The Poetry of Decay
Mark Minkjan
Urban and architectural decay appeals to the imagination. While some consider the unfinished or collapsing parts of the city as ugly or disturbing, others feel they make an area more interesting than the picture perfect urban fabric. The city’s scars are stimuli for the mind. They raise questions, about memories and imaginations of a foregone past, and of potential futures. They visualise the passage of time and the inevitability of collapse, reminding us of our own transience. On a smaller level, dilapidation shows traces of faded lives, moved communities and shrunken economies. The voids provide space for the observer to interpret them as she or he likes, to fill them with imaginations and meanings.
Decay is a process rather than a fixed image and provokes thoughts and actions. It is not in sync with progress, modernisation and determined narratives, which are characteristics of modern Western society. Not surprisingly, decay is a main creative inspiration for artists and writers.

"FUNCTION FOLLOWS FORM: HOW BERLIN TURNS HORROR INTO BEAUTY
Fetish, Techno and Darkrooms
With the wall falling, squatters, intellectuals and artists from the West take over the abundance of warehouses in East Berlin. The bunker is used for techno parties and gains a reputation for being the ‘hardest club in the world’. At the ground floor, techno music was played, while on the first floor the walls where painted black, serving as darkrooms for SM activities.
Rumours has it that during extravagant parties such as “Sexperimenta” or “Overture of Lust”, candles where put in each room of the bunker: when they stopped burning, it was a sign to leave immediately: the oxygen had run out. After some raids, Berlin authorities placed severe building restrictions for the use on the bunker and the tenets where forced the bunkers closure.
The scene erected around the congregations in the bunker produced a group of party organisers and DJ’s that moved into an abandoned warehouse close to the Ostbahnhof and the former Stalinallee: Ostgut. It became known for Snaxx-Parties, gay-fetish parties under heavy techno, played by DJ’s from the club’s related Ostgut Tontrager label. After years of war, separation and oppression, Berlin had become a post-apocalyptic landscape, with hedonistic inhabitants that created spaces of freedom, expression and a (gay) sexual revolution."

Failed Architecture in Budapest: A Case Study
Throughout the world sit buildings that are crumbling and disused. What governments, architects and urban planners choose to do with them can promote and revitalise a city.

Recently a workshop was held in Budapest paying particular attention to the once glorious Communist jewel, the Skála Metró shopping centre. The workshop was the first part of the 'Adaptive city' series of the 'Uninhabited Budapest' campaign, an initiative by the Hungarian Contemporary Architecture Centre (KÉK). The event was led in collaboration with Failed Architecture (FA).
Failed Architecture is a Dutch research project, devoted to investigating urban failure. Their FA Mobile series takes to the road hosting workshops and events in cities around Europe. We were able to join an open debate about the Skála Metró in Budapest.

Together with a group of 20 to 30 participants, Failed Architecture performed a complex research workshop that broke down the history of the Skála Metró by analysing different layers of influences to it – the built environment, social context, economics, reputation and politics. The timeline which they created shows the history of the case from various, interconnected angles.

The investigation of the building from a social point of view showed that its floors are actually in accordance with the social stratification of Budapest. In the subway level one finds the lowest strata of the society, the next floor is occupied by cheap clothing shops and towards the top there are offices and services for the upper middle class.
The recovery from crisis to the reconstruction of Nyugati square which is taking place in 2014, can give possibilities to rethink the case of Skála Metró. According to the reconstruction plans the direct connection between the subway and the building will be cut off to avoid negative effects of the underpass.
Nowdays the owners have to accept a lot of compromise in order to keep the building alive, but the long-term plan is to convert the building to a multi-functional lifestyle centre which may host sport facilities and cultural venues alongside traditional shopping stores.

Levente Polyák, project leader of the workshop, thinks it is very interesting how the owners handled the crisis of the building. Polyák is convinced that the building's rebirth is closely related to the flexibility of the complex. With only small changes the spaces of the building can easily adapt to new functions. In conclusion he said that there is a lot of potential in the building as its core architecture is still in a great condition.

Concrete recycled from air shelters was used to built Woodbery Down estate in the 50s. At the time, people called it 'Estate of the future' for it's innovative planning and construction. In recent years it went through a massive redevelopment, with a luxury apartments springing up and replacing many of the original buildings. I guess you can call it 'Estate of the future' again, although not in exactly positive way. #london #WoodberyDown #sevensisters #northlondon #housingcrisis #photoftheday #igres #londononly #londonlife #postwararchitecture #architecture #berkeleyhomes #gentrification #londonestates #architectureporn #architecturelovers #modernarchitecture #londonarchitecture #londonbuildings #lookingup_architecture #exploreeverything #architektura #brutal_architecture #skyscrapers #brutalism #brutalarchitecture #igresdaily #failedarchitecture #councilestate #c20society (at London, United Kingdom)
