The screaming staircase reread
notes made whilst reading my paperback copy of the book
also the foreward where Stroud talks about the show and his first image of the story has me feeling so many things (I love this bookmark so much)
16th October 2024
3 I love the opening
4 Lockwood’s sillyness
5 “I spied a movement: something shifting in the halls black depths”
6 “all the usuals emotions featured” glad that the law states part was give to Lockwood in the show
9 “when entering the house…” I love this bit and the house description and “halls, landings and staircases are the arteries and airways of any building”
Bright death-glow, the landing on top feeling would never come across on screen “then we find ourselves a ghost”
15 ‘It’s the simple things that matter most”
16 “already checked everything back in the office’ did you though?
17 “lamplight glimmered darkly in his flop of hair” and “irony is cleverer”
17th October 2024
19 Harry Crisp
20 “she felt as if something was looking for her, that it knew she was there, but couldn’t find her…”
23 “a nail being hammered into wood” love the implications for this because how would Annie know the process of what Fairfax did to conceal his crime?
27 “scary things with your eyes” don’t blame George
29 “I saw a girl sanding there”
31 I love the terms being explained even though we have a glossary
33 Lucy’s sing song voice
37 Iron to the face.
40 “It’s my responsibility”/ “to make bad decisions?” Lmao “Sun coming out, Lockwood’s glare softened to a grin”-> what tipped you off that Mr Hope was a geologist?
47 knocked the filings
51 “She was prettier than me”… “she looked to be like the kind of girl I’d always instinctively disliked” internalised misogyny Ding! Ding!
53 description of body
55 “would you call that even the slightest bit controlled? Nope I would not”
18th October 2024
57 the locket! I love this description
60 “sooty grin”… “suspended together between heat and cold”
66 Highgate Terror and the Mud Lane Phantom
68 the terror of the abuse not being finished with death… seven girls? Lucy is baby
72 Penny Nolan + pretty field of flowers
73 mustard coloured jackets and first sunrise corporation
74 Fittes Manual for Ghost-hunters; all sisters apart from Mary left home; advancement and ambitions; all her team died as “Jacob began to lose his nerve” (you know in the show they changed the name to Moorgate Mill? Real place in Wessex apparently)
80 “more accurate” piss off and an update on what happened to the mill and leaving for London
19th October 2024
84 corner shop my love
87 Umbrellas, walking sticks and rapiers
88 Lockwood smile, green and white spotted handkerchief “Almost here”
90 Murton Colliery Horror
92 “when he smiled at me, a warm light seemed to suffuse the room”
97-98 blessed scene- did the Skull first and the three (good, bad and indifferent) at the same time
100 “don’t care wave”
104 attic and more books
106 I love this bit in the show with the gag of Lucy pushing the lid and revealing the insult (It would have been funnier if George called Lockwood out on the time change or cases messed up)
108 Joe and Esmeralda (their namesakes Marissa’s ghosts) we can have them in the show it would just be them getting repaired
110 Uncle Lockwood- Hey Kensal Green!
112 I love Lucy talking about Lockwood and complaining about George
115 “Walking into darkness with Lockwood at my side”
119 dismissing his grandchild Lockwood’s pointed questions (spiders attracted cats repelled)
124 Clever Lucy wish we could have seen this scene in the show
128 love Cameron delivering this line in the show “you’d think…” love the talk about George
Part three the Necklace
133 “like dragon scales”
135 I wish this scene was in the show. Lockwood talking to Lucy and telling her they're going to the hospital. Alas we might have got it if Netlflix wasn't allergic to anything more than eight episodes (or the episodes were longer)
138 “adrenalin in the ambulance and stopped the rot”
140 Lucy don’t be dense hate this scene
143 how big a reward? Is it still applicable?
146 I am so glad this storm cleared
20th October 2024
153 “Barnes liked the rules more than most”… “inexpressibly old”
156 four weeks to two in the show and Barnes dissmissal of other cultures (so really upping the stakes in the show)
158 “it’s easily started by grotesque shapes” George!
160 now people cancelled the cases… did she?
165 “I messed up and disaster followed”
168 ghost-fog is so cool and Annie is so creepy here
172 “the smiley giraffe” 173 George is so funny
180 "maybe I just wanted to save something of her, so she wouldn't be completely lost..."
183 "this necklace is more significant to Annabel Ward than her own bodily remains..."
185 wanting to save Annie... how hot was the Sheen Road fire?
191 Lockwood requests and asks her to connect with Annie's memory
195 "marks of their profession and status"
200 here here George "I say it's a crime to refuse free food"
201 Gibbet hill?
203 Lockwood's wolf like smile
205 the moment that sparked a number of questions all boiled down to did Kipps know Jessica and like her? (personally I think they were friends)
207 Love this bit "almost got it Kipps" wish we got to Jack Bandeira jump around a bit in the show
209 a note of when this begins again Hugo Blake is 100% guilty
216 I want a mint
218 "doesn't really add anything" LOCKWOOD WHAT
219 Lockwood's aesthetically long coat hindering him again
21st October
222 casually threatening children
225 "she was so radiant it was like the other-light was already on her"
232 potential murderer
237 "this was our house, our home"
240 I like the change in the show "can I offer you some tea" intruder using the ghosts as distractions and weapons
255 Compliments on ghost-wards
258 ingratiation with the trio
265 missing boy of the Fittes team :(
271 George and Lucy team up
273 Lucy's scary eyes
278 "obviously guilty" HOW? (I really want to know Lockwood's thought process as it so obvious that he was suspecting Fairfax quite early on)
282 the Skull? "talking quietly in the next room" (when Lucy is showing Annabel the group* picture) I wonder how this story would have changed if the Skull was heard by Lucy earlier on? how many more insults would we get?... as I was typing this up I came to ask myself am I the Skull? when reading this book? and the answer might very well be yes
*good idea she should have got a copy and cut it up and just showed the other people one by one see what happens
284 worried Lockwood is my favourite
287 *sarcasm* I wonder who else is in the picture
22nd October 2024
289 Lmao Lucy
291 dear Cousin Throckmorton (i had the exact same reaction the first time I read the book)
292 ululation is a word I forgot the meaning of (and all I could think looking at it is Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds)... I love a map... blackface of course the crimes Fairfax has commited is varied for sure
294 "not really relevant" but isn't it though? not a thought in this girls head honestly
302 "Lucy's terribly jaded"
309 "the house was just the gate"
313 Lockwood's customer service voice must be great. It has to be.
315 another puzzle piece
320 "we worked together" a well you say? well, well, well
324 Lockwood talking about what type of man Fairfax is "a dreadful one isn't it obvious?" to me? Yes both times I've read the book and even without watching the show first. George and Lucy however? not so sure it is
23rd October 2024
328 disconcertingly bright death-glows
332 "I didn't like it's face"
334 clever George
337 Lockwood not believing in the Screaming Staircase
345 hello smell of blood
347 more bright death-glows
348 "It looks like blood, it smells like it. it'll do as blood for me" (I like the show altering this line a little bit to make it run better)
353 lmao Lockwood "You're a girl aren't you meant to be more sensitive"
362 those poor cats- hey Lucy does have a brain it just took a minute to catch up
365 poor little boy "his other-light lit nothing but himself"
368 I love this converstation and Lucy being pleasant about it
372 "Lockwood was too good a leader to ignore so strong a warning"
377 "it had come from the locket... A burst of energy" Aw Annie is trying to help
378 Lockwood "No Lucy, that's not the way it's going to be"
385 funny George... don't worry Lucy will slap Lockwood you just have to wait a bit
386 Castle Sherbourne? 388 Lockwood noticing the smoke
389 Fairfax a self made man my aunt fanny
393 "Don't give me that. You had no idea" George might have actually and just didn't share it like Lockwood did
394 "she was an actor too... she'd had a promising acting career, but had given it up because of... something or other"
400 Lockwood is cool, calm and collected
402 "feel free to shoot the girl' Lockwood said something, but I didn't hear what" okay what did Lockwood say?
406 "pretentious, self-regarding sort of fellow"
407 "Will Fairfax" the acting name but Will Fairfax ever grow up?
409 "passion between them" concealment and performance of secret relationships...
412 Forgot? Good for Annie though
413 Clever Lockwood sending a message to Barnes (also why did DEPRAC show up in the show?)
415 Grebe seeing and recognising the silver glass and going "uh oh"
421 Starkins being spooked by DEPRAC is so funny
424 Barnes is so great "in keeping with tradition, Inspector Barnes managed to remain deeply annoyed with us while grudgingly congratulating us on a job well done."
425 Lockwood defending his choices and the "fullest most radiant smile" is so great
427 prep school nice (have fun kids)
428 Sad "His name was Sam McCarthy. For the record, he'd been twelve years old." (I do love the show for having Penelope approached and thanked the trio personally and having them attend the funeral as well)
431 party time hello "harp"
433 "we met each others eyes, smiled, and looked away"
435 I LOVE Lucy telling Lockwood about the Mill Incident
437 I giggle quite a bit at Lucy going "I don't need lights" and immediatly trips over a box
439 Lucy has no time for your nonsense
440 Lockwoods laugh and how well Lucy knows him "He'd thrown his head back, I could tell"

Mike McCarron, owner of Image Works Landscape Management in Fairfax Station, Va., remembers falling in love with the landscaping industry. McCarron started his lawn care business while working at UPS and attending school, pursuing his second degree. After graduating, he had a choice: continue his career with UPS or fully immerse himself in his lawn care business. “My business had been doing good at that point and it was a pretty good size,” he says. “So, I decided to go at it full-time and not turn back from that moment forward.” Making the Summit Since beginning in 2011, the LM Growth Summit has served as a hub for lawn care operators to connect with each other and industry vendors. McCarron attended his first LM Growth Summit in 2022, which he says allowed him to learn about new equipment and products with hands-on demos and one-on-one meetings. Those relationships made during the event were the ultimate highlight for McCarron. “I think the Summit is an excellent opportunity,” he says. “You get to talk to some of these high-end people within these organizations, such as vendors, distributors and suppliers. They say, ‘If you have a technical question, give us a call.’ It was fantastic to have that ability to communicate with someone and have a direct connection with someone on the inside.” McCarron adds that spending the week with a small group of lawn care operators, talking about their experiences with equipment, products and more was a highlight. “Your group becomes in sync during the two days, going around and speaking to everyone. I’ve since seen the people in my group at the Snow and Ice Management event in Chicago and I got to see them again at the Equip Expo,” he says. Seeing what’s new Alongside these relationships came the ability to test the latest products and learn how to incorporate them into the daily practices of McCarron’s business. He points to a pair of LM partners — Albaugh Specialty Products and FMC — as relationships he built at the event that have become valuable partners for his business. McCarron says that Albaugh’s Quintessential herbicide was what drew him to the company. Quintessential targets crabgrass — a problem weed for McCarron —with an altered formulation of quinclorac which affects all growth stages. FMC’s Scion insecticide, which provides control of mosquitos, ants, cockroaches, spiders, scorpions and ticks, was another product of interest for McCarron. “With the previous product that we were using, we only got around 28 to 45 days (of control),” he says. “With Scion, we doubled our longevity with a single application. It makes a huge difference when you’re trying to do more properties. If you can hit that property once over the course of 90 days, that is a much better way to go.” Learn more about McCarron and his business here. Good fucking riddance, 2018
The Good:
Dad survived his bone marrow transplant
I went back to school and got ‘A’s in all of my classes
Spider-Verse
lilbit is still out there being wonderful
I finally got my ADHD confirmed, even if I had to pay ridiculous amounts of money to do so
????
That’s it.
The Bad:
- Literally Everything Else, but especially the following:
My grandma, the person I love most in the world, died
Everything leading up to her death, because it could have been prevented if our healthcare system was designed to actually, you know, heal people, instead of maximizing profit and minimizing liability.
Everything regarding my extended family during all of this. I get too angry to even talk about it coherently.
My dad’s dog died
My dog died, a month later.
Specifically I had to leave my dog in my baby brother’s care for a few weeks while I helped with my grandma after she first got sick & also helped a friend move. While I was gone my dog started going into heart failure, and I had to euthanize her the day after I got home, from, you know, trying to nurse my grandma back to health.
My boss announced he was retiring in April, and I spent about a month not knowing if the shop would be bought or just shut down. So, that’s why I decided to go back to school. Because I was terrified of becoming destitute, and also sick of the way my family just expected me to get another job to support them while they did nothing.
I’ve been too wrapped up in my own shit to be a decent friend to anyone.
My godfather is slowly dying of cancer, and it’s awful.
My older brother had a mental break down. The tentative diagnosis has him on the schizophrenia spectrum. He refused treatment.
I noticed something wasn’t right in early October, but shit really hit the fan later that month. The first time things got bad I went with my dad to see him, and my dad refused to call 911, and wouldn’t let me call either & ignored the advice & help of my friend who is a practicing psychiatrist. Dad proceeded to put my life in danger multiple times, including inviting big bro to come back to his place, which involved me driving the 5-6 hours home from DC with big bro in the back seat wondering if he was gonna snap and try to interfere with me driving and get us all killed. Btw, dad’s house is filled with guns.
Brilliant fucking idea, dad. Don’t bring the mentally unstable person screaming at you that you’re a part of the illuminati sent to control him to a hospital, with trained medical professionals. No, bring the person whom you repeatedly acknowledged was a threat to the safety of yourself and your daughter to the house filled with guns.
The second time big bro freaked out was right before Thanksgiving, and his roommates called us in to help. I put my foot down with my parents, and baby bro went up with me and had one of my friends meet us in DC and we dragged big bro’s ass to the hospital. Can I say, sitting for several hours in the little room in the emergency department alone with my big brother as he rambled constantly making menacing comments, was one of the more harrowing experiences of my life?
Oh, hey, this second time? It happened about a week after my grandma died. I had driven my mom down so that she could see the body before it was cremated. And had to pick out Nina’s urn, and write her obituary, and pay for it myself, because someone had to keep their shit together, and it wasn’t gonna be my mom. And the great thing is that during the first incident, my dad called my mom and guilted her into leaving grandma’s side, where she was nursing her and making sure she ate, saying that Nina wouldn’t die if mom left and that my big bro was more important at that time. Well guess what fucking happened. Mom left, Nina got pneumonia, and she died.
The bureaucrats in Fairfax county, Virginia, did not believe that big brother fit the requirements for involuntary commitment, so he was free to go after two days in the hospital.
Fast forward to December 23, after I made it through my final exams and earned my perfect fucking GPA even though I was a wreck, after Nina’s funeral in Florida (which was it’s own special shit show that I don’t have the energy to break down atm, but big bro's presence was just the tip of the iceberg), after I fled up to my best friend’s house in PA, I learn that big brother had flipped out again. He was traveling somewhere in NC, threatening to murder my dad, my siblings, and me, among other things. His friends, whom I had previously warned when shit first started going down, called 911 and got him involuntarily committed.
This morning they had a hearing where the state determined that big bro has to stay in the state run long-term mental health facility because the judge was concerned about the “multiple death threats, actions towards staff, and history of med noncompliance”, according to my dad, who was present at the hearing.
So, at least I’m ending 2018 with the knowledge that big brother should be in the hospital for a while, and I can probably safely return to North Carolina at some point and try to resume finishing my degree.

Can’t Have it All: The Strange Request From a Disgruntled Man in Loudoun County
By: Lisa Timmerman, Executive Director
Small historic societies and local libraries often have hard to find books and booklets that feature local and regional history, and The Lee Lansing Research Library is no exception. Sharing the stories of the people from our region is just one of the ways we preserve our local history and make it accessible to the community. Local newspapers often contain gems as people freely express their love or hate for certain developments in society. They can also provide a touch of levity as we peer into the concerns and woes of those living in Loudoun County in the 1970s.
(Photograph by Donald G. Rypka, Jr. Enjoy these happy Loudoun geese in lieu of outhouses!)
The Metro Virginia News commenced in November 1972 and eventually condensed many heart-warming and charming stories in compilated volumes. Robin R. Lind, Karen T. Richardson, and Donald G. Rypka, Jr. identified the importance of these delves into the lives of Loudoun County residents in their eloquent introduction to the book Loudoun Harvest – faces and places, past and present, in Loudon County, Virginia. “The beauty of the landscape and the wealth of historical places is not what impressed us most. Rather, it was the warm-hearted and generous people who so proudly call Loudoun their home. These stories represent, not the history recorded by monuments and deed books, but the history of a place as perceived by the people who made, and are in the process of making, that history.”
Meet “Disgusted” aka Fred Crum, an 80-year-old man at the time of book’s publication. In an interview with Don Follmer, he elaborated on his letter to the editor, “The paper’s main topic for months has been SEWAGE, Sewage here, Sewage there, Sewage everywhere…Intellectual, new ideas? Anything interesting? Or cultural? NO WAY. -- Disgusted”
“Listen, Crum said, letting to with a stream of well-chewed Beech Nut over his porch railing, “this sewer stuff is a bunch of bull. Aside from the fact that I’m sick and tired of hearing about it, all the fuss isn’t even necessary.
“What we ought to do is get rid of all these sewer plants, underground lines that crack open, stop having these confusing meetings that no one understands…
“And pass a law that everyone has to build at least a two-holer in his yard. ‘Course we would have to pass some laws about size, depth and width of the seats…that sort of thing. But, hell, after the complicated mess we are into now, it should be pretty simple.
“You know,” Crum mused, looking at the Blue Ridge Mountains rising in his backyard, “there was something nice about the old outhouse. Kind of homey. I mean everybody knew what it was there for.
“You could catch up on the latest products that Sears and Monkey Wards were selling and the kids had a lot of harmless fun turning them over on Halloween.
“I mean it was nice back then. None of this Water Control Board and Regional Planning things and Sanitation Authorities. I know those guys are doing a job and all that, but with all the screwed-up laws, regulations, and stuff, they don’t hardly know what to do. And if they don’t know, who else knows?
“No fuss and muss with hookups and politics, no digging up the streets.
“All you need is some lumber, a deep hole in the ground, a bag of lime, a nail on the door for the latest catalogue and a path from the back door.
“Man,” he said, adjusting his used striped coveralls, “that was real livin’. People don’t now what they gave up when they started with this indoor plumbing.
“Every now and then you’d hear about somebody bein’ bit by a spider or seein’ a snake, but compared to goin’ in one a them sewer meetings or reading about it all the time. I’d almost druther be but bit a spider.
“Snakes? I never bothered about snakes anyway.”
Colonel John S. Mosby might have agreed with Mr. Crum. According to local folklore, Colonel Mosby hid from Union soldiers in an outhouse. His memories note: “A ludicrous incident occurred when we were leaving Fairfax. A window was raised, and a voice inquired, in an authoritative tone, what that cavalry was doing in the street. He was answered by a loud laugh from my men, which was notice to him that we were not his friends. I ordered several men to dismount and capture him. They burst through the front door, but the man's wife met them in the hall and held her ground like a lioness to give her husband time to escape. He was Colonel Johnstone, who was in command of the cavalry brigade during Wyndham's absence. He got out through the back door in his night clothes and barefooted, and hid in the garden. He spent some time there, as he did not know when we left, and his wife could not find him.” Here, “hid in the garden” could be a nice way of stating that he hid underneath the bench of the outhouse.
We know Dumfries residents, such as the Merchant family, used outhouses and the push for sanitation did not go through flawlessly as sewer rates and fees were an issue and concern to the local population. Besides for snarky chamber pots in The Weems-Botts Museum we have no lore to share regarding our past facilities. However, I feel confident stating that Colonel Mosby was probably not the only person to find it a convenient if not hideous hiding spot.
Note: Have you heard of The Weems-Botts Bibliophiles? This charming virtual monthly program features links to short stories, tea from Leaf & Petal, and a presentation/discussion on the selected theme!
