Announcement: Hail the Sloth
Tumblr media
Greetings Investigators!
I've got some exciting news to share with you all today regarding the development of Highrook.
OuterSloth is an indie game development fund created by Innersloth, developers of Among Us. OuterSloth is already funding seven projects, including new games by the developers of Venba, Thirsty Suitors, and I Am Your Beast.
And today, I'm delighted to share that Outersloth have also decided to fund The Horror at Highrook!
This is fantastic news as it's been a rough few years for indies, well, for everyone in the industry really. The Horror at Highrook actually arose as a result of another larger project deal falling through, and it's been a real passion project of mine that had been bubbling away for a few years.
I sent a build of the game to OuterSloth, and it was such a refreshing experience chatting with them. After their success with Among Us, it's reassuring to see a successful indie game re-investing in their own field, especially when the industry seems so unstable. It gives me hope that things might be changing for the better!
I'm making good progress with development, and I'm closing in on the last remaining chapters before polishing begins!
We'll have more on that sooner than you might think, but in the meantime you may wish to join the Highrook Discord and give us a follow on Bluesky for more updates!
Discord Invite: https://discord.gg/XwFcswu4YZ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/highrookhorror.bsky.social
Will get another one of these written soon!
Cheers,
Tom

Hey y'all! Here is Efan's quick rundown and review of almost all the cool games I played this year, as well as my Steam in Review!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. Darkest Dungeon
Tumblr media
I've been playing this game for nearly ten years, and I finally beat it this year. Not a 2023 release, but a huge milestone for myself. After a terrible year before it, I made it a goal to face my fears and beat this game. Lo' and behold, I did, and it's one of my own personal gaming accomplishments. It's solidified as the best turn based game I've ever played, but it does have its late-game issues, specifically with the Crimson Court maps and the final dungeon maps. It's just absurd tbh. However, this is one of my favorite games of all time, if not my favorite, and it's a must have for horror fans, HP Lovecrft fans, and turn based game fans. 9.7/10
2. Sun Haven
Tumblr media
A wonderful and cute farming sim that scratched an itch no other could scratch. Its characters are fun, the music is solid, the graphics are very bright and fantastical, and the combat was simple yet kinda fun. I really loved the progression in this game too. It still has its issues, such as the late game (it may have been fixed because this game was in early access) and some of the utility of the workbenches you can use. All in all, a very solid farming sim (and just life sim in general tbh) if you like a little bit of fantasy mixed in. 9/10
3. Halls of Torment
Tumblr media
My favorite Survivor game. The music, aesthetics, progression, characters, and maps are all different enough to keep you coming back for more. As I am disabled, these games are actually super fun to play because I only have to play with one hand. It was in early access when I played it heavily, so it had some issues like the handling of inventory, some balance issues, and feature creep issues, but they may have been fixed now. 9.3/10
4. Cassette Beasts
Tumblr media
A must-play monster battler with an amazing plot, an incredible soundtrack, interesting monsters, and great characters for the most part. If you've been really wanting a game that is reminiscent of Pokemon colleseum but also want that 2d love of the Black and White games, this is a must have. It does have some balance issues (again, early access game when I played), but other than that and maybe some performance issues that are probably fixed by now, it was an incredible game that made me want a 2d Pokemon game more than ever. 9/10
5. Roboquest
Tumblr media
A fantastic FPS roguelike game with great gunplay, movement, art direction, and music too. Each weapon feels pretty unique, it has melee weapons (wish there were more though) and a progression system that's really cool. It plays like if Doom Eternal had a kid with Borderlands, and I think plays a bit better than any other RANGED FPS roguelike/lite that I've played. I will say the difficulty settings are really cool, but I think they are a little too enticing due to game balance as of 1.0 due to progression being a bit of a grind. I think that having different endings for each difficulty might be a cool idea, each as satisfying as the other, but I know that can be a pain to develop. 9/10
6. Mortal Sin
Tumblr media
A beautifully dark and trippy mostly melee FPS roguelike that takes the intensity of DOOM and the melee weapons of Elderborn and drenches it in a slow-mo filled, heavy swinging fun time. It's definitely the most FUN game this year as I've been craving an FPS melee roguelike for a while. It accomplishes this and then some with pretty cool progression that adds some variety to each game. The art direction reminds me of a more purple and red MORK BORG (fellow TTRPGers rejoice) and I LOVE it. The only issues to me are that the story and lore are a bit boring and lacking, but again it's in early access, so it has time to cook. 9.5/10
7. And last, my game of the year, LUNACID by @stylishkira
Tumblr media
What a gorgeous game all around. The music has probably the most atmosphere out of any indie game I've played outside of Darkest Dungeon. Its levelling system is accessible but fun, you can create your own character with their own name and profile picture which I think is SO cool (Mortal Sin should totally do this if it's not too much of a copy). The combat is really fun and the sound design is probably second, once again, to Darkest Dungeon. It was an absolutely magical experience playing this game, and an experience I don't think I'll ever forget. I do think, however, that the ending feels really really rushed, and that sullied my experience a little bit, and the bosses are pretty unbalanced because you can just spam all of your health potions and tank the bosses, but the experience leading up to the ending is amazing. Also, I know the true ending is purposely a little complex, but tbh, if the goal was to have the "true" endings similar to the Souls games, having the final climactic boss (which I won't spoil, but is really cool) be the core of the normal ending, paired with alternate endings WITH that really cool final boss I think, might make the experience a bit more satisfying. It's already kinda implemented, but I loved this game so much that the standard ending just kinda felt....empty. Don't let these critiques stop you from playing this game, however. It's one of my favorites of all time, and I only give these critiques because I love this game so much. This is a MUST PLAY, and for the price, it's an absolute steal and should be priced up, imo. I cannot wait to see where the direction of possible King's Field style games come, because I am THIRSTY for more! 9.6/10
Annnddddddd that's it! Some great other games I played this year were the Demon Souls remake (9.2/10) Shadow of the Colossus (9.3/10), and Bloodborne (for probably the 30th time, and that's no joke, 9.8/10), and Quake (9.8/10).

A Mads poll with a difference!
A poll of Mads Mikkelsen movies where the selection is based on range of factors, including but not limited to: genre, writer/director, country of release, date of release and 🎉vibes 🎉
Some of the movies may fit in more than one category, so vibes have mostly informed those decisions.
Round One:
Choose your fave!
Time to venture into some franchises...
Casino Royale is the 2006 reboot of the James Bond franchise, based on Ian Fleming's first Bond novel, of the same name. Mads plays antagonist Le Chiffre (whose name Jean Duran was later revealed in the video game of the movie), a private banker who has lost his client's money and is trying to recover it.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is a 2016 movie, the second Star Wars movie set outside the main Skywalker stories, it follows the theft of the plans of the Death Star which leads into the Skywalker timeline's first movie - A New Hope. Mads plays Galen Erso, designer of the death star and father of the protagonist, Jyn Erso.
Doctor Strange is a 2016 Marvel movie, the first focusing on Dr Stephen Strange. Mads plays antagonist Kaecilius, a master of the mystical arts who comes up against Strange after breaking from the teachings of the Ancient One and becoming a follower of Dormammu, ruler of the dark dimension.
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is a 2022 movie in the Fantastic Beast franchise, the money grab following the popular Harry Potter series. Mads plays Grindelwald, Dumbledore's gay lover (because remember Dumbledore is gay now, there was a tweet).
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is the 2023 latest instalment of the Indiana Jones franchise, set in 1969 and follows Indy trying to locate a powerful artefact before Nazi-turned-NASA scientist Voller - played by Mads.
Lots of baddies here, even the ones that are misunderstood!

🎲, 📖, ✨?
🎲 A game designer I want to work with someday
You're really putting me on the spot here, Josh! There are too many to count. I'd love to collaborate with you, or Rae Nedjadi, or Jay Dragon, or Felix Isaacs, or Spencer Campbell, or Avery Alder, or Kayla Dice, or Keganexe, or kramstack, or Grant Howitt, or the folks over at Soulmuppet, or Caro Ascerion...the list goes on! I've been so inspired digging into the indie design scene and blown away by the fantastically talented people here - I am like a leetol baby in this space, happy to learn and grow and maybe someday get to write stuff that inspires other folks also!
📖 My favorite class or playbook from a game.
the Oath of Wood from GilaRPGs recent lumen 2.0 foray, Hunt.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's a fun self-enclosed diceless game where you play a doomed order of knights on a quest to slay a fearsome beast. Succeed, and your order is saved. Fail, and you perish and pass beyond memory. The Oath of Wood gives you a means of communing with the Wood you travel through.
✨ A game I wish more people were talking about
House by Marn S. If you're a House of Leaves or unreality/weird spiraling horror fan, you need to play this game.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX Episodes 106-107 Subbed (Finalized)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Previously: Episode 105 Subbed [Finalized])
(Check out my Subbed!GX Stream Masterpost!)
TURN-106: Judai and Johan of the Gem Beast Deck
A new school term has started at the Duel Academia. Invited to the Academia as transfer students and becoming new friends are the Academy Champions known as Amon, O'Brien, Crocodile, and a mysterious boy--along with one Professor Cobra. Meanwhile, atop the school building rooftop, Judai meets a boy who can see Spirits--who turns out to be the "mysterious boy," Johan. Cobra proposes an Exhibition Match, pitting Judai against Johan. Johan turns out to be a duelist in control of the rare Monsters known as the Gem Beasts.
TURN-107: The Neo-Spacians VS the Gem Beasts
Johan summons one Gem Beast after another, from his Amethyst Cat to his Topaz Tiger. Judai also has Neo-Spacian Flare Scarab and Neos perform a Contact Fusion to take them on with his Flare Neos. Then, Johan destroys Judai's Field Magic and activates a new Field Magic, Ancient City of Rainbows -- Rainbow Ruins, sending his Neo-Spacian back to his deck. Seeing these skillful attacks, Ed begins to speak of the unknown relationship between Johan and his Gem Beasts.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
...so, didn't mean to let these take about a month and a half since 105 was all finalized, but heremst we be *sips indie coffee*
Season 3 gets into full swing with these two episodes as it starts us off with a hint of our upcoming big bad right off the jump (RIP Hiromi Tsuru, your Yubel is still fantastic), then introduces us to the big foreign players we'll be seeing quite a bit of going forward. Judai has a nightmare taking place in an area similar to his vision with Saiou--which I'm sure is unrelated to anything--and then opening ceremonies ensue before we're introduced properly to our new transfer students, and the Ancient Roman lore around Johan's Gem Beasts which was pretty cool to include; Judai and Johan then have a fun duel together as we see the Gem Beasts in action facing Judai's Neo-Spacians. These episodes also see the debut of some of my favorite OST tracks from Season 3, like Fervent Duel (used really well in 107) and A Pinch here. Ed coming in for 107 and giving us the background on Johan from Pegasus, featuring cameos of Dark Yugi, Kaiba, and Jounouchi (from the Warriors and Unstopping Overflowing Feelings OP/EN in DM--these nods were kept in the dub, so it was the first time those particular shots of Kaiba and Jou were used in the West), as we learn that he gifted the Gem Beasts to Johan during a tournament in Europe was good, and I still love Johan's little fakeout at the end with the Rainbow Dragon he doesn't actually have yet. A fun duo of episodes with a fun, low-stakes duel that we should enjoy while we can.
Quick side-notes for the dub, but want to take a sec to shout out Jim's dub VA who perfectly nailed his Australian voice for the guy, and who I hope comes back if we're ever lucky enough to get a more accurate GX redub (though I think he was recast in DL? But still sounded pretty good). Dub!Yubel, though... I'm still baffled by the decision made with that voice, and I'm glad they eventually went with a better voice in BBT. 107 also saw them make a bunch of--I assume--time cuts, including most of the cold open which featured our first in-series look at Martin, and other shots as Cobra set up his evil lair in the old SAL lab (continuity!), but also the ending shot as Cobra looks at the duel energy he collected and comments on their impressive duel--most of those are fair as far as time cuts go, though I think the ending scene should've been kept. It's also interesting that, with Johan's southern accent being a thing in the dub (which has grown on me, though I like his later no-accent voice more), that they had Pegasus say the tournament he went to with him happened "down south;" according to a comment on the Crunchyroll upload, the venue's the "All-England Lawn Tennis Club where the Grand Slam Wimbledon" happens in the UK? lol
Animation error-wise, there were just over a handful that I picked up on in each episode that I went ahead and fixed up--mostly quality-of-watching ones along with a couple of card errors, and I also translated the bio on Amon that O'Brien hands to Cobra early in episode 106. As always, details below the cut if interested, along with Translation Notes for the bio.
Anywho, enjoy! The next two-parter features our fiery boy O'Brien, and with some really nice art/animation in 109 that I always love to revisit; I'll begin work on that once I finalize some special side work that I should hopefully get to post about soon, too, though I'll also be going back to episode 1 to fix up a card error I forgot to tackle, lol. Stay tuned!
Fixes/Edits! (106)
Early in the episode, Professor Cobra enters O'Brien's room on the ship and asks who else would be visiting him; he hands him a bio pointing to one Amon Garam. As detailed here, I translated Amon's bio in this shot, first compiling a full image to edit from its later appearances in 111 and 121, then keyframing it into the rotating zooming-out shot that happens here with AfterEffects and Sony Vegas. (The full text of the bio is in that detailed post)
In the next shot, Cobra asks if Amon came to see O'Brien, noting that he seems to be a meddler but suggests that he doesn't pay him any mind, turning to pass the bio back to him--as he does so, a few quick animation errors happen: 1) Cobra's face/mouth glitch for a few quick frames as he shifts his face into a smile (likely his current face being left over his moving face behind it); 2) the bio page in his hand jitters a bit in the frames leading up to his turning towards O'Brien; and 3) once O'Brien's holding the paper and moves it down, there are a quick few frames where a small part of his hair (the one bang on his left) is missing before it comes back. As detailed here, I edited in my translation to the bio while Cobra's holding it and as he passes it back, masking in Cobra and the rest of the frame over it for blending, while also fixing those errors for the Japanese scene by holding Cobra's face pre-glitch over the glitched frames, editing the Amon bio so it's steady throughout, and masking in O'Brien's full hair bang over the frames where it's cut short.
Later, as the Judai/Johan duel gets underway, Judai and Johan give their "Duel!" shouts and draw their hands, but a few things happen as they jump into a split-screen for it: 1) Judai moves a frame before Johan starts to slide in on his split; 2) once the screen pans down to their decks as they draw, the split-screen border seems to have been drawn in oddly, as part of Judai's side ends up just on top of the border (also seems to be slightly cut off in width halfway down); and 3) as they split apart, more of Judai seems to have made it to the left of his split's border. I fixed each one in Vegas by first sliding in Johan a frame earlier as Judai moves, then enhancing the split-screen border a bit to cover up what ends up on top of it and to its left as they split out (I generally try to avoid making redone borders that much bigger, but thought it was the only way to cleanly/consistently fix that).
After Johan plays Gem Beast Emerald Turtle, we cut to the Overseas Champions watching on, with Jim whistling before Amon expresses his surprise at the Gem Beasts--but a coloring error happens in the rapid pan from Jim to Amon, with both having odd coloring spots. A quick fix in Vegas by redoing the panning using a frame of Jim post-whistle and a frame of Amon before his mouth moves.
After Judai summons Neos, Johan laments that he can't ask for his autograph while they're dueling, but notes that he was waiting for him to summon a new Monster--Judai slides in on a split-screen to question that, but a few things happen: 1) Johan starts moving to make room for his split a frame before he does so; 2) a coloring error happens as Judai and Johan then split apart before Johan activates Triggered Summon (more noticeable on Johan), and 3) Judai's uneven slide-out leads to it taking a frame longer than Johan's to get offscreen. Fixed each one in Vegas by sliding Judai in a frame earlier as Johan moves, masking in Judai and Johan's pre-slide-out splits over the frames as they slide out to fix the coloring error, and making Judai's slide-out match Johan's by masking one frame in earlier.
[continued below, just split thanks to stupid text-block character limits]
(6) A bit later, after Johan talks about not having any destruction cards in his deck so he can see his opponents going all-out, Judai notes how neat he finds him; as they split apart and Johan tells him to bring out his new Monster (due to Triggered Summon's effect), there's a quick frame where the border is missing on Judai's split. Quick fix in Vegas as I just added it back on by duplicating the one on Johan's and touching it up as needed.
(7) As Judai then summons Neo-Spacian Gran Mole, we see it pop up in front of him, but Judai has black rectangles on his Disk where Gran Mole, Neos, and Aqua Dolphin should be. Fixed using AfterEffects to slap on proxies for each in one frame, which I then took into Sony Vegas and shook around position-wise frame by frame to add it to the full shot (thankfully, this was just shaking around and not zooming in or out lol).
(8) During the preview for 107, we see Judai on a split-screen jumping as Johan declares an attack with his Amethyst Cat, but as they slide apart, two quick things happen: 1) there's a quick frame where there's just black behind them (and Johan's split's border isn't as glowy as Judai's), and 2) some of Johan's split's border hangs on for two frames after he and Judai slide offscreen. Fixed each in Vegas for 107 proper first, then applied the fixes here, masking in Amethyst Cat behind Judai and Johan as they split apart, then masking in some of the whooshing background behind Amethyst Cat to cover up the remaining bit of Johan's split border for those two frames.
Fixes/Edits! (107)
After Judai summons Flare Scarab, he has it do a Contact Fusion with Neos for Flare Neos, but as he declares Flare Scarab's name for it, we see that the cards on his Disk--for Gran Mole, Neos, and Flare Scarab--are flipped upside-down. Fixed in AfterEffects first by applying proxies as Judai swings his Disk around, then on one frame during the zoom-out on Flare Scarab after he moves--I then took the latter frame into Sony Vegas, where I redid the zoomout on it for the whole shot, masking in Flare Scarab on top of it.
After Johan plays Rainbow Ruins and Judai's Battle Phase ends, we see his Disk as Flare Neos returns to his field, but not only are his cards upside-down again--he also has regular ol' Neos where Flare Neos should be. Fixed both in AfterEffects by applying the Mole and Flare Neos proxies correctly, masking in the orb part of Judai's Disk over the Gran Mole one.
A bit after the eyecatch, as Judai realizes that Johan hasn't played his ace yet, he starts to ask about it, startling Johan as he slides into a split-screen with him to ask as much, but Johan starts to move for it a frame early. Fixed in Sony Vegas by sliding Judai in a frame earlier there.
Later, after Johan explains that Ruby Special-Summons itself and the other Gems in his Magic/Trap Zone when placed there (rude of the OCG to remove that part of its effect), we split out of the split-screen there as Ruby's summoned, but the border on Johan's split hangs on for an extra frame. Fixed in Vegas by just masking in part of the whooshing background over it.
A bit later, Johan declares a direct attack with Amethyst Cat, and Judai jumps as their split-screen splits apart to show Amethyst Cat pouncing at him, but as they slide apart, 1) there's a quick frame where there's just black behind them (and Johan's split's border isn't as glowy as Judai's), and 2) some of Johan's split's border hangs on for two frames after he and Judai slide offscreen. As noted for the preview version of this shot in 106's list, I fixed these here first before applying the fix there, masking in Amethyst Cat behind Judai and Johan as they split apart, then masking in some of the whooshing background behind Amethyst Cat to cover up the remaining bit of Johan's split border for those two frames.
Later, after summoning Air Neos (who), Judai slides into a split-screen to explain his ATK-gain-per-LP-difference effect; as they slide apart, Judai's uneven slide-out causes his side to take a frame longer than Johan's to slide offscreen. Fixed in Vegas by just masking part of Judai's slide-out a frame earlier to even up the slide-out.
A bit later, after Johan hypes up Rainbow Dragon only to end in a "just kiddin'," Judai clicks in for a split-screen in confusion before they split apart to show Air Neos's attack connecting with Amber Mammoth--as they split apart, parts of the border on Johan and Judai's splits hang on for an extra frame. I fixed this by just using the touched-up version of this shot from the recap in 108, which had Judai and Johan's splits slide out more naturally.
After the duel, Cobra walks out to congratulate the two on a duel well fought; he beckons them towards him, but as he walks up to the center of the arena to do so, his still feet jitter as Judai and Johan start to walk over. Fixed in Vegas by masking in his feet from the frame as Judai and Johan start to walk over over the 2-3 earlier frames as he gets to the center of the arena to keep it consistent.
Now, about the movie epic of my dreams...
Tumblr media
Well, considering that I'm always working hard or even trying to draw all kinds of inspirations from both art and life and fashioned any of them all into some lifelong dream movie epic of mine, there may also be three big major influences -- in addition to my actual life and childhood experiences and especially my love of the mighty Mesozoic beasts of prehistoric times called dinosaurs -- that might bear down on the research and development, writing, and especially the making of the movie epic of my lifelong dreams, which I'm trying to work on in any way, shape, form and means imaginable either since I was in high school or even since I was a little kid:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And, those three films that I'm talking about and in question may well be Steven Spielberg, Phil Nibbelink and Simon Wells' wacky and enjoyable comedy western, An American Tail: Fievel Goes West (1991), Cartoon Network and Genndy Tartakovsky's 1999 one hour made for television animated feature film Dexter's Laboratory: Ego Trip (TV, 1999) and James Cameron's 3-D CGI-laden science fiction epic blockbuster, AVATAR (2009), respectively.
Now, it might always and forever be very incredibly dangerous for even someone like you to read one's movies, artwork, writing, etc. especially such as mine's, in a much more biographical light, and even most fiction narrative films are, after all, just that: they're all fictions!
And yet, if I were to even pull off my dream movie epic very successfully, then whoever I truly am as a person, and especially my most authentic stuff, might hopefully come out, believe it or not, if and when I ever make or direct or even write a movie of my dreams and to my very specific liking. The film of my dreams that I really wanted to make, write, and/or direct far along, after all, may not be a small low budget indie art house film, and especially a rough and profane R-Rated one like 1994's Clerks or a comic book-derived superhero epic movie like 2012's The Avengers or 2008's earlier The Dark Knight or let alone, a modern horror film like 2017's Get Out or even a gross out R-Rated comedy like 2007's Superbad. And all those may not be who I really am.
Tumblr media
And whatever ultimate title, shape and form that my dream movie epic will assume in the end, and that most especially includes 'Planet of the Toons', it is going to be about people, young or otherwise old, and of real living flesh and blood or even fantastic beings made out of living cartoon ink and paint (as in the living (car)toons of the world of Who Framed Roger Rabbit), especially like these six cartoon characters above, who have to go on a great adventure of some sort in order to save the day as far as the things and fellow beings and creatures that he or she loved or cherished so much.
And even if my movies could ever reflect my own views, or even if the movies could ever reflect on them in turn, then either way is always fine with me.
I mean, many of my dream movie ideas and concepts are supposed to be adventure stories or even hero's journey narratives, especially of a bizarre or unusual sort or something, and filled with a sense of fantasy and wonder that's never been seen since or even outside of the original three Star Wars films from 1977 to 1983, maybe, but most especially the first 1977 Star Wars and its 1980 sequel The Empire Strikes Back, and so I never even made a secret about my affection towards older films, from Disney's 1937 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and MGM's 1939 The Wizard of Oz all the way up to James Cameron's AVATAR movie from 2009.
After all, I really would love to one day see, and I especially would one day love to see get made or funded or written down on some paper somewhere, a movie, and especially an epic movie, or even a happily ever after kind of epic, where any or everybody on the side of good and light and love -- even a walking, talking, and cute hand drawn 2d animated cartoon mouse, rabbit, bird, cat, or dog -- prevails against those on the side of evil and darkness and tyranny -- and especially against the dreaded and fearsome evil forces of a jealous and tyrannical hand drawn 2d animated cartoon nerd like the Mandark as he appears in Dexter's Laboratory's Ego Trip television special.
Now, my typical human hero, most often a young man or even a teenage boy, the latter type of whom ostensibly prefers trying to attract the opposite sex (and very attractive teenage girls, in particular) or perhaps even seeking out absolutely nothing but sex, drugs, alcohol, or especially property destruction or damage (all of which just so happened to be the very timeless classic staples of many a typical teen comedy movie, anyway), is summoned to a special world and to embark on a great adventure of his life, when, especially in the form of a very long distance outer space phone call paid to him by both a heroic cartoon cowboy mouse (as in the Fievel Goes West version of Fievel Mousekewitz himself) and a very lovely and very beautifully pretty saloon girl mouse (as in the Fievel Goes West version of Fievel's sister Tanya Mousekewitz as she is seen and voiced in that AAT:FGW movie by Cathy Cavadini of the Powerpuff Girls fame) on another Earth-like world or something, invites him and two other real human beings over to help them and their ally, a short, immortal being that bears a striking resemblance to a certain 90s cartoon boy genius, wrest back control of the latter being's ancient prized invention (which enables its user to control the entire universe for good or for evil) from a dreaded and fearsome Dark Lord being that also, in turn, bears a very striking resemblance to a certain bitter, jealous and tyrannical rival cartoon kid nerd to said certain cartoon boy scientist, and who had gain control of the boy genius' ideas, concepts and inventions long, long ago when said special world was still young.
Each plot just like this should create some situation in which a heraldic call to adventure is virtually demanded for the receiver of the call to either accept or refuse, with little or no apology necessary.
Tumblr media
Now, Luke Skywalker of the 1977 Star Wars movie fame usually needed a whole lot of training and guidance from both Jedi Knight and Clone Wars veteran Obi Wan "Ben" Kenobi as well as The Empire Strikes Back's Jedi Master Yoda in order for Luke himself to become a Jedi Knight just like his dad (who later turned out to be Anakin Skywalker, aka Darth Vader, in the aforementioned Empire Strikes Back and by the end of 1983's Return of the Jedi) before him, or perhaps or maybe not all of the characters that I am writing about or am currently attempting to write about; maybe all that any, or even some, of my characters that I'm trying to write about may want is some kind of excuse for them to embark on some great adventure in that very great big huge somewhere out there, even if it turn out to be another planet just like Earth but many light years away from our Earth in outer space, and to save the day from surely utter disruption, and some of the excuses may abound:
Tumblr media
Somewhere in my story treatment still in progress so far (as of late) for the epic of the Planet of the Toons, to give you just one example, the Fievel Goes West version of Tanya may have just fulfilled her quest not just for show business, but also to sing a song or two to the whole, entire world (of Ten'Jad, by the way) at large when she gets to sing one song to a saloon packed full of hungry cartoon cats, and maybe when her own brother, Fievel the cowboy mouse, tries to get his pretty and lovely saloon show girl mouse sister out of the saloon, having escaped being eaten by an outlaw spider man thing named T.R. Chula, maybe Tanya might be very kind enough for herself and Fievel to seek out and call up the full sized human ally of their shared dreams who, according to the prophecy in my movie ideas, they will join forces with to help the local residential (and maybe immortal) boy scientist Dexter (of Dexter's Laboratory fame) end the long reign of terror of the boy genius' wicked rival and Ten'Jad's local and residential Dark Lord, Mandark (of Dexter's Laboratory's Ego Trip television special infamy) in order for Dexter to also wrest back control of his long ago prized invention from his rival...and sure enough, the two cute heroic cowboy and pretty saloon girl brother and sister mice will finally find one that wil lcome in the name, shape and form of a teenage boy from Earth named David Joseph Zarus, who in my story lives in a similar kind of place to the one that this writer grew up in (i.e., near the outskirts of Annapolis in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, USA).
Tumblr media
Anyway, as far as the dark corners of the internet and/or especially, some fans and professionals in the animation and/or film entertainment industries or communities are really concerned, the situation may be much more complicated, and my current one from the heart dream movie epic story/idea/concept/project, Planet of the Toons, may play a key role even if it ever get written down, developed, produced, made or funded, especially. For if any of you, and anybody still interested, especially those outside the internet, just happen to read my story treatment one day, especially if it's about what takes place when the three astronauts and their pet animal mascot join forces with the three cute boy and girl mice (Fievel, Tanya and Yasha Mousekewitz), the rascally rabbit (Bugs Bunny), the greedy crazy bird (Daffy Duck) and the immortal or so little boy genius-like being (Dexter) on a questing journey to ensure that one of the astronauts (David Zarus) and two of the boy and girl mice (Fievel and Tanya Mousekewitz) fulfill an ancient, local prophecy stating that the two mice and one full sized young human guy from the stars team up to do away with the evil reign of terror of a certain wicked rival cartoon kid-like nerd (Mandark) of a certain little cartoon boy-like scientist (Dexter)'s and save the planet and the universe, it's going to be, hopefully, one of the greatest and most extraordinary adventure stories that ever will be put between the covers of a book or especially between the first and last reels of a full-length feature film. And maybe I am still fixated on the methodology of how to make a paying and moviegoing audience feel immersed in the same kind of great adventure that these three humans and these assorted walking, talking and cute cartoon boy and girl mice, rabbit, duck, and boy genius-like being are going through on another Earth-like planet as they journey to the faraway castle of the latter's rival to do away with Dexter's rival's crooked evil and treachery. So all this really isn't going to be about 'I want to vex the professional worlds of film and animation, and especially to vex the world of the internet to the point of all three worlds banding together to try to very brutally suppress or even censor my efforts or especially my works of art,' and I just don't think I ever intended to make something extremely controversial at all, even if I may not very much be prepared for just any uproarious reaction to my work and ideas and concepts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And gee, talk about possibly wandering blindfolded into a very incredibly dangerously live minefield! And even if it is that true, then, maybe I may have been preternaturally naïve and behaving nothing more or less better than some arrested kind of adolescent child breathtakingly trying to ignore or be breathtakingly ignorant of the whole, entire world around me at large, when all around me and my family will be all chaos and fire all over again!
Tumblr media
And either I may succeed above and beyond anyone's wildest dreams and mine's, or else. I may otherwise succeed all too well in bringing that very great and extraordinary adventure on the faraway planet of the toons to life on the big screen (or especially in IMAX or something), depending on one's view: either way, I may turn the rivalry between the two cartoon child scientists Dexter and Mandark, both past and future, as depicted in the Dexter's Laboratory: Ego Trip television special plus especially the real world plight of Fievel's own mouse family, The Mousekewitzes of Don Bluth and Steven Spielberg's American Tail and Amblimation's Fievel Goes West fame, into a more timeless and classic and epic struggle of good versus evil set on another planet just like our Earth that would have given the likes of James Cameron, George Lucas, or even J.R.R. Tolkien, a run for their money, especiall,y while also doing my best in avoiding, deleting, or even eliminating most any references to the Fievel Mousekewitz character's real world struggles and plight, his religious faith and heritage, his social class status, and/or especially the Fievel character's native and adopted cinematic homelands on our Earth (which may be unsurprising given recent turbulent events involving many parts of our world as of late and which may lead to the impending decline, fall, destruction, collapse, ruin and very calamitous end of U.S. American history and civilization, thereby affecting Western civilization and Western world history in turn in the very long run), thereby locating the worlds of Fievel and his friends and fellow mice and especially that of Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd and even that of Dexter, Mandark and Dee Dee safely in the world of Ten'Jad, a fictional, distant and faraway planet that'll be just like our Earth, complete with woodland forests,. a warm-cold or temperate climate and naturally breathable air (thankdully for us humans coming from Earth, especially), but lit by two suns by day and one moon by night and by virtue of being many light years far away from our planet. For example, in my Planet of the Toons treatment somewhere, the reason why the Mousekewitz family and young Fievel moves to a faraway free land among a free people (America on our Earth; Icamer on Ten'Jad) may be Fievel's house getting burned down not in a hate-based move or in an anti-Semitic pogrom, but in some rampaging fire-breathing dragon attack, and also because the chief villain, Mandark, tries to seek a way to quash a prophecy that will see Fievel and Tanya team up with a human from across the stars to stop him and bring down his evil empire!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, in the show Dexter's Laboratory, Mandark is usually Dexter's rival neighbor, but in my whole run of stories or story ideas and concepts, especially Planet of the Toons, he can basically be like the Dark Lord, Sauron, the mostly absent title villain in The Lord of the Rings -- and complete with a volcanic lair, even though the irony may be that all of this may well be sort of possible in canon because of the cartoon show's very fantastical nature.
But speaking of very literal evil toons besides such villains as Mandark himself, anyway, here is an 13-second edit of the infamous Coachman character from Walt Disney's 1940 magnum opus Pinocchio hissing very evilly that any of those boys going to some spooky place such as Pleasure Island will "never come back as BOYS!", only instead showing the character's best scary face (for fear of causing any more nightmares), I had Elmer Fudd, Fievel and Tanya Mousekewitz as well as Honest John the Fox and Gideon the Cat beholding the Coachman turning himself into Samurai Jack's even more demonic enemy Aku:
Anyway, even if my dream work on Planet of the Toons may attract the notorious attention of the dark corners of the internet, I am still subject to criticism, constructive or otherwise, as a storyteller, criticism as an artist, criticism as an American, and even criticism as a person, and I will forgive them all, but as far as the internet trying to make me some weird online cult wacko like Chris Chan (whom I may have heard about before, whom I'd still rather condemn for their beastly and monstrous behavior, and who had a very constant series of run ins with the rule of law and with many authorities throughout their life!), enough is ENOUGH! All I have to do otherwise is go and pray.
Maybe in the foreseeable future, one of the first things I'll ever do when everything's all said and done about my Planet of the Toons movie epic thing one of these days is to call anyone interested or even especially any of those among the film and animation industry professionals and say "look, I know you're super sensitive to things that you perceive may deviate from the source material -- because that person among the film and animation industry professionals or even an internet user may be railing to me or you about this and that deviating too much from the source -- but please watch it and give me notes or something." And maybe I shall actively try to get people, especially film and animation industry professionals, to tell me if anything deviates, however too much, from the source material, but what I don't like is people trying to suppress and censor me and my works of art, and all of that will rile me up otherwise!
Anyway, I don't think anyone on the internet should really seem to know what really, ultimately makes me tick, especially as a person, but anyway, all roads for me could lead all the way back to my parents and to my family. And I'm very much a product of my mom and dad and a literal human mutt, granted I have Scottish, English, German, and/or even Eastern European ancestors on my dad's and my mom's sides. Now, we love our parents, and they can do no wrong, and if they teach us either lies and/or truths, it either begets a tremendous conflict and/or even a tremendous boon in our lives.
And finally, last but not least, if even you delve into all that, you'll still learn a lot of things about me, especially.
Tumblr media
That's all, folks! So as to quote Porky Pig.
P.S. Since Christmas is coming, I'll leave all of you with a very special Christmas card from the Planet of the Toons featuring An American Tail's Fievel Mousekewitz, Tanya Mousekewitz and Yasha Mousekewitz (or raather specifically, the Fievel Goes West incarnations of all three cartoon boy and girl mice), Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck of Looney Tunes fame, and the Dexter the Boy Genius from Dexter's Laboratory, despite Dexter ending up being a very naughty boy as demonstrated in the notorious Dexter's Laboratory Christmas episode, 1998's Dexter vs. Santa's Claws as well as a surprised but very happy real kid, all below this post for your very own Yuletide holiday festive enjoyment:
Tagged by @apollo-cackling to do the 10 songs shuffle thing. Which I can actually do this time as I am listening to music again.
My music library is a bit of a threadbare mishmatch since I keep changing streaming services, unfortunately. Can't help that they are all bad! So there's other stuff I like but have forgotten about, or haven't gotten around to adding to my current service.
1. Dark Sarah - The Wolf and the Maiden. Symphonic metal, checks out.
2. Warpaint - Stars. One of the few from the indie rock era I still go back to. I saw them live in approx. 2011, I think?
3. Oceans of Slumber - The Hanging Tree. Fantastic band, and worth checking out. One of the few US metal bands I listen to.
4. Wild Beasts - All the Kings Men. Another from my early 2010s taste. I saw them live sometime around then.
5. Tool - Jambi. Yeah I'm a Tool-fan. Sorry. Seeing them live in (early) 2020 was the culmination of a teenage dream, though.
6. Loreena McKennitt - Beneath a Phrygian Sky. Some folk/new age, why not.
7. Rave the Reqviem - Synchronized Stigma. Industrial metal, great workout music. Amusingly blasphemous.
8. Unleash the Archers - Northern Passage. I'm seeing these guys live next week. Great band, from Canada, and yes they have done a cover of Northwest Passage for fun.
9. Franz Ferdinand - Brief Encounters. Don't actually recall this song, but I loved this band as a teenager. First gig I ever went to actually. My taste at the time was highly influenced by a cute redheaded friend that I had a crush on, we went to the gig together.
10. Delain - Control the Storm (live). Symphonic metal, checks out.
I'm not going to tag anyone as I think everyone has been tagged by this point and I don't want to spam. But please do it if you want to!
De Algemene Verwarring #108 - 4 March 2024
Episode one hundred and eight of De Algemene Verwarring was broadcast on Monday, March 4, 2024, and you can listen to it by clicking on the link below that will take you directly to the Mixcloud page:
Pictured below is Bärchen Und Die Milchbubis! They are a band from Hannover, Germany, they released one album and two singles between 1980 and 1982, and now, in 2024, they are touring again! But that's not why I played them in the show, I played them because they are one of the bands that are featured in the fantastic Inner World 033 podcast, by the World Of Echo label, and compiled by the Famous Mammals. It's a three hour long feast of great great music, and I wanted to direct my listeners to this podcast, go listen and enjoy. Also, this episode of De Algemene Verwarring is a digital one, so as always I'm playing some tracks that I don't own on a physical lp or cd. Some of them are just ripped off the youtubes because unavailable on other places, and some others are from the Bandcamp vaults. Links below in the playlist when available. I particularly enjoyed making this episode, I think there are some real bangers in there. Oh and by the way sorry for the delay with the update here. And beneath the photo you can find the playlist for this show. Enjoy!
