Fables #122 page 18: The Lady In The Lake sells a greater destiny to a mighty wizard: he will marry Snow White and father gods and goddesses. A #fables fan wrote asking about my pages from the #vertigo series by #billwillingham and @buckycomics aka Mark Buckingham. I’m not trying to sell originals now, but she’s one of those beloved fans whom I met in person at #FablesCon Minnesota, so… She bought 4 pages and threw in a nice portrait of her favorite character #cinderella! #bigby #comics Much love to FAbles editor supreme Shelly Bond, not creating more epic tales at @blackcrownhq. More on Fabletown...and Asbury, Too
[from Andrew Carl at the ONCE UPON A TIME MACHINE blog]
FABLETOWN AND BEYOND
Over on the Locust Moon blog, Chris Stevens provided a wonderful reaction piece to our unforgettable time in Fabletown (née Rochester), Minnesota. You really ought to read it.
The journey truly started on Tuesday night, three days before Fabletown and Beyond would be underway. Josh O'Neill in Philly and I in New York, we talked on the phone like protective parents of our partner Chris. "Make sure he has all his chargers. See if Rob can tie up that banner stand so it won't give him too much trouble." "I feel like I should pack him a lunch in the morning." "Fill a bag with food that'll stay good for a few days, in case he gets hungry on the last leg." And so on. If you haven't read his recap yet, you might not realize that the next morning, Chris would be boarding a train from Philadelphia to Winona, Minnesota. That spelled a 30+ hour trip each way. Josh and I had it easy. We got to fly.
Two things struck me within hours (really, the first hour) of my arrival in Fabletown, MN: how fascinating the indoor (post-apocalypse-ready) mini-metropolis of Rochester was, and how aggressively nice all of the people there were. But it wasn't just the locals who treated us well. Something about Fabletown seemed to bring out the best in folks, and the good vibes permeated every nook and cranny of those subways and skyways and buildings that bled and fed into each other from block to block. Every last person we dealt with was kind and helpful - especially our international team of convention organizers, including Bill Willingham, Stacy Sinner, Mike Sinner, Stephanie Cooke, Brad Thomte, and all of those awesome volunteers.
Chris covered the key events and joys of the weekend pretty wonderfully, but I thought I should share some of personal favorite photos from the weekend here, as well.
ASBURY PARK COMIC CON
The Saturday after Fabletown, Chris, Dave Tanh, Jimmy Comey, Dave Proch and I headed to Asbury Park, NJ for a slightly more traditional comic convention.
We dug the unique setup of the room - most of us were down on the floor of this arena (you might be able to spot the Once Upon a Time Machine banner near the upper right corner). The only issue was the apparent need for frequent, high-volume declarations over the hall's loudspeakers that a second floor existed. Here's Chris, Dave Tanh, and I ready for business......and our neighbor, lovely fellow OUaTM creator, Rafer Roberts. At one point the awesome John Workman (who we were proud to have letter a story in OUaTM) stopped by for a great chat. We only got one awkward photo with him. Still worth sharing. Captain Ameridog also swung by our table for a minute.More artists and exhibitors were stationed at the top of the bleachers, around the edge of the building, with tons of natural light and views of the beach. We were jealous of our buddies like Ulises Farinas......and Mark Robinson.See the view Mark got to enjoy all day?We finished off the day with a jaunt around town to find the perfect spot to eat, drink, and unwind. The gang ended up at Moonstruck, a beautiful restaurant with great food and even better service. We raucous comic-folk probably stood out like a sore thumb in that fine establishment, but they treated us like kings & queens. And we went home happy.
NEXT UP!
This coming Saturday, April 6, I'll be sharing a table with Charles Fetherolf at MoCCA Arts Fest, at the 69th Regiment Armory in Manhattan, NY, 11am-6pm. Hope I see you there!

Fabletown and Beyond 2013 Photos
First year shows can be hit or miss, especially when one as specialized as mythic fiction. However, FablesCon was easily one of the best conventions I've ever attended. With amazing talent found in larger conventions with a relaxed and more intimate feel of small conventions - it was a blast.

Fabletown and Beyond (1): Here's why making Fabletown & Beyond my first ever con was a terrible idea
Because it's awesome and it's going to spoil me rotten.
I'm new to comics. I stumbled into a few titles late in my undergrad and into my master's programs, but I didn't dive in headfirst until DC launched the New 52 in 2011. I'd only ever been to two conventions before--academic conventions about writing and literacy. Those're kind of a whole different bag of beans.
So I'd never been to a comics convention. Until yesterday. When my pal Josh and I ran into the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester, MN, grabbed our badges, and stumbled into a proscenium stage just in time to see Bill Willingham and co. struggle a bit with their tech setup. "Is there a computer geek in the house?" The audience laughs.
Tumblr media
Bill stalls during technology issues by telling really goofy jokes. My kinda place!
They get things settled, and Bill introduces Mark Buckingham, who proceeds to--wait, wait, wait. It's not going to make any sense unless you know who these guys are. And since I'm pretty sure most of my readers are my Mom, I'll at least mention that these are two of the main dudes behind the Eisner-award-winning series Fables--you've read some Fables, Mom! Those guys! Up on stage! Singing a duet!
Singing a duet? Wait, aren't they writers and artists? Yes. Yes, they are. And also, apparently, entertainers who know how to put on a good show and are going to spoil me rotten for any other convention I ever go to. Because Mark's Guest of Honor speech was absolutely delightful and full of nonsense (one of my absolute favorite things). It included a bit of candid story-telling and question-answering, the aforementioned duet with Bill, and leading the audience in some Carpenters. WITH  A LIVE PIANO ACCOMPANIST. Some really silly technology jokes. Free stuff! And a general feeling that I'd made the wrong decision by beginning what I hope is a long career of attending cons with this absolutely delightful conference in li'l ol' Rochester, Minnesota.
Tumblr media
Mark Buckingham thanks his accompanist for the night, composer Chris Opperman
And it only gets worse. There's a bar, y'all. With convention-themed drinks. For conventioners only. Last night, as Josh was sipping on his "Poisoned Appletini" and I was trying not to gulp my absolutely delicious "Vodka Grimmlet," a woman I'd met named Lisa came up to chat with us. She confirmed my sneaking suspicions: "This is not your everyday convention."
I'm sunk. It's a hopeless case. Other cons, you're going to have to work REALLY HARD to match this experience, and it's only just gotten started. Because Fabletown and Beyond is absolutely ruining me for other conventions.
And I'm going to enjoy every minute of it.

To Fabletown...and Beyond!
This Friday through Sunday (March 22-24), you'll find Once Upon a Time Machine's Andrew Carl (Editor; Writer, "John Henry"), Chris Stevens (Producer; Writer, "The Boy Who Drew Cats"), and Josh O'Neill (Creative Advisor; Writer, "Bombus and Vespula") in Rochester, Minnesota at Bill Willingham's Fabletown and Beyond convention!
What is Fabletown and Beyond?
Fabletown and Beyond will be a convention entirely designed to discuss, promote and celebrate comic books that fall within the Mythic Fiction realm.
And what's this Mythic Fiction?
Mythic Fiction comics are Fables and Sandman, The Unwritten, Bone, Kill Shakespeare, Mice Templar, Stuff of Legend, Memorial, Fairest, The Abominable Charles Christopher, Mouse Guard, Hellboy, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Arrowsmith, House of Mystery, Castle Waiting, and dozens more truly wonderful books.
Mythic Fiction is that magic-bound alliance of fairytales, folklore, myth, legend, talking animals and characters from literature, given new life, new challenges to face and new adventures to chronicle.
So who else will be there?
To name a few of the comics heavyweights in attendance: Bill Willingham (naturally), Mark Buckingham, Shelly Bond, Kurt Busiek, Mike Carey, Bryan J. L. Glass, Gene Ha, Adam Hughes, Steve Leialoha, Mike Oeming, David Petersen, Chris Roberson, Matt Sturges, Chrissie Zullo...and a whole bunch more. See a more complete guest list at the convention's website.
You'll find us, the Locust Moon Comics crew, in Fabletown's intimate Artists' Alley. We'll be there with books, prints, and stories in tow.
And on Sunday @ 11:00 am, Chris Stevens will be speaking on the Artist Alley panel in the so-called "Boring Panel Room"!
You can also check out Fabletown and Beyond on Facebook.
Hope we see you there!
