress: Picking the Fabric Side
In sewing, you can use either side of a fabric, but it is often clear that one side is considered the right side by the manufacturer. Sometime that is very clear on a print as one side shows a clear print and the other side has only faint marks and is mostly a solid. Other times, the differences is subtle.  If there is any identifying words, such as who made the fabric, the name of the print, etc or any sample color spots, they appear on the right side of the fabric. But that doesn’t make it the right side, that doesn’t make it the best side for your project.
Many prints are made in intense colors which catch the eye far more easily on the bolt, or on the screen. But they can be hard to live with. They can overwhelm the eye, or they can overwhelm the person. So I often choose the wrong side of prints for my projects.
For the Big Blooms Print Dress, I had originally thought I would use the official right side, but I began to feel it was not for me. The right side is satin which is hard to wear unless you have a lovely smooth complexion, and the colors of the print were so intense, I felt it was overwhelming. The print is really big and the satin side was extra bright. It felt like too much altogether.
So... I flipped it over and decided I liked the crepe-like finish on the back side and the slight decrease in the intensity, what we call the value of a color. Lower color value means less intense.
As you can see, the difference between the right and wrong side of the fabric is not great, but sometimes the subtle differences have a big impact, especially in a large print. Now, the only problem became remembering which was the right side for me as cut and sewed as my mind naturally assumes the brighter side is the right one

Understanding Woven Interlining
The textile industry is undergoing significant changes, with woven interlining emerging as a key area of innovation. This article delves into the latest trends and technological advancements that are transforming woven interlining, a crucial material that provides structure and stability to fabrics. Woven interlining is widely used in garments like jackets, shirts, and skirts to enhance fit, shape, and durability.
Traditionally, woven interlining fabrics have played an essential role in garment construction, offering reliable performance. However, with continuous advancements in technology, new developments are pushing the boundaries of what woven interlining can achieve, bringing exciting possibilities to the industry.
Before exploring these innovations, it's important to understand the basics of woven interlining. Woven interlining is a fabric layer inserted between the outer fabric and the lining of a garment. It is typically made from fibers such as cotton, polyester, or blends, each offering unique properties like stiffness, drape, and breathability.
As the industry evolves, the focus on enhancing these properties through cutting-edge technologies is growing. This has led to the creation of woven interlinings that not only improve garment aesthetics but also contribute to better comfort and durability. New developments include advanced fibers, innovative bonding techniques, and environmentally friendly materials that cater to the increasing demand for sustainable fashion.
This guide will equip you with the knowledge to take your garment construction skills to the next level and create clothes that look and feel truly professional.

Gift Cards for Dressmakers: Emma One Sock
The name is whimsical, but the fabrics are beautiful. This week I am offering up some of my favorite on-line fabric stores in case you are thinking of a dressmaker who needs a gift. Like many people, I would like to have a favorite local fabric store, but now such luck.
Emma One Sock has a wide range of fine fabrics which can be searched through using an advanced feature. In addition, there is a very helpful side panel for each fabric offering other fabrics for sale that harmonize in color. This eliminates the impossible problem of guessing if two fabrics online can work together. New arrivals are posted together, so you can see what has shown up in the last few weeks. Although a few items go on sale, many of the fabrics are available in small quantities, so it makes sense to buy if you see something that would be perfect for what you have in mind.
You see here a blue Dutch digital print on a viscose lycra knit, a dressy, sparkly  suiting in polyester, and a hound stooth all linen which would make for a great resort wear jacket.

You now you are sharing a nice fashion fabric source when people find the website and begin saying Ooooo! outloud. Loom & Star says it is “Providing fine natural fiber fabrics from India and Japan, including responsibly-sourced artisan-made textiles for your sustainable wardrobe.” This means cotton/linen blends like this lovely watercolor print--what a spring dress it would make--from Yui by Kokka, from Japan. And this cotton hand block print in pink and blue from India and this natural indigo block print which you could use two-sided.

Gifts for Dressmakers: Sawyerbrook Distinctive Fabric
Sawyerbrook fabrics offers a wide range of fine fabrics online as you see here, as well as a swatch club. Here you see a shot silk taffeta in golden orange for an evening look, a whimsical navy print in rayon which could become a nice spring dress, and a warm wool plaid for the winter and fall. They also have a warehouse, so if you live in the Boston area, call ahead before you go.
Distinctive Touch+ is their swatch club which you can join by the year or 6 months (only $20), or you may qualify for the club after a large purchase. They send swatches out before the public can buy them, so you get to handle them and first pick. As I have learned, matching colors is pretty hard without swatches in hand.

Gifts for the Dressmaker: Fabric Mart
Since the holiday season is upon is, you may be thinking of gifts for the dressmaker. It is not always easy to buy them fabric unless you actually can go shopping with them. Usually, a dressmaker or tailor has a specific garment they have imagined and they are willing to allow it to remain imaginary until they can find just the right fabric. But it is easy to get them a gift certificate, so see if they have a favorite local fabric store.
I thought I would feature some of the on-line places I go shopping this week. Fabric Mart offers discount fabric of all kinds from the ridiculous to the sublime. I have found lovely wools, silks, and cottons here, as well as utilitarian fabrics like Polarfleece. But you need to sort through fabrics that are discounted precisely because they are odd prints, less appealing fibers, what have you. Really nice fabrics can come and go quickly as they don’t always get a large stock of them.  So check New Arrivals, and use the categories and the filters to look for what you have in mind.
I give you here some things currently in stock:  whimsical Liberty of London print in cotton, a silk scarf panel in a mosaic print, and a boucle plaid in a wool blend. Something for everyone, you could say.
For more info, go here: https://www.fabricmartfabrics.com/
Gift card info is at the bottom of the page off to the right. They also have a swatch club with special offerings, but I haven’t tried this one.
