I decided that the Dancing Lady needed one more crew member. I have a smuggle, an ex-Jedi, and a ex-bounty hunter. I figured the Dancing Lady needed someone, who was not a fighter. I needed a mechanic, so I decided on a teenage female Mikkian, who would happen to be a mechanical genius. Meet Tara the last member of the Dancing Lady. She was drawn and designed by Etsy artist, Adzhi Diaz Art

Bingo. I have nothing to add other than do NOT oversell it. Does your character have a catchphrase? Resist the urge to overuse it. Once is enough, but make sure you can find something else to reference in their mannerisms, speech patterns, facial expressions.
If you haven’t creeped on your characters on repeat like they’re your middle school love interest, you’re going to have a hard time with this.
Edit: I lied. I have one more thing to add. Your characters need to THINK in their voice. Don’t just pay attention to the dialogue. If you’re describing thoughts or feeling they’re having, they need to be processing those thoughts it the same way they would speak them. But then I’m not a big fan of a narrators voice.
My biggest tip for fanfic writers is this: if you get a character's mannerisms and speech pattern down, you can make them do pretty much whatever you want and it'll feel in character.
Logic: Characters, just like real people, are mallable. There is typically very little that's so truly, heinously out of character that you absolutely cannot make it work under any circumstance. In addition, most fans are also willing to accept characterization stretches if it makes the fic work. Yeah, we all know the villain and the hero wouldn't cuddle for warmth in canon. But if they did do that, how would they do it?
What counts is often not so much 'would the character do this?' and more 'if the character did do this, how would they do it?' If you get 'how' part right, your readers will probably be willing to buy the rest, because it will still feel like their favourite character. But if it doesn't feel like the character anymore, why are they even reading the fic?
Worry less about whether a character would do something, and more about how they'd sound while doing it.

reblog if you believe fanfics are as valid as books that were published and sold by authors who write as their main careers. I'm trying to prove a point

Expanding a thought from a conversation this morning:
In general, I think "Is X out-of-character?" is not a terribly useful question for a writer. It shuts down possibility, and interesting directions you could take a character.
A better question, I believe, is "What would it take for Character to do X?" What extremity would she find herself in, where X starts to look like a good idea? What loyalties or fears leave him with X as his only option? THAT'S where a potentially interesting story lies.
In practice, I find that you can often justify much more from a character than you initially dreamed you could: some of my best stories come from "What might drive Character to do [thing he would never do]?" As long as you make it clear to the reader what the hell pushed your character to this point, you've got the seed of a compelling story on your hands.

those first couple weeks after escaping a time loop have gotta be disorienting as all fuck. all those little cues that used to tell you what's about to happen are now triggers that cause you to brace for something that isn't coming. you have to relearn the permanence of death -- hell, you have reacquaint yourself with the entire concept of finality altogether. everything keeps changing but it never changes back and you keep having to remind yourself that this is normal. "it won't reset anymore," you echo to yourself, over and over and over, like a broken record, like you're still trapped in a loop, like someone who escaped the time loop but was doomed to bring it into the future with them

This is petty fandom salt, BUT... I've been chewing on this phenomenon that I've been calling "Fandom's Darling". It is related to things like "Author's Darling" and "Mary Sue / Gary Stu" and "Protagonist Halo" and all that jazz, where one character gains a peculiar narrative weight in a story.
"Author's Darling" is when a writer has a favorite character, and the world and all other characters sort of get... warped to put the Darling in the spotlight. It's most noticeable in TV shows with multiple writers, when a character you personally like suddenly has their previous characterization destroyed to make another character look good somehow. Every other character might become weirdly incompetent. The Darling's feelings are treated as The Most Important Feelings in any given situation. The logic of the fictional world seems broken past suspension of disbelief in order to validate this one character's beliefs or skillset or some other fantasy. And so on.
"Fandom's Darling" is what I've been calling the pattern where a fandom essentially crowns a New Protagonist for their fanfiction stories (it's often a side character rather than the original protagonist, but it can also happen to protagonists). This character becomes the self-insert for all sorts of indulgent fantasies, gaining special powers or backstories, and/or becoming the focus of extreme whump, and/or hooking up with all the various hotties, starring in all sorts of tropey AUs, and so on. They're not always an obvious Mary Sue version of themselves, but the character's original personality and interpersonal relationships tend to get warped or dropped completely, and other characters tend to become a little flat around them. I call it "Fandom's Darling" because it's not just one self-indulgent fantasy fic (you do you! Have fun!) with characterization choices that I don't vibe with (I have neither the time nor the desire nor the authority to police anything, I am just venting), but rather a prolific mini-fandom of sorts revolving around this empty doll / fanon version of the chosen vessel character, so it becomes a little unavoidable.
I am salty about this (mildly frustrated) (imagine a soft sigh of disappointment before I just go do something else) because you are FUCKED if you actually liked the canonical version of this character and their interpersonal relationships. It's almost worse than liking an obscure character that no one cares about. There's about a thousand fics starring your fave, but maybe only about a dozen of them are actually rooted in any kind of recognisable canon.

Chapter 9: The Temple
The Dancing Lady sat on the hot desert planet of Arda I. Aola and Tara were out surveying the planet. While they were gone, they were unaware of what was taking place in the starboard cargo bay. Former Jedi Rania Chera sat with her legs folded sitting across her Jedi starfighter, which had been there since she first met Aola Beck. In the center of the bay a small cargo container floated in air. Anyone who knew Rania would assume Rania was using the force to levitate the container. Be that as it may, they would be wrong, standing near the container with her eyes closed and her arm outstretched was Tizz Uuram. Rania believed that Tizz was force sensitive and confirmed it on the ice world of Tokmia. Although Rania had kept Tizz’s secret from the others, she had talked her into allowing her to train her when the other’s were not around.
The container started to shake. “Stay calm, Tizz” Rania said quietly.
“I can’t believe I let you talk me into this.” Tizz replied.
“Your abilities could be helpful to us. If not for you we wouldn’t have saved Tara on Tokmia. But you need to learn to control them.” Rania commented.
Tizz lowered the box wiping the sweat off her browe. She asked “What do you think Aola and Tara will find out there?”
“I don’t know, you never can tell with Aola.” Rania said as she sighed.
Just then they could hear footsteps coming up the boarding ramp. “Speak of the devil, Aola and Tara must be back. Let’s go see.” Rania said to Tizz.
As Tizz and Rania left the cargo bay and entered the main corridor, they saw Aola and Tara with a Nautolan female, an amphibious humanoid just like Master Kit Fitso. However, her skin was blue unlike Master Fitso’s green. She was wearing a long brown professional dress and looked very formal. She carried a piece of luggage and a small case.
“Ah there you are.” Aola said. “Let me introduce Dr. Nia Fonar. Dr. Nia Fonar, this is the rest of my crew, Rania Chera and Tizz Uuram. Dr. Nia Fonar is our next job. She is an archeologist that would like us to take her to Dantooine."
“That’s it. Transport her to Dantooine?” Tizz asked.
“Well not exactly.” Dr. Fonar responded. “I’m interested in looking at a temple on Dantooine, but I afraid it might be dangerous there, maybe pirates. I am archeologist and don’t really know how to protect myself, so I would like you to keep me safe while I’m there. We won’t be long and as I explained to Aola I pay well.”
“Tizz, you and Tara will have to double up to provide Dr. Fonar with a cabin. Tara will you take Dr. Fonar to your cabin.” Aola told her.
As Tara led Dr. Fonar away, Aola turned to see both Rania and Tizz with their arms folded and annoyed looks on their faces.
“What?” Aola replied to their looks.
Tizz spoke first “You don’t find this strange, that you found a lone archeologist on this almost empty world, far off the beaten track."
Rania continued “Why is she here? How did she get here? Why does she need us as bodyguards?”
“She came to this planet to survey an area called the Gauntlet and was attacked by pirates and crashed. Tara looked over her ship and even she couldn't fix it. After being shot down by pirates, she is probably afraid and that's why she needs us as protection. All I know is it’s good money and I also know there’s nothing dangerous on Dantooine.” Aola repling to their questions. “Now I have to get ready for takeoff.” as she turned and headed for the cockpit.
"I don't like this." Tizz said.
"Neither do I." Rania replied.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aola, Rania, Tizz, and Tara sat in The Dancing Lady’s cockpit as it came out of hyperspace over Dantooine. It was a green planet, mostly grassy plains and forests. It had a very small population, only a few farmers. Aola brought The Dancing Lady down in one of these grassy fields not far from the temple, that Dr. Fonar wanted to view.
“Well we’re here. Let’s go inform Dr. Fonar.” Aola said to the others. They all rose from their seats and headed towards Tara’s cabin, which Dr. Fonar was currently using.
Aola knocked on the door “Dr. Fonar, we’re here.”
The door slid open and the crew were astonished. Dr. Fonar stood in front of them wearing a long black leather skirt slit down the sides showing knee high boots, a short brown leather jacket like Rania’s and a tan shirt similar to Aola’s. She looked more like a smuggler than the archeologist that had come onboard earlier. However, it was the DH-17 blaster hanging on her hip that really caught them by surprise.
Fonar saw the crew looking at her and looked down at herself. "Oh, you must be surprised by my outfit." Fonar said "One of my co-workers suggested I dress like this so I fit in."
"And the blaster?" Tizz asked.
"Oh, the same. I barely know how to use it. But I was told it would be a good deterrent." Fonar stated naively. "You said we’re here?"
"Yes, the temple is several klicks from here. We'll leave whenever you’re ready." Aola stated.
"I just have to get my survey case and we can leave." Fonar said.
Several seconds later, they were outside The Dancing Lady, on the grassy plain. "Tizz and Rania take point. Tara you stay with Dr. Fonar and I take rearguard." Aola ordered.
They had to pass through a forest to get to the temple on it’s other side. As they began their journey through the forest Rania whispered to Tizz "I still don't like this."
Tizz whispered back "I know. From what Tara told me last night about Fonar's ship, it was covered with scorch marks."
"Well wouldn't you expect that from a pirate attack." Rania answered.
"Yes, by why didn't they land and finish the job. Take all they could get from her ship and kill her or at least take her as a slave?" Tizz asked back.
They had walked about half way through the forest and Rania raised her arm to signal a stop. As the rest of the group caught up with Rania and Tizz, Rania said "Were about half way there. I suggest we stop and allow Dr. Fonar a break."
"I'm fine. We can keep going." Fonar responded.
"No we should all take a break." Aola stated.
Rania walked over to Aola and was telling Aola about her and Tizz's worries. Tizz was leaning against a tree when a red shot of blaster fire just missing her. A creature behind the tree that had been sneaking up on Tizz fell dead. Tizz turned to see the dead stalking lizard on the ground. Everyone turned to see who had shot the creature and saved Tizz. The only one with a blaster drawn was Dr. Fonar.
"I'm sorry, I saw that creature behind Tizz and I shot at it. I could have killed you." Fonar said naively the blaster shaking in her hand.
"No that thing could have killed me." Tizz said thanking Fonar.
"Well I suggest we continue." Aola said. "Rania and Tara take point now, I'll stay with Dr. Fonar and Tizz take the rear."
"Rania" Tara whispered, "I was behind Dr. Fonar when she killed that lizard. I never saw anyone draw and fire so fast."
"I know, Tizz and me have our worries about who she really is?" Rania whispered back.
Soon they were at the temple entrance. "You can stay here. I just need to look around inside." Dr. Fonar said "I won't be long." as she entered the temple.
After a long period of time had passed, Rania stated "I'm going in to check on Dr. Fonar and maybe I can learn who she really is."
Rania walked into the temple and the further she got the darker it became. She pulled out her lightsaber from it's pouch and activated it to provide light. Eventually, she heard Fonar's voice, but it wasn't the shy, naïve voice she had heard when they had first met. She could just make out Fonar saying "...I have checked Arda I and Dantooine, both seem good for bases."
"Who was this woman?" Rania thought to herself. "I need to get closer and find out."
"I believe I have company. I speak with you later, Fulcrum." Fonar said as Rania approached. “You shouldn’t have come in here. I didn’t want to kill anybody.” Fonar said with her back to Rania, who could now see that the case was a sub space transmitter.
“Who are you?” a confused Rania asked.
Fonar rose from the crouching position she was in and turned on Rania with her blaster drawn only to be startled by what she saw.
“You have a lightsaber. Are you a Jedi?” Fonar asked.
“I was a former Jedi Knight before Order 66.” Rania responded angrily as she used the force to rip Fonar’s blaster out of her hand. “And you still haven’t answered my question. Who are you? You obviously aren’t an archaeologist.”
A bit startled her blaster now in Rania’s hand, Fonar replied “I am actually an archaeologist, but I am also a member of an alliance being formed to overthrow the Emperor and the Empire.”
“I don’t understand, what are you doing?” Rania asked again.
“This alliance is using my archaeological knowledge to locate places to use as hidden bases until we can bolster our strength.” Fonar explained. “And it also allowed me to travel the galaxy without the Empire getting suspicious.”
“But they did didn’t they? It was them that shot you down on Arda I wasn’t it?” Rania replied
“Yes it was. Luckily for me, the Empire isn’t very efficient and didn’t check the crash site to make sure I was dead and then your friends showed up, who were perfect for my needs to get off Arda I.” Fonar said. “You know we could use some good fighters, why don’t you and your friends join our alliance.”
“The four of us hate the Empire, but each of us just recently escaped from them. I doubt the others would wish to risk their lives so soon after just escaping, but I’ll ask them.” Rania said.
“What about you? You’re a Jedi. You fought for the Republic.” Fonar stated.
“I still have to think things through. I know it was the Emperor who branded the Jedi traitors, but the Galactic Senate stands with him.” Rania said shaking her head.
“Not all the Senate backs him, some are the ones putting together this alliance. If you change your mind I’ll give you the frequency and codes to speak with Fulcrum. She’s the leader of one these rebel cells.” Fonar suggested.
As they started towards the entrance to the temple. Rania mentioned “Um, I hope you still realize Aola is expecting to be paid.”
“Not a problem drop me off on Alderaan and you will receive your payment. Can I have my blaster back now.” Fonar asked as they exited the temple into the daylight and the waiting crew of The Dancing Lady.
