31 Days of Witchcraft Day 27
Famous witch that you favor?
Um... In the realms of someone not from a story? None. To be honest, I generally don’t favor a lot of famous people. In the witchy community, I don’t especially just because I’ve noticed a trend of when witches become a certain amount of famous, they tend to lose contact with what got them there in the first place. It isn’t even a one-off thing (as there is one witch in particular that I openly dislike and I will NOT be sharing the name of), but I have seen this in witches in music, writing, etc.
As far as stories go? Well, if we go loosely on the term witch? Magnus Bane. Yes technically he is half demon, but he is still technically human blooded with magic. Witch. No, wait! Give me a minute to explain. He is sure of himself. He works for what he wants; he loves. Is he perfect? No. But he knows his power and how to use it. If that isn’t what we strive for... besides, I want that man’s wardrobe!

Melpomene Sarchissa Jones
Melpomene Jones is a name that has since become infamous in Wizarding America. Born in Billings, Montana on April 24th of 1919 the half-blood witch was the only daughter of her two parents Carmine and Ramona Jones. Ramona Jones who was ecstatic to finally have a daughter after giving birth to 4 boys spoiled Melpomene with whatever she desired, this struck Melpomene’s brothers with envy over their mothers attention. Once she reached age 11 Melpomene was accepted to Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, her mother splurged on her buying her all the newest and most exquisite things. Once arrived at Ilvermorny the young Jones was sorted into Horned Serpent, with both the Horned Serpent and Wampus statue responding to her presence. As she grew into her teenage years Jones discovered her influence over some of her male peers, Jones was after all known as one of the prettiest girls in school. She flirted with boys to get them to do everything from do her homework to bully girls she didn’t like. Jones found an unhealthy enjoyment in manipulating men and sought out how to do so more affectively. Through extensive months research she soon became a expert in pheromonal magic and practiced her new found skills on boys at her school. Though the spells did make her more likable they were only temporary and could be broken far too easily for her liking. It wouldn’t be until after her graduation from Ilvermorny that she would go even farther for her thirst for power. Melpomene moved to Chicago immediately after graduation, with her mother paying for all her expenses including her new home. Melpomene spent 5 years living in the city not having to do any work what so ever to keep up her life style as her mother was still paying for it all. This was when she invited all of her male friends from Ilvermorny to a party so they could all reunite, it was at this party she would cast a preeminent Cupylaius Curse that would enchant the men into a servant like state for her. With her new found followers she would extend her reach to have dozens of cursed servants at her disposal. Over the next 8 years Jones would rise to be the leader of one of the greatest Wizarding gangs known to America, she entitled them “The Erotes”. The rest of the Jones family was none the wiser of Melpomene’s true doings while rising to power, only that she was coming into money very quickly and growing independent from them. This infuriated her brothers who had worked hard to get where they were, and two of them ,Kabiri and Vulco, went to investigate just how she was coming into her wealth. The two visited their sister, seeing the luxury she was living in and her 3 mysterious butler-like servants. They discreetly tried to figure out how she obtained all this while catching up which she made up an elaborate lie. Melpomene was nearly in the clear until one of the butlers dropped a plate, the butler instead of cleaning it immediately dropped to one knee and said “I’m sorry darling” in a cowardice voice. That’s when Vulco became overcome with years of resentment and shock and he aggressively accused his sister of using dark magic to control these men. Melpomene couldn’t risk her secret getting out and order her 3 servants to kill her brothers, with the might of all 3 servants and Melpomene, Vulco and Kabiri died. Melpomene cut off all contact with her family after this leading them to assume the worst. 6 years after this incident with the Erotes being one of the leading gangs in Wizarding America, Jones was brought to justice by Auror Javier Quezada. Quezada had been working under cover for over a year as one of Jones’s Erotes. He worked his was up the Erotes until he was awarded a private moment with Jones in her Bed Chamber, this is when Javier apprehended her and forced her to release the men from their curse. Jones later had a hearing including dark details of what the formerly bewitched men had seen her do to those who had displeased and was sentenced to life in Cacoethes Prison on January 17th,1951. After Melpomene’s incarceration there were rumors that her mother was so desperate to have the perfect daughter that she bought illegal potions during her pregnancy to make sure she had a girl and also for her daughter was beautiful and intelligent. Potions such as these are illegal due to how they have had a recorded history of affecting the unborn child’s mentality. Some said it was ironic that the birth of Melpomene could’ve been due to the Wizarding blackmarket and so would her end. However, these rumors have never been confirmed.

Celebrity Witches*
*Rumors have been circulated about many celebrities practicing Wicca or Witchcraft. In this post I will try to only mention people who have openly talked about practicing.
Tumblr media
Heather Graham - In June of 2009 the “Hangover” actress described the practices of her coven, The Goddesses. “We burn things — honoring the elements of earth, wind, air and fire. You do spells...We did this thing where we were calling on the wind and the air and this whole storm started on my roof… It was amazing…empowering.”
Tumblr media
Sully Erna - The lead singer of Godsmack has been very open about his belief in Wicca “Wicca helped me a lot, in my personal life, but we recorded a good album and got signed,"
Tumblr media
Fiona Horne - Though Horne, who hails from Australia, is most widely recognized for her books on Wicca and Witchcraft, she's also known for fronting the Austrailian band Def FX, for her Playboy spreads, and for her short lived acting career on Mad Mad House.
Tumblr media
Wendy Rule - Aussie musician Wendy Rule is very open about her practice and often incorporates lyrics about paganism into her music and song titles, such as “Hecate”, “Elemental Chant”, “Circle Song”, and “Dance of The Wild Faeries”.
Tumblr media
Courtney Love - The Hole front woman had never attempted to hide her practice in the spotlight. On the TV show “Later...With Jools Holland” she claims that she Hexed an ex-boyfriend (said to be Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins) and that he lost his hair because of it. It is supposedly what the song “Violet” is about.
Tumblr media
Francis Bean Cobain - Like mother like daughter. In March of 2015 Cobain took to twitter to share a little tidbit about her family tree. “Eclipse moon tonight! @Courtney has legit bruja blood in her ancestry. So basically my lineage makes me a sarcastic witch-hick. Party” she wrote.
Tumblr media
Carlton Gebbia - The “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star is very open about her pagan ancestry and her practice. “I am Celtic, obviously, and I am pagan witch. Yes witch! My grandmother practiced, and I am a solitary practitioner, have been for decades.“
Tumblr media
Fairuza Balk - Though some sources state that Balk has since ceased practicing Witchcraft, the “Craft” actress owned the LA based Magick shop; Panpipes and was a practicing Wiccan.
Tumblr media
Azealia Banks - The controversial rapper has been very open about her practice. Banks posts witchraft-related pictures on Instagram and talks candidly about it in the media. Banks is no stranger to controversy and recently made headlines for stating that “So all I'm trying to say is that black people are naturally born SEERS, DIVINERS, WITCHES AND WIZARDS” (Twitter @azealiabanks Jan 10th, 2015)
Tumblr media
Mindy Kaling(?) - Since March 2014 the comedian has been dropping subtle hints pertaining to witchcraft.  Kaling posted a photo of the Supermoon on her Facebook page with the caption “I’m a witch so tonight is huge for me”. Though Kaling has stated several times over social media that she is a witch, no official confirmation of her practice has been offered.
Tumblr media
Gerard Way - The former My Chemical Romance front man turned solo artist has posted on his Twitter account about his study of Chaos Magic in recent months.
Honorable Mentions:
These celebrities have been “outed” by fellow celebrities and Witches, but they themselves have not confirmed these rumors and/or there were no reliable sources about their practice.
Chrissie Hynde, Sarah McLaughlin, Tori Amos, Cybil Shepard, Deepak Chopra, Bjork, Grimes, Kate Bush, Brooke Candy, David Bowie (he, himself, did not practice but believed in many aspects of Witchcraft.

Cala Ismene MaLoon Cala MaLoon was born into a enslaved African-American family in Talladega, Alabama on October 28th 1767. Growing up as a slave was obviously not easy for any young individual but in Cala’s case it was much more peculiar. It was obvious from a very early age that MaLoon was no ordinary child as she would rarely cry as a newborn and on the cold winter nights after her birth the small house her family lived in would have a newly acquired warmth to it. The no maj family assumed they had just built up a stronger resistance to the cold but little did they know their daughter was unconsciously using magic to keep herself warm. When she got older even stranger things began to happen such as the time when her and her sister were working in the stables and one of the horses began to go on a sudden rampage, scaring her sister until in the blink of an eye the horse was detained by some near by rope. When MaLoon reached the age of 11 a mysterious woman came on the middle of the night to her family’s small house, she explained that their daughter was a witch and that she must go to Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to hone her abilities. The family were both scared of losing their daughter and of what their owners would do if she went missing. The professor broke a major law in the statue of secrecy at the time and freed the family from slavery by modifying the memory of their former slave owners. The professor then took the MaLoon family north where they would be safer and was able to find them a home in a no maj community. With them and their daughter safe they decided to allow her to go to Ilvermorny, upon arrival MaLoon was sorted into Wampus. It wasn’t long before MaLoon would grow a reputation for herself as many other students wanted to know about the no maj world and her life as a slave, MaLoon was able to educate her classmates on how wrongly African-Americans were treated in the no maj world, leading them to want to help enslaved no majs despite their constant teachings to not interfere with no maj society. As MaLoon grew older she was at the top of her Defense Against the Dark Arts class and quiet the duelist. Once graduated MaLoon had no intention on sitting still while no maj African-Americans were enslaved. She had gathered a small following of some of her former Ilvermorny peers, together the group of 8 called themselves the the League of African American No maj Deliverance (LAAND). MaLoon led her secret organization to free two dozen enslaved families and memory modify the owners. The group would retire when on a mission to free a small family of slaves in Williamsburg, Virginia. The mission was nearly successful until the no maj slave owners awoke and started firing guns at the League and the slave family while running through the Virginia woods. It being late at night the owners shot blindly and the league was forced to defend themselves, when this duel was finished with MaLoon firing a Full Body Bind Curse on the final slave owner that was conscious, she discovered that she had lost her League member, Wiley Perkins, and the mother of the enslaved family to the no maj weapons. MaLoon continued with the mission, returning the no make to their home and modifying their memory and freeing the slaves to a safe place while also taking the corpses for burial. MaLoon passed away at the age of 98 just after no maj slavery had been abolished in America. MaLoon secretly defied the American Statue of Secrecy for years to do what was right and seen as a hero after her death where historians discovered her deeds through her diaries. A portrait of her has a permanent residence in the Wampus common room of Ilvermorny where when students ask for advice she usually says her credo “if the rules aren’t broken, we will be”

5 Iconic Pop Culture Witches #halloween #witchywomen
“Into the air, over the valleys, under the stars, above a river, a pond, a road, flew Cecy. Invisible as new spring winds, fresh as the breath of clover rising from twilight fields, she flew.” – Ray Bradbury
Witches are those most mysterious beings that have perplexed and enchanted people since the dawn of human existence. Although perceptions about witches and witchcraft have constantly…

The Melting Charm First used in Botswana, Africa by witch Lefa Marais. Marais was always a talented and ambitious witch, being taught at Uagadou School of Magic. Great things were always expected of her and after her schooling it was not long before she became a renown Charm creator. The first of Marais spells to hit the mainstream was her melting charm. Though there had been other charms capable of dissolving, burning through, or wasting something away. None had swept the African Wizarding public like hers, mostly do to its effectiveness and how quickly it melted away objects. When Marais presented this spell to the Botswana Ministry she had a wall put in front of her, she then shouted the incantation and within seconds the wall was a puddle on the floor. This charm has been abused by thieves but not long after its creation an anti-spell was released.

Anti-thieving Spells These types of spells usual have a creative way of avoiding capture. Records have shown herbology books sprouting vines from its pages and entangling them to museum portraits giving off high pitched wails. On the other end of the spectrum much darker spells can be placed such as in the case of Daisy Penromp who a cat burglar who stole a valuable necklace from and old woman (who she had no clue was a witch) when Daisy adorned this necklace she was bewitched and went into a murderous rampage. Muggle authorities took her in and sentenced to life in prison for the death of 4 muggles.
Gringott’s Bank is known to place anti-thieving spells on many of their customers belongings. While the simplest vaults will get a simple locking spell or two, vaults that are much fuller will be granted much darker spells to protect their valuables. These enchantments may include the Gemino Curse to bury the robber under thousands of golden goblets, crushing them. To Self Protection Charms with a dark twist, cursing object to attempt to kill their robbers.
Gringotts is also known to sometimes use magical creatures to guard their vaults. When choosing a creature to protect your belongings you should be very cautious. One who is dreadful at riddles wouldn’t choose a sphinx. The same as someone is in inadequate at a sunlight charm wouldn’t choose a gargoyle. And any witch or wizard with a sympathetic heart couldn’t bear to see the inhumane way security dragons are treated (for more information please read The Injustice of our Fire Breathing Friends by Rickshaw Hasenkamp). In 1946 American wizarding entrepreneur requested to have a Wampus Cat as his vaults guardian. This worked out just fine until the feline beast started growing an immunity to sleeping charms. The Wampus took the lives of 8 goblins and 4 wizards before being put down. The request for Wampus Cats as vault security has since been banned.
