a speech about goncharov i made for my public speaking class!

note: this is not exactly what will be spoken for my class, as i am not reading my speech word-for-word. however, this is an outline of the speech i will be presenting, and i thought y'all might be interested in seeing it.

Introduction:

The purpose of my speech is to inform my audience of the fake movie “Goncharov” and how it has impacted me. My goal is to inform my audience of how the fake movie “Goncharov” came to be and of the value it has. 

By a quick show of hands, how many of you have seen or heard of Goncharov before? [Quick pause as I wait for no hands – or almost no hands – to go up.] Alright. So, Goncharov was a 1973 mafia movie supported by Martin Scorsese, and has been widely regarded as the greatest mafia movie of all time. It’s about the Russian mafia in Naples, Italy, and follows a variety of characters such as Goncharov himself, Katya, who is Goncharov’s wife, Audrei “The Banker” Daddano, and my personal favorite, Joseph “Ice Pick Joe” Morelli, with actors such as Robert De Niro, Cybill Shepherd, Harvey Keitel, and Lynda Carter. So, why have you never heard of this movie before? Well, everything I just told you? It’s all a lie. It’s all made up. Goncharov? Yeah. It never actually existed. 

I remember being part of the Goncharov fandom as it first blew up on Tumblr in late 2022. It was a great source of joy for me and made a significant impact on Tumblr’s culture. I am going to show my audience how Goncharov came to be, the creativity is spawned, and briefly reflect on how the website it originated on was vital for its growth. 

So, what is Goncharov, and what is going on here?

Origins:

Goncharov was a fake movie created by Tumblr in late 2022. 

Sometime prior to August 22nd, 2020, Tumblr user ZootyCoon posted a photograph of knockoff boots they had bought that advertised a non-existent movie, Goncharov, on them, claiming that Goncharov was “the greatest mafia movie of all time.” In response, on August 22nd, 2020, another Tumblr user, AbandonedAmbition, commented “This idiot hasn’t seen Goncharov”, which was then added to the post itself by Tumblr user LoserMo. 

While ZootyCoon’s original post did receive some attention, it wasn’t until November 18th, 2022 that Goncharov truly hit it off as a cultural phenomenon, thanks to Tumblr user Beelzeebub, who posted a fan-made poster for Goncharov, receiving almost 20,000 likes and over 15,000 reblogs in three days. 

Fandom:

As it turns out, you don't actually need a piece of media to be real in order for a fandom to form around it.

Countless fanworks were created for Goncharov, including fanart, fanfiction, music, scene analysis and analysis of motifs, gif sets, memes, and so much more. As mentioned in a YouTube video by YouTuber ColeyDoesThings, there was even a time where Goncharov had more fanfiction on a popular fanfiction website than James Cameran’s Avatar, the highest grossing movie of all time. 

So much lore was being created for Goncharov in such a short amount of time that efforts had to be made to record it all. Multiple individuals attempted to create a “master copy” of Goncharov’s lore, including what is now a 48-page Google doc that includes a plot summary, brief descriptions of various scenes, and links and sources to various contributors. 

But Goncharov could not be contained just to Tumblr. Various media outlets, such as The New York Times, The Guardian, Forbes, and The Washington Post all posted articles about Goncharov, an internet phenomenon.

But, why? Why this fake movie, and why on Tumblr of all places? 

As a social media site, Tumblr has an incredibly weird culture. There are no public follower counts, no verification for users, and a whole array of weird social rules. But one thing that really makes Tumblr special is the interaction between large and small blogs alike. Because anyone can and is encouraged to create their own content and add to others’ content, something like Goncharov could very quickly become a “yes, and” game among Tumblr’s users. 

Tumblr is also very much a “fandom” site. Fanart, fanfiction, and other fanworks dominate the website, and Goncharov in its heyday was no exception. Interactions between fans and fan creators is what really causes fandoms to grow and survive, so it makes sense that Goncharov thrived the way it did considering how easy it was to find fellow fans. With no pressure to reveal your “true” self, there’s a lot less pressure when you share what you’ve created. 

Conclusion:

So, what can we learn here?

The fake movie “Goncharov” was unintentionally created by a tag on a pair of off-brand boots but didn’t truly become popular until Beelzebub’s poster. Fandom quickly grew around it, creating countless fanworks, but Tumblr’s unique culture as a social media site is what truly allowed it to thrive. 

There is joy and creativity in unusual places. Whether or not you believe Goncharov to be a waste of time, the popularity of a fake movie says something about the human fascination with stories. Thank you.

I don’t think the fandom as a whole is exactly what we think - outside of tik tok - it’s actually insanely normal .

I always see a lot of mature comments on Instagram and Reddit and Facebook .

People who talk about things like absences and rumors and nonsense- comes from the immaturity that is that platform of tik tok - and I think it should be reported and taken down- bc it’s very much a harassment tactic at this point

Don’t let people who are trying to continuously be vile take you from liking something- or sharing things about who you like on the show.

It’s funny bc those tik tok commenters on that particular video saying how Brody was mean at the stage door- are really trying to start some type of narrative that is not true -

Bc I can speak only for me- but I met him- and I thought he was insanely beautiful and kind - and very genuine with his time- and we had a very nice conversation about singing and my goal to become better than what I am now.

Another person I spoke to - told me how they felt he was probably the most genuine at the stage door than a lot of actors they had met

when you say ‘people said brody was mean at stage door’ i think it’s more likely than not because he doesn’t always take pics with fans. i seriously doubt he’s mean at stage door, esp since even the little experience where he saw my cane and leaned a bit closer and kinda gestured to the stage made me think otherwise. that’s just me though.

and yeah, i am trying, it just gets insanely difficult when im being gang piled by numerous anons abd people messaging me and it’s been like that for six months. i think im going to take a step back and just make fanart and stuff for the musical. the fan base honestly has ruined the musical for me and running my other blog has made my mental health worse but i frankly feel trapped because i know that blog is the main place people want to ask questions and i dont wanna take away the asks and anon because i know people may have questions, but its so draining and mentally i just cannot handle it anymore. and im trapped.

i really am only one person at the end of the day. and it’s insanely hard to try and keep doing this, because i don’t know when it’s going to end. i don’t know when i’m going to stop getting these messages because it does take a toll on my mental health, which i hate saying because that makes me sound like a victim, and i’m not, but i just wish i was able to help outside of tumblr

Hiiii Prism. Hey so. Wanna introduce me to Epic The Musical???? I see it on my dash all the time now but I never bothered to look up what it actually is. On purpose lol. Because at first I totally skipped over it thinking it was some Percy Jackson fanart, and then I thought it really wasn't that big of a deal, and now it seems to be a HUGE deal to so many people on Tumblr. And I enjoy the kinda not-in-that-fandom-adjacent tea-sipping vibe veeeeeery much. So. I literally do NOT know what it is. Is it like Hamilton??? Is it a Percy Jackson fanwork??? Is it neither???? You have now been given the absolute power over whatever you let me know. Because I have no clue.

Okay okay uhhh finedje. I NEVER had to pitch something to someone without the ability to just physically sit them down and like show them before cause I'm generally bad at explaining things but LEMME TRY!!!

So so, Epic the Musical is a musical concept detailing the Odyssey that is being made and like chopped up into 9 sagas! We have 8 of them now so one more to go!!!

Made by the wonderful, and very silly, Jorge Rivera-Herrans, Mr. Jalapeño himself. He wrote it with the theme of ruthlessness in mind, as in when do we adopt the philosophy of being ruthless to other people and when do we show kindness and mercy. (I may be explaining this wrong, Jorge has so many little videos explaining his process about creating Epic, i might leave a link so you can hear from the man himself)

It's not like a Percy Jackson fanmade thing, I know Jorge has read the Odyssesy and is essentially adapting it into this musical in his own way (I say this cause some people just can't comprehend it being its own thing as an adaptation). I don't think Jorge has read PJO? I could be wrong.

It could be compared to Hadestown the Musical? BUT THE ONLY SIMILAIRITY IS THE LIKE ADAPTATION OF A GREEK MYTH INTO A MUSICAL, OTHERWISE THE GENRE AND STUFF ARE VERY DIFFERENT.

I will uhhh keep note that Epic takes heavy inspiration from video games and anime which has the musical take several creative liberties and not be a one to one of the actual Odyssesy. One example of like the video game inspirations is every saga having some sort of boss battle esque song at the end, as if you are going through a video game, level by level.

And the anime inspirations are heavy in the ways Jorge uses iconic anime imagery or like I guess visual tropes in his references whenever he commissions artists to do animatics or animations.

THAT'S ANOTHER FUN THING TOO!!! Aside from the thousands of fan animatics that come out with each saga, Jorge also just commissions art, animatics and animations from artists with each new saga that he'll debut during the album's live watchparty where we listen to the whole musical up till the latest saga. So we have like fan animatics but also in a way, canon animatics and animations on how things go down.

He puts so much care into the music and the like themes and and uhhh musical terms escaping my head but he carries over chracters and their musical motifs so well throughout the story.

He also uhhh does open auditions to EVERYONE like ANYONE could audition for Epic with just leads to so many hidden gems of singers and songwriters that he just hypes up so much, he hypes up their work in Epic and their own personal musical endeavors.

Some of the amazing cast are: Teagen Earley who plays Athena, TROY who plays Hermes, Steven Dookie as Polites, Talya Sindel as Circe, Barbara Wangui as Calypso. Of course, Jorge himself plays Odysseus and he is also just incredible vocally.

HE ALSO uhhh casts his family members in this which is super fun and wholesome and I won't spoil who they play cause its such a fun treat to discover as you listen.

Aaaaaaaaaaa what else-

It is also very silly, we get quite a few silly moments and I really enjoy that. Jorge is really good with sprinkling the silly moments in between the songs and just delivering such a good experience. A lot of the silly moments just become memes and that's also a fun time.

I just love the way he adapted the musical in this very very unique and amazing thing, it's this phenomenon of like story telling and music and also just a collaboration of art between not just the cast who come from so many places but also the HUGE community and I think that's the most special part, y'know?

What introduced you to lmk? like some fanart or a tiktok edit

For me it was a nezha edit (it was a leak at the time, but obviously I didn't know it) and I loved its design so much that I decided to see lmk, previously I knew that the series existed since I really like everything that has to do with Sun Wukong (and the journey to the west and Nezha too of course)

my love of lmk was a slow burn that then sparked into an inferno

it began while i was watching OSP’s jttw summarizes videos and listening to their podcast and there were some people asking Res if she watches the show (she hadn’t and prob still has not because her reason was by simply not watching it, she wouldn’t accidentally have their style influence her own. also ensuring that her summarized videos stayed original)

then i noticed some fanart of lmk on instagram (idk how that happened tbh maybe the algorithm took my interest in fanrtists of animated movies and shows to equal “hey you might like this too!”) but since i had no clue what lmk really was and was more loyal to jttw itself, i ignored it (tho one of the fanart it’s drew really good kung fu panda fanart so i saw lmk for about a month or too before i deleted my instagram

and then i saw a lot of lmk in the comments of OSP’s video about the Six Eared Macaque chapter but ignored it still

and then tumblr polls happened

many polls were made. many ship dynamic polls were made

there was also the character of all time poll, of which i was a Sun Wukong activist and found some lmk fans who reblogged my propaganda thread

(during this time— April— I discovered Epic: the musical)

i found lmk once more in the sun/moon ship poll. it was merthur vs shadowpeach and i stayed true to my shadowpeach but i noticed one of my (then) mutual-in laws was very passionate about shadowpeach and i grew curious

i searched it up (beginning of May), somehow found a playlist with seasons 1-3 two days after i began my search, watched all of it in a day (it should be noted that i had been recovering from finals) and found myself hooked

I also felt cheated out of the shadowpeach ship because, through the eyes of my (then) mutual-in law, the ship seemed to popular on tumblr. then all the shit i see on YouTube is spicy noodles and people arguing in the comments that shadowpeach are brothers

i found out very quickly that the show did scratch a special itch in my brain (it almost didn’t if i’m being honest. i was almost put off by MK and Mei’s personalities at first but figured i would wait if our since AHiB is only the show’s pilot) and now i wanted more

i went onto twitter bc i struggles to find fanart on tumblr

i realized there was a 4th season already out (also weird discord drama???? idk i only was there for the art) AND some nice metas to dip my toes in

i leave twitter and go to yt to find the 4th season (and also bc there was a whole thing about new accounts getting called out for being “pro-shippers” so i decided to tap out) and then found out about Monkey King 2009 (which i watched to stave off the desire of s4 but this backfired bc i got obsessed with that one too and only 12 episodes are subtitled for it)

AND THEN I FIND SEASON 4

i watch it all and realize i have to wait for the s4 special, but i am more prepared for it (and now i feel more comfortable interacting with lmk tumblr) which leads to me making my own metas (this was spurred by my desire for more swk metas)

and thus i found and curated my lmk fandom experience on tumblr and satiated my brain with metas and fics and art until s4 special and then rinse and repeat until s5 :D

You've got special earplugs in to make sure the loud sound doesn't damage your hearing, and you're unaware that some fans are more interested in recording videos and taking photos to post online, your sight a rare scene at a concert so late. They've speculated if you'd join Yoongi for his tour or stay home with one of the other boys- but then he'd walked over the airport proudly holding your hand, taking you with him with no shame despite some of the public's opinion on some things that have been happening during the tour until now.

From him posting pictures of you in what's clear must be the same room he's using, to interacting with you while he's doing his livestreams. Hell- he even took you to his Late Night Show appearance with Jimmy Fallon.

It's clear to everyone that Yoongi highly possibly loves you as more than just a pet, or even a friend- and he's got no problem showing it.

Maybe that's why media and fans don't seem to talk much about the obvious signs of something more intimate going on between you behind camera lenses. For most fans is almost an open secret that you're more than just 'his puppy', fanart and even accounts solely dedicated to updates concerning the rapper and you existing in broad daylight for everyone to see.

Even if they mock him, he's not bothered- so no one even tries anymore to get a reaction from him.

Backstage, as he takes your stuff to drive to the hotel you're both staying at with you, he sighs, leaning his head on your shoulder. "The concert was fun." You say quietly, and he chuckles, nodding.

"I'm glad you had fun." He mumbles sleepily. "Fans were happy you were there too. Makes me a bit jealous. You took my spotlight." He teases, playfully pulling your tail a little.

my online fandom experience in 2007-2008:

-First learned about Death Note by randomly seeing L in an AMV on Youtube in late 2007 and being intrigued by how he looked. Have never watched an anime in my life but wanting to know more about this emo lookin' dude. Found some website where I could stream it, immediately getting spoiled for his death by somebody in the comments on episode 1 (the 2000s was RAMPANT with gleeful spoiler trolls, these were the days of people driving by Harry Potter midnight grand opening lineups for the new books to scream SNAPE KILLS DUMBLEDORE type shit)

-Binge-watched the whole show in a couple of days. Immediately haunted by the "what if"s of Lawlight and start reading fanfiction.net fics about it. Wrote a gushing review on a fanfic and start talking in emails with the writer who writes back to me. I think at the time the most popular Lawlight fic on the site was Poison Apple by RobinRocks (which I didn't read, because I didn't like reading AUs back then, nor did I like the idea of mixing Death Note with Disney princess imagery... my absolute fave fic was Coexistence is Boredom by sakurazukamori6, which was still being updated at the time)

-The Another Note novel and the How to Read 13 were already out, so most of the stuff the fans know now about the characters was already known and being used in the fan stuff by then. I bought the entire manga set at my local bookstore and read the first five volumes of it, but not the rest (because back then I was one of the people who lost a lot of interest in the plot once L was dead)

-Got invited to follow a popular fanfic writer's Death Note LiveJournal where people are doing most of the things you see them doing here, analysis and shipping and fic and memes. However a lot of the journals and communities were private and accessible by invite only, so I only ever saw stuff there as it was filtered through the journal of that one welcoming fandom friend I made

-Got into random private email conversations with the odd fan once I start posting my own fics on ff.net (I wrote one of the very first Beyond Birthday fics). At some point I remember a girl who called herself diane-chan from somewhere in South America emailing me a doujinshi she had scanlated (I think it was called Taikutsu by Balgus REC) and emailing some pics and penpal like letters back and forth. Connecting with other fans was a very slow and individual-like experience compared to something like connecting over social media is now. There wasn't much of anything like online group chats taking place in real-time, per se. I suppose MAYBE you could create one on MSN Messenger or something, but the experience of being in a fandom in general online was just much more fragmented and based on personal individual relationships, I think. Unless you were meeting up with people in person at conventions or something...

-Ships didn't have ship names like Lawlight back then! It was either called L/Light or Light/L, because whichever name came first in the pair indicated who you liked as the top (or the "seme;" people would often say "seme" or "uke "rather than top or bottom back then). They were treated almost like two totally different ships, and you definitely had to tag your fics accordingly or else people would get mad (I am very glad that ship names now exist)

-Watched the occasional fan videos on YouTube, often things like Windows Movie Maker slideshows set to music with fanart of the characters or cosplays and the like

-It used to be REALLY hard for me to find clips of the show to use or edit or anything like that. The English dub still wasn't out yet anywhere I could watch it when i was into the show in 2008, but I remember hearing L and Light's English voice clips and thinking that L's was great and Light's was a bit cringe in comparison to the Japanese one. I wanted to watch it again but I didn't want to have to have an internet connection at all times to watch it, so I bought some shitty ripped illegal DVD of the Japanese dub on eBay from China, and it came with extremely lolworthy broken English subtitles (stuff like Light reading that passage out loud in class and the subtitles saying "the wisdom of the sheepus"... that one is burned into my brain)

-Trying to connect with other fans in person about it was not really possible for me where I lived? Being into anime was considered extremely cringe at my school at the time. And other people I knew who had watched or read Death Note either simply weren't that interested in it anymore to the same degree, or were usually straight dudebros who were only into it so far as to think about which character was smarter than which

1) How did you get into AH?

Already answered, but I got into them by seeing a video somebody made on youtube with a bunch of other fandoms that were popular on Tumblr in 2014.

5) Favorite team?

Whatever the hell team name Trevor and Alfredo have now (tho Team Nice Dynamite is always right behind them in my heart)

8) Favorite AU?

Hmm favorite AU would have to be the Fake AH Crew AU just because of all the memories I have of messing around in that AU and all the great content that people have created using that AU. There's just so much to do when the characters you're playing with are literal criminals.

25) Has a video or specific moment ever made you emotional?

Not sure if this is for like sad emotional or happy emotional or whatever, but the first video I can remember off the top of my head that made me emotional in the sad way was when Meg had to host The Know after Monty passed away.

34) Have you seen the musical?

Yep I have! Watched the whole thing when it was mixed with the GTA video.

48) If you have one, who’s your favorite fic author or fan artist?

OOoohhh boy do I *cracks knuckles*

Since I know I can't narrow this down to like one author and artist I'm just gonna do a handful of the large amount of people that have created some of my favorite works and inspired me/influenced me with how I write.

So author wise I have to first give it up for @confusedeevee who without her I would most likely not be writing AH fanfic like I am today, plus she's an excellent beta, amazing writing partner and always helps me brainstorm when I need it and will listen to me rant and rave about all my au ideas even tho it's probably 3 am for her :') and her fics are out of this world, please go read them.

Next is @futureboy LIGHT OF MY FUCKING LIFE who fed (and continues to feed tbh) my alfreyco cravings and has some of the best written dialogue out there and a head full of incredible ideas when it comes to writing! They just have some of the best writing out there and they're honestly killing it with the ST fics right now.

And since we're talking about Alfreyco (because how could we not am i right??) @jusst-you-wait is honestly really to blame for me still writing AH fic to this day, because this lovely alfreyco obsession of mine started when I read her Fake AH fic about Trevor and Alfredo investigating some abandoned building for Geoff and that's all she wrote. Also one of the best hype mans out there and such a great writer!

And I can't forget @shadeofazmeinya and @sorcererinthestars who also have some of the best fics out there in my opinion. And tbh I included both of them in one thing because one is not far from the other when it comes to fics and tumblr and there places in my HEART! Love these two so much and both have them have produced such fantastic work in this fandom and appreciate that every single DAY.

Ok now with artists unfortunately there aren't as many as there used to be in the ye olden days of the fandom, but that doesn't mean we don't have some excellent artists still!

Firstly is @keeningthoughts who without them I would not have the lovely alfreyco outlast fanart that I cry over almost daily and would not have known the joys of being in a server dedicated to a podcast co-lead by two very silly boys. Clay, your everchanging art style and the art you've drawn, no matter how silly, have always made me so happy when i see them on here or twitter :3

And then @ursifors who has created some of the most awesome art in this fandom. Just the way you draw the AH members (and Jeremy lbr) is so incredible and fun to look at. Your shading and the way you draw expressions are always the best. Like the way you nail people's faces is just 👌👌👌👌

51) Any videos, series, podcasts, etc. you’d recommend to new fans?

Would definitely recommend Red Web (how can I not?) if you're into spooky things and conspiracy theories, but for general AH stuff I would recommend Off Topic because that is always a good, tho sometimes chaotic, way to get a feel for the vibes at AH. As for videos, any Between the Games and Shenanigans videos are always great to watch. Series wise, there are always MC and GTA videos, which are CLASSICS even if they're older and Play Pals which is 👌. Always recommend those. Some more recent ones would be GMOD and 7 days to die. Also the Rage Quit anniversary video they came out like two weeks ago. That was an excellent video.

I did a tier list of the Markiplier Egos, so I thought I’d share it here – and, yes, perhaps some of these ratings indicate who I like to write, sue me. So, bottom to top, here it is:

Actor: Super Hell

         I goddamn hate Actor, as you could probably figure out. He’s a prissy bitch, who deserved everything that came to him. Okay, that might’ve been a bit of an exaggeration, but Jesus Christ do I hate him, mainly for causing Damien’s death, plus everything else, but mainly that. He deserves less than Super Hell, but that is the bottom of the barrel.

E-Boy Mark: F

         Reminded me too much of my boy Bing, and I did Not like it. Plus, I have the same tiger pattern on one of my jackets, and I did not want to be associated with this E-Boy. So, F tier.

Ed Edgar: F

         I hate babies. Simple as that. Props for being a cowboy aesthetic, but that mustache knocked him back down into F tier.

Derek Derekson: F

         Need I say anything? He’s abusive and a bitch, and I care too much about my baby Eric to put him any higher. I would put him lower, but Super Hell is reserved for Actor. F.

Silver Shephard: E

         I haven’t seen anything about him, except for the skit with all the other egos, in which I also did not see much. Cool costume, but no clue. E.

Dr. Iplier: E

         Again, not much. To be honest, both of the Egos in the E tier are ones I haven’t seen much of but know about. Hence, the doctor is here. Nice catchphrase, E tier.

Yandereiplier: D

         The animation is cool, I’ve always liked horror-blood elements, and the pictures of Yandere have the red hair, which I am a fan of. However, the game itself is a point down, and he is only for the sim, so D tier.

King of the Squirrels: D

         A classic start to the Ego train, so points given, but points taken away because I am not a huge fan of peanut butter. Squirrels I love, though, so again. Hence, D tier.

Bill: C

         Okay, so I haven’t seen the video he comes from actually, but I did see one clip of him saying ‘Oh, honey, no’ and, boy, did I feel flustered, and I don’t even know why! It was just weirdly sweet and reflects the kinda stuff you see in my S tiered Egos. But, alas, he’s not all that common in videos, so C.

Bim Trimmer: C

         I don’t know either, man, he’s just a funny guy. The image I have for him is so stupid, and he’s Bim Trimmer??? C’mon. C tier.

The Colonel: C

         Being separate from Wilford, he’s kinda lacking in substance compared to him, but I get it. Cuckolded a dude, which isn’t a great start, but it’s Actor, so I don’t care. Says ‘bully’, which is fun, but he does kill the viewer, so points off for him, putting him in C.

Google(s): C

         Might be influenced by my having a fic in the works for him, but I am also a sucker for AI, android stuff. Plus, the fanart I see for him is always cute. Him being rude to Bing takes him down a notch, though, so C.

Heehoo: C

         The concept of this guy is so funny to me – like, Jesus Christ, the Markiplier runs into the wild, completely naked, save for maybe shoes, of all things, and is fine??? The long hair pushes it over D, but the lack of a voice keeps him in C.

The Nightguard: C

         It’s mainly for the musical itself, and that one moment when he leans in and says ‘I killed a guy’ because obviously. Not to mention it’s Mark singing. However, this one can be excluded from being an ego because it is basing off of a pre-established character. So, C tier.

Captain Magnum: C

         I haven’t gone through his ending yet in AHWM (sue me, I got Yancy first), but I do love pirates ;) but I don’t love beards. Personal preference, it just takes away from the face. Basically, the aesthetic alone brings it into C tier.

Annus: B

         Now, I did watch, uh, [redacted] – catch my favorite video being the A.I generated basically fanfictions – and I loved the whole concept of it! The ending, especially during covid, kinda helped me get used to death and the idea of having to die in the end. However, some of this does not extend to the ego of Annus. I feel like there was a lot more they could have done with both Annus and Unus, but I understand that most of the audience would not have wanted it to be fully cryptid and ARG-esque, so B is both the lowest and highest I can go with him. I do love suits, though. 

Eric Derekson: B

         I have seen next to nothing about this boy! And I love him :D! He’s just so cute in everything I’ve seen and read. Solid B tier for the cute side, anyway. 

The Jims: B

         Honestly, it’s a goof ego, and I like that. The stupid movements and the little side bit about WKM made me happy after the sad events, and I saw them in Space, so I’m happy to put them at B, as a collective, of course.

Monster Gulch Mark: B

         I’m a sucker for apocalypses, man. The casual murder plot caught my eye, and then the second song was a banger, too. I was super disappointed when nothing ever came out from Monster Gulch again, and I appreciate the running water thing, if you know what I mean by that. So, for both Mark in this and the musical in general, B tier.

God of Night: B

         Dope aesthetic and I am a sucker for deity-stuff. However, I do not have the attention span to watch a 3+ hour video where he is not in all of it, and was, maybe, recorded without a hard script? I don’t know, but I know I should watch it considering I have a fic queued for him. Cool concept, but I can’t watch so much of that in one go. B tier.

Noir: A

         You remember that I said I love suits, right? Well, this guy, in a disheveled suit, the noir aesthetic – one that I loved since I saw Into the Spider-Verse – and the voice over??? A tier, and I will take no comments. Also, there’s something to be said about how the lower tiers tend to have the cocky-know-it-all egos, and the higher tiers are soft guys. This, the A tier, is a weird exception.

Murdock: A

         No. 1, the murder – no. 2, the vibe – no. 3, the outfit! The moment I saw Murdock, I had to put the screen down and go for a walk. You’ve seen this man, you understand what I mean. A tier, for everything he’s involved in.

Dark: A

         This is probably lower than a lot of people would put him, and I’m still debating putting him higher, but A tier is the least I will go. Again, there’s the suit, plus, I’m a fan of the glitchy, multi-emotion thing he has going on. However, as many of you will remember, he did shove the viewer into a mirror and steal their body. Not great on his part, but he is against Actor, and the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Hence, A tier, plus he does stage himself sexily on that desk, so…

Engineer: A

         This guy is plain cute. He’s devoted, he’s hard-working, he appreciates the aesthetics! He really should be in A+ tier, considering I have a sticker of him, too, except for one tiny snag. Actor. He is the source of all my trouble and complicates things in the theory sense. Is Engineer actually Actor? We don’t know, and I don’t like to think I would put anyone related to Actor in A+. So, sorry, my dear boy, he has to be in A tier.

Bing: A+

         If you’ve seen my other posts, you may already understand why he’s here, but I will reiterate for every who doesn’t know. I don’t know what it is, but the dumb, skateboarder-bro, with a heart of gold is a thing I love. The glasses are cool, the orange I adore, and an android? C’mon, I can’t put him anywhere but A+. (I also have a sticker of him on the laptop I am currently writing this on)

Host: A+

         I had to go searching for Host after the sketch with all of the egos in it, and, boy, was I overjoyed to find him. The blind-fold and narrator bit, and a couple of fics I’ve read influenced this decision. A+ tier, but it’s a controversial one. (Another that I have a sticker of)

Wilford: A+

         Yeah, this is just where he belongs. S tier is reserved for two egos here, and so Wilford is a banger in A+ tier. The whole fruity-bisexual-timelord thing is amazing, and, as far as character design goes, oof, the fluffy hair, slightly unbuttoned shirt? I am swooning. A+ tier. (Also, a sticker)

Illinois: A+

         This guy has two belts. What a dude. And the flirty thing I appreciate, the whip cracks, as well. Him walking backwards through a bunch of traps is pique douche, but in an oh-my-god-he’s-going-to-get-himself-killed-better-help-him kind of way. Like pulling a drowning dog out of a pool and them shaking off. A+.

Can you guys guess who’s at the top of this list? If you can’t, lemme tell you. 

Damien: S

         Damien is my comfort character, and that sucks because – spoilers – he is dead. I forgive him for shoving the viewer into a mirror, solely for his adorable personality and all of the fics people have for him prior to poker night. The ‘little monster’ nickname has me squealing every time I hear it, and I could fully write an essay on his character. Fuck Actor for killing him, and fuck anyone who doesn’t think he’s amazing. Solid S tier, no questions. 

Yancy: S

         Objectively the best character. He was my first ending in AHWM, I love his song, he applied for parole??? Look at that man, listen to him talk – the accent omg – and tell me, genuinely, that you would not do anything for him. Look me in the eyes and tell me that he isn’t the light of your life. ‘Free as a buird’ – gods, he’s adorable, and a sticker that I have on the inside of my laptop, to boot!

Ride or Die ship (OTP): Harringrove (Steve Harrington + Billy Hargrove). There is something about their dynamics that draws me in. Plus fanfic writers and video editors make the pairing believable enough! (:

Most annoying ship: personally, I don't really enjoy Steddie but it is mostly because of the toxic part of their fandom. I have seen a lot of people in that fandom bullying other m|m couples… makes me wonder why people love wasting their time making others feel miserable. Just chill and reblog some stuff! | Huge shout out to Steddie fans who don't witch hunt others! And to the ones who make amazing fanart!

Second favorite ship: Lumax (canon), Jopper (canon) and Argilly (non canon). Lumax and Jopper are definitely the best couples on the show! And Argilly??? How did people come up with that ship!? It is amazing!

Favorite platonic relationship: Stobin. I must admit I was a huge fan of the couple in S3 until Robin came out to Steve. The duo is one of a kind!

Underrated ship: Munver... tiger-freak... whatever you guys wanna call it. I mean... that ship has a lot of potential! Chrissy-Heather-Robin. Love them too! The fanart people are creating for the trio is chef kiss.

Overrated ship: — .

One thing I would change in canon: the whole introducing new characters in the show only to kill them in the last episode of the season... It is a never ending cycle. Like… don't be shy, kill some of the originals. The Duffers REALLY need to learn from George RR Martin… like, have you guys read/watch Game of Thrones (A song of Ice and Fire)?. The man doesn't give a crap about what fans think! He/She/They are your favorite chars? BAM! DEAD! 💀

Something canon did right: the 80's setting (music, clothes, cars, etc. Etc.).

A thing I am proud of creating for the fandom: I haven't posted my share yet, I am planning to… maybe someday… someday, yeah….

A character who is perfect to me: Hopper. He reminds me of my dad, they have the same personality.

Character I relate to the most and why: Steve Harrington, we are pretty similar in lots of aspects. We learn through experience (rights and wrongs) and both have deconstructed ourselves and created critical thinking of our own. — also, we both have great hair ;D

The upcoming Lion King prequel hurts me personally

I really want to consistently keep this a Yugioh blog, since Yugioh is so expansive and ongoing and it’s what pretty much everyone who’s following me is here to see at this point...

But to be honest, I don’t know where else to talk about this. So... here goes nothing. The original 1994 Lion King is the single most influential movie on my life.

It was my absolute favourite movie from a very young age and for many years after. There are movies I prefer now but the influence this movie had on my life cannot be understated.

(Rant continued under the cut so I don’t flood people’s dash)

The direct to DVD sequel, Simba’s Pride, (which is actually pretty good!) is the earliest birthday gift I remember asking for, I watched it and the original over and over again, I basically watched every single Lion King related piece of media I could get my hands on (never got around to the Broadway unfortunately), including the Lion King 1 and a half, the Timon and Pumbaa show and eventually The Lion Guard, despite me being much older when that show came out. Hell, my very first crush, like ever not just fictional, was a character in this movie. (I was like 7 at the time, give me a break.) This thing was basically my first fandom.

I remember as far back as when I first got a phone with access to the Internet, I mainly watched videos about The Lion King. And among those now ancient ass videos, my favourites were videos about the lost character Kopa and more relevant to what I’m going to talk about, fan theories about Scar’s backstory. These videos, or the ones I saw when I was younger at least, were essentially numerous pieces of fanart telling the story in order, either set to music or narration explaining the respective person’s take on the story in more detail. Some of these art pieces were used so often in these videos, I still recognise them to this day. The story of these once close brothers drifting apart due to bitter rivalry spurred on by the preferential treatment given to the one who would be king was one that really fascinated this fandom, myself included. These and the Kopa videos were basically my introduction to the concept of fanfiction, which I now currently write as a hobby (for other fandoms, but still!) and am very passionate about. I still find the potential of a Scar and Mufasa backstory really fascinating but what I really wanted, more than anything, for so much of my life, was a version of this story on the big screen.

That is... until it was actually announced...

*long sigh*

I’ll be honest. Before the announcement of this prequel, the one piece of Lion King media I never intended to watch, was the CGI remake. I’m still insulted by the very notion of Disney remaking one of their most perfect timeless films, one completely comprised of talking animals, in stiff lifeless CGI and trying to pass it off as “live action.” When I talk about this movie, I call it “the Lion King remake” or “Lion King 2019.” Calling it “live action” is an insult to the animators who worked tirelessly to make it, and is an insult to the whole medium of animation. So I never bothered to watch it. And again, this is coming from the guy who watched THE LION GUARD, a Disney Junior show about the second son of Simba using his magical religion roar to fight the evil ghost of Scar in a volcano. I was willing to watch THAT, and even enjoyed most of it, and not Disney’s sham of a remake. That is how low the bar is.

It wasn’t until this prequel’s announcement, and watching YMS’s amazing video on it, that I decided to watch the remake and... yup. It is the worst piece of Lion King media ever conceived. They completely ruined the music, sucked all the character and emotion out of every single frame, and even massively fucked up the writing despite this supposedly being a shot for shot remake of the original movie. Again, YMS has a great video covering this in more detail, I pretty much agree with every one of his points. He’s only covered up to Mufasa’s hilarious butchered death so far but I have faith he’ll do a good job tearing the rest of it to shreds.

And it’s this piece of garbage that Disney is making a prequel of. This story I’ve wanted to see my entire life, and they’re going to tell it in the most flat lifeless animation in the world. How are they expecting that to work? The animation of TLK 2019 is so expressionless and stiff that it’s impossible to tell what’s going on moment to moment without the context of said moment from the original film. This prequel doesn’t have a well known movie it’s adapting. As far as mainstream media is concerned, Scar and Mufasa’s backstory has never been told in any official way. Sure, there’s the picture book where he was scraped by a buffalo in a stempede, countless fanworks where his dad scratched the fuck out of him in an an act of abuse, Lion Guard where he becomes evil after getting the scar from a venomous snake.

THAT IS REAL. I DID NOT JUST MAKE THAT UP:

Again, I unironically consider THIS better than the Lion King remake. (The song slaps ngl.) But anyways, the prequel definitely isn’t going to do any of these things. In fact, the 2019 movie kind of implies Scar got his scar from challenging Mufasa for the throne. Okay, that’s a decent idea but idea is nothing, execution is everything. And the execution of the 2019TLK, with its complete lack of facial expression, emotion in the performances, or anything to get the audience invested outside of nostalgia, how can they possibly think they’ll be able to grip anyone by doing more of the same only this time without the exact outline of a story millions of people are already invested in? Normies won’t give a shit and us more dedicated fans already have other versions of this story we prefer. 

Honestly, I don’t think even fans of 2019 movie are really going to care about the prequel. Because while I’m sure legitimate fans of it exist, the 2019 movie just didn’t stick with people. Sure, it made a shit ton of money but apart from that, it made no impact. No one talks about it anymore, apart from dedicated TLK fans like me and YMS saying how much of a piece of shit it is. As dumb as The Lion Guard could get at times, I’ll always remember it for both the insane dumb shit, and some of the genuine good stuff in it. Scar getting his scar from challenging his brother might be a more logical story but its execution isn’t one I’ll remember. The evil venom snake however? You’re damn right I’m humming that song every time I bring it up here, that shit slapped for real.

So basically... the story I’ve dreamed about seeing nearly my entire life, the spark that lit the fire to me becoming passionate about telling my own stories, is finally getting the movie I’ve always wanted and it’s almost definitely going to be a boring lifeless mess and be remembered by no one after it potentially bombs. Great. Love this studio. 😒

I was listening to music on shuffle earlier and a nightcore song played, and I was just instantly transported back to the year of our lord 2012

that got me thinking–because damn, it's kinda weird that I was OBSESSED with this one youtube channel for like two years but it was german and obviously ten years ago so. idk it didn't feel like it but I guess it WAS niche even back then. but now it's like. not to be dramatic but it did shape me as a person a little and no one even knows it!!!!!

okay so listen there was this one channel called "applewar pictures" (if you recognise that you deserve a veterans discount fr) and like 10 people worked on it. it was a big friend group who liked making videos together and most of them also had individual channels. that's the deep lore we're not getting into that

one of the main guys was this 30 year old dude who went by "chan" and was obsessed with mangas which back then was still very novel to the german youth. trust me I was there

okay but the important part was. that guy had a BUNCH of guinea pigs. he had a whole room dedicated to them and he made ANOTHER youtube channel where he would post little sketches he did with the guinea pigs. they were all named after food items and he gave them all distinct characters and voices. to a kid that was the FUNNIEST shit ever. are you with me so far

now, the plot thickens. that channel attracted a fan artist who drew the guinea pigs as humans, and she started working together with the applewar crew and. sit down you're not gonna believe this. PRODUCED A GERMAN MANGA ABOUT THE HUMAN GUINEA PIGS. YES I OWN THAT IT'S IN A BOX IN MY ROOM

knew about the whole taric/ez ship being created as a homophobic joke and had to see a lot of it in 2012-2014 years (note: not fun to wade in old posts with those homophobic imagery)

but what really fucks me up is the fact that ezlx shippers during that time were just as homophobic (and probably worse) because they basically used the "it's homophobic" card to make their ship seem holy and pure and good

like. the only reason why shippers (especially before taric rework) claimed ezlx was 'sweet and wholesome' was likely due to the fact that they constantly made trez look extremely problematic and predatory, sometimes making rapeface jokes. (thinking about this now, ambessa is getting a similar treatment without all the rape jokes; but instead mlm artists will draw her predatory and ez extremely scared of her and their ship as 'the superior love', oh how history repeats itself)

yes, this ship existed. and it was loved by most of the fandom. but tfgr existed back then !! and a lot of the ezlx shippers who supported ctvi had no trace of mlm content of tfgr

another thing to note is probably the fact that people were dead set on straight!ez or homo!ez; while there were shippers that enjoyed both het and homo pairs for him, the word "bi" was NEVER mentioned during those years. not only was this era homophobic, but no one knew what a bisexual was !!

anyways, it was really hard to find decent trez content that wasnt like blantantly homophobic. yes there were some content made with "joke" intentions, but sometimes it had a high quality to it that it cancels out the homophobia (ex: someone creating a video edit with good music 'as a joke', but sir, it is no longer a joke if you spent more than 2hrs making an amv for them)

another thing want to touch on is the that het!ez group was trying to do everything they can to prove that ez is a cishet male. basically the whole "you're a bad person if you assume a guy is gay based on his physical appearance" (the same thing happened to vi where people said it was 'judgemental' to call her lesbian just because of the way she dresses!1!1)

anyways, they were hellbent on proving that ez was a real man and forbid people from making him look gay in 2014

(a lot of this behaviour checks out too because back in 2013-2014, my middle school ass was fighting cishet men to allow SFW CONTENT of gay ships to exist in a fandom of mine)

but thats when you look at the more 'popular side' of the fandom. because over on the side, in a corner, the fujoshis were cooking. the varus/ez shippers built their city out of nothing and made fanart like no tomorrow. (they were working harder than talon/ez!!)

the varu/ez ship eventually faded out though because more people were getting into talon/ez and ez/ko after 2014

it's kinda funny how people claimed taric to be "the gay man" for ez, but ez was being shipped with the ACTUAL gay character (with two gay men inside of him) aka varus 2017

the ship that the fujoshis supported

around 2015, a new wave of ez fans seemed to have loosen the whole 'cishet ez' agenda, but people were still favoring ezlx over trez because of 'canon proof' (people who only ship based on canon only, please get out of my house) anyways, trez was still getting homohobic treatment or purposefully isolated

the only people who actually treated it like a ship were the fujoshis on pixiv fucking bless those artists (yes it was yaoi, but the fujoshis were treating them as a romantic healthy couple like ctvi, hoping those artists have a good life of prosperity)

then 2016 happened

no one saw it coming. jinx ended homophobia with her star guardian skin. the audience loved the cinematic with her and lux. (madoka magica was huge in 2014, and honestly any magical girl yuri was still doing numbers).

when people were beginning to ship lux with jinx due to their chemistry in 2 cinematics, all gay ez ships were now legal !!

because in 2017, there was a specific surge of taric/ez fanart !! but it wasnt homophobic !! people were were creating unironic, sweet (sometimes horny because people are just horny) fanart and fanfic of them !! it geuinely warms my heart

although, theres still some anti-trez people out there; not the homophobes, but theyre lgbt users who feel like they shouldnt be shipped due to it being created out of homophobia in the first place (it's definitely out of good intentions, but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. speaking as an lgbt person, it seems worse to allow the ship to remain as 'an icon of homophobia'. it would make the homophobes MORE angry people ship trez as /pos). if you keep treating that ship as homophobia, then youre letting the homophobes win

anyways lets fast forward to 2024

ez is trans. ez is bi. a ton of ez fans are able to enjoy him in however they want through headcanons and ships. from 2014 'prove that ez is a cishet male' to 2024 'trans guy who is free to wear pink stockings and skirt'. it's glorious. the people crave ez getting pregnant.

anyways, it's an absolute nightmare to wade through past blogs that insist on him being the male-gaze videogame character (dont ever reblog because it makes me uncomfortable just to see)

in 2014, some people often tend to underanalyse him too. he was basically reduced to a skirt chaser or 'the idiot on the side'. then 10yrs later, my server (full of ez fans) are constantly having unhinged essay discussions about his character for the sake of fanfic. like yeah 2023-present, he's a chewtoy, but some of the ez stans who want to see him pregnant ARE THE SAME PEOPLE who have created entire 10 pages of notes about his lore.

yes, this study seems really negative on the ezlx shippers. however, it's from my observations after having to wade through a ton of homophobic posts (some in-your-face, others barely noticable). horrible experience.

not saying all of the shippers are bad, but it's just awful to see that many of them brag that their ship was the most holy and lawfully 'right' by projecting harmful stereotypes/imagery onto trez

there probably were anti-ezlx users during the time, but havent really encountered them (probably an extreme small number because a lot of the gay!ez side of the fandom tended to stay in the corner and do their own thing)

honestly there could have been been more posts for everything about this part of the fandom, but due to the 2018 tumblr ban, cannot really take nsfw content into account for my observation
