To Braid or Not to Braid....

Now this has been an ongoing debate between myself and Paris, our fashion editor and braid devotee, not to mention the braiding frenzy that seems to occur at the slightest suggestion of 'summer' or when a fashion editor decides that equestrian/kaftan/pretty summer dresses/ghetto fabulous looks are the 'in thing'.

In light of this I think it is a good time to establish a few braiding Dos and Don'ts. There is a very fine line in my view, and no doubt Paris and others disagree, between looking effortlessly stylish/angelic/beachy/chic with your braiding, and looking like you have the head of a strange infant on top of the body of an adult woman.

Oh and for this reason, pigtails are ALWAYS on the Don't list! So without further ado, I take a look at three examples of some of the more popular braids used on the runway and how best to interpret these looks at home!

RUNWAY LOOK #1 - THE DISTRESSED FISHTAIL

Okay this is one of the few looks that I think work straight from the runway. However, I will say, while I absolutely demand that if you are working a fishtail braid you 'tease it out' with your fingers, this look may make your summer style a little too "bohomeless".

The key to these messy braided looks is building your style with some sea salt spray and blow drying in to get that matte texture before you attempt the braid. Braiding your own hair can be tough so the Salt Spray will give some 'grit' to the hair to make your life so much easier! 

DO! A MESSY BRAID KEEPING THE LOOSENESS TO THE TOP AND THE FISHTAIL A BIT DECONSTRUCTED - IT IS SEXY AND UNDONE AND DOESN'T LOOK LIKE YOU TRIED TOO HARD...

GET ALL EXCITED WITH YOUR NEW SKILLS AND FISHTAIL PANELS, OR MAKE DESIGNS, OR DO THE BRAID TOO TIGHT THAT IT LOOKS MORE LIKE A (UNHEALTHY) POO AND LESS LIKE HAIR....

RUNWAY LOOK #2 - THE CLASSIC BRAID (OR INSIDE BRAID/THREE STRAND BRAID ETC)

DO! 

LOOSEN THE BRAID A LITTLE AND BRAID HAIR WHEN DRY TO AVOID A 'WET SET' LOOK. ALSO START THE BRAID A LITTLE FURTHER BACK FROM THE HAIR LINE SO IT BUILDS A NICE PROFILE SILHOUETTE

DON'T!! 

MAKE YOURSELF LOOK LIKE ONE OF THOSE HORSE MAD EQUESTRIAN TYPES OR WAY-TOO-YOUNG-FOR-YOU SCHOOL GIRL!!! (SEE LOOSE, MATTE, MESSY)

RUNWAY TREND #3 - CORNROWS

A GENERAL "DON'T"

BEWARE THIS LOOK, YES IT IS COOL.....BUT PROBABLY NOT ON YOU

LOOK DUE TO THE PROLIFERATION OF TRAGIC STREET VERSIONS OF THESE, USUALLY BRAIDED IN SECTIONS THAT WAY TO LARGE & ON GIRLS THAT DO NOT HAVE THE LOOK TO PULL THIS OFF, I JUST CAN'T BRING MYSELF TO RECOMMEND CORNROWING A PANEL, OR ALL, OF YOUR HAIR.

AS A GENERAL RULE - IF YOU WOULDN'T SHAVE THE AREA YOU ARE DOING THE BRAID THEN DON'T DO THIS. NO THEY ARE NOT DIFFERENT LOOKS. AND TO BE HONEST, A SMALL UNDERCUT LOOKS MUCH BETTER.

IF YOU GO FOR THIS MY TIPS ARE: TAKE VERY FINE SECTIONS AND DONT PULL SO TIGHT YOU ARE EXPOSING SCALP. DON'T LEAVE THEM IN FOR VERY LONG AS THE TENSION CAN CAUSE HAIR LOSS. TAKE A GOOD LOOK IN THE MIRROR AND THINK TO YOURSELF: DO I REALLY THINK I CAN PULL THIS OFF? THEN TAKE A PICTURE OF A MODEL WITH THIS LOOK AND LOOK AT YOURSELF AGAIN. IF THE ANSWER IS YES, HAVE A PRO DO IT FOR YOU. BUT YOU KNOW WHAT? A PONY TAIL IS PRETTY NICE TOO....
