My grandad was the king of roses. He may not have had much in the way of money, but he had a council house with a big garden. Remember those? He used the back garden to grow veg for the family, but the front he allowed for roses. And so many of them. One rose, the name of which has disappeared in the mists of time was a glorious red climber with the most beautiful and powerful scent. He took a cutting many many years ago and planted it in my mother’s garden. Now we have a garden big enough for it, my mother took a cutting for me. This is the first year it’s bloomed. I miss my grandad a lot. He’s been gone a long time now, but I’m so excited to have one of his roses in my garden. It feels like a part of him is nearby.
