Fandom Problem #5707:
When people see a blog that someone runs and says "ew, they make (x thing) your whole personality!"
It's a one-topic blog, Susan. Stop equating someone's blog content with how many interests a person has.

5707: Yes, thank you. This annoys the shit out of me, because it is only EVER used in a pejorative, negative way. People see fandom and topic specific blogs all over the place. If somebody likes ATLA? They might have an ATLA blog. Or they might have a ~sexy things~ blog. Or a cars blog. Or a bug blog. But nobody ever says that the blog is the person's entire personality. That only EVER comes up when someone is trying to discredit a person they don't like and make them look unbalanced, or like their priorities are somehow not correct, or they have too much time on their hands, therefore must be unemployed or without other obligations, therefore is a loser who shouldn't be listened to.

This isn't a submission, it's a response to the ongoing mental health blog discussion.
Hey, so I'm a roleplayer who has considered making a side-blog for my mental health journey. I'm 33 years old and for a long time I didn't know what was wrong with me, until the beginning of this year, when I finally started seeing mental health professionals. I'm currently seeing two. For me it is a relief to finally be able to put a word to how I've been feeling for such a long time. Which has prompted me to want to talk about it, as I'm unraveling the mystery and am figuring out why I feel, think, and do what I do.
I have posted about it on my roleplay blog, tagged it so people could blacklist it if needed and put it under a read more so no one would have to look at it if they didn't want to and folks still have gotten upset with me and have even blocked me and unfollowed, too, which is fine, people have to do what they need to in order to feel comfortable on their own blogs, however, this is also why I have considered making a side-blog too, so no one on my main blog would have to see it all of the time.
People may think that I'm just talking about this sort of thing for attention, but I'm not. Some people will never understand what it's like to be crippled by mental illness for years and then finally feeling the sweet relief and freedom of knowing something can be done for it and there is a chance for getting better. In fact writing about it is often encouraged by therapists. Another thing, too, I'm not really allowed to speak about my mental illness to family and friends because it would damage quite a few familial relationships if I did, so it's not like I can write something up on Facebook and openly talk about it there. It just feels safer to talk about it on Tumblr where it won't get back to my family and friends.
Furthermore, I also know that there are other people out there that were/are like me. They know something is wrong but they don't have a word to describe what's wrong, and I have some hope that they will be able to hear what I have to say and that it might encourage them to go get the help that they need, rather than waiting 33 years like I did. I always think back to how I could have gotten help sooner and I just don't want others to make the mistakes that I did.
I hope everyone understands where I'm coming from in this discussion. Tumblr may truly be someone's only safe outlet... so some of you needs to stop jumping to conclusions about everything being for attention.

#5707: Not only do I completely feel this problem, but it also depresses me just how common it is. I can kind of understand why, aside from the dysfunction of whoever is an asshole enough to hate on someone for it, people are social creatures and we label and categorize things very quickly. It takes us an instant to size someone up and if all we see instantly is someone's blog... It just reminds me how unhealthy social media is. It creates even more of a separation between the first impression and who they actually are. There are so many other reasons social media isn't healthy, but I think that's an underrated one.

In response to the comment on 5707 about how they agree except for blogs about mental illness,
Speaking as someone with a diagnosed mental illness, I don't think making a sideblog about it is all that weird? The main point of a sideblog is to organize posts about a topic you care about and find community in it, which I don't think is that unusual for someone with a mental illness to want. Being able to talk about what you're going through and know you're not alone can be really helpful for coping with a mental illness, and having a separate blog can be good in case you don't want to share your personal issues on your main blog. I don't run a blog related to my mental illness, but I have a friend with a sideblog about her (diagnosed, before anyone comes at her) OCD because she wants to spread awareness, correct misinformation, and share information about what has helped her live with it. I don't see why making a blog about mental illness is any worse than making a blog about any other disability or condition.
Though I agree that some people on here are weird about it, namely 14 year olds who misunderstand what the symptoms of that mental illness are because they learned about it from Tiktok and all of their posts are memes that misrepresent what that condition is actually like. It feels wrong to generalize that to all blogs related to mental illness on here, though.

5707:
"I agree unless it's someone making an entire account about their mental disorders/illnesses. It's weird, especially when they're self diagnosed, lol. (Speaking as someone with an actually diagnosed disorder and mental illness)"
Self-diagnosis drama aside, I still think the same principle applies though. It isn't necessarily their whole personality.
I think in essence, if someone is clearly posting every few minutes, for the entire day, on any kind of blog, we can assume they might be spending an inordinately high amount of time on it, but it's not necessarily limited to blogs about mental illness. People can post about all sorts of things for attention, and even if mental illness right now is arguably trendy for kids and everywhere, in the same vein as scene kids from the early 00s, I'm not sure I would call it an outlier.

5707 Anyone who does that is really telling on themselves lol. They probably DO make their own blog their entire personality and most of the time it's not hard to assume that, with how anal retentive they get about fandom stuff that hurts no one. Antis for example think anyone who has a yaoi blog or something thinks about it 24 7 because that's all they can conceive, as they go back to their blog they spent 24 7 on because they're chronically online themselves and actually do have no other hobbies
It's projection
