IN FACT MOST AREN'T

Let’s Start Talking About Those Often Overlooked in Black History

So, I'm on Instagram yesterday looking at a post about the deaths of both John Lewis and CT Vivian on an account I follow that you totally need to have on your feed if you don’t already, @jowilson_ . And under the post, I commented about how I was sad about this turn of events and how unfortunate it is that many people had never even heard of CT Vivian. And this woman replies to me with, I guess, the misunderstanding that I didn’t know who CT Vivian was and therefore proceeds to briefly explain his significance to me. Here is the post and subsequent exchange.

And I emerged from that moment like 🤨, because there were sooooo many things that were wrong with it. And at first, I tried to brush it off as no big deal, but then I landed back on the post again later, and I was like, “Nope, I need to address this adequately.” So, this is me, addressing it adequately. And I begin with a genuine and heartfelt request.

I have absolutely nothing but respect and reverence for Dr. King. But despite what we were all taught in our elementary school social studies lessons, he is not the only person of note from that era. There were many things that occurred during the Civil Rights Movement that didn't involve Dr. King or his specific efforts. I know that his name is likely one of the only few that you know, but why not broaden your perspective a little?

Look up Ella Baker, who founded SNCC (the civil rights organization of which the late John Lewis would become the chairman in 1963) as an alternative to the SCLC, whom she felt was not as in touch with young black people as they needed to be. Look up Malcolm X, because although I know you've heard the name, I can almost guarantee that you don't know much else about him besides the fact he and MLK did not agree on the method of nonviolent protest. Look up Fannie Lou Hamer, a native Mississippian who, after being the victim of an unwanted and unauthorized hysterectomy (aka the famed “Mississippi appendectomy”), devoted her life to seeing that black southerners from poor and rural communities like hers were allowed opportunities to exercise their rights as citizens to vote. Look up Fred Hampton, who was a prominent leader of The Black Panther Party, which, in part, advocated for Black Americans to honor their second amendment rights to arm themselves to help protect the black communities that were being terrorized by white law enforcement. (By the way, he was murdered in cold blood while he lay in bed next to his nearly nine-month pregnant fiancée by Chicago police officers when a sanctioned raid occurred at the culmination of an FBI campaign to actively interfere in the operation of The Panthers. The FBI had insisted they had done this, because the The Panthers were an extremely dangerous terrorist threat to the country. They were not.) And you need to look up CT Vivian, who was a member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and fought tirelessly for African Americans to experience America in the same way that white people have been free to do since the country’s inception. In fact, he was a part of the early marches in Selma to advocate for black Alabamians to be able to register to vote and was assaulted by sheriff Jim Clark as he beseeched him to allow those standing behind Vivian to be allowed to enter the county courthouse so they could become registered voters. This and other confrontations are what led to a nighttime march in neighboring Marion, Alabama where Jimmie Lee Jackson was murdered by police because he was trying to shield his mother from being beaten. This is why the march in Selma was planned for what we now call “Bloody Sunday”. This is the march from which you've seen images and videos of John Lewis marching across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, only to be immediately brutalized by mounted police. This is the perfect example of a historic moment that did not involve MLK’s direct presence that nonetheless needs to be told and retold as a crucial moment in American history.

But yes, CT Vivian did work alongside Dr. King as a part of the SCLC as an activist in The Movement. But lady (and we will temporarily sidestep the egregious issue of you trying to whitesplain his significance to ME when YOU clearly know so very little), if this is all you know about him AND think this is the best way to quickly explain his significance to someone who doesn’t know it, there is something incredibly wrong and disrespectful about that. I almost hesitated to write this, because especially as #BlackLivesMatter is no longer 'trending", I am annoyed (but not particularly surprised) by how quickly visible white liberal outrage has dissipated about the systemic racism of America and its harmful effects on African Americans. And so, when I do see a white person who is still paying attention to our cause, I feel compelled to "cut them some slack" when they do something that offends me. Because I don't want them to feel offended or attacked and then decide that there are a million other things to which they would rather devote their time and energy instead of Black Lives Matter. And then I think more about it, and I ask myself this:

How is what I just described any different from the way I've been operating my whole life? How is this different from me falling all over myself to keep the white people around me in a place of comfort despite whatever that costs me? How is this not ignoring the things that I need to prioritize the comfort of those who are likely already pretty comfortable? And I realized that it's not. I realized that continuing this compulsion that I've exercised my entire life to make sure that my blackness doesn't make anyone feel threatened (because I know that I don't need to do anything else but be black for some people to find a reason to discount me) does not serve ANYONE well. It doesn't serve me well, because it has made me quite resentful. And it doesn't serve white people well, because they HAVE NO IDEA that I'm doing this and therefore have no appreciation for it.

It's time for me to leave behind the things that clearly don't work and embrace the things that better suit me and my wellbeing. So, as much as I appreciate continued allyship, I MUST implore you, white allies, to occasionally check yourselves. We want you to join us in creating a better America, but your participation in that effort needs to be absent of condescension or placing your perceived elevated stature ahead of our black lives and experiences. We don't need you to explain to us the mechanics of racism or how to rise above it, because, real talk, you do not have a better vantage point of either of those things. And we don't need you to provide us with the most pertinent facts about the great icons of our community if you, yourself, don’t even really know what those facts are. I know who CT Vivian was; I don't need your shoddy recap of his importance. There are times to speak and times to listen. We need you to know the difference. I know that's not something America has done a particularly stellar job of teaching you how to do, but that's what WE need from you. And it is high time OUR NEEDS take precedence over YOUR comfort.

Balogna, a cheap and overly processed lunchmeat that has been a part of the diet of that America that they're so quick to latch onto, but most of this millionaire family turns their nose up at the idea of having to eat.

Duck Dynasty, a brand and a family that sell their garbage merchandise at a company (Wal-Mart) that ripped the heart, balls, and innards (all that would go into balogna) out of American smalltown business folk and replaced it with cheap Chinese manufactured goods and sent jobs overseas so that Duck Dynasty's main audience would have to be poor and eat balogna.

"Sticks and Stones" (1996) *Another of those generic mid-1990s coming of age / the dangers of handguns in a family home / absentee parents (too busy being a doctor more than a mom Kirstie Alley) / abusive white trash parents (father of the main bully) / dealing with school bullies and also brothers who are bullies too (Zack from Saved by the Bell. *barf* on both accounts) and the bullied (a young and pudgy Seth Rogen, you would think but the kid's name is Max Goldblatt along with his bully tackling overprotective daddy played by Gary Busey), complete with that wholesome Americana past-time of baseball as a connecting theme for this sentimental tripe.* either 1/2 a star or close to 2 stars

Professor Emerita Faith Ringgold Featured in 'Soul of a Nation'

Featuring more than 150 works by over 60 artists, many on display in the UK for the first time, Soul of a Nation will be a timely opportunity to see how American cultural identity was re-shaped at a time of social unrest and political struggle.

Soul of a Nation will showcase this debate between figuration and abstraction, from Faith Ringgold's American People Series #20: Die 1967 and Wadsworth Jarrell's Black Prince 1971 to Frank Bowling's Texas Louise 1971 and Sam Gilliam's April 4 1969. A highlight will be Homage to Malcolm 1970 by Jack Whitten, who was awarded the National Medal of Arts by Barack Obama in 2015, which will be going on public display for the very first time.

AT THE time I made American People Series #20: Die, all hell was breaking loose across parts of the United States.

There were riots as people fought for their civil rights.

Not much of this was being recorded in the press or on the TV news, but I saw the violence myself, and felt I had to say something about it.

Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power, review

Benny Andrews's Did the Bear Sit Under a Tree? is one of a number of punchy message-driven works that set the scene: the Stars and Stripes rolled back to reveal an angry black man waving his fists both at the Flag and the viewer. If the execution is none too subtle, with the figure rendered in rough-hewn sacking-relief with a zip for a mouth, Andrews wanted to reflect the "raw" aesthetics of his background in rural Georgia.

Faith Ringgold's Die creates a frantic pattern of wild-eyed, bleeding black and white people in which it's impossible to tell who's stabbing or shooting who, all in a compelling pop-expressionist style that isn't revisited in the exhibition or, it seems, the artist's own work.

Tate Modern's Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power is a trip through 20 years of black artists in the US experimenting with what black art could possibly be.

Benny Andrews worked with Bearden in another group, the Black Emergency Cultural Coalition. In Did the Bear Sit Under a Tree? (1969), a black protester shakes his fist at the American flag, which is meant to protect him, but is seen closed-off in its own cold space.

Spencer Museum exhibitions highlight African-American story quilts

The Spencer Museum of Art recently opened two evocative exhibitions that highlight African-American quilting traditions.

To complement this exhibition, Earle curated "Narratives of the Soul," which presents significant African-American quilts from the Spencer Museum's collection, as well as regional and national loans. One highlight of the exhibition is the art museum's "Flag Story Quilt" by renowned artist Faith Ringgold. Ringgold will give the keynote lecture for the Quilt Convention on Wednesday, July 12, at the Lied Center.

The exhibit mostly displays Holmes' paintings for the children's books she has recently illustrated, including her works on Fannie Lou Hamer, titled "Voice of Freedom" and "Out of Wonder, Poems Celebrating Poets." The Hamer book, produced with writer Carole Boston Weatherford, garnered a children's book trifecta: The Caldecott Honor Book, The Robert F. Sibert Honor Book and the John Steptoe New Talent Coretta Scott King Award.

Carlsbad Museum opens children's books illustration exhibit

The exhibit, "Childhood Classics: 100 Years of Original Illustration from the Art Kandy Collection," is open through Sept. 30 to allow for class field trips to view illustrations from children's books.

The exhibit, which originally opened in California, features original illustrations from Dr. Seuss' "Cat in the Hat", Garth Williams' "Stuart Little," "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak and Floyd Cooper's "Jump! From the Life of Michael Jordan."

In this week's interview, we speak with Carmen Agra Deedy, author of The Rooster Who Would Not Be Quiet!, a children's book-illustrated by Eugene Yelchin-about a rooster who insists on singing despite the mayor's no-singing laws. Deedy discusses young readers, surveillance, and the use of humor when confronting difficult realities.

What is the responsibility of the writer of children's books?

To respect the intelligence of young readers and never, ever, lie to them. They will love you for the former and crucify you should you ignore the latter.

Meigs ancestor became renowned author

The fame of the Rodgers family of Perryville and Havre de Grace extends far and wide with Commodore John Rodgers being the top echelon of that pyramid of fame.

If one were to trace the lineage of Meigs and Rodgers families for a bit, one will arrive at another Meigs of note who, sadly, hasn't reached the level of fame and recognition as her male ancestors with their impressive military careers. This ancestor was Cornelia Meigs, an author of fiction and biography, a teacher and historian of note and a critic of children's literature. Truly she was an astounding woman who contributed greatly to children's literature as a whole.

She would leave Bryn Mawr to teach writing at the New School of Social Research in New York and was the lead editor and a writer of "A Critical History of Children's Literature," published in 1953. The book was called landmark in the field of children's literature studies. It was later revised under Meigs' critical eye and reissued in 1969.

She would write over 30 fiction books for children, two plays, two biographies and several books and articles for adults.

Books raise awareness, sensitivity to suffering

Today's reviewed books help create a more sensitive awareness of this global problem that promotes empathy, and that's a very good thing because if we were among the 65.6 million displaced people in the world, we'd surely want others to be empathetic toward our plight and offer us help.

"A Long Walk to Water" by Linda Sue Park

Alternating narratives of two young people living in Sudan, this book is based on the true story of the life of Salva Dut, who, at age 11, was separated from his family and village during yet again another battle in the Second Sudanese Civil War. Against all odds, Salva's journey of many years, walking from one refugee camp to another, across Africa to Ethopia, to Kenya and back to Sudan, demonstrates enormous courage, hope and the will to survive.

The second voice in "A Long Walk to Water" is young Nya, who walks for eight hours every day simply to fetch water. How and why their lives intersect is both profound and moving.

An important work in many regards, "A Long Walk to Water" not only raises an awareness of the suffering of others, but in so doing, helps readers develop compassion, empathy and a deeper appreciation of those things many of us take for granted.

Books commended by the Award address themes of topics that engage children in thinking about peace, justice, world community and/or equality of the sexes and all races. The books also must meet conventional standards of literacy and artistic excellence.
