overall i like tokyo ghoul re a lot more than i expected given its reputation. it takes a while to get there but once the pieces finally line up the last few volumes are a really cathartic and theres so many 10/10 moments when those dominoes finally start falling. i think the switch in focus to the ccg was vital to the overall themes of the story, it really wouldnt hit as good if you werent rooting for both sides obviously, but the ccg has too many like. nobody jobbers so it needed to cut some of the fat and focus harder on a few key characters. but despite that i think i really like tokyo ghoul as a whole. its very impactful, has some gorgeous art and paneling and i think ishida sui really put his everything into it. more than worth a read, its easy to see why it exploded the way it did and also why studio pierrot should be jailed for their crimes.

furuta is a bit of a mixed bag bc at his worst he feels kind of annoying and hes like TOO zany but post dragon activation we see him act a lot more lucid and sincere which rounds him out a lot, and i think some of his Silly stuff is good there just needed to be a better balance between his large ham and his true core.

tooru is obviously the most mixed bag. some shit hits so good like when he has to present as a woman and we get the very obvious gender dyphoria as horror allegory during the auction which is done really well and makes your stomach turn but then the torso stuff makes your stomach turn in a bad way. his backstory also feels really gender and sexuality specific in a way no one else's tragedies really do? like rize has her baby facotry stuff and that feels like its handled with a lot more tact overall. i dont think ishida sui had bad intentions but he ultimately stumbled BUT i did really like the final quinx confrontation and i think they were the glue holding part 2 together.
