Why Spiderman-India/Pavitr Prabhakar is one of the best examples of Indian representation I've seen in a long time
Mumbattan
Lets talk about Earth-50101, Mumbattan, Pavitr's home dimension. Mumbattan is displayed as a beautiful, colorful dimension with lots of traffic, lots of people, and lots of culture. When we see Gwen, Miles and Pav swinging through Mumbattan, we see people wearing saris, people driving scootys, Indian-style billboards and even temples in the surroundings. This is an extremely accurate depiction of large Indian cities.
Mumbattan on the left, Mumbai on the right
See how similar these look?
Now compare this to how Hollywood's Slumdog Millionaire movie depicts India.
Every single movie depicting India made by Hollywood portrays India as a country full of slums and dirty people. I have never seen Hollywood portray India as the beautiful, culture-filled country it is, and I have never seen one of the many beautiful temples, or the advanced cities represented in western media until now. Slumdog Millionaire is a fantastic movie, but India isn't only made up of slums.
Hollywood tends to romanticize struggle and when depicting India, makes it seem like a very depressing country. Yes, there are slums in India. Yes, there are people struggling in India. But that doesn't mean that India isn't beautiful. It doesn't mean India is behind. Mumbattan is the first depiction of India I've seen that I feel portrays the beauty and culture of India well. It is a fantastic representation.
2. Pavitr's personality
One of the most recent and most popular Indian representation series right now is the show, Never Have I Ever. In my opinion, this show is terrible. The main character, Devi Vishwakumar, is the stereotype of all stereotypes and doesn't accurately portray most Desi girls. She is rude, selfish, and extremely narcissistic. Her entire personality is being Indian and I find that extremely hard to watch. They make fun of her by addressing stereotypes like an excess of body hair, fashion, and even accents but instead of shutting down these stereotypes, they amplified them by making fun of them.
In western media, Indians are either portrayed as IT workers, scammers, grocery store owners, or nerdy, try-hard teenagers. Every show with an Indian teenager in it portrays them as cheap, unhygienic or unattractive which I, as an Indian, find extremely offensive.
Pavitr is portrayed as an optimistic Indian teenager who's smart and strong, without bragging about it, proud of being Indian without making it his whole personality and genuinely funny. He isn't portrayed as some skinny, nerdy guy with glasses. In fact, he's literally shown flexing his muscles, and performing well in class without going overboard about it. He's so full of culture, I can't even begin to explain it because I'll never stop. His suit, his mask, his webs, the way he moves, the way he fights, its all beautiful and I could watch for days on end without getting bored.
We were finally served an attractive, funny Indian character who isn't a walking stereotype, who loves and embraces his culture and just seems like an awesome guy to be around. Seeing him on screen made me feel so proud, of my religion and my culture. I hope Hollywood takes notes on this and continues providing the media with proper Indian representation and strong Indian role models for characters!
This article explains everything I said a little better, because I know my writing style can be confusing sometimes. It really goes into depth on how impactful it is on Indians to see this kind of representation for the first time in western media and how important this is.
He's so pretty <3 I'm so proud that I look like him
Might go even more in-depth eventually, I just really wanted to get this off my chest because I love him so much 😭

What happened to me in other universes?
I did not keep changing cities every four years. My home was Mumbai and my Kathak teacher marvelled over me as I grew up like she did when I was four.
I turned to ballet and performed as the Black Swan.
I never left art class. I finally took my pens and love for fashion. I did fashion designing and made my own line.
I never had to pick up a journal to vent so never got into writing poetry. The art of storytelling and poetry never knocked on my door.
Somewhere I became an actress and people loved me, idolized me and wanted to be me.
I did not meet him ever at all. I did not marry. My family remained small but enough for my heart. I did not search for home anymore.
What if I never got alternate universes?
Rooted to this reality, my sole present, past and future, I stare at every version of my self. I am sixteen and I wish I believed in myself a little more and spent more time dedicating poetry to the green hills.
I failed, yes. But I learnt how to deal with them. Life is still great. The sun shines warmly over me, and the moon holds a steady watch on cold lonely nights.
I obsessively watch ballet and spin on my toes, goofily falling to the floor, better than being dizzy and dazed in mind numbing turmoil and grief.
I don't have Kathak but I have two other dance styles to work over. All my teachers shaped me well, so I must prove their efforts right.
I need my journal like air. It is an extension of my consciousness. My sins and virtues, the good the bad, and the ugly are stored in those pages. They saw me grow.
I act while I dance. Stage lights are still good than being on camera, and dance can still be seen on large screens.
I am loved, though I may doubt that sometimes.
I met him. My fate thread is bound to him

Nykaa, Licious amp up quick commerce game as consumers demand instant gratification
Beauty retailer Nykaa has launched a 10-minute delivery pilot in Borivali, Mumbai, as the rapid growth of quick commerce starts disrupting multiple product categories, pushing vertical players to find ways to drastically speed up deliveries.
Direct-to-consumer meat brand Licious is piloting deliveries of ready-to-eat food items in certain locations in Gurgaon in about 15 minutes though its promise remains half-an-hour delivery, while top fashion platform Myntra is piloting a 4-hour delivery plan in four cities, including New Delhi and Bengaluru.
Delivering instant gratification is clearly the need of the hour.
Nykaa’s quick commerce testing comes at a time when beauty has emerged as one of the top grossing categories on rapid delivery platforms such as Blinkit, Zepto, Swiggy Instamart and BigBasket’s BB Now.
The Mumbai-based beauty retailer is expected to add more pin codes in Mumbai for 10-minute delivery.
It plans to undertake a major update on its platform to launch the service in more locations, people aware of the matter told ET.
It is likely to have a separate brand name as well, they said.
“Certain low-priced items such as kajal pens, foundations or daily-use skincare items are finding traction on quick commerce…and platforms such as Nykaa stand to lose,” a senior quick commerce executive told ET. “Same goes for other categories such as fashion, home decor…where more vertical platforms will do quick deliveries.”
The CEO of a top quick commerce player said beauty in select stock keeping units (SKUs) are seeing one of the fastest growth rates among the new-to-quick commerce segments.
Industry executives, however, said that while horizontal quick commerce platforms such as Blinkit and Zepto are likely to retain a stronghold in grocery deliveries, there is a play in quick commerce for vertical platforms with a wide range of SKUs and deep supply-side relationships.
An email sent to Nykaa didn’t elicit any response until press time Tuesday. Licious also did not comment.
The Bengaluru-headquartered online meat shop “has been conducting one-to-two-hour deliveries in major markets and often delivering ahead of the promised time,” a person aware of the matter said. “In Gurgaon, there is a new experiment to reduce the time even further based on the density of orders,” the person added.
These developments come at a time when large horizontal e-tailers are firming up their quick commerce play. While Flipkart has launched its 10-minute delivery service Minutes in Bengaluru, Delhi-NCR and Mumbai, Amazon is working on its Q-commerce offering, ET has reported earlier.
Last week, Swiggy started the 10-minute food delivery service Bolt, and it is understood that its rival Zomato is planning to bring back a 10-minute food delivery option for certain items, too, in partnership with top cafes and quick service restaurants.
ET had reported earlier that even logistics players such as Delhivery, Shadowfax, Ecom Express and Xpressbees are entering the quick commerce space.

Beauty and the quick beast
Nykaa initially plans to take about 5% of its total SKUs to the quick commerce offering as it sees certain kinds of products being ordered for quick delivery, people cited above said.
Multiple industry executives told ET that several brands — depending on the category — are increasingly moving to same-day delivery in top metros, underscoring the changing nature of delivery expectations from consumers.
“This is what’s leading to the dynamic changes. You don’t want to wait for a basic kajal for two days. These products are selling fast and consumers want them instantly,” a senior quick commerce executive said.
Nykaa has been offering same-day delivery for orders placed before 12 pm and next-day deliveries are done for orders after 12 pm in four metros.
“For Nykaa, they already see about 10–15% of orders in the top four metro cities being delivered the same day while 85–90% of the orders get delivered by the next day,” a person aware of the numbers said.
A recent note from JP Morgan said Nykaa’s premium portfolio is growing the fastest. “Nykaa sees no major impact from increasing proliferation of quick commerce on account of its skew towards more beauty products (80–85% mix) and tier-II+ cities (66% contribution). Nevertheless, Nykaa aims to enhance same day/next day order delivery rate to 65% of orders in top 12 cities and 60% of the orders from top 110 cities through higher efficiency of its supply chain network and expects no major investment in the initiative,” the report said.
In August, Varun Alagh, cofounder and CEO of direct-to-consumer beauty and personal care brand Mamaearth, had said during the company’s analyst call that quick commerce was the fastest growing sub-segment within its online commerce channel. He had pointed out that quick commerce sales — most of which were coming from top 10 cities — contribute over 10% of the company’s online revenue.
Beyond instant gratification
Quick commerce along with highly competitive new brands is speeding up the premiumisation trend in the country, CLSA said in a recent note.
“We agree that quick commerce will accelerate premiumisation, but note the competitive intensity in premium categories is even higher than in standard categories, especially as new entrants are likely to target higher gross margin categories. This is especially evident in categories such as premium personal care, beauty, premium foods and premium home care, where competitive intensity from new entrants is the highest,” the brokerage said in the note dated September 24.
During the ET Startup Awards 2024 ceremony held on October 5, a panel discussion chaired by Infosys chairman Nandan Nilekani threw light on the rise of instant gratification in Indian consumption.
During the course of the discussion, Zepto cofounder and CEO Aadit Palicha said the rise of quick commerce was on account of factors beyond just instant gratification.
“When you look at why quick commerce is working in India, it’s largely because we’ve been able to cater to ‘small ticket multiple times a week’ use case that is unique to Indian commerce,” Palicha said. “If you go to the West, for example, it’s precisely the opposite — it (grocery shopping) is large baskets one or two times a month. The average frequency of transactions in India on grocery household essentials is 2.2 times a week… In the US it’s 2.4 times a month.

Can you believe that we thought the MS press tour would be MA showing up in different Dior outfits but and it's just them in the MS shirts every single day.
Strategical I can understand why they did it (reaching out to regular folk(especially to an older audience), promo more adapted to the locals in smaller provinces, more focus on the actors and the movie vs fashion, economical in the wardrobe perspective) but I am not sure why they couldn't just style them in the shirts differently in each stop or just let the actors wear their own clothes but that are from a budget friendly price point if they don't want to appear too flashy...like their pictures from each event are so boring and you can't differentiate one event to the next which likely results in less press for them as for the press they all look like the same day making the picture basically worthless after the first day.
putting these together 💖
A couple of things I randomly found out (more like realized) in the past couple of weeks:
Bangkok has a population of 10.7M people (for reference, New York which is the densest city by population in the US has 8.5M people. Of major Asian countries, Shanghai is 26M, Mumbai is 20.6M, Manila is 13.4M, Tokyo is 14M, Seoul is 9.8M, and HCMC is 9M people.
Thailand has a population of 71.6M people, which means the city of Bangkok itself makes up 15% of the country's population. The only city similar on the list is SK with 51.7M, or 16% of the country's population. (I do want to note Seoul is much smaller in surface area than Bangkok, which does mean Seoul is also denser)
SK is approximately 100,032sqkm. Thailand is, however, 513,120sqkm. Both of the cities are marginal in size compared to their countries' total surface area, so looking at non capital city surface area, BOC has to promote in 5x large of a space compared to if a Korean company were to do the same with their film.
I mean BOC going out and doing this kind of promo in these less urban regions is losing money for them, even if it's in terms of cost-benefit analysis of time itself. But I think overall the project is a labor of love for Mile and Apo, especially. And as Apo said, the way to earn money as an actor is not through working as an actor, but sponsorships and promoting brands.
Of course they don't want it to be a total sunken cost and for people to see this movie, but they made this movie for the pride of Thailand, not just for people living in Bangkok. I think getting to see glamorous movie stars you can see on the big screen in your town is enough, they don't need to be wearing weird, inaccessible Dior clothing. I guess maybe they just feel it would be more fair if all these cities got the same experience. Even if it's boring for us, it's probably each town's local newspaper reporting on their arrival and promotion as a pretty big deal to the region. I even saw some Thai fans organizing to try to sponsor tickets for helping get more locals into these shows because they recognize that 220 thb (~$6), the cost of a movie ticket, might be a lot for some of these families.
And for their inter fans, it's also education about these other cities in Thailand and bringing in business to local store owners from local fans who are following them on their journey.
I don't want to be too down about it, and it doesn't bother me really they aren't dressing differently between different stops... we've gotten so many amazing outfits from their Man Suang press tour already. Just like it doesn't really bother me that them doing this kind of promo isn't going to generate a huge amount of revenue for them. Some things money can't buy, and pride is one of them.
#the other would be values#[redacted] can't relate#man suang promo#they tried to buy my pride#but that just ain't up for sale
