Re Lolita.

Maybe it's because I went to an IB school that nailed critical thinking skills into you from a young age (seriously- the difference I see is night and day), but we actually read Lolita in eleventh grade English, and none of us walked away thinking it was a good relarionship. The whole reason they even taught it to us was because it bucks the pervasive stereotype of these people being basement dwelling, slobby freaks, and it shows, like domestic abusers often are, these people are often hiding in plain sight. If that's not a deeply important lesson, I don't know what is.

As far as "I'm grossed out by this, it's fucking pedophilia", good for you, I suppose? Do you want a gold star? I'm pretty sure everyone agrees with you, even the people who have certain kinks related to adult/child relationships. But we're not talking about real pedophilia, we're talking about fictional, and you can't even differentiate between the two which is telling enough of how unable you are to think with your brain.

Pedophilia kink, to me, is on the same level of gross as bestiality kink. But you know what? Most people who like the thought of making out with an animal or monster aren't going to walk out the door and fuck a dog. I can easily apply that to pedophilia kink. And you know what else? Think about what would happen if, given the near-total lack of resources for people with pedophilia to address their problem and get actual, compassionate help, all this totally fictional material went up in smoke. I'd rather do the right thing and just not censor based on gross.

#7342 - Okay so i do think this is where a lot of people get it wrong.

Pedophilia ≠ Predator

Pedophilia is a disorder where someone is involuntarily attracted to minors, which is why you see the arguments of people trying to validate it as a "real sexuality" because so is being lesbian/bi/gay/etcetc which they really shouldn't even remotely compare for reasons I'll elaborate on in a second and is honestly horrifically manipulative, frankly I consider it worse than child predation to be essentially encouraging/convincing people who suffer from this disorder to act upon their involuntary attraction. Caused well, It creates predators.

Anyway—the big reason that pedophilia shouldn't be remotely considered a "valid sexuality" is because the target of that attraction cannot consent. And if you do think minors can consent, seek help.

Overall, and this will be the more, way more controversial take that I know people will have a knee jerk reaction to. Pedophilia, as a disorder, NEEDS to be destigmatized for the safety of everyone.

If a disorder is so horrifically stigmatized people will be scared to seek treatment, therefore will never be able to manage it, making it worse. We've seen this happen especially with cluster-b disorders.

If we destigmatize the disorder, encourage people suffering from it to get help instead of falling into these harmful anti-recovery communities that indoctrinate them into potentially predating on children, be able to research the disorder on a deeper level to treat it even more effectively. We could potentially significantly reduce CSA.

(This also extends to zoophilia as well.)

And to anyone out there suffering from these disorders: seek help, if you're not able to afford therapy or any of the sorts, or just scared to, research into techniques that could help you, it doesn't necessarily have to be specifically for pedophilia, techniques for OCD could also significantly help on a similar level anything that focuses on unwanted/intrusive thoughts, there are resources out there for you.

I just want to say, I think it's criminal how bad we're failing our children that IB or equivalents still aren't considered the bar minimum for all schools to meet. You'd think that educating kids on how to make sense of things would be a priority, but so many countries don't prioritize it at all. (I also wonder if this is half the reason we have a major anti problem on our hands now, because kids are bombarded with bad info on social media from the time they're old enough to hold a tablet, so it's a big, bad cocktail of uh-oh.)

Everyone is going on about censorship but OP literally didn't say anything about that. They didn't say it should all be banned and censored, they said "you shouldn't be enjoying that." They're kinkshaming. Fight the right battles, people.

I get that censorship is an important issue but yall jump to it anytime someone just says they don't like something. Like people critique the toxic relationships in Twilight all day without ever saying that they want the books to be flat out banned.

And Re Re Lolita: honey "none of [you] walked away thinking it was a good relationship" because you had an english TEACHER there guiding your interpretations of the text. But figuring out that the jailed, clearly unreliable narrator who manipulates, kidnaps, drugs, coerces, and rapes a 12-year-old is bad actually doesn't exactly take high and mighty IB-level critical thinking skills. (I wish I could say it's just basic common sense, except some film directors clearly missed the point so...) The book itself does not portray it as good or romanticized! It was written to explore and address hebephilia, and it did so without actual erotic scenes that sexualize a teenager. It is saying something about abusive sexual relationships, not made to arouse. Do you honestly think that's comparable to smut fics made for people to get off at? Or that those fics that are 'just for fun/kink' are all putting in the same level of care for how they portray pedophilia and minor characters?

Idk, this feels like a reach. I read "enjoying" as just enjoying the dynamics, the narrative, the characters, enjoying the experience of watching the plot or whatever happen. If they said "getting off" or "feeling gratification", I'd probably think they were aroused by it but they didn't.
