Edit: the app launched and Is down- I have the initial apology video in a post here and I’m working on getting a full archive of their TikTok up ASAP. I’m letting the rest of this post remain since I do still stand by most of it and also don’t like altering things already in circulation.

Warning for criticism and what I’d consider some harsh to outright mean words:

So I’ve just been made aware of the project known of as ‘lore.fm’ and I’m not a fan for multiple reasons. For one this ‘accessibility’ tool complicates the process of essentially just using a screen reader (something native to all I phones specifically because this is a proposed IOS app) in utterly needless and inaccessible ways. From what I have been seeing on Reddit they have been shielding themselves (or fans of the project have been defending them) with this claim of being an accessibility tool as well to which is infuriating for so many reasons.

I plan to make a longer post explaining why this is a terrible idea later but I’ll keep it short for tonight with my main three criticisms and a few extras:

1. Your service requires people to copy a url for a fic then open your app then paste it into your app and click a button then wait for your audio to be prepared to use. This is needlessly complicating a process that exists on IOS already and can be done IN BROWSER using an overlay that you can fully control the placement of.

2. This is potentially killing your own fandom if it catches on with the proposed target market of xreader smut enjoyers because of only needing the link as mentioned above. You don’t have to open a fic to get a link this the author may potentially not even get any hits much less any other feedback. At least when you download a pdf you leave a hit: the download button is on the page with the fic for a reason. Fandom is a self sustaining eco system and many authors get discouraged and post less/even stop writing all together if they get low interaction.

3. Maybe we shouldn’t put something marketed as turning smut fanfic into audio books on the IOS App Store right now. Maybe with KOSA that’s a bad idea? Just maybe? Sarcasm aside we could see fan fiction be under even more legal threat if minors use this to listen to the content we know they all consume via sites like ao3 (even if we ask them not to) and are caught with it. Auditory content has historically been considered much more obscene/inappropriate than written content: this is a recipe for a disaster and more internet regulations we are trying to avoid.

I also have many issues with the fact that this is obviously redistributing fanfiction (thus violating the copyright we hold over our words and our plots) and removing control the author should have over their content and digital footprint. Then there is the fact that even though the creator on TikTok SAYS you can email to have your fic ‘excluded’ based on the way the demo works (pasting a link) I’m gonna assume that’s just to cover her ass/is utter bullshit. I know that’s harsh but if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck it’s probably a duck.

I am all for women in stem- I’ve BEEN a woman in Stem- but this is not a cool girl boss moment. This is someone naive enough to think this will go over well at best or many other things (security risks especially) at worst.

In conclusion for tonight: I hope this person is a troll but there is enough hype and enough paid for web domains that I don’t think that’s the case. There are a litany of reasons every fanfic reader and writer should be against something like this existing and I’ll outline them all in several other posts later.

Do not email their opt out email address there is no saying what is actually happening with that data and it is simply not worth the risks it could bring up. I hate treating seemingly well meaning people like potential cyber criminals but I’ve seen enough shit by now that it’s better to be safe than sorry. You’re much safer just locking all your fics to account only. I haven’t yet but I may in the future if that is the only option.

If anyone wants a screen reader tutorial and a walk through of my free favorites as well as the native IOS screen reader I can post that later as well. Sorry for the heavy content I know it’s not my normal fare.

~ Summary 

Espresso's words were like paper having been written on and he had used glue made from poison to glue it it to Madeleine.

All Madeleine wanted to do was help but sometimes help can cross the line of what's right and wrong.

~Prologue

You know how paper sticks to glue? You also probably know how you can write stuff to that paper. You can write some vile stuff on paper and this is how it was to Madeleine. Always protecting and caring for Espresso when he needed to. Yet Espresso would only his mouth to say hurtful connected words.

'I did not need help from such an annoyance'

'I'M FINE! You are not my mother nor any type of family or important to me in any way.'

'All you are to me is an annoyance'

Madeleine may wear armor to protect himself, all that armor becomes all but a basic sheet when compared to Espresso's words. He'd never shown it on the outside but those butterflies in his stomach would turn into butterfly knives when he ever heard those words.

'Useless Madeleine'

'Can't even help Espresso'

He'd think. No cookie understood as all they saw was a man who was spiteful and a man who didn't seem to let it hit him. But those papers would glue so well to him.

~Start

The sun was just coming out from it's long hide and seek game. Madeleine had stepped outside into the air with a box of freshly baked donuts and cakes. He set his direction to the opposite side of the town, where Espresso cookie rested or where he should be testing. Knowing that cookie, he was up all night trying to perfect his coffee and with the new drink in Sparkling's bar coming up soon, he had no time to rest. Espresso and Sparkling had come onto an agreement to make a new coffee-beer beverage? Coming from the testing cookies, including Madeleine, it was still being tested and tasted very very weird. Espresso had only agreed upon it for money, you know that thing you earn and doesn't just appear. Yeah.

Madeleine crossed many cookies while lost in thought, he nearly passed Espresso's house but he manage to catch it just barely. He spun on his heels to knock on the door. *knock* *knock* Nothing came. 'Maybe he's asleep?' Madeleine thought, he was about to retreat with a sign before the door opened. There appeared a messy haired, fairly pissed off, Espresso cookie. "WHAT WOULD YOU POSSIBLE NEED?" He snapped "Well you sound pissed" Madeleine laughed. As he looked in, he saw broken equipment, he knew he did it again. Just his luck to barge in on an experiment and ruin it. "Nice observations, are you finally the one to take over Almond Cookie's #1 detective spot?" Espresso cookie snapped sarcastically "Tell me what a annoyance like you is doing here?!"Madeleine simply laughed, yet another paper having been written with a bloodied knife glued to him. "May I come in?" Madeleine said, trying to sound unbothered, Espresso sighed and made space.

Madeleine walked in. Espresso house was, not surprisingly, a mess of experiments and books. He walked around the corner to find the kitchen and succeed in so. Espresso followed him. The tension in the air could nearly be mistaken for a cake's mass. Madeleine looked to the side and coughed slightly, still keeping up a smile despite the butterflies marrying a knife to add to their names. How Madeleine wished he could marry Espresso. He drafted that thought as he looked down onto the box to tell Espresso cookie about the food. "Knowing you, dear Espresso cookie, you have yet to eat nor sleep." Madeleine started with an already grumbling Espresso across from him. "So I graciously spared my time to help you eat and sleep!" Madeleine was putting up the same act. How he wanted to draft into sea to never see it again when he was around Espresso but he couldn't. Espresso hated him. The act was a protective layer to him, to avoid getting hurt and while it worked fairly well to protect against everyone else, especially back in the Republic. It wasn't with Espresso, it was a tear through paper to Espresso.

"You need not worry while I'm here!" Madeleine added after a train ride of thoughts. Espresso grumbled but ate anyways.

Madeleine headed to town square. Not for a fan meet up but a private meeting between him and Latte. He needed to talk to her about Espresso. If he couldn't get through then Latte could. While the drink was a major success, it was also a major success in insomnia. Espresso was staying up for dangerously longer and there needed to be an intervention.

"Yoo~ Hoo~ over here!" Latte called from a chair by the bakery. Madeleine twisted his head to see her and started to walk towards her. "Hey" He simply said whilst sitting down. "Hello, let's get straight to the point." Latte started, taking a sip from a sweetened coffee. "In your letter, it stated that due to the success of the new beverage, Espresso has been using it to sustain himself for a longer time but has gotten worse, so much more worse." She simplified, Madeleine nodded. "Oh dear" she huffed under her breath in a worried tone. "Well" She started, standing up from her chair and pushing in, "I shall work on him with that." She finished. Madeleine nodded wordlessly but that was enough. Latte had started her venture to Espresso's house.

While she worked on that. Madeleine's thoughts had started to chase its own tail. He was worried, what if Espresso got mad at him? Was he going too far? No no, nonsense, Espresso was not taking himself into consideration, he needed to be taken care of like always.

Madeleine awoke to an angry pounding at his door. He shook off sleep in a panic, I mean who wouldn't if there was an angry pounding at his door at... At when? At 5am. Why 5am? He shook off that question when the pounding got worse and worse. He rushed down to open to find a even-more pissed off Espresso from a few days ago. He was literally red and producing steam. "MADELEINE" He screamed. Madeleine, still relatively tired, backed up as Espresso followed him and slammed the door shut. "W-what!?" Madeleine said, for once letting a shaky tone get to his voice. "DID YOU SERIOUSLY TELL MY FUCKING SISTER ABOUT MY SLEEP HABITS?!" He screamed. The thoughts from the day earlier flowing into his head. Espresso was pissed and he had a right to be.

Madeleine was a tattle tail, he was quiet. "ANSWER ME YOU PIECE OF SHIT" Espresso screamed in his face, Madeleine obviously shocked. Espresso saw him shaking and backed off. "Tell me." Espresso interrogated. Madeleine swallowed his saliva. "Yes" He answered, trying to collect the mental fragments of himself that was thrown on the ground. He started another sentence his usually protective layer but lot more shaky. "Espresso dear, you were harming yourself with those habits, a knight like me could not stand by." Madeleine tried to sound confident and like his usually kind self but failed. "YOU DONT TALK TO MY SISTER FOR THAT!" Espresso snapped, Madeleine about to argue you back but Espresso started another sentence. "YOU TALK TO ME! ARE YOU AWARE OF HOW FUCKING USELESS YOU ARE!?" Espresso caught a breath before continuing. "NOT ONLY DO YOU DESTROY MY EQUIPMENT BUT GO BEHIND MY BACK TO FUCKING HANDLE THINGS SUCH AS THIS IN A DRASTICALLY WRONG WAY." Madeleine tried to talk. To apologize but failed. "AND I SWEAT IF I HEAR A STUPID FAKE APOLOGY FROM YOU JUST TO SOOTH OUR RELATIONSHIP, IT WILL NOT WORK." Madeleine gulped, he felt so so very dizzy. "DO YOU NOT KNOW HOW I FEEL?" Those butterflies in his stomach turning to knives. "I'VE HATED YOU FOR SO FUCKING LONG AND-" Madeleine wanted to crawl up under his covers, to hide away. "-YOU DO THIS. ARE YOU BLIND OR JUST FUCKING STUPID?!" Tears spilled from Madeleine's eyes. "DO NOT CONTACT ME AND LEAVE ME ALONE, I AM FILING FOR A RESTRAINING ORDER." Espresso screamed as he stomped out and slammed the door. More papers than he could count were glued to him in that singular morning, drowning him.

Madeleine loved Espresso to death but reciprocation was not there. True to his word, a restraining order was filed. Madeleine crossed the line. For days had he sobbed, wishing this was a nightmare and not reality, he was cuddled up to Espresso peacefully. He was not. This was real, so real like the injuries he's sustained in battle. Cookies would come to check up on them. Notably Almond, he had understood how it felt having his own child runaway from him. Someone they both loved so much leaving them and not contacting them. Maybe one day, just one day, he could hold Espresso in his arms and tell him how beautiful, smart, talented and much more he was, how long the list went only god would be aware of. That was a far away dream as he lied in his bed in deserved grief. The glued papers, wouldn't come off for a while but this time it was spiked glue.
