someone posting about how some tiktok denizen thought the 1984 term "unperson" was some ludicrous euphemism for murder reminded me of this extraordinary 1970s British series called 1990, whose showrunner described it as "1984 plus six"

Edward Woodward is an independent reporter in a dystopian "future" fascist Britain who's working undercover for the antifa, and it was for its time very pull no punches - what reminded me is in one episode he got his citizen rights revoked and joined the "unpersons" (if I'm remembering it right)

anyway amazingly the entire series is on youtube so here's the link and I'll be freaking myself out tonight watching it all - I'm old enough to have seen it when it was on in the 70s and it was very bleak and scary and basically we're getting very close to it here now today in the UK

edit: okay I started watching this last night and honestly I don't recommend it if you're already feeling despondent about fascist Britain, because 1990 is way, waaay too similar to 2022 Britain for comfort

THE COUNTER WORKS. THIS A NUMBERS GAME.

We know where they are, who they are and where they will be. They cant keep secrets for shit. Everywhere they are, they burn shit, they break shit, they chase people down the street, they pull people out of cars and start beating on them. Don’t give these people the credit of saying they are angry or frustrated. There are real material conditions that led to this violence but these people are drinking and laughing while they chase their victims, trapped them in buildings to be burnt alive. This isn’t an expression of desperation, its a power trip emboldened by our wanker politicians and media. These people do not represent the working class. They represent the worst impulses of losers who have been told their greatness can be stolen by outsiders.

Where the counter is, they don’t get to act out those impulses on their preferred victims. Hundreds of souls stopped the fash making it to the Mercure Hotel when the cops didn’t. Counter protestors took hits but the fash never even made it to the steps. The anti-fascists are out with water and first aid kits and burner phones. They pull people to their feet when they fall down. They help victims get to cars and hospitals and homes.

If you can run away, you can counter. If you can link arms, you can counter. If you can hold someone while they cry, you can counter. If you can say no to someone whose trying to get you to do something stupid, you can counter. You might save lives. Find out where they are, outnumber them everywhere they are. Stay safe as you can.

remember how the american and british press stirred up an absolute panic about the non-violent, pro-palestine campus protests? how they endlessly slandered the students as antisemitic extremists, creating justification for the violent police crackdown that would soon follow?

compare that now to how they're covering (or not covering) the fascist pogroms in the UK, where, for the past few days, violent white supremacists mobs have been terrorizing muslims, migrants and other non-white communities, forming mobs to intimidate and violently attack anyone they perceive as non-white and non-British.

the hotel shown in the video above is now the second hotel housing asylum seekers that these fascist mobs have attempted to set fire to, and yet, the harshest words the majority of the UK press is willing to use to describe them, are "far-right rioters, "anti-immigration protesters" or, if you're the BBC, just "protesters."

again, if you compare that to the headlines they were running during the campus protests...

this goes beyond some racist "bias" in their reporting: you can draw a direct link here between the UK media's coverage of palestine, and the fascist mobs willing to burn asylum seekers alive.

obviously there are other factors at play, but the genocide denial, the portrayal of arabs and muslims as terrorists and antisemites (which again, gets projected onto britain's migrant population and asylum seekers as a whole), the overall dehumanization and othering of the palestinian people — all of this has been feeding into, and stoking up, the racism and islamophobia that's now boiling over, and erupting into nakedly fascist violence.

Ok so something I've noticed they bothers me deeply about the over Americanisation of the internet.

Britain is about to vote in an actual fascist government. There are two parties leading the race, one is led by a man who wants to stop asylum seekers at the coast, and have them taken by the royal navy to a camp in North Africa.

The other party openly and publicly stated that "Islam and nazis are the same thing" a statement that was then defended by both the party leader, AND political correspondents on our biggest news outlet, live.

Our current party leader, Rishi Sunak, mocked trans people in response to a question about Brianna Ghey's murder, also during a live interview.

Nobody is talking about this. Because it's happening in notamerica. I found out about this yesterday and I fucking live here.

Please we need to be loud about these things. We need to spread things that don't necessarily affect us. I've skipped over hundreds of posts begging me to vote in the US elections, and never once seen anybody talk about the fact that my country is about to enter a new dark age.

When we are reminded to revere Britain, what is it that we are celebrating? Is it secular? Is it Christian? Is it somehow a combination of both, like Richard Dawkins' newfound 'culturally Christian' identity? Nobody seems to know.

But consider some of the most contentious 'culture wars' so far this year, each of which has evoked a renewed rallying cry for Britishness, and one common thread rises to the surface: Islam as the enemy.

No matter how this debate is framed, and regardless of the superiority western values might try to assert over Islamic ones, the fact is that Islam has been conflated with extremism and anti-Britishness to the extent that perfectly innocuous displays of Muslimness become red flags."
