Something I've been tossing around my head is that...it's something we all know, working with medieval material -- the stuff we're working on is TOO BROAD to really do it justice in a 100% faithful way. Because in order to be satisfying for a modern audience, you have to fill in the gaps. (That isn't something I've alone noticed -- a certain author who I had the chance to have in the hotseat recently noted it, as have my undergrads when it comes to their assessments of CMT -- it's incredibly laconic, because it has to be in order to cover over 20 years and a massive cast of characters.)

So I have two options, if I had Elon Musk levels of wealth to do whatever I wanted:

Full television show, ideally one that covers the entire book of invasions, so we get to meet the Fir Bolg BEFORE the Tuatha Dé's invasion. Even if we are just covering the two battles, I want "classic BBC historical miniseries" length -- I, Claudius; the War and Peace with Anthony Hopkins as Pierre, 1995 Pride and Prejudice (okay, ONE of these things is not like the others...or is it...but you see my Vision.) I don't necessarily want 7+ years out of it, but I do want it to be able to cover 12+ episodes of about 45-50 minutes, so you can really capture everything in a way that fleshes out the characters and gets into their heads while also leaving the actual battle as the climax everything's been building up to. Show off how fucked up both the Tuatha Dé AND the Fomoire are, show off Eochaid mac Eirc's reign + Sreng's fucked up place in it, show Bres' fall from grace and Lugh's rise (and foreshadow his fall), show the Dagda's family off, Indech's family dramas, give Balor a full arc where we see that he ISN'T just a monster, so it's more tragic to see where he eventually lands up.

(Alternatively for TV shows, in keeping with my "Tochmarc Étaíne as a Xianxia fantasy show....look...all I'm saying is that CMT would do ROUNDS in the Chinese fantasy market and it kills me that thus far they've been deprived. I also trust the Chinese fandoms to toss in even more subtext.)

My ultimate dream adaptation...probably a Takarazuka musical. Since you only have two hours to get the nuances across, I'd elect to follow a single character. And I *should* say that it should follow Lugh, but this is my *dream CMT adaptation that I would be pouring millions of dollars into bribing Zuka for*, so no. We're covering Bres' life, starting with him as an idealistic young man who believes he can make something for himself despite not knowing who his father is, ending with either his defeat during the battle or his death at the hands of Lugh, who is the Token Homoerotic Zuka Rival. (And might have black hair to highlight this, which...ngl, I've seen enough black haired Breis that turnabout's fairplay there.) My ideal vibes would be something between "A Passage Through the Light" (which covered Robespierre's life), Don Juan, XCalibur, and the Kunze/Levay Mozart! (which I'm not really fond of but does have some bangers.) (It's like the idealized version of Kunze and Levay's work that exists in my head.) Still with the glamor you'd expect from Zuka, which is, imo, the only way to really highlight Bres' looks and the way he's described, as well as the beauty of the Tuatha Dé as a whole, but with this dark edge that gets darker as we approach the battle and the final face off between Lugh and Bres, as both sides come together at the end to mourn the lost potential. (And because it's my self-indulgent version of things...he and Sreng wouldn't be explicitly a couple on stage, but it would still be very clear, after the second act which starts with Bres in exile as his young rival, Lugh, comes into the picture, that he and Bres got together, with Sreng acting in some ways as both Bres' own personal morality chain and his own personal Calpurnia, watching Bres' decay and not being able to do anything.)

I'm quite a bubbly person that says some messed up stuff sometimes. Quite the big extrovert with trust issues and lack of self esteem. If it counts then I'm fairly intelligent and top of my grade. I like helping out my friends but I'm competitive and can be jealous- I'm labeled as the class child and therapist. I value privacy and honesty and loyalty and stubbornness are my most noticeable traits. I won't consider myself athletic but I'm not entirely out of shape either. I enjoy the great outdoors and rather spend time around friends and family then being alone. I enjoy reading fantasy or mystety novels. Plus I tend to be considered creative. That’s quite all right if you don’t want to disclose your appearances! Ace totally understands. Besides, when he first meets you, it’s not like he’ll care too much about your appearance anyway. In fact, regardless of how good you look, what clothes you wear, or how you carry yourself, he’s going to make fun of you anyway. (Seriously, you better look out when you first meet him, Ace isn’t one to pull back on his punches when he has his sights on a new target).

Thankfully, that’s just the first meeting—and way before he gets to know the real you. Your extroverted personality and your competitive nature is what intrigues Ace. While he may think of you as a target, eventually, he realizes that you are so much more than what you appear. 

For starters, you definitely are one of the smarter people he knows. (Yes, this is a dig at Deuce and no, he doesn’t feel bad about that). At this point in your relationship, he might still think of you as a means to an end. He’s a slacker and likes to take the easy way out. Can you blame him if he asks for help for homework, but ends up copying everything word for word? Or, if he were to skip out on his classes that he always asks you for notes? Ohhhhh… Never mind. You don’t like studying. Ahhhh, looks like he’ll have to take advantage of you another way. 

His terrible ways of befriending you only increases when he realizes just how much you like helping your friends. Don’t worry, he’ll eventually stop. It’ll take a lot, but when he sees just how angry you can get… Oh boy… He’s not one to be afraid of people who lash out when angry, but consider him scared (and in awe) of your aggression. Remind him to never get on your bad side ever again. 

Ace’s respect for you grows exponentially when he sees you take charge. He’s not much of a follower himself, but as a student of Night Raven College, even he has to admit that not everyone can be veritable leaders. As your relationship grows, he’ll slowly realize that he’ll follow you most everywhere. If you do fail in the future, whether it be on a school project or serious matters, know that he’ll always have your back. 

Sometimes, Ace will make fun of you for being such a teacher’s pet, but it’s all in great fun. It’s not like the teasing from before, this time he wants to make you laugh. 

Speaking of which, if you sass him back during arguments or if he says something mildly offensive, he will be the one laughing. He’s still not sure if it’s because your quick wit is surprising or if he truly adores how you make him feel, but he can’t deny that the mirth he expresses is genuine. You make him want to be more honest around you—and around others too! (Please don’t ever tell Deuce that he thinks that he’s a good friend despite the fact that he never shows it).

On the other hand, sometimes it’s not your quick wit and humor that makes Ace laugh. Sometimes, it’s the things you say that are either way out of context that'll go over people’s heads or the fact that you say the most messed up things. Add the whiplash he can get from listening to you talk to your closest friends and then doing a heel-face turn to an upperclassman or a professor, and it’s a recipe for disaster for Ace. Try as he might, his attempt at playing the cool, unaffected freshman is no more. He will utterly break down into inconsolable giggles and it’s going to be all your fault. 

(Yes, he’ll blame you, but on the inside, he’s eagerly waiting the next time he’ll get to be with you).

(Is this the point where Ace realizes that he’s fallen for you? Possibly. But like how most things go with Night Raven College students, he’ll never admit it). 

Eventually, though, when one of you confesses (it’s not Ace, it’s not gonna be Ace, but if you go first, he will tease you for it while blushing and stuttering on the inside), he’ll make sure that the dates the both of you on are amazing and memorable! Go take him out to enjoy the great outdoors! He’s more of a city boy at heart, but he’ll appreciate you teaching him the ropes for how to survive in the wild—it’ll come in handy during certain school events. However, sometimes, Ace will host dates with you that are easygoing and soft. Sometimes, you’ll hang out at a cafe where you can enjoy good food and drinks while laughing over stupid videos that you watch on your phones. Other times, you'll spend rainy days inside snuggled on the couch together. 

Either way, when you’re together like this, Ace hopes that you enjoy being together like this. 

Because… When Ace falls for someone, he falls hard. He loves your loyalty and stubbornness. He loves your quick wit and humor. But most of all, he loves that you’re his.

A Fairplay story

"Five, six, seven, eight," slipper clad feet moved across the clearing as Ty listened to their music. A pivot, a twist, and they were airborne. Their steps were just as sure as they had been upon the land, head tipping back as their back arched. A laugh escaped them as they danced. Their round face would have lit up the most somber room in these stolen moments.

Ty never danced around people anymore. Not for a long time. It had scared one of their friends in high school. They had been so excited to show Matt the thing that they loved more than almost anything. Their head shook as a shiver flinched its way over russet skin. Steps as light as air, the fae had said. She'd made good on her word, at least.

They kicked off of the trunk of a tree, using the momentum to give themself more height as their steps quickened. Unbeknownst to the human, eyes peeked out of the underbrush, caught up in the movement of the dancer. Whispers broke out as they moved even higher, and dark eyes widened.

There was a loud crack of a branch, and Ty stumbled in midair. Their eyes snapped open as they began to fall, and curses streamed from their lips as they reached out and caught onto the branch of a tree. The sound of flesh hitting wood was loud and knocked the wind out of them. Startled noises and a singular, cackling giggle broke out in the underbrush as Ty gasped for air.

One of their hands reached up to tug a few twigs from their inky curls. They should have stayed in the yard to practice, but it was hard enough to keep people from whispering these days, especially with the things Mei had been getting up to. Not that Ty begrudged their roommates anything, but people talked. Their curious eyes darted over the trees as they shoved themself into more of a sitting position.

"I greet you, Neighbor. Neighbors? Was this clearing being used? I was told it wasn't anyone's currently, as it was too close to the Gardens," Their eyes kept dancing along the trees as they watched for movement.

"Who told you that? The Fire-head? She has no authority here," the words were sharp and curious as the fore slipped out of the woods. Dark, intelligent eyes met Ty's as the fae tipped its head back to get a better look at the human. It was a short, lithe thing, some kind of brown pelt wrapped around its waist over a dress that looked to be woven from some kind of reeds. "And who might you be?"

"If Fire-head is who I think it is... maybe," Ty's nose wrinkled in thought as they considered the question. "You may call me Swan."

"Why are you still up the tree like a bundle of mistletoe, Swan? Surely you can find your way down," The fae's teeth were sharp as it watched Ty, amusement bright in its eyes. It hadn't expected to come across anyone today, and this was too delicious an opportunity to pass up.

"All the better to get a view of your lovely self, Neighbor. Might I ask something to call you in return?" In truth, Ty hadn't spotted a good way down yet, but they could tell that admitting that would probably be a bad idea right now.

"Pebble. Call me Pebble." The fae scurried closer, and pressed its hands against the trunk of the tree as it looked up at the human. Small black claws dug into the bark of the tree as Pebble sniffed a little up at their current entertainment.

Ty leaned back against the trunk of the tree, honestly feeling somewhat better for being out of arm's length of their conversation partner. "Were you alone then, or?"

Pebble scurried in a circle around the tree before looking back up at Ty with a little chirruping noise. "No."

They rolled their eyes at the fae, trying to get a feel for what exactly they were interacting with. Pebble was short and lithe, with short hair that looked to be damp with little beads of moisture clinging to it. Its skin was the mottle brown of seashells, and its eyes were so dark as to appear black from lid to lid. And then there was its attire. Maybe some kind of river creature?

"If you dance for me, you will be allowed to depart this space unmolested.." The fae let out a chittering noise as it folded its hands beneath its chin.

"I will dance for you for the space of one song, no more no less, and I will choose the song. These are the stipulations I ask. And I will depart at the end of the dance, no later." Ty  tilted their head with a raised brow.

"So it shall be."

Right, now to figure out a way down. Ty twisted and swung their leg to try to get a better position before they pushed themself to standing. One of their feet skidded slightly on the branch, but they remained silent other than an intake of breath before they began to move from branch to branch, lower.

With a huff of breath, they finally managed to drop down to the ground, only to be bet with an outstretched hand.

"Dance with me, Swan, let me see if your grace persists."

Ty's eyes widened as they looked down at the hand before raising a finger. "First, a song, of course... that was the agreement."

"But of course." There was an edge of something under those words that sent Ty'es eyes flickering over and then past the fae, into the woods before they managed to steel themself and set their phone to playing something quick and light.

One should never dance with the fae, they say, and Ty was quick to learn why as they took Pebble's slim hand in theirs. To dance with a fae was to invite enchantment, and no amount of charms sewn into their jacket was preventing that today. Not with the quick warmth that slotted so easily into their palm and the dark intensity of Pebble's eyes that entrapped them and wound its way through their mind.

The steps were quick and playful as the fae allowed itself to be led into the dance, each step and leap taking the two higher. One of Ty's arms wrapped around the fae's waist and brushed against the pelt that lay wrapped around its hips, and it shuddered slightly as their hand tightened almost painfully in theirs.

It was some time later that Ty's mind cleared to the sight of a street, and rather a lot of pain. They tried to lever themself upward, but their legs, their feet would not support their weight. With a hiss of breath, they glanced down to see the state of things. Their shoes were caked with river mud and the soles of the slippers looked to be worn through., Wonderful.

In the first week of the IPL, 14 gaming ads may have violated ASCI code
