Another space one today, sorry. Not a lot of politically friendly events happened on October 7th. Anyways, on this date in the year 1959, soviet space probe Luna 3 (the one in the picture) got the first picture of the far side of the moon! Although the quality was horrible (the one in the bg is not the first picture) It was still an important advancement!

Chinese Chang’e 6 en route to Earth with samples from moon’s far side
China’s lunar spacecraft Chang’e 6 unfurled the country’s red-and-gold flag on the far side of the moon for the first time before part of the vehicle set off early Tuesday morning with rock and soil samples to be delivered to Earth, Chinese media reported.
The Chang’e-6 probe travelled into space last month and its landing module landed on the far side of the moon on Sunday. The vehicle lifted off at 7:38 Beijing time on Tuesday morning, its engine burning for about six minutes as it entered a preset orbit around the moon, the China National Space Administration said.
The agency said the Chang’e 6 survived a high-temperature test on the lunar surface and obtained samples through drilling and surface collection before stowing them in a container inside the probe’s lifting device as planned.
The container will be transferred to the descent capsule, which is scheduled to return to Earth in the deserts of China’s Inner Mongolia region around June 25.
The small flag, which the agency said was made of special composite materials, appeared on a retractable arm deployed from the side of the lunar lander and was not placed on the lunar soil, according to an animation of the mission released by the agency.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying wrote on X:
“Mission accomplished! An unprecedented feat in human lunar exploration history!”

How well do you know the far side of the moon? Which One 29.
Crater Chaplygin, Mare Moscoviense and Crater Tsiolkvskiy are three interesting features on the far side of the Moon. They have some similarities and differences that can be compared and contrasted.
Crater Chaplygin and Crater Tsiolkvskiy are both large impact craters with terraced inner walls and central peaks. They are about the same size, with diameters of 123 km and 185 km respectively . However, Crater Chaplygin is located to the southeast of the huge walled plain Mendeleev, while Crater Tsiolkvskiy is situated near the equator in a region of highlands. Crater Chaplygin has a smooth interior plain with few small craters, while Crater Tsiolkvskiy has a dark floor with patches of bright material and several secondary craters.
Mare Moscoviense is a lunar mare that sits in the Moscoviense basin. It is one of the very few maria on the far side of the Moon. Unlike Crater Chaplygin and Crater Tsiolkvskiy, which are circular in shape, Mare Moscoviense has an irregular outline that follows the basin rim. It is also much larger than the two craters, with a diameter of 276 km. Mare Moscoviense is clearly centered within a large impact basin, while Crater Chaplygin and Crater Tsiolkvskiy are not associated with any obvious basins . Mare Moscoviense has a lower elevation than both the outer basin floor and the farside highlands, and it also has a gravitational high at its center .
In summary, Crater Chaplygin, Mare Moscoviense and Crater Tsiolkvskiy are three moon features that share some common characteristics as well as some distinctive ones. They are all located on the far side of the Moon, but they differ in their size, shape, location, elevation and composition.

China’s Chang’e-6 landed on far side of moon
China’s Chang’e-6 lunar lander successfully landed on the far side of the moon on Sunday.
The Chang’e-6 lunar lander successfully landed on the far side of the moon on Sunday morning Beijing time. The landing is an important step for an ambitious mission that could help realise the country’s ambition to send astronauts to the moon.
China’s National Space Administration said the Chang’e-6 probe has landed in the South Pole-Aitken Basin, where it will begin collecting samples from the lunar surface. The landing marks the second time a mission has successfully reached the back side of the moon. China first accomplished this historic feat in 2019 with the Chang’e-4 probe.
Therefore, if all goes according to plan, the mission may become a key milestone in China’s quest to become the dominant space power in the face of growing competition. It began on 3 May and is expected to last 53 days.
China’s most complex robotic lunar mission to date. The unmanned mission aims to bring samples from the back side of the moon to Earth for the first time. China aims to land astronauts on the moon by 2030 and begin building a research base at its south pole, a region believed to contain water ice.
In addition, samples collected by the Chang’e-6 descent module may provide key information about the origin and evolution of the Moon, Earth and the solar system. The mission provides important data and technical practice to advance China’s lunar ambitions, experts said.
