queer palestinian short film: "living alone without me"
queer short cuts is a biweekly newsletter where i share queer & trans short film recommendations. i’m featuring some of my favorite films on tumblr because why not
youtube
israel | 2 minutes | 2010 | narrative short film audio in arabic; subtitles available in arabic and english
living alone without me | عايشة مع وحدة, بلاااي, created by eli rezik, uses its less than a short runtime to tell a clear and powerful story. a man filming a video diary tells us that he is planning to propose to his girlfriend hanin after five years together. though he is foregrounded in the shot, his voice is cut off shortly into the film, and we instead hear the conversation betweeen hanin and another woman sitting far behind him, out of focus. with the plaintive sounds of the mashrou’ leila song “fasateen” in the background (i recommended a short film featuring the lebanese band mashrou’ leila earlier this year), we learn more about the women’s relationship even as we never see their faces clearly, evocative of the way they have had to hide in plain sight. - deepa's full review

shuffle your favorite playlist and post the first five songs that come up. then copy/paste this ask to your favorite mutuals 💜
Oh I'm glad this says favorite playlist and not just all songs 'cause boy that could have gone all sorts of ways. I'm going with my playlist of non-english songs since that is a playlist I listen to probably the most.
AnnenMayKantereit - Vielleicht, Vielleicht
youtube
I'm really glad Druck has made me discover them 'cause I really love their music and also how the fuck this young looking (but not actually that young) boy sings like that? I still remember the first time I saw who actually sings the songs and the image in my mind was not at all who I've seen lol.
Manu Chao - Clandestino
youtube
recently I've been really going back to Manu Chao. Idk why.
Mashrou' Leila - Fasateen
youtube
I am so angry that they broke up! I do hope that Hamed Sinno will continue to sing in some capacity because I love their voice too much and I love Mashrou' Leila's music too much and just... please give me something.
MarsMango - Nasa'n Ka, Oh Luna?
youtube
I'm not an expert but I just really love the vibes of all the Filipino music I've stumbled upon. It always has such a chill vibe.
Fujii Kaze - Shinunoga E-Wa
youtube
Ever since Siiri mentioned him all those years ago I've been obsessed. He's just so fun! Like if nothing else please listen to the whole tiny desk concert. Look how much fun he has performing.
Oh thank you for sending this my way. I love sharing music with you all.

🎸
thank u!
His Yoke Is Easy, His Burthen Is Light - Live by George Frideric Handel, performed by the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (1987). I think this is just because I have the entire Messiah liked because my family likes to listen to it around the holiday and my mom has performed the whole thing with her choir a couple times before. I do like this one, though.
Fasateen by Mashrou' Leila. Great band!
Tender by Blur. A fav...I can't help it.
Fly Me To The Moon by Frank Sinatra. I don't really like Frank Sinatra that much but I think a friend of mine likes this one, which is probably how it got in here.
Wolf by First Aid Kit. My friends and I used to like to listen to this in the car :)

I never did this one!
10. Better Than That, Sub-Radio
"Everybody's talking / and I'm feeling forgotten. / Oh, are you thinking of me?"
youtube
20. Fasateen, Mashrou' Leila
I don't know Arabic so this is more based on the music, but this part:
واتفقنا نضلنا هيك بلا أدوار وطنطنات بلا كرافات وصبحيات بلا ملايين بلا فساتين
A translation tells me means "So we agreed to stay like that without roles or talks, / without neckties or morning chats, / without millions, without dresses."
Which I do really like, it's the nice winding down of the song until the turn, "You took my hand and promised me a revolution. How could you forget me? How could you forget me?"
A helpful comment on the music video says that the context is neckties 'is like putting on airs' and morning chats refers to women coming over to the house to gossip over coffee. Essentially, markers of traditional (heterosexual) marriage in middle class Lebanese society.
I also like the parallel in the opening and closing lines: "Remember when you told me that you would marry me without money or a house," and "Remember when you told me that you intend to leave me without money or a house."
The past year, I've had a lot of regret that I never got to see them live.
youtube
30. Eden, Sub-Radio
"Too late for choices, I-i-i-i know (I-i-i-i- know) / but I'm up self-destructing again, o-o-o-oh no (o-o-o-oh no)"

Also please rec me all your good Mashrou' Leila songs I'm in need for good arabic music that isn't as old as my grandparents<3
23. Sadalsuud - Mashrou' Leila
32. Milano Good Vibes - Mahmood
for the mashrou' leila recs i would say uh. literally all of them BUT my top 5 are:
- falyakon (my beloved)
- shim el yasmine (MOST song ever)
- taxi (violin! semi depressing but who cares there's violin)
- ashabi (vocal range off the charts. see also the greenpeace/rainbow warrior version again for vocal range off the charts. idk how he does it honestly)
- raasuk (!!!!)
see also: fasateen, min el taboor, bahr (iron maiden joe song), icarus, kalam (s/he) and tayf
#neon answers#eya-trying-to-function#it is concerning how much of my 2022 playlist is uh. exclusively one artist. but we won't talk about that#ive been going through something alright#ANYWAY this is not an exhaustive list of recommendations because we'd be here all day otherwise#oh i forgot inni mneeh because again violin and it makes me want to cry#kalam i think jumps around in pronouns to give the impression that the subject is genderqueer but i don't speak enough arabic to confirm#shim el yasmine is good because i want to cry about it but also it's funny because the lyricstranslate comments are an extended debate on#whether it's written about a man or not (it is. google is free). but other than that its SUCH a good song#i need more stuff in arabic that isn't just uh#well. i'm sure you can guess#anyway thank you for the ask! <3 i am very normal about music#neon talks music#notify wrapped
