word count: ~2K
warnings: pg-13 sexual content, fem!r, illusionist!r, magician!sirius, possessive!sirius, original character (for the plot), blindfold (non-sexual), groping, foreplay
note: i named the oc in this after leon kennedy because i had just watched that video of ethel cain talking abt him so it was the freshest name in my mind. also psa i am not a swiftie i just listen to her music :0
The audience is the third member of every scene. That’s any performer’s rule of thumb. What the watcher feels, where they’ve been, who they are—all of it precedes any preparation you do for a performance, no matter how important it feels.
You like to attribute the feeling to destruction. The crowd takes hard work and taints it with their emotions, taunting you. It’s unbearable.
When you shared that notion with Sirius—loitering backstage before a show—he snickered about it for days on end.
Sirius, in true chaotic fashion, loves the unpredictability of an audience. He’s always been partial to voyeurs—in and out of professional settings—and he likes to be surprised.
What’s worse is that he likes to surprise you.
“Ladies and Gents,” Sirius projects out into the darkness. The double-tiered theater is one of the bigger venues you’ve performed at, seating just shy of three hundred people.
Sirius is perfectly at ease, strolling leisurely across the stage in a tuxedo, the silver image of a charming magician.
“For our next feat, my illusionist and I will need a volunteer.”
Your head snaps toward Sirius—stage smile falling ever so slightly. He’s already looking your way, smug and colored with mischief. He’s improvising.
Reinstating your smile to its full magnitude, you turn it back to the dark theater, watching hands shoot up from every seat. In your peripheral, Sirius retreats upstage, signaling for you to make your selection.
You play up a show of indecisiveness, tapping a manicured nail to your chin. “Hmm. Well, we need someone strong. We wouldn’t want to send anybody to the hospital tonight.”
A few hands drop then, slimming your options down a bit. Good. Eyeing the rows of people, you suddenly find an opportunity to get Sirius back.
“I think I like our friend here in the front,” you drawl, batting your lashes and pointing delicately. “In the suit.”
The man in question raises his brows, looking to his left and right. He’s young and decently handsome, nothing like Sirius, but just good-looking enough to poke the bear. His hand hadn’t been raised, but if Sirius won’t play by the rules then neither will you.
You hum sensually, beckoning him up with a curled finger, which he follows. You’ve been told you have a presence like a viper onstage, like you’re constantly poised for a fatal strike, and you consider that this might motivate people to obey you.
As the well-dressed man steps gingerly off of the top step, you meet him with a hand around his tie, coaxing him further under the intense lights; Sirius does this often when he calls pretty girls onstage, maneuvering them around by the smalls of their backs just to piss you off. Some nights the crowd laughs at their flushed cheeks, other nights they swoon. The group tonight is dead silent, pinned under a mountain of anticipation.
You envy them, considering you know no more about what will happen next than they do. They get to be silent, but for you, the show must go on.
Arriving center stage, you meet Sirius with an unhappy sidelong glance. Your victim sways awkwardly where you’ve parked him.
“Don’t worry, handsome.” You pat his lapel. “Sirius will tell you what we need from you.”
The man laughs nervously, provoking a scatter of teasing giggles from the audience.
You and Sirius trade sides then, circling behind the man like hungry wolves. As he passes you, Sirius slips a silky belt of fabric into your hand, a challenging eyebrow raised.
“Right, sir. What’s your name?”
“Er, Leon,” says the volunteer, his voice shy.
“Leon, everybody!” Sirius booms, throwing his and Leon’s arms open for applause. The crowd whistles their approval. Leon’s face blooms red like the flower in Sirius’ coat pocket, and worse when you step into his space with the blindfold.
“Alright, alright.” Sirius settles the crowd. “My darling assistant has something for you, Leon.”
Quirking a brow, you take your supposed queue, lifting the cloth to his eye level.
“Don’t be scared,” you murmur, just loud enough so that only the three of you on stage can hear. Leon releases a tense breath, holding your gaze.
Watching from beside you, Sirius’ lips pull into a petty smirk.
“Darling, don’t tease him. Let him put the blindfold on you.”
He says it like it’s obvious, as if there’s a clear protocol for the trick that he’s pulling from thin air. The audience is easily fooled by his cool confidence, but your cheeks still flush in embarrassment under your stage makeup.
Leon deflates—counting his blessings, you’re sure. Being unexpectedly blinded in a dark room full of people isn’t exactly calming. Reluctantly, you pile the dark fabric into his palm and turn around, accepting your twisted fate.
“Make sure it’s nice and tight, Leo,” Sirius orders as your eyes are covered. “We can’t have her cheating.”
You huff at that. There’s an entire choreographed illusion being discarded purely for Sirius’ amusement—if anyone’s cheating, it’s him.
Once the blindfold is securely fastened over your eyes, Sirius sets out to assemble the rest of the trick, which includes leading Leon upstage.
“We’ll leave our illusionist up here for a moment,” announces Sirius before he goes. “She’s pretty enough to keep you all entertained.”
Something about his words lights a match in your belly, made all the worse by your impaired vision. Without a means of looking back at the snickering audience, you’re little more than a statue to be gaped at.
Luckily, Sirius is a jealous man, so he doesn’t leave you squirming under their watchful eyes for long. As he takes your waist in a theatrical lead, he whispers silkily into your ear.
“You really know how to pick ‘em, eh?” A shiver creeps down your spine, and you almost trip in your heels. Sirius’ hot breath oozes over you, the hair on the back of your neck picking up. “Let’s hope your aim is as good without your eyes.”
As you ponder whatever that might mean, Sirius disappears, and then returns moments later. Whatever he brings back has the crowd gasping, scandalized or awestruck. It’s all you can do to hope it’s not a live animal.
“Folks,” he begins, and by the sound of it he’s center stage again, keeping the show rolling. “Our next act needs no introduction.”
Sirius comes to you, pressing something cool and heavy into your hands. It only takes you a few seconds to identify it as a bow, and you can’t tamp down your resulting outburst.
“Are you mental?” you hiss at Sirius as he folds an arrow into your free hand. He laughs, mocking your panic. Big hands grip your waist, manhandling you into a proper position, and you're nearly beyond performing, ready to shout at the delighted audience that this is really very scary and they should go home immediately.
Sirius leans in, pressing his chest close to your back, his upstage hand kneading secretly at your hip.
“Leon, are you ready over there?”
Far away, you hear Leon choke nervously. “Er, as I’ll ever be.”
The crowd chitters.
“Don’t tell me you’re scared?” The smile is audible in Sirius’ voice. He’s getting a kick out of this.
“Of taking an arrow to the head? Yeah.”
Sirius grips your waist tight, feeling over the fabric of your costume bodice, but his voice is opposingly saccharine.
“My girl’s got great aim. She’d never hit you anywhere fatal.”
As the crowd guffaws at Sirius’ dark humor, you bite your lip, figuring there’s no more preamble to delay the inevitable. You notch the arrow into the bowstring and draw.
Barely breathing, you don’t realize that Sirius has left your side until his words register from somewhere else, between you and Leon. You try to listen to what he’s saying, but it’s near impossible to hear over the blood pulsing in your ears.
An arrow-in-the-apple trick isn’t beyond your and Sirius’ skill level, but it is a skill. One that you only know how to do with Sirius, and you’re frantically trying to correct your posture to the height difference Leon has.
“Can I get a countdown from the audience?”
The audience counts ten aching seconds in unison, dread pooling in your gut as they inch closer to one.
By the time they reach the final number you’re shaking, but you loose the arrow without a second thought. It whizzes by your clothed eyes, and a second later thumps into something hollow.
You can hardly breathe, hardly think, putting all your energy into keeping a grip on the hefty bow in your hands.
In the theater, an eruption of cheers commences, and you untie the blindfold as artfully as you can with shaking fingers. The stage lights hit your eyes harshly, leaving the audience a cacophonous void, but you’re more invested in the fate of Leon.
Squinting at the other side of the stage, you don’t find Leon at all, but Sirius standing perfectly still under an arrow-pierced apple. It barely cleared his head.
As your eyes adjust, you find Leon safe and sound in his front row seat, smiling guiltily up at you.
+
“I could have killed him.”
The dressing room vanity digs into your ass as Sirius presses you up against it, licking down your neck.
“So?” he replies flippantly, fingering the top of your stockings.
“So?” you repeat, incredulous.
“Yeah, so what? Who cares?”
You grind your teeth to halt your immediate response. He’s baiting you, tricking you into some kind of admission that could feed his jealous instincts.
“I’m not super fond of becoming Mistress Manslaughter,” you joke dryly.
Sirius scoffs into your throat, sucking harshly at a spot below your ear.
“Yeah, right. Like I’d let you do that trick with anyone but me.” He palms your tits to punctuate his statement.
You moan, holding each end of his undone bow tie like a lifeline. His sleek black hair smells ever so slightly of apple, citrusy and sweet.
“Why bring him up at all, then?” you ask. “Why bother?”
Sirius lifts his head, panting.
“Cause, babe. I love a twist ending.” He winks garishly, prompting an eye roll from you. You prepare to return his attitude, but Sirius interrupts you. “I’m through talking about—” a slovenly kiss to your jaw,“—what’s-his-face.”
“Leon.”
Sirius bumps you up onto the vanity surface, pushing his hands up your skirt. His mouth and neck are covered in your red lipstick, his eyes dilated.
“How about you stop saying his name, and start saying mine?”
Lifting an eyebrow, you gently push at Sirius’ shoulders. His breath catches—so subtly you almost miss it, but nevertheless—as he kneels willingly before you.
“How about you give me a reason, and I’ll think about it,” you retort.
Achingly slow, Sirius starts to peel the fabric of your underwear off of your hips. You rest back onto the mirror, slotting a hand into his tousled hair. His mouth bites teasingly at your stockings where his fingers just were, but you know they’ll stay on. He likes them too much to remove them.
As your underwear hits the floor, Sirius slides you to the edge of the table, pinning you under his heated gaze.
“I think I can give you more than one.”

After watching Act II of NiER: Reincarnation, I can't stop thinking of an AU where instead of Yuzuki and Hina, it's Vivian and @spiritpyro's Hayate who were both transported from their universes (Chiba, Japan) to the Cage. Of course, Vivian would be tasked with fixing the sun while Hayate would be tasked with fixing the moon, but due to the fact their timeline follows the private verse (aka Vivian losing her memories before becoming neighbours with Hayate) and their revolving theme is 'not quite lovers, yet not quite friends', I feel like the companions assigned to them would be different while the characters unlocked would still remain the same (meaning they will all get to witness Yudil, Sarafa, Saryu, Marie, Priyet, and Yurie's memories).
Whereas Hina had Papa as her guide, I headcanon Vivian's companion would be called 'Gent' and he'll have this particular design, which I badly edited to have a dapper feel to it. As her guide, he would take on the role of what an ideal boyfriend and perfect gentleman should be like (and because Carrier had canonically once ranted about his wife being a nag/having elderly parents that need care, I can see Gent going as far as to claim he works as a rental boyfriend on the side), so I can see him calling her 'darling' and 'Ms. Vivian'. I also have this idea he'll hold onto Jude (the crocheted butterfly she always carries with her) for Vivian every time she needs to enter a Dark Scarecrow, which are these black statues in NiER: Reincarnation that blocks the player's path and contains memories of characters' backstories. Furthermore, Gent would have taken her hand with one of his weird black arms and lifted it to where his mouth should be after he first introduces himself to Vivian, but considering he looks like a ghostly apparition, she finds it hard to really take him or his suave remarks all that seriously most of the time.
As for Hayate, his companion wouldn't be Mama/Babe the same it way had been with Yuzuki, but a pink one called 'Lady' that I headcanon would have this appearance. As his guide, she's supposed to take on the role of what a kind, caring girlfriend should be like and similarly to Gent, would mention to Hayate she works as a rental girlfriend on the side. While Gent uses 'darling' with Vivian, however, Lady prefers 'honey' as her go to term of endearment for Hayate. She'll also offer him massages/pats on the head and remind him to not push himself too much and that it's fine to take breaks if he's tired from traversing the Cage.
Anyways, in true Yoko Taro fashion, Vivian would end up seeing a memory of her huge falling out with Hayate that led to her eventual suicide attempt at some point, which would understandably break her all over again... yet thanks to Gent calming her down/preventing her from ripping apart Jude, she would somehow have enough strength to keep going. Then somewhere along the way, it's later revealed from her point of view that Hayate one day started dating someone else (that's definitely not Hideaki), and to make matters worse, this person was a scumbag. Not only did they secretly record them having sex without his permission just to taunt her and rub further salt in her wound, they also hurled ableist slurs at Vivian whenever Hayate wasn't around, to the point where months later, she ended up snapping and killing them instead of asking Hayate to just dump them.
And Hayate, upon not knowing this, would angrily lash out at Vivian, which resulted in him accidentally killing her before learning what had truly happened... yet because he still cared about her, knowing he was responsible for her death would cause him great anguish at the same time. Regardless, it would seem she killed his lover out of jealousy from his point of view, which is meant to make the player sympathize more with Hayate if they're playing as him and not Vivian. Anyways, they both became isekai-ed to the Cage afterwards (or in Vivian's case, reincarnated within the Cage), where they were each promised a wish by Gent/Lady if they ended up acquiring the necessary Fragments to fix the broken Sun and Moon.
Honestly, though, I feel like Vivian would wish she had never fallen in love with Hayate due to all the suffering he caused her while Hayate would wish he had never been an asshole to her; however, compared to Vivian, who would be angry enough at him to throw hands and yell at him that he pretty much ruined her life, I feel like Hayate would just want to talk/de-escalate things.
...In fact, he'd pretty much be the only one who would actually not want to to kill Vivian to fulfill his wish, so the options would be A) Vivian should get her revenge, B) Vivian and Hayate shouldn't fight, or C) Vivian and Hayate should talk things out (which can only be unlocked after completing one of the prior endings). Unlike with Yuzuki and Hina, though, there does exist a reality where they're happy together, so instead of staying in the Cage, I could see them having an actual heart to heart during Ending B and wish that in another life, they could have stayed true to themselves back then... causing them to be transported to another reality, where they became girlfriend/boyfriend.
Meanwhile, in Ending C, Vivian would acknowledge she's still in love with Hayate but would no longer desire a romantic relationship with him due to trauma... and since wishing for a different reality would be the same as running away from the sins they committed, they decide to live out the rest of their lives in the Cage together. Honestly, I wanna say that since Hayate is immortal, the only reason Vivian would be able to kill him in Ending A is because she has the power of the Sol Fragments on her side.
But anyways, I definitely think one of Vivian's stories would revolve around her ex-girlfriend, Esmé, but I'll never add a proper NiER: Reincarnation AU to her verses page (despite having self-indulgently designed Companions for her and Hayate) because I doubt people have actually played the gacha let alone heard of it (especially after it was announced the game will be ending it's service) and as far as I could tell, nobody on tumblr roleplays characters from NiER: Reincarnation... so it shall forever remain a brainrot AU of mine.
#║▌ ⧼ ⸢ ʚɞ ⸣︳h̲e̲a̲d̲c̲a̲n̲o̲n̲s̲. ⧽ ― LET’S PRETEND I AM A FICTIONAL CHARACTER.#⸾ ❖︎ ⸾ ( QUEUED ) ⤹ •• 𝕗𝕠𝕣 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕝𝕚𝕓𝕣𝕒𝕣𝕪.#[ tbh i could tag this as 'nier reincarnation spoilers' but now that the game has officially ended it's service and most of the story ]#[ is already uploaded on youtube i don't think that's necessary anymore?? but if you still want to experience the story for yourself ]#[ then don't click the read more i guess! ]#[ anyways i have no idea if this post is actually coherent to jason or not but on the off chance i didn't jot down every single detail ]#[ I WOULD PROB GO INSANE so unfortunately he has the misfortune of reading my manic ramblings/brainrot ]#[ and to everyone else i'm sorry i can only hyperfixate over obscure series instead of mainstream series that has an actual rpc on tumblr ]#[ so if you ended up reading this anyways... know that you're a real trooper and i appreciate you lots ]

Habit Rouge (Guerlain)
"Smell this." I hold my wrist under my husband's nose.
He inhales deeply, then shrugs. "It's okay."
"Just okay?"
Cheerfully: "Mm-hm."
This scene occurs daily at my house, with very few deviations from script. I would say that ninety percent of the perfumes that have undergone this test rated an "okay". Some receive a "Weird", others a furrowed brow and a muttered, "Where is it?" Occasionally I get a resolute "No!" balanced on the next wearing by an enthusiastic thumbs-up or - best of all - a blissful nuzzling at the nape of my neck.
Little does the man know, this time I'm not asking on my own behalf.
In the years that we have been together, my husband has never worn any kind of fragrance on purpose. He has built a personal regimen involving Ivory Soap, Gold Bond Powder, Nivea Sensitive shaving cream, and "plain" therapeutic moisturizer-- all of which, in concert with his personal scent, happen to smell fantastic. But his sensitive skin limits the amount of experimentation he's willing to do with new or unfamiliar products. He has reacted with mild interest to the masculines in my collection, particularly Bertrand Duchaufour's Timbuktu, yet has never made a single move toward swiping it for himself. And the idea of an "aftershave" other than plain cold water makes him shake his head.
I would never presume to choose a fragrance for him. But if my husband were ever to choose Guerlain's Habit Rouge for daily wear, I'd be the one doing the nuzzling.
Looking back over the evolution of men's fragrances, one sees certain categories -- fougères, leathers, woods, and aquatics -- lording it over all. Habit Rouge belongs to none of these. It's classified as an woody oriental, but is no less masculine for its lack of chauvinism. Bear in mind that in 1965, when Jacques Guerlain formulated HR, the definition of masculinity itself was in flux. Beginning with the Mod style movement of the early 60's, men had begun to struggle free from the previous decade's buttoned-down definition of manhood and to explore (gingerly, of course) a more "feminine" interest in fashion, art, and self-expression.
By 1966, lavishly pattered flowing shirts paired with hip-hugging flared trousers and Cuban heels would be considered the cutting edge of male fashion in psychedelic London. An outre "new Edwardian" aesthetic waited in the wings, all velvet and brocade-- to this cultural style revolution, Habit Rouge acted as the huntsman's trumpet call.
It kicks off with a fantastic top note, unashamedly floral yet not at all delicate, a hearty handshake of a scent like neat camelia oil on good leather. It then rapidly kaleidoscopes through a hundred sunset shades of citrus, with raspy wood notes gently shouldering their way to the fore as if to reassure you of HR's core masculinity. No need to overstate the obvious here, as so many overtly hairy-chested fragrances do at a shout. HR is perfectly comfortable with its identity; its manliness goes without saying and can survive a bit of dandifying.
It ends where very few masculine fragrances have ever dared to end-- in a faint, talcum-powder shimmer laced through with orange blossoms. This explains why so many men have lost their bottles of HR to wives and girlfriends-- but don't draw the wrong conclusions, gents. It's not that HR is for ladies. It's that ladies love HR, no matter who's wearing it. Why not you? (Still not convinced? Be advised that Sean Connery swore by Habit Rouge for years. That's right-- 007 HIMSELF wore it, so calm down, big boy.)
"Smell this." I hold my Habit Rouge-sprayed wrist under my husband's nose.
He inhales deeply, then shrugs. "It's okay," he says. Then he takes my wrist in his hand and smells again.
"Hm," he says.
Hm, indeed.
Scent Elements: Bergamot, lemon, rosewood, basil, sandalwood, carnation, patchouli, cedar, cinnamon, vanilla, amber, moss, benzoin, labdanum, olibanum

Meet Shin Ryeong | Vogue Korea
Q: First off, would you introduce yourself?
It would be my pleasure. My name is Shin Ryeong, but I prefer to be called Ryeong or Ryeongu. I was born on Spring, 1st 2004, guess how old I am by this year! Seoul is my birth town. I am the second child in the family, after my brother Ryu, which everyone's probably aware of already. My MBTI is ESFP, the last time I checked, and yes, I'm an extrovert person. I hope you saw it coming! love animals, cats especially, and that always got me a dead stare from my friends when I mimicked the sound of it every time. I stand 5’10” ft, thanks to my undying love for milk perhaps. And.. I think that’s it for now.
Q: How cute! Bet there’s many out there who’s dying to hear your cat’s impression. Well, let’s save that for later. Tell me, what are you up to these days?
Nothing much, I guess? Still studying diligently, doing this and that, almost everything if I have time to spare. Well, if I could tell you one thing, yesterday I got a letter of acceptance from Segyeong University. Big news, I’m starting college very soon!
Q: Oh my God, congratulations, Ryeong-ssi! Let me guess, the major is closely connected to business?
You got me! To be exact, I applied to College of Business Administration, the same major as well.
Q: I see someone’s eager to take on his father position in the future?
Eiy, it’s not like that. I still have so much to learn before stepping on such a high position. Beside, I want to focus on the present and enjoying my youth days. I feel like college could be a whole new starting point to look for more extraordinary things in life, am I right?
Q: Many said so and I believe that as well. Talking about youth and college, any plan on getting a lover? People are curious to know!
God, you put me in a tough situation! But, well, if anything, if there’s someone who catches my attention.. I can’t say there’s no possibility.
Q: All I can say is good luck to whoever dreamed of being your lover. Oh, maybe I can help them a bit, what are you interest nowadays, Ryeong-ssi?
There are so many things that I’m interested in right now, but some that I can mention are movies, dance, cooking, and fashion. Recently, I learned how to cook a top-notch ramyeon recipe by myself, even my friends keep on asking me for details, but I don’t disclose it to anyone. It’s fun to mess with them! I have also been trying for more variety of fashion styles, which my Mom encouraged me to do so, and started taking me to fashion show events. It amuses me though, and I acquire a lot of knowledge from Mom. And I still frequently watch movies from time to time, it is my number one hobby after all.
Q: Keep it in your memory, ladies and gents! Who knows maybe Ryeong-ssi would also be interested in you. Lastly, before we end this session, may I know about your dream?
Wow, that’s an intriguing question for a closing. For me, dreams are sacred. I used to have a lot of dreams back when I was still a kid who knew nothing. Then, growing up, I realized that not every dream may come true, no matter if you pursue it through hard work, or even worse by doing nothing. Some dreams are meant to stay as dreams. Now, though, I dream only one thing, to help people around me, people in need, people who have nothing. Maybe after that, I can dream of more.

Went out Contra dancing with a friend on nye. I still don't pass as anything close to a dude so it brought out a lot of social dysphoria. I was getting asked to dance by mostly men who expected me to dance the woman's part. I'm not a man either, but I typically prefer masculine roles. To be fair, I suppose I didn't ask a lot of people to dance with me so it might be my fault.
The trans-feminine friend I was with had a much better time on that front. I think I've mused about this before but its much easier to use fashion to code yourself as a woman since mens clothing restrictions are more severe (women can wear masculine clothing but men won't wear feminine clothing).
When dancing with my friend, it mattered much less to me what role I took. We switched back and forth a few times, although we both tend to be better at leading. However I knew she saw me the way I wanted to be seen so it didn't bother me, and I'm guessing it was the same for her. I don't think she led anyone else.
when i had been dancing there before the experience was much less gendered (as in they weren't saying ladies and gents, they were saying left and right) so I was kind of surprised. So much really depends on the caller I guess.

Understanding Social Anxiety: Personal Experiences and How I Handled It
Have you ever found yourself standing awkwardly in a crowd or corner, your hands trembling, your legs unsteady, hoping someone you know will come forth as you gaze to your left and right, unsure of what to do? Most of us do, I bet!
One of today's mental health problems is social anxiety, a bad sensation brought on by bad experiences. A person with social anxiety may feel overwhelmed when around a lot of people, meeting new people, or speaking in public.
Whenever I walk alone, I always feel uncomfortable and anxious because I think there must be something wrong with me that make people stare at me. For instance, whenever I wear a skirt, I assume that my shorts are showing, and whenever I walk alone while having my period, I imagine that there is blood on my clothing. When I'm in a crowd, I always adjust my posture because I'm mindful of how I appear. I also worry constantly about my skin, not because I'm ashamed of it, but because I have dry and sensitive skin, and sometimes the symptoms are obvious, making me self-conscious.
All of them were brought on by my social anxiety; I fear being scrutinized and capturing everyone's attention.
I later came to the realization that my social anxiety was not brought on by the individuals around me; rather, it was I, ME.
It was I who thought I had everyone's attention, who judged my own judgments, which generated my tension and anxiety when I was around people because I always expected to fail. Everyone is frightened of failing, including me.
How I handled social anxiety
I got to the point where I stopped caring about what other people thought or said. I just did what I thought was right; I didn't give any thought if people laughed at me or made fun of me.
Although it may be challenging at first, if you succeed, it is the best feeling. You must put your own needs first. Never mind the people around you, they really don't mind you at all, they don't care if you have dirt on your shoes, if you’re wearing heavy makeup, if your hair color is as bright as a star at night, if you have light or dark skin, if you have old-fashioned clothes, THEY DON'T MIND AT ALL. People are too busy with their own lives to care about your flaws and imperfections. You simply go about your business since others don't care. Whatever you do, be confident of it. How can one be confident? Self-care, kindness toward oneself, constructive connections, and goal-setting are all good things to undertake.
Advice
Be confident -– have confidence. Love and care for yourself. Trust yourself --- have faith in yourself. Do everything for yourself, because at the end of the day, it is yourself that matters.
Keep slaying ladies and gents! ✿♡

just the ladies for now.
I need to do a bit more research for the gents. But I am really curious to see how Sniff, Ulvin, Mace, Knuckles, and the bandit king turn out. I don't really have a clear picture of any of them in my mind except that Sniff is old, Knuckles is brawny and has a beard, and Ulvin is short.
With the exception of the dresses with buttons and the masquerade gowns, everything is (to the best of my research abilities) historically accurate to 1300-1340 CE England. I'm not writing historical fiction so it does not technically matter but I like the opportunities that sticking to one style era has given me to subtly portray things about the characters.
Isadred and her ladies-in-waiting get tailored dresses with buttons! that become popular in 1340, while everyone else is stuck in the 1330s. I like how it shows Isadred's adventurousness and love of sewing and fashion. When she is dressed as a princess, she is wearing what is essentially an avant-garde style. It also is a subtle way to get across just how highborn and wealthy Isa is, in contrast to even the other aristocrats in the story who are still dressing in the old style.
In every scene, except when she is disguised as a boy or in her night clothes Isa wears a barbette beneath her chin. She may be a trend setter, and she may have run away from a marriage to consort with bandits, but she is still deeply religious and not particularly rebellious. She just cares deeply about her own happiness and being kind to others. So, I have decided she covers her chin for modesty, as was common in 1333. However, she does wear the new, thinner style of barbette. (If you ask her, she'll probably just tell you she likes how it frames her face and she feels naked without it.)
[the author also just really likes drawing barbettes, they are very satisfying...]
Wimples were still a thing in 1333 but were mostly worn by older women and nuns. Lady Malrid, an older woman, wears one but her young ladies-in-waiting do not, save for the masquerade scene where they borrow her wimples for their costumes.
As for the masquerade outfits... masked balls were not a thing until 1380, tragically. But! this is not historical fiction so I can do what I want! The Carnivale in Venice, which inspired the first masquerades, has been around since 1162, so I head-canon that a similar tradition exists in Port Nome of Arange (I know I am the author, but it never actually comes up in the story so I don't count it as canon-canon). Adris and Lady Malrid need an excuse to get a bunch of people, incognito, in the same room so they throw a themed party inspired by that tradition. I designed their outfits by melding earlier 1200s fashions (wimples, wide sleeves, ladies' coifs) with the contemporary 1300s fashions, and taking inspiration from Venetian Carnival costumes (many of which incorporate medieval styles even today).
I am also firmly of the opinion that those cylindrical cauls we see beside ladies' ears in the 1200-1300s were just braids, but I gave Adris metal ones for the masquerade anyways because her outfit needed more bling.
A few last little details: Isadred and her ladies-in-waiting wear dresses cut from the same brocade cloth. In the first scene, Isa wears a heraldic dress combining her father's coat of arms (goose) and her husband's (fox). At the masquerade, Lady Malrid wears a heraldic surcoat of her father's house (spades) combined with her husband's (rabbit) so the other guests can identify her as the hostess. Adris covers her hair in every scene until she meets Firnen, not for modesty reasons but just because she really needs a bath. She leaves her hair down deliberately when she meets her husband for the first time. Lady Malrid and her ladies-in-waiting wear out-of-date barbettes and coifs because Lady Malrid is older and Ryeneth is fairly remote. Phraelys's hose do not have pointed toes, her page's tunic has an out-of-date low hem, and her hair is not cut in the new fashionable bowl cut for the same reason. The surcoats Adris gets from the frippery and borrows from Lady Malrid are also out of date because of the remoteness of Ryeneth.
Isadred and Firnen's house heraldry are based off the Vulpecula constellation, where the fox has the goose in it's mouth. (and because Firnen (and Sorin) get likened to foxes for their cleverness.)
@macabremoons and @zmwrites because you two seem to be following this WIP with interest<3
oh wait, I promised you guys mediocre concept art

gojo satoru - chuck bass. charming, your typical ladies man, suave and unpredictable. he is sure to leave your legs sore, chest and neck filled with bite marks, but your names will not be remembered. will do whatever it takes to defend the ones he loves, but don't get him wrong, this tall hot stuff will not hesitate playing dirty either. but nobody really knows what stronger g really feels or thinks about. after all, a mask can really hide what kind of person anyone is really like.
shoko ieiri - vanessa abrams. she's good but poor s, thinking that things would go back to the way they used to be. soft spoken, hard working but what does she feel when one goes down memory lane and thinks about the past interactions she had moments before everything goes downhill? should've asked him to stay and stared harder at the ticking time bomb, s.
geto suguru - nate archibald. oh g, what do you mean that humans are good, kind, and worth saving? they'd betray their own kind, so what makes him think that they would treat the special ones differently? who's to say that g won't change his ways in order to restore the balance he thought existed in the first place? don't play with fire, kids, especially near a bomb-like heart.
nanami kento - rufus humphrey. live life with no regrets, they say. but i am sure this father figure has his own regrets. it's just a matter of time, when he will finally be reunited with the person who he abandoned once to make him rethink the words he wanted to say to his dear i.
mei mei - georgina sparks. what's wrong with being a little wild from time to time? looks like m here resembles g in a lot of ways, from scheming, backstabbing to being someone you can trust your life with. as long as the money keeps on running. oh you know, your typical wild child stuff.
yuji itadori - serena van der woodsen. everyone who meets little i will always fall for him. and the need to destroy but also protect y. what kind of charms did little y used to the point that even the special curses had its soul wrapped around y's finger? don't bite off more than what you can chew, i, otherwise that demon in you will be too hard for you or anyone to control.
utahime iori - blair waldorf. queen b. sophisticated, beautiful, regal and poise. but one warrior scar can tell you thousands worth of stories. wasn't she often seen as weak? just because you appear weak to others doesn't mean you really are. beware ladies and gents, you might not know the abilities of the person you see as a lesser individual compared to yourself.
yuta okkotsu - dan humphrey. spotted. lonely boy who is haunted by the spirit of his former lover. y really thinks that he was cursed, but little does he know that he was the one who put the curse onto his lover's poor spirit. careful y, you'll be running out of lockers to hide the bodies and guilt.
kugisaki nobara - jenny humphrey. little j and little k. the little queens of constance billard and jujutsu high. but for how long? sure, her love for fashion and that youthful soul of hers catches the attention. and the need to join the upper east siders' clique but her bubbles are just waiting to be popped. don't say i didn't warn you.
fushiguro megumi - eric van der woodsen. spotted. another lonely boy. now, what do boys from troubled families tend to have? mommy and daddy issues. seems to me that little m still doesn't know the atrocities his daddy dearest committed. but you didn't hear it from me. let the boy find it out with the help of stronger s.
fushiguro toji - bartholomew bass. ruthless, sexy as hell, maybe even hell himself because everything he touches burns. will he have a chance of redemption or will he waste it away like how he sold his soul the moment he decided to throw it into the realms of money, lust and desire? will family be his saviour? or will he leave it again just like he did on the day little m was born?
rumours has it that little k's whereabouts is still unknown and stronger g is locked up in a place that neither you or me can reach. but what is life for these jujutsu sorcerers and curse users without the revoltingly delicious taste of drama? you know you love me. xoxo, gossip girl.

the misadventures of nathan and samuel morgan
pairing: none
genre(?): flashback, siblings, coming of age
warnings: none that i can think of
words: 6,244
summary:
"If this whole treasure-hunting thing doesn't work out, maybe we should join the circus." "Not when they have clowns." "Wow. Still not over that?" "No one is."
note:
this is a short story of the drake brothers' time in the orphanage because i think about it a lot. nate was 10, sam was 15.
“It'll be fun,” Sam had said. “I promise there'll be magicians too.”
Nathan Morgan clutched his magician’s hat that Father Duffy gave him in his little hands. He'd just turned ten and he was obsessed with all things magic. The other kids were outside for recess but he'd asked his older brother, Sam, to spectate the new magic tricks he'd learned from a book – another one of Father Duffy’s birthday-slash-Christmas-slash-New Years gifts to him.
Sam was supposed to be in detention, but had snuck out when the elderly nun watching over him had fallen asleep. For once he thanked God for the chance to escape because his hand was starting to cramp from writing “I will not smoke in the chapel” (which was false, he had tried to reason with Sister Catherine--he was smoking behind the chapel) on the blackboard over and over again. At fifteen, he was tall and lanky, a trait he'd inherited from his father. He hated the orphanage and did everything he could to get kicked out somehow.
A week before Nathan’s birthday, Sam found a flyer for a circus coming into town that month. The last time he went to one was before their mother died, but he remembered how fun it was and he knew he just had to take Nathan.
“I don't know,” the younger Morgan brother stared down at the hole in his sock, where his big toe peeked out. He didn't have a magician's cape so he wore his blanket around his shoulders, making him look smaller than he actually was. “Won't you get in trouble for sneaking out again?”
“Who says I'll get in trouble?” Sam shrugged. “They won't know.”
Nathan was still hesitant until Sam sighed and pulled out the tickets from his pocket. The little boy’s eyes lit up at the bright red and blue tickets, wiping his pudgy hands on his pajamas before taking the tickets from Sam. He read the print on it:
Come one! Come all!
Barns and Barney Circus
Wednesday
January 7, 1986
4:00 p.m.
Boston
“I told them you were nine so the other ticket could be free,” Sam grinned.
That was how young Nathan found himself clinging onto Sam’s denim jacket as they stood in line to get into the large blue and white tent, lights illuminating the field it was on. He had told one of the nuns he was feeling sick and faked a fever and a coughing fit so they'd feel sorry for him. They let him stay in bed all day so as soon as he was alone and all the other kids were downstairs saying grace before supper, he stuffed his pillows under his blanket to give the impression he was still in bed, grabbed his magician’s hat and snuck out the window. Sam on the other hand gave no excuses.
“Wow, that's a cool hat you've got there, sport,” the man collecting tickets winked at Nathan. He wore a velveteen suit and had a swirly mustache that reminded Nathan of the villains in the comics he'd read. He shyly hid behind Sam.
“It's his first circus,” Sam handed the man their tickets and took Nathan’s hand to lead them to their seats. “Relax, Nathan. Circuses are so fun.”
Nathan sat next to Sam, looking around as people began to fill up the tent. The lights suddenly dimmed and a spotlight illuminated the middle of the ring. With a poof and lots of smoke, the man in the velveteen suit from earlier appeared. Nathan leaned forward in his seat in awe.
“Is he a magician?” He whispered to Sam.
“Of sorts,” Sam whispered back. “He's the ringleader.”
“Oh,” Nathan turned his attention back to the man.
“Good evening, ladies and gents!” The man’s voice boomed throughout the tent. “Welcome to the Barns and Barney circus here in wonderful Boston to start the new year with a bang!”
Entry of the Gladiators started playing on the speakers as performers came out onto the ring one by one; acrobats, tightrope walkers, dancers, jugglers on unicycles, magicians, a man with a chimpanzee on his shoulder, and many, many clowns.
Nathan was suddenly nervous as he watched the clowns in their colourful wigs and various mismatched outfits entertained the guests. He couldn't understand why, but they unsettled him. He glanced up at Sam, who looked excited at all the acts, but otherwise unphased by the clowns.
The trapeze acts started the show, with spectators ooh-ing and ah-ing at acrobats flying across the room. Then came the jugglers performing comedic acts that made everyone laugh, especially Sam. The show kept going on, and Nathan began to let himself enjoy it, eyes bright at all the acts.
Then came the clowns.
“What was that?” The ringleader leaned towards one of the clowns dressed in a bright blue costume and a large red wig sporting his head. “You want a volunteer?”
Nathan shrunk in his seat as other people raised their hands, yelling “Me! Choose me!” No way did he want to be near any of the clowns.
“You there!” The ringleader pointed in their direction.
Sam pointed at himself in confusion and the ringleader shook his head.
“The little magician sitting in the third row!”
Nathan’s heart began to pound quickly, his hands shaking.
“Go! Go!” Sam egged him on.
His legs felt like jelly as he stood up and hesitantly walked towards the ring, one of the pretty acrobats leading him there. He began to sweat as he was suddenly surrounded by clowns laughing and fooling around.
“And what is your name, young magician?” One of the clowns asked.
“N-Nate,” he stuttered a little too quietly. “N-Nate the Great.”
“Nate the Great!” The clown bellowed, receiving a few giggles from the audience. Nathan wanted to disappear at the very moment.
Suddenly he was surrounded by clowns laughing and dancing, their bright clothes, wigs, and makeup making him uneasy with every passing moment. He looked around for Sam in the audience and saw him giving a reassuring thumbs up, but it didn't help. The world felt like it was spinning around Nathan and the next thing he knew, he felt his jeans get wet.
There were gasps in the crowd, then laughter. Nathan looked down and to his horror, he had wet himself right there. In front of maybe a hundred people. He closed his eyes tightly.
Wake up, wake up, Nate! He wished and prayed it was just a bad nightmare, even muttering the prayers Sister Catherine made him memorise.
Hail Mary, full of grace...
But when Nathan opened his eyes, he was still surrounded by clowns, but they curiously looked at him, no longer laughing.
He closed his eyes again. Reciting the prayer over and over.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
“Nathan! Nathan!” He felt someone tug at his arm and before he knew it, Sam was dragging him out of the tent.
Nathan felt like he couldn't breathe as he sat on the grass, tears streaming down his face. Sam quietly sat next to him on the grass with a grunt.
“You okay?” Sam nudged him.
“No,” Nathan sniffled. “I don't wanna go to another circus ever again.”
“Okay,” Sam shrugged off his jacket and handed it to Nathan. “Here, wrap this around your waist.”
They quietly sat together as Nathan tried to calm himself down. It felt like no matter how much he tried, he couldn't breathe at all. Sam worriedly watched his little brother, a little guilty for letting him go through whatever happened with the clowns. He made a mental note to watch for cues of whenever Nathan felt uneasy about something.
“Uh, excuse me?” A man approached him. He wore the same blue clown costume from earlier, except he didn't have a wig on and no makeup.
“What?” Sam snapped.
“I just wanted to apologise for what happened… In there.”
Nathan kept his head between his knees, too afraid to look up.
“Here,” the man handed Sam a pair of sweatpants. “It might be a little baggy, but it's better than a wet pair of pants.”
“Thanks.”
Sam hesitantly took the pants from the man before he bid them farewell.
“Is he gone?” Nathan mumbled.
“Yeah, he's gone.”
Nathan looked up and was relieved to see just Sam, holding a pair of sweatpants.
“I can't wear that! That's clown clothes!” He protested.
“You'd rather walk around covered in piss?”
Nathan frowned, looking down at his soiled jeans. It did feel very uncomfortable and it wasn't helping that the wetness made him feel colder.
“Fine,” he grumbled, taking the sweatpants from Sam and stomped behind a tree. “Don't look.”
“Ew, no way in hell,” Sam rolled his eyes, turning away to watch the pretty acrobat who stood outside the tent, smoking a cigarette. He considered going up to her to ask for a cigarette, and if he was lucky, her number.
“It's baggy,” Nathan emerged from behind the tree, holding the sweatpants up.
“Just roll the top until it kinda fits.”
Nathan sighed, quietly mocking Sam. “Roll the top until it fits.”
“I look stupid.”
Sam turned back to look at Nathan awkwardly standing by the tree, the sweatpants were baggy and rolled up at his waist and ankles. He suppressed a laugh, instead he awkwardly stood and bit at his nails.
“No, you look fine,” he nodded. “Come on, let's get some ice cream then head back.”
They walked to an old fashioned drug store and ordered two ice cream sodas. The only other people there were the elderly man at the cashier reading a newspaper and a guy probably in his early 20’s who served the ice cream and sodas.
Nathan was still bummed out as he picked at a maraschino cherry. His magician’s hat was on the counter next to him and he pushed it away.
“My career is ruined.”
Sam chuckled. “Come on, no one in there is going to remember that.”
“I'll remember it,” Nathan sighed. “No more Nate the Great.”
“Don't be so dramatic,” Sam picked up the hat. “No one else in the orphanage can pull Mr. Wiggles out of a hat, right?”
Nathan nodded. Mr. Wiggles was a stuffed bunny that one of the younger boys, Ralph, owned. A lot of the younger ones always enjoyed Nathan’s tricks before bed.
“Can't let Ralph down, can we?” Sam nudged him before stuffing a spoonful of ice cream in his mouth. He immediately regretted the instant brain freeze.
“No.”
Nathan took the hat from Sam who was still recovering from the brain freeze and he took a deep breath before hesitantly placing it on his head. The laughter, the wetness, and especially the clowns all came back to him and he tossed the hat on the ground with a yelp.
“Seriously, Nathan?” Sam sighed as he picked up the hat.
“I can't, Sam.”
Sam simply gave him a pat on the back. “No more circuses.”
“No more clowns.”
“No more clowns.”
Nathan crawled into his bed in a fresh pair of pajamas but he couldn't drift off to sleep. He knew he was a lot safer inside the orphanage, surrounded by the other boys who he shared the room with, yet the image of the clowns and the audience laughing was stuck in his mind. He tossed and turned in his bed, wishing Sam wasn't assigned to a different room so he'd have someone to talk to.
Over the next few days, Sam tried to avoid bringing up the circus around Nathan, but he still felt a bit bad about it. Nathan stopped wearing his magician’s hat and cape, opting to sit alone in the library reading comic books instead of performing tricks in front of the other kids. Of course, Father Duffy noticed.
“Samuel, I need to talk to you,” Father Duffy approached Sam as he sat on the bleachers.
Sam instantly put his cigarette out, crushing it under his sneaker and sheepishly turning back to the Father.
“Heyy, Father Duffy, I was just trying out that cigarette that Edward gave me, by the way,” Sam sheepishly said. “It was disgusting. People should never smoke. Did I mention Edward gave it to me?”
“Samuel,” Father Duffy sighed as he sat next to him on the bench. “I wanted to ask about Nate.”
“My brother? What'd he do now?”
“Well, it's what he hasn't been doing that's got me worried. He seems… Quieter than usual?”
Sam stayed silent. He shrugged, feigning innocence.
“Have you noticed it?”
“Well,” Sam stood up and paced. “He hasn't… Been playing with those magic thingies…”
“I'm just worried he might be depressed about something, Sam.” Father Duffy was always worried about either of the brothers getting too depressed after learning about how their mother passed. He reached into his pocket and gave him a ten dollar bill. “Can I trust you to go out and get him a nice magician’s coat?”
“Yeah,” Sam gingerly took the bill and stuffed it in his pocket.
“I'll get Sister Maureen to take you to the market tomorrow morning,” Father Duffy said. “And for the love of God, stop smoking. It's terrible for your lungs.”
“Thank you, Father Duffy,” Sam muttered as he walked away, lighting up another cigarette as soon as the priest was out of sight.
Sister Maureen was a stout Irish woman in her forties who always looked cross, but Sam felt like he got along just fine with her. For one thing, she had Fight For Your Right by the Beastie Boys loudly playing on the radio as she drove him to downtown Boston. This pleased Sam. He liked the Beastie Boys.
“Now don't you be taking your sweet time in there or I'll throw you in detention,” she said in a monotone voice as she parked the car. “Be back in half an hour. I'll be at the store.”
“You got it, Sister,” Sam winked before he got out of the car.
He still had the Beastie Boys song in his head and despite being in his uniform that consisted of a white button down shirt, a pair of black slacks, and a blue vest that had “St. Francis Academy” on the left chest, he felt cool. He felt the bill in his pocket as he made his way to the closest department store.
“Cool,” Sam smiled into the mirror as he tried on a pair of aviators. He looked at the price. Five dollars. If he was going to get Nathan a nice gift he could use for magic, he wouldn't have enough. He considered his choices; he could do the right thing and just buy what Father Duffy asked, or he could treat himself to a nice pair of sunglasses and still find Nathan a nice gift.
He was about to make up his mind to do the right thing when he looked out the window and saw an open-air market across the street. Maybe he could find something there. There was the usual local produce as Sam strolled around, hoping there would be the odd stall with weird antiquities. Instead, he came across an elderly woman with rabbits in a cage. This gave Sam an idea.
“Hey, lady, how much for a bunny?” He asked her.
“Just four dollars, dear,” she sweetly smiled.
“Sold!” Sam pointed at a fat white bunny munching on a carrot. “I'll take that one.”
“For feck’s sake,” Sister Maureen simply gave Sam a weird look as he climbed back into the car with a little cage in his arms and a shiny new pair of sunglasses. “Did you get what you needed?”
“Oh yeah,” Sam nodded. “Let's roll, Sister Maureen.”
He felt even cooler when No Sleep Till Brooklyn played loudly as the nun drove back.
Nathan was lying on the ground, focusing on his drawing of Indiana Jones. He'd finally got to watch Raiders of the Lost Ark when they showed it at the movie night a couple days ago, and he was intrigued. He began imagining himself as a swashbuckling explorer again.
Sam poked his head into the room, scanning the room for his little brother.
“I have something for you,” he walked over to Nathan. “A late present.”
He pushed his sunglasses up and plopped down on the floor and placed the little cage in front of Nathan.
“No way,” Nathan gasped, pushing his sketches away to hold the bunny in his hands. “Is this allowed?”
“Father Duffy paid for it,” Sam gave a nonchalant shrug.
“I'm gonna name him Doc.”
“What's up, Doc?” Sam laughed as Nathan left the bunny to him so he could grab his magician’s hat and wrapped his blanket around his shoulders. A crowd of three to four little boys ranging from ages five to nine who were loitering around the room had gathered around, curiously looking at the brothers and whispering to each other.
“And now,” Nathan addressed the crowd. “The return of Nate the Great!”
He gestured for Sam to stand up.
“I shall now introduce the bunny, Doc, who I shall pull out of my hat!”
Ooh!
Sam stood behind Nathan after secretly giving him the bunny and he put the sunglasses on again.
“Abra cadabra!” Nathan quickly popped open the top of the hat and slid Doc inside.
“You don't have a bunny!” One of the smaller boys called out as he picked his nose.
“Then what do you call…” Nathan stuffed his hand into the bottom of the hat and gently pulled Doc out by the ears. “This!”
Aah!
Laughter filled the room as Nathan went through his routine of magic tricks, now improved with an even better assistant, Doc.
“Now, I like the sound laugh–” Father Duffy stood at the doorway and froze when he saw the bunny in Nathan’s hand. “What is that?”
“A bunny!” Sam grinned. “Isn't it just the best present?”
Father Duffy slumped against the doorway and sighed. Oh, Samuel.
“That's very nice,” he muttered. “Sam–can I speak to you in the hall for a second?”
“Sure thing, Father,” Sam followed the priest out into the hall and closed the door to the room where Nathan was showing the boys some card tricks.
“A live animal, Samuel?” Father Duffy crossed his arms. “I asked you to get him a cape .”
“ Oh ,” Sam hummed. “I swear I don't remember you saying anything specific, so I chose the gift I thought would be best for him.”
“You do know you boys aren't allowed to keep pets.”
“Come on, Father Duffy. Don't sweat it. We'll keep Doc out in that old cage near the garden.”
“Samuel, I don't trust you with an animal like that.”
“That's a low blow,” Sam looked up at Father Duffy through his shades. “But fine, it's Nathan’s pet now. He’ll take care of it.”
“Is anything the matter?” Nathan peeped out the door, the bunny still in his hand. “Is Sam in trouble again?”
“I was just telling your brother how it's a lot of hard work to take care of rabbits,” Father Duffy turned his attention to the younger Morgan brother.
“I'm sure there's books on rabbit care in the library,” Nathan held up the bunny. “I named him Doc.”
“That's nice,” Father Duffy sighed. “Fine. As long as you promise to clean up after him and to feed him yourself. Okay?”
“See, that's why you're my favourite priest,” Sam gave him a playful punch on the shoulder. “Was that a sin?”
“Shades, Samuel.”
Nathan loved Doc. He's never had a pet before so he made it his mission to prove to himself and to Father Duffy and Sister Catherine that he was responsible enough to take care of the bunny. Apart from Sam, Nathan didn't really have any other friends, and he wouldn't really call Ralph-- who was just six -- a friend. Sam was in the highschool section of the orphanage so when Nathan had no one else to talk to, he'd sneak off to Doc’s cage to talk to the rabbit and to draw. He must've drawn Doc a thousand times that first month. His drawing studies of the rabbit eventually evolved into Super Doc, a series of comics about a superhero rabbit fighting off villains that all looked like clowns.
“Whatcha drawing there, dingbat?” Edward, one of the older boys approached Nathan. He was large and had his black hair slicked back, making him look like a cockroach. He was in the highschool section too and was just a year younger than Sam. Two other boys, Jay and Danny, were close behind, giving Nathan menacing grins.
“Shouldn't you be in algebra? Or did you flunk that again?” Nathan quickly shut his notebook, but Edward grabbed it from him.
“Super Doc?” Edward laughed. “More like Super Dork, am I right?”
“You're just like your brother,” Jay, who was smaller and leaner, poked Nathan’s shoulder. “A friendless loser.”
“At least we aren't stupid,” Nathan tried to reach for his notebook. “Give it back, Edward!”
Edward tossed it to Danny, who stood six-foot-two at the age of fourteen. The taller boy laughed and pushed Nathan away. “Loser.”
Blinded by rage, Nathan kicked Danny in the shin, causing him to drop the notebook as he doubled over. Nathan picked it up and stuffed it into his backpack before landing a punch on Edward’s cheek.
“Scrawny little punk,” Edward pushed him on the ground, making Nathan fall with a grunt. “You're gonna regret this.”
Jay and Danny pinned Nathan down as Edward grabbed a fistful of sand. Nathan kicked and yelled, knocking off Jay’s glasses in the process. He closed his eyes as Edward’s fist neared his face. It happened enough for him to anticipate, and he wasn't looking forward to eating a sand and knuckle sandwich.
He heard Edward grunt and the sound of someone falling on the sand.
“You get away from him, you assholes!” Sam yelled. Nathan opened his eyes and saw Sam throwing punches at Edward and Danny.
Nathan turned to Jay and punched him square on the jaw. The older boy held his jaw in pain.
“What the fuck?”
“That's right, Nathan!” Sam yelled as he dodged a blow from Danny. He almost looked like he was having fun. “Jab, jab, hook!”
Jab, jab, hook . Nathan repeated it in his mind over and over again. He mimicked Sam in his movements, anticipating Jay’s every move. Jab, jab, hook.
“Oof!” Nathan flew back as Jay hit him in the eye.
“Stupid kid,” Jay pushed him and he bumped into Sam, who frowned.
“Come on, Nathan. Fight’s not over.”
When Sam was distracted, Edward threw another punch at Sam’s cheek and threw him down on the ground. Sam groaned as he tried to get up again.
“No one wants either of you,” he kicked sand at them and the other boys followed. “One day you’re going to get kicked out, Morgan, and no one's gonna remember you and no one's gonna want you, you insignificant little freak.”
Nathan’s blood boiled. He wanted to stand up and fight Edward again, but his eye was throbbing.
“This isn't over, Gilbertson,” Sam gritted his teeth. “I'm gonna kick your ass.”
“Loser,” Edward kicked sand at them again before walking off.
Sam sighed as he laid back on the dirt floor and put his shades that were hanging on his vest on. He lit up a cigarette and puffed a few angry smokes.
“Thanks,” Nathan mumbled.
“Yeah. Don't mention it.”
“I hate it here, Sam.”
“Me too.”
Nathan buried his face between his knees and Sam worriedly looked up.
“Hey, none of what he said is true, alright?” Sam said. “That bozo doesn't know what he's talking about.”
The younger Morgan brother said nothing.
“That was badass, though. Did you see Jay?” Sam suddenly laughed. “When have you ever seen a ten year old beat up a thirteen year old?”
“Maybe if the magician thing doesn't fly, I'll try out boxing,” Nathan said.
“Yeah!” Sam grinned as he sat up. “I'll be your boxing coach.”
“I'll beat Edward and all those clowns up myself then.”
“Attaboy, Nathan!”
They laughed and watched the clouds roll by until they fell asleep from exhaustion. Nathan dreamt of Doc saving him from a pack of bully clowns.
Something was wrong. Something was very, very wrong. Doc was nowhere to be found. It was late in the evening and Nathan had been practicing some tricks in the activity room when the rabbit disappeared. He immediately went to Sam (who was, for some reason, asleep on the bleachers outside still in his uniform) for help.
“Well where did you leave him?” Sam stood in the middle of the room with his hands on his hips while Nathan rummaged through the pillows on the sofa.
“Here!” The young boy pointed at the sofa. “At least he was here before I went to pee. I didn't think he'd leave.”
“He's a chunky rabbit. He wouldn't have gone too far,” Sam walked towards a bulletin board filled with artworks from the other fifth graders in Nathan’s class. He chuckled at a blob with green eyes. “What the hell did Bobby draw?”
“You could be helping me, you know,” Nathan threw a throw pillow at him.
“Oh no, he's your pet.”
Nathan rolled his eyes as he crawled around looking under the couches.
It was then that a loud yell came from across the hall.
“Nathan!”
Father Duffy barged into the activity room in his pajamas, holding Doc in his arms.
There were little rabbit droppings on the priest’s bedsheets, to Nathan’s horror and to Sam’s amusement. Sam tried to suppress a laugh, but he ran out guffawing.
“Oh crap,” Nathan gulped. “I'll clean it up. I promise, Father Duffy.”
“This is the last straw,” Father Duffy was exasperated. “Nate, you promised you'd keep the rabbit outside in its cage.”
“I just took him in to practice for the talent show tomorrow.”
“One more talent show, Nate,” Father Duffy sighed. “Then the rabbit has to go.”
“What?” Nathan ran after him as he left the room to get a cup of tea. “But he's my rabbit.”
“I know, but it's getting out of hand. Oh, Sister Catherine!” Father Duffy called to the nun who just came out of one of the offices.
“Yes, Father?” Her eyebrows knitted.
“Please help Nathan get new sheets. His pet left a little surprise on my bed. I need some chamomile tea.”
Sister Catherine worriedly looked at the rabbit in Nathan’s arms. “A… Pet?”
“He's nice,” Nathan said quietly.
“Then make sure Nathan and Sam are in their respective rooms after,” Father Duffy yawned and made his way to the pantry. “You’ll know where I'll be.”
The boys had the tip of their ears pinched as Sister Catherine led them to the laundry room and handed them fresh sheets. She stood by the door as she watched them clean the rabbit droppings off with a tiny hand broom.
“Father Duffy wants to get rid of Doc,” Nathan whispered as he tugged the other side of the bedsheet.
“He's just saying that,” Sam scoffed.
“No, I think he's serious.”
“Well, what am I supposed to do about it?”
“Can we hide him or maybe set him free?”
“Nathan,” Sam gave him an exasperated look. “He's a rabbit. He's prey to almost everything. He's as good as dead out there.”
“I can't just let him take Doc away.”
“Okay, fine. Let's clean this mess up then I'll think of something.”
Sister Catherine made sure Nathan had put Doc back in his cage before making them go back to their rooms. Sam had said nothing else regarding the rabbit, and it made Nathan anxious. He almost forgot about the talent show.
The next morning, Nathan threw on his uniform and stuffed his makeshift magician's costume in his backpack and ran to Doc’s cage before his first class. The rabbit was still there, munching on vegetables that Mr. O’Reilly, the gardener, probably fed him earlier.
“Big day, Doc,” Nathan took him out of the cage to clean out the droppings and the leakings. He couldn't help but give him a quick kiss on the head, ignoring the strong smell of rabbit. “This is the performance of our lives and hopefully not the last one too.”
He reached into his pocket to grab a handful of pellets and sprinkled it into Doc’s food bowl. “Eat up, big guy. I'll see you in a few.”
Sam trudged to his pre-calculus class, lazily copying down last night’s homework from one of his roommates. He barely slept and all he wanted was to crawl back into bed and sleep the day away. He kept thinking about what he was going to do with the damn rabbit. Sam wouldn't admit, but he was fond of it. He wasn't always around for his little brother and he still felt bad about the whole clown fiasco, but at least the rabbit gave Nathan some comfort.
He thought about giving the rabbit away to a pet store, but what pet store would want a large rabbit like that? He shuddered to think of Doc ending up as rabbit stew somehow. Then he remembered the old woman he bought Doc from at the Haymarket market. He prayed she'd be there after the talent show that evening. He didn't have a Plan B.
“Abra cadabra!” Nathan repeated over and over, trying to decide which one sounded better. Ralph was on stage doing some kind of yodel and he was just waiting to finally be called up on stage.
“Alright, Nathan, here's the plan,” Sam appeared from around the auditorium. “After your performance, you meet me at the roof with the door that'll lead us out the West Gate. We're gonna catch the T to Haymarket and pray to god the old lady selling the rabbits is still at the market. Understand?”
Nathan sadly nodded. He didn't want to think about how he had to part with Doc soon.
Sam put a hand on his shoulder. “This is the best thing for Doc.”
“I guess so.”
“It'll be fine,” Sam gave him a playful punch on the shoulder. “See you later, little brother.”
“Sure,” Nathan sighed as Sam ran off. He kneeled in front of Doc, whose beady red eyes wandered around, his wet nose in the air as he sniffed around. For a second, a wave of sadness hit Nathan and he let himself shed a few tears for his best friend.
“Now for our next performer…” Father Duffy stood on stage, looking at the little faces in the audience. Some were bored, some looked excited to see more performances. “The very magical Nate the Great!”
Nathan took a deep breath before stepping out into the limelight, squinting at the bright, hot light. Ignoring the expecting gazes, he set his table up, making sure Doc was secure near the little trap door he could pull him out of (he spent a few weeks making that table in home improvement class).
For a second, he felt his heart race as he remembered the clowns and the audience at the circus laughing at him. He glanced down at his trousers. Not wet. Good start.
“Go Nathan!” A single voice yelled. It sounded like Sam, but as Nathan peered out into the audience, he couldn't see him.
“Welcome, my fellow schoolmates! My name is Nate the Great and I'm here to amaze you with magic!”
He began his routine: starting off with a floating card trick and bending a spoon. The audience which he now realised was mostly other boys in the grade school, ooh-ed and aah-ed with every trick. Nathan asked Ralph to come up and volunteer to have a coin vanish from his palm and reappear from his ear. The six year old laughed throughout it.
As he went on, Nathan’s confidence went up, and finally it was Doc’s turn to help him amaze the crowd.
“For my last trick I'm going to pull out a very special friend of mine,” Nathan took his hat off and showed the inside of it to the audience. “As you can see, there is nothing in my hat.”
Wow!
Nathan gave a cheeky grin as he strategically placed the hat on the table, opening the secret door quickly. “Abra cadabra!”
He gently pulled the now rather large Doc out of the hat and held him up for the audience to see. The little boys laughed and cheered at the appearance of a live animal. They were reminded of a trip to the petting zoo just a month ago, where they plenty of bunnies like Doc.
“Thank you!” Nathan grinned as he held Doc to his chest, bowing down a few times until Father Duffy ushered him off the stage.
He was still thrilled as he left the auditorium, smiling at himself and the recent memory.
“We did it, Doc,” he whispered at the rabbit, giving it a kiss between its fuzzy ears. He took out a few baby carrots and gave them to him. As much as he tried not to, tears still dripped down his cheeks.
Sam leaned by the door on top of the roof of their rendezvous point. He was getting antsy and Nathan was taking too long to get there. It wasn't Nathan’s intention to get there too slow, though; it was hard to climb the usual route with a fragile creature in his backpack.
“What took you so long?” Sam rolled his eyes as Nathan climbed over the railing.
“Why are you in such a hurry? They're busy with the dumb talent show.”
“Whatever,” Sam opened the door. “Let's go.”
It was quarter past 6 PM when they got to Hanover Street, briskly walking to the open-air market. Most of the vendors have already packed up and some were cleaning up, happy to be done with the day.
Sam was suddenly nervous. The T ran slower than he remembered (the last time he rode the subway was before their father left them in the orphanage), instantly hating all the station transfers and the waiting. At this point, he was praying the old woman would still be there.
Nathan tried to keep up with Sam, but he couldn't keep up. Sam had told him to keep his eyes peeled for an old woman with rabbits, but all he saw were empty stalls and boxes of fresh produce.
“A bunny!” A girl just a few years younger than Nathan ran up to him. She had blonde hair tied up in pigtails and soft brown eyes. “What's his name?”
“Doc,” Nathan smiled.
“He's so cute!” She squealed. “Will he bite?”
“Not at all.” He took out a piece of cabbage from his pocket. “Here, you can feed him.”
The girl giggled in delight as Doc ate from her hand.
“There you are!” An older woman who Nathan assumed was the little girl’s mother ran up to them. “Let's go, I got the strawberries we can snack on tonight.”
“Look, Mom, it's a cute rabbit,” the little girl said.
“That's nice sweetie, but we have to go,” the woman took her hand.
Just then, Sam walked back to Nathan with an annoyed look on her face. “She's gone. Saw her drive away.”
“He needs a home, you know,” Nathan told the woman and the girl. “He's talented and he'll keep you safe and happy.”
The little girl’s eyes went wide. “Mom, please, please, please, please !”
“We already have Peaches, honey.”
“Peaches is a fish . I can't kiss a fish.”
“Lady, this rabbit is one of a kind,” Sam stepped in. “He's magic .”
“Oh, brother,” the woman groaned.
“I swear ever since we got him, good things have just been happening,” Sam shrugged. “If we weren't stuck in an orphanage, we could've kept him.”
“You're orphans?” The lady looked at them, finally noticing their clean cut uniforms.
The brothers gave her their best puppy dog eyes, knowing how well it always worked.
“I promise I'll take care of him!” The little girl tugged at the woman’s coat.
She sighed, a sign the boys knew all too well meant she'd fallen for it.
“Okay, we'll take the rabbit,” she said wearily and the little girl squealed loudly.
Nathan held up Doc and smiled at the rabbit, blinking back tears. He thought of all the times they spent together and cherished this last moment.
“Thank you,” he whispered before gently placing him in the little girl’s arms.
“And here,” the woman handed him coupons. “You can use this at any food store at Quincy Market.”
“Thanks,” Nathan smiled. “Please take care of Doc.”
“We will,” she nodded.
He stood, watching mother and daughter leave with his best friend. He sniffled, finally letting his tears roll down his cheeks. Sam gave him a comforting pat on the back.
“He's found a great home, Nathan.”
“He had a home with me.”
“Well now he has a home where he can just be a happy little rabbit and not worry about getting kicked out at the smallest of sins.”
Nathan nodded. “He'll be okay right, Sam?”
“Sure he will.”
“What's next for us?”
Sam tapped his chin in thought, then the coupons in Nathan’s hand caught his eye.
“We can get coconut macaroons.”

Insecure chapter 3
Otis driftwood x Reader
( I do not own these gifs)
Masterlist is here. Please see warnings ⚠️
The next day the eve before Halloween, you were at work; you worked about one or two days a week at Captain's Spalding's gas station and chicken roadside attraction. Spalding had become a father figure to you in the years you've known the family. He knew your father too briefly when home; this is where your dad would always fill up his truck before leaving again. You'd still hang out in the shop with your dad while he chatted or killed time. He knew you were a good kid; that’s why when he found out you were dating his adopted son Otis he was overjoyed. You would help him outrunning the register while he would make fried chicken in the back. It was a fun environment, you talking with Spaulding for hours and laughing until your sides hurt. So that night, you're sweeping the gas station/ art exhibit while admiring Otis's art around the place. It filled you with pride that your guy was so talented and creative.
The shop bell rang, and in walked two young men who were not from around here. You listened in on their; conversation, and apparently, these groups of young people were on the road in hopes of writing a book on offbeat roadside attractions. You watched and held in a laugh from behind one of the shelves as Spaulding messed with one of the young men you learned was named Bill; he always liked to press people's buttons, and this time was no separate thing." oh, I'm just messing with ya son! Look take a load off. I’ll have y/n get ya some refreshments or something. At the same time, I set up the ride y/n Darlin c'mere would ya" you set down the broom. You walked over to the men, your boots clacking on the wooden floor. " Evening gents, I'm y/n does anyone want any water, sprite … burdon?"
You chucked a bit, which seemed to loosen the guys up; you learned the other was named jerry. " Oh, we're good; we’re just gonna go get our friends who are out in the car. I'll be back" as Jerry leaves, you turn your attention to Bill, you lean slightly against the counter "so roadside attractions, huh? Seems interesting" "Yeah! It's been pretty cool so far being to a lot of interesting places," you noticed Bill was giving off some you assumed to be nervous body language, I mean, you couldn't blame him; this was placed in the middle of nowhere with a loud clown gas station owner. " Is Spaulding making you nervous? He's a lot, but I wear he's just a pussycat he won't hurt ya ``'' oh no no he's fine it's just been a long drive, so how long have you been working here you like it ?" Bill asked while seemingly eyeing you up and down " I like it's it's.." your conversation was cut short by the two women coming inside. They seem to turn their nose up at the place before setting their sights on you with an unimpressed expression, sigh, so it was these types of girls. " Evening ladies! Can I get you anything? We have " " Jerry Bill, when are we going to leave? We don't want to go on this stupid ride," the one you later learned was named Mary said. You took this opportunity to walk away, passing Spaulding toward the backroom; he winked at you as he passed, " everyone ready for the ride; let’s go, people ''.
Afterward, you got your coat and waited for Baby; usually, Otis picked you up from work when you worked nights at the gas station and call him old-fashioned. Still, the idea of you driving alone didn't sit right with him. But this was different; you insisted o. Still, the picking you up because 1. She was already heading into town to get people from red hot pussy liquors, and 2. You knew Otis wanted to work on his art and let off some steam with the cheerleaders there 3. You suddenly saw your guests for the evening event tomorrow. While the group was on the ride, you decided to call the house and inform Baby of the plan. While the guests loaded up into the ride, you pulled Spaulding aside and informed him of what you planned to do. He smiled wide and said, " this is why you're one of our kiddos.” Baby agreed to have you drop her off on the road toward the path of the tree and instructed Rufus to blow out the tires while you went along to the house.
Everything went off without a hitch. As everyone sat down for dinner, you hurried down the stairs from freshening up in the bathroom; you eyed Otis sitting at the front of the table, god he was so handsome, and you were so in love. You walked over to him when you heard your name "y/n wow hey!! You live here what a small world" you turned to see Bill smiling at you, " oh hey Bill! What a small world indeed" you turned back to Otis ``honey you want a beer?", Otis didn't answer at first; instead he looked back and forth to Bill and you, eyes shifting ever so slightly, he cleared his throat " yeah sure Darlin I'd love one" as you passed him he grabbed your belt hook and pulled your toward him, " give me some sugar first" you happily obliged leaning down to give him a soft kiss on the lips. He kissed you back, never taking his eyes off Bill, who awkwardly looked away from the scene.
You came back with a beer for Otis and went to take a seat next to him; he instead pulled you down into his lap. You quickly got comfortable not minding the PDA at all; this was your family; they were used to this kind of affection between you both. You looked over to Denise's ring on her hand; it was beautiful, a ruby, you thought. " Wow, that is a gorgeous ring! Is that a ruby" you leaned forward a bit to get a better look, to which Denise pulled her hand away and set her hand on her lap. " Um yeah, it is, and it's a real Ruby too it's from Jerry '' she looked over to him "wow, that was a nice gift," you said " yeah, well I deserve it," Denise replied. " You want a ruby someday y/n? '' Otis asked, causing you to turn back to look at him " I'll get you one day if you want,” “ I wouldn't say no to a ruby someday,” you replied. The rest of the night went on as planned; the group was tied up and used for the family's party favors.
As the night winded down, you stood out in the backyard smoking; the house had been pretty humid with the rain and hot air; it was a nice stillness standing under the porch watching the rain. " There you are the fuck you doing out here, shoulda told me you were going for a smoke" Otis appeared behind you, standing in the doorway biting his lower lip. "Sorry handsome, you looked so focused and didn't wanna intrude on the art project" he sat down next to you on the porch bench as you passed him the joint. " This was a good day, '' you told him, leaning Into him as he put his arm around you. " Yeah, it was huh," he takes a long drag of the joint and slowly blow it out, " you think you could see yourself doing this forever?" " Doing what? smoking in the rain, yeah, of course ``'' I mean spending your days doing fucked up shit with me" you take the joint back, also taking a long drag, " nowhere else I would rather be ''.
He removed his arm from behind you and turns to face you. "I've been thinking," he scratches his face and looks down at his hand all stained with blood, " I know I ain't the most attentive or expressive kinda guy. I'm not good with the mushy shit," you start to protest. He puts his hand up " let me finish like I was saying I ain't good at the mushy shit or telling you how I feel. I know I can be a pain in the fucking ass to deal with, but you are the greatest thing I've ever come across." He looks at you fully this time with sincerity and vulnerability you've never seen; it was rare to see this much from Otis, usually only showing you got some pieces of his soft side when you two were alone.
You didn't Dare move or speak after that. It was almost like you were seeing a baby deer in front of you. You didn't want to spook him, the forgotten joint just burning between your fingertips." For one, you're as sharp as a tack; I can't talk to anyone else about what I can talk to you about. You're patient with the fact I'm a grumpy asshole; you like my huge art; most people can't stand to look at it, but you not only encouraged me to do it, you offer to help. You're loyal and don't ever show signs of hightailing it no matter what you see here. You're funny; you got some comebacks that I never thought would come out of Lil ol, you mamas, and you're sexy as fuck like God damn, I saw the way Bill what's his face was looking at you, and I don't blame him. I don't even know what I did to have you. I mean, look at me, I look like shit," he chuckles; you still hadn’t moved from when he began talking. " I guess what I'm saying is I know I have made you feel insecure this past; weeks, but like I'm sorry ok, and I don't want you to ever doubt how I feel about cha" he then reaches into his pocket and pulls out the ruby ring.. "so I was wondering" " oh my god! " This pulled you out of your trance. “ Are you... I what are you" " hey, can you shut up and let me finish?" " Sorry, sorry," he starts again, " I want you to know I'm in this for the long haul your mine forever, alright? So you ok with that or no?" " You nodded a huge clumsy nod feeling the tears start to form in your eyes, " I'ma need a verbal yes or no here you are crying doesn't tell me shit" " yes a thousand times yes" he slipped the ring on your finger which shockingly was a perfect fit, you jumped onto his lap and straddled him linking your hands around his neck into his long hair, he rested his hands under your butt gripping them, " I'm your forever Mr. Driftwood."
You both sat this way for a while, just taking in each other's smells and listening to each other's heartbeat; the only sound to be heard was the falling rain. "Otis?" "Hmm," he hummed, buried in your neck, nuzzling. " Can I help today?" You usually helped with the artistic side of the whole ordeal, helping him assemble, get supplies, clean the bodies. Still, you never joined in on the actual killing despite all the time you've been here, but something about today seemed like the right time to jump in. How eyes shot open, and he looked up at you with a wild surprised, yet aroused look, " you sure sugar? You don't have to know, but God damn, it's so sexy to hear you say that '' he gripped his hold on your waist, leaning forward, and kissed you slowly yet profoundly, sliding his tongue into your mouth. You moaned into his mouth, tightening the handle on his neck; you pulled back, gasping for air " yeah, I'm sure I wanna do this with you" " shit mamas, let's go then HELL YEAH'' he hoisted you up bridal style and carried you into the house down to the basement.
