So when he sees her like this, with her face towards the window gazing at the water droplets that race to the end of window. He smiles. It was a habit of hers that hasn’t changed, and he liked that.

He could watch Ana’s back all day. Well, he could watch her all day. The world seems to get a little quiet when his eyes were set on her. So quiet in fact, he couldn’t even hear Pharah sneaking up on him.

❛ Seeing you two yearn for each other like this kills me inside ❜ She whispers softly, a warm palm squeezes the elders shoulder. It’s comforting in a way, maybe he did need that.

❛ Take her to Hawaii. She’s been talking about it for the longest, you guys can finally go dancing. ❜ A short scoff of disbelief escapes Reinhardt’s scarred lips. As if to say, what Hawaii? Pshh…

The familiar sound of Reinhardt causes Ana to snap out of her trance, weary hues would set their gaze on her daughter and beloved companion. A sweet smile creeps onto her lips.

❛ Gossiping about me I see? ❜ Pharah takes this as a queue to take her leave, she throws an expectant gaze towards Reinhardt and gives her goodbyes to each of them. ❛ Ah, no… She mentioned something about… Hawaii. ❜

Ana could only chuckle lowly. Pharah was a smart girl, she knew. That was her daughter after all… and she was a persistent one. Stubborn even. And she could practically sense the matter of the conversation that conspired between the two. So she nods on, expecting more from him, a better explanation even.

But he doesn’t, instead… he grabs a hold of her palms. A stark contrast to his, mind you, Ana’s complexion was olive, scattered with some freckles from this summer. Smooth, so smooth. Her hands practically dwarfed his.

While his hands engulfed hers, pale (although a bit tanner from the summer.) Weather—beaten and calloused from the elements, as well as his vigorous workout routine. And much more rough.

Despite these differences, they fit like a puzzle piece. Reinhardt takes the lead, a palm cradles the small of her back. Swaying in unison, ❛ It’s not Hawaii— but it is a dance… I— ❜ She shushes him before he can even continue. ❛ This is just perfect. We’ll make do, we always have. Always will. ❜

And she’s right, she knows it and he knows it.

So they dance that whole day, their music is the rain. The rain that patters against smooth glass. Nature paints a picture of them, against the water colored aquamarines, the muted greys and the blotted turquoises.

Dark storm clouds begin to roll in, filling their music with the low howl of wind with the reverberation of thunder. The sound of Reinhardt’s heart keeps her at bay, their breath mingles together… it’s beginning to feel like the night in Gibraltar, in the command center.

Maybe he was right, maybe they were still foolish. Because the way Ana’s chest beats in her chest feels foolish, the way they spare each other longing glances felt foolish. Yet, they still dance.

Farah watches from afar, she snaps a quick picture. Something to show her mother later on of course, she would love it.

“Knock knock, gorgeous.”

Farah glances up from where she’s playing a game on her phone to see Tanner leaning in her doorway.

“How long have you been here?” she asks, locking her phone and setting it down on her bed beside her.

“About an hour, I’m heading out now,” he answers, and she rolls her eyes and tuts at him.

“And you didn’t tell me because…?”

“Because Blondey’s had me in the training room the whole time.”

She casts her eyes over him, only just noticing that his hair’s a little messier than usual and there’s a light sheen of sweat covering his face.

“Have fun?”

He smirks and gives a small shrug, “I got to kick his ass so, yeah.”

“You could stick around for a while, you know? You don’t have to leave as soon as he’s done with you every time.”

“Not ready to see the end of me yet, huh?”

“You’re just about the only fun person who comes here, so not quite,” she answers with a heavy sigh, glancing back up at him with a slight pout on her face.

He nods and steps into her room, making his way over to sit down beside her on her bed.

“I feel you, you might be the best person I’ve met since being in this town.”

Her face brightens and she elbows him lightly in the ribs. “Tanner Drake, did you just give me a compliment?”

“Don’t get used to it,” he grins at her.

“What about Morgan? From what I hear you’ve been having quite a lot of fun with her.”

“From what you hear?”

Farah lifts both hands to tap her ears and winks at him, “I’ve heard a lot. Some of it’s quite frankly disturbing.”

His grin widens and he shrugs, completely unashamed. Somewhat proud of himself instead, it would seem.

“That’s not fun,” he points out, and she frowns at him.

“So what is it?”

“Fucking.” He answers pointedly, and she wrinkles her nose at him. “She’s a bitch when she’s got her clothes on, though.”

She narrows her eyes and points a finger at him, “you watch what you say about her, mister.”

“She’s a bitch to me when she’s got her clothes on,” he clarifies.

“You’re a prick to her when you’ve got your clothes on.”

Tanner pauses for a minute before shrugging again, “touché. It’s beside the point though, I like you better.”

She grins and leans over to nudge him with her shoulder. “And I didn’t even have to get naked.”

She knows that this, whatever it is, between Tanner and Morgan is more than what either of them are willing to admit that it is, but who is she to meddle?

Who is she kidding, of course she’s going to meddle. But there’s a time and a place, and when he’s in a relatively good mood after an hour long training session with Adam is not the time.

“Well, come on. Since you’re being generous with the compliments today, let me have ‘em.”

“Are you fishing?”

“Absolutely. Tell me how amazing I am.”

He laughs and throws an arm around her shoulders, giving her a light squeeze as he answers, “you’re just as amazing as you think you are, Farah.”

She cannot for the life of her imagine why Adam and Nate seem to dislike Tanner so much. At least not until she remembers that he frequently goes out of his way to antagonise both of them as often as he can. Morgan too. She may be the only person that he doesn’t deliberately try to piss off, and she’s not exactly sure why but she’s definitely not going to question it. She’s heard the stories, she’s seen the uncertain looks Adam and Nate have given each other when Tanner starts to get angry. She has no desire to deliberately put herself on the wrong side of him for no good reason.

Maybe she would be a little more annoyed about the way he treats and talks about Morgan, if not for the fact that she says much worse about him and at times treats him appallingly herself. They’re as bad as each other, but for some reason it seems to work for them and even somehow seems to increase their attraction for each other, so Farah sees no reason to get into the middle of that either.

“Damn right I am, and I’ll throw hands at anyone who says otherwise,” she agrees with a determined nod, and he raises an eyebrow at her.

“Will you?”

“Well, no. But that’s what I have you for.”

He nods and holds a fist out for her to bump before getting to his feet, straightening down the front of his jacket.

“Anytime,” he agrees before heading to the door.

“You’re not so bad either, you know,” she calls after him, and he turns to face her.

“Not so bad?” he repeats incredulously. “A glowing endorsement.”

“What do you want from me? You’re a dick to everyone else, saying that you’re as amazing as me might be too much of a stretch.”

“Fuck you,” he flips her off playfully and she wrinkles her nose at him again.

“No, thank you.”

“I wasn’t offering.”

“Sure you weren’t. You wish you could get all this,” she gestures down to herself with both hands and he fake gags, holding one hand over his mouth and one to his stomach as though he’s suddenly fallen ill.

“Please,” is the only response she gets from him before he turns and leaves her alone again.

He really is a dick. But he might also be one of her favourite people, not that she’d ever tell him that. His ego’s big enough as it is.

I’m really enjoying fire meet gasoline I love seeing more canon divergent au’s and ocs that are detectives. Tanner is such an interesting character and I like how he’s a bit of a dick! keeps things interesting and I’m really enjoying the banter and chemistry between him and Morgan

on of my favorite exchanges was probably this one from chapter two:

"Do I get a say?" He pipes up once they fall silent, and everyone in the room glares at him. Except for Farah, who lets out a light chuckle.

"No." Agent Langford replies, pointing a finger at him as though scolding a child for eating cookies before dinner. "You took it upon yourself to travel here without permission. While you are here, you might as well make yourself useful."

"Naughty boy." Morgan drawls quietly from beside him, and he glances over to see her smirking at him. He leans down closer to her, so close that his lips just barely brush against her ear when he whispers.

"You have no idea, sunshine."

Morgan can handle physical pain. Not quite as well as she has people convinced she can, but it needs to be bordering on agonising to really slow her down too much.

Somehow though, something inside of her aches as she watches Tanner heading for the door of the bar, his arm slung around some random girl's shoulders. Tall, blonde, legs for days as the saying goes. Not the most attractive human Morgan's ever laid eyes on, she's sure to point that much out to herself. But then she doubts that Tanner's going to be paying much attention to the woman's face tonight. Not that any of that has anything to do with the painful throb radiating through her body. She can't even tell exactly where it hurts, only that it almost takes her breath away.

And she doesn’t understand it at all.

It only gets worse when the pair stop before they reach the door and Tanner leans in to speak into the girl's ear before slowly kissing over her neck, his hands roaming all over her lower back and ass.

She wants to look away but she can't, for some reason unknown to her she's hyper focused on his hands and his face and the way he pulls the girl's hips against his before they turn and head out into the night, disappearing from her view.

If breathing were necessary for her she feels that she may have passed out by now, every single breath catching in her throat and making the pain worse. She's even worried for a split second that she's about to do something stupid. Like crying. This random pain is that bad.

And she still doesn't know why. Maybe she's sick somehow. Maybe-

"Are you alright?" Nate's voice breaks her out of her dazed state and she snaps her attention over to him with a frown.

"Why wouldn't I be?"

"Tanner just left with a girl," he points out, gesturing towards the door. As though that explains anything.

"And?"

"Well, I thought you and Tanner-"

"Fucked," she interrupts before he can suggest that they're an actual couple like Farah insists on constantly doing, "we fucked."

He nods, apparently trying to look sympathetic, she guesses. But she swears she can see a glimmer of ironic amusement in his eyes.

"More than once," he offers, the way he's talking making it seem as though he's trying to imply something.

"Yeah, he's good in bed," she answers with a shrug, her tone suggesting it should be obvious and giving him a confused look before glancing back towards the door despite herself.

They're still gone.

As though there was a chance Tanner had changed his mind and come back. As though she even wants him to change his mind and come back. Because why the hell would she want that? Why does she care who he screws? She inwardly confirms to herself what she already knows - she doesn't care - and then downs the rest of her beer before getting to her feet.

The movement draws the attention of Adam and Farah as well, all three of them now looking at her in apparent surprise at the possibility of her leaving early and alone.

Farah's eyes scan the bar before realisation dawns on her face and she hurriedly stands up as well. "Are you leaving? I'll come with you."

Morgan hesitates, brow furrowing further at Farah, "why would you do that?"

"I just thought…" Farah trails off, glancing in Nate's direction with uncertainty before continuing, "I thought you might not want to be alone."

Morgan just shrugs, pulling her jacket from where she's draped it over the back of her chair and shrugging it on as she turns and heads for the door.

Maybe Tanner's still outside. Maybe he changed his mind after all. Or, what if he's just still out there making out with the girl he'd left with? What if he's got her up against the wall just around the corner away from the street lights. He'd do something like that, she's sure of it.

But what the hell is she thinking? Why does she care?

She doesn't. Let him fuck some bimbo out in the open, in the freezing cold. Some ugly bimbo, at that. Ugly and giggling and stupid, not his type and no good for him at all.

What the hell is wrong with her?

"I didn't realise you liked him that much," she'd almost forgotten Farah was beside her, and she scoffs at the entirely incorrect observation before lighting a cigarette.

"Who?" she knows who, but if she admits that she knows Farah will take it as confirmation that it's true.

"Tanner."

"He wishes I liked him at all."

"Well you must like him a little," Morgan glares over at her and Farah shrugs, a tiny smirk playing on her lips. "I think you like him a bit more than a little though."

"You think wrong," Morgan replies dryly, confusion washing over her again when the mention of his name forces into her head images of what he might be doing with the girl right now and the ache hits her again.

This time it's very obviously in her chest, squeezing at her heart and making her lungs feel heavy.

Can vampires have heart attacks? Asthma attacks? What on earth is happening to her?

"You sure?" Farah pushes, dragging an irritated growl from the back of Morgan's throat.

"I think I'd know."

"Would you, though?"

"Yeah."

"But would you really?" Farah's full on grinning at her when she looks back over, though the cheer or entertainment or whatever has gotten into her doesn't seem to be catching on.

"If you have something to say, just say it."

"I just did."

The conversation draws to a close at that. Morgan doesn't even know what Farah's implying, let alone know how to respond to it.

The whole night has given her a headache, so much so that as quickly as she drops her finished cigarette to the ground there's another between her lips and she's lighting up again.

She hadn't wanted to go out anyway, but she didn't fancy hanging about the warehouse on her own either. Then the nauseating sight that was Nate and Lucas fawning over each other until Tina had dragged the detective away, and then Tanner had shown up.

And now? Now she's getting sick somehow, or her heart's giving out, or whatever this stupid, sporadic chest pain means. And the only way Farah can think to help her is to speak in riddles about Tanner fucking Drake.

She's done, and the sooner she can get back to her room and ignore it all the better. She might even try to sleep tonight despite not having been tired in the slightest earlier in the evening. And hopefully when she wakes up (providing her heart or lungs don't stop functioning overnight, of course) this irritating pain in her chest will be gone.

How to Take a Portrait of America

Times Insider explains who we are and what we do, and delivers behind-the-scenes insights into how our journalism comes together.

Last December, Tanner Curtis, a Politics photo editor at The Times covering the 2020 U.S. presidential election, needed a break from the candidates. He mentioned to Eve Lyons, a photo editor for Styles, that he’d love to collaborate on a project for The Look, a visual Styles column that examines identity and culture.

They got to talking, and they landed on a project that would take place on a road trip across America — touching on politics, but in a less direct, more atmospheric way. They brought in another Styles editor, Bonnie Wertheim, to hone the idea and saw their seedling pitch grow limbs, from one road trip to four, each produced by its own photographer and reporter. The pairs would explore separate themes — patriotism, tradition, community and youth — and their routes would lead them through states with political clout in the next election.

The editors wanted storytellers on the road who were familiar with their regions. The photographer Daniel Arnold’s Milwaukee upbringing, he said, meant that while documenting patriotism in the Midwest with the writer Jacqui Shine, he “wasn’t going to be some weird interloper making a snap judgment about what goes on.” They began at a flag manufacturer in Oak Creek, Wis., and ended at a gun club in Columbia, Mo.

Mr. Curtis said it felt significant to have the photographer Andre Wagner and the writer Hanif Abdurraqib capture different aspects of community from Baltimore to Hilton Head Island, S.C.; they’ve both covered black identity in America before. And the Los Angeles-based journalists Jessica Lehrman and Walter Thompson-Hernández were natural fits to document youth culture throughout the Southwest, from a Junior R.O.T.C. camp in San Diego to pageant competitors in El Paso.

“I knew our country was diverse, but I didn’t know just how diverse it was,” Ms. Lyons said. Mr. Curtis was surprised by some of the narratives and characters too, citing in particular Ms. Shine and Mr. Arnold’s story about Matt Russell, a fifth-generation farmer in rural Iowa who, with his husband, has become a provider of refuge for teenagers with troubled pasts.

Pursuing the topic of tradition, Farah Al Qasimi and Liana Aghajanian snaked along the Northeast. They stopped in 20 cities in two weeks, beginning in Hamtramck, Mich., known for its dense immigrant population. Ms. Al Qasimi said she learned a lot on the road: For example, a person’s body can, in fact, begin to reject mozzarella sticks and diner pies after a period of time. Rupert Holmes’s anthem “Escape” (you’ve heard it: “If you like piña coladas …”) might be the most played song on the radio, along with “working-people hymns of the ’80s.” And, more seriously, “People generally feel very unheard,” she said. “At times, I felt like we were their unpaid therapists. There was a lot of emotional labor involved.”

Not everybody was so open. They were in Ohio during the Dayton shooting, and as a pair of Middle Eastern women, they said they raised some eyebrows in the rust belt. Once at a gas station in Strausstown, Pa., Ms. Al Qasimi read a sign: “United States Terrorist Hunting Permit.” There, she received what she described as “the absolute worst, ugliest look, just the worst stare-down.”

“We had none of that friction,” said Mr. Arnold, who recalled speaking with Ms. Al Qasimi about these episodes on the road. “Jacqui and I are Midwestern white people. We could be invisible.”

While Ms. Lyons said they had to cull images significantly, the impact of the stories remains striking. Tracy Ma, a visual editor for the Styles desk, worked on the design online, and reined in her often maximalist style in service of the project: “I wanted to have a minimal footprint,” she said. Tala Safie created a cohesive design for the print version, in papers on Sunday.

The project represents “a tiny slice of America,” Ms. Lyons said, but she hopes it gives people a better idea of what America looks like as it enters 2020. “We’re choosing a president for everybody, so it’s good to know what people are thinking and feeling. ”

On their last stop in the Northeast, Ms. Al Qasimi said, they ventured into a forest in Canterbury, N.H., for a church service — her first. She was tired. It would be a mostly older, white congregation, and her expectations for mutual understanding were low. But “in the middle of the prayer,” she said, “I started crying.” Everyone was remarkably caring and compassionate. Suddenly, it was her turn to confront her bias. “We’re all really worried. It’s rightfully a time of heightened anxiety,” she said. “I hope people will realize that they have more in common than they think.”

Colonizing slowships, multidimensional hideaways, decaying alien empires, and a breakaway Mars feature in this week’s newest science fiction releases
