On Moving
By Jane Huffman
Like butter, gone. I’m moving on, because it would be ludicrous to stay. It feels like a return (to sanity), although I’ve never been. (I’ve never lived a mile west of Illinois.) “I come home from the soaring,” Rilke wrote in The Inner Sky, which I take as imperative (omit the “I”): to ground, return to Earth, to grind the fable of my life down like orpiment into a yellow ash and tie my body to the floor. Rilke writes of God (“still roaring in my ears”) but God, for me (today) is fear. Goodbye to my deteriorating house. Delirium. I’m out the door. Stasis is a sieve through which I drag myself.
Literature feels / far away. Black bulls grazing / beyond a pale hill.

Dear Audubon
"MR. ADKINSSSS!!"
"Yes Simpy?"
"Can you write this week's story?"
"Welllll ... I guess so."
"THANK YOU!!!!"
Simpy fans - More case stories return Wednesday, July 27! Grand R's Basepath Bonds begin Friday, July 22.
(A letter to my youth and a southwest Iowa town which will always have a little bit of home to it...)
T-Bone Days parades ... Summer mornings in Mr. Schuldt's typing class and Mr. Nemitz' driver's ed classes ... A full gym for Midwest Conference basketball ... The best pizza at Pizza Hut and ice cream when I met the Buster Bar at Dairy Queen ... Work-up games in the front yard at 109 North Division Street.
Where did it all go?
I recently drove through your once large streets and bustling downtown and neighborhoods of years gone by. I'll admit I went right past my childhood home, wondered aloud what happened to the Pizza Hut, A&W, Holiday Inn restaurant, the Hamburger Shop, the former home of the Nishnabotna Valley Tribune and Audubon Advocate and other sights from my youth.
As I entered the Bakery on Broadway, a tinge of sadness overcame me. What had happened? Why didn't I feel the euphoria of those past days?
And then Doug and Gary Olsen made the time that I was battling against - 38 years - melt away. Stories of the past fun times for both of our families spent together. I left a visit much too short and parked my car on the town square.
As I walked through those streets, that feeling of knowing the exact location of memorable times of the 1970s and early 1980s came back. A Legion Park where we had the biggest class picnics ever for Audubon Elementary; Mr. Albert the Bull, always standing as a silent guardian; a baseball field that brought back Little League wins and losses of years gone by - men's fastpitch softball excitement - and big Wheeler wins; the fabled 100 yards of AHS gridiron success including the memorable 1977 season when the Trojan horse rolled down the hill to the surprise of Atlantic, Greg Mountain, Joel Huffman, Dirk Christensen and that intrepid bunch of farm boys knocking off Urbandale and Fairfield on the way to the Dome; the softball field that my dad had a hand in creating - the old wooden scoreboard was gone but I could see my brother and I ducking foul balls to keep score; the high school where so many wonderful girls and boys basketball wins and wrestling victories were witnessed; a once vacant lot just up the street from the high school where my father watched in astonishment as his oldest son fired a toy dart gun at a rabbit and nearly hit it during a winter hunt; the former Aldrich home which was Scott and I's home away from home for so much fun; and as I made my way back to my car, the Presbyterian Church where my mom and dad and other leaders taught both of us the love of our Lord through Sunday School, youth groups and more.
The drive back up 71 north out of town was a little slower - envisioning a Papa Burger or two and the best ice cold root beer ever from Kim Brink's mom and dad at A&W; Mr. Rustvold's Super Valu store which has a new name and ownership; the spot where Skip's Cafe once stood; Delbert Christensen's Pizza Hut which was the pride of the county and farther at one time; Mr. Kneeskern's Holiday restaurant which had the best Sunday buffet in the world..
A smile and a laugh ... Thank you Audubon - those memories are still and will always be there.

  Title: CHEESEMAKER DURDSDEN
Author: Mark Huffman, Dawn Davidson (Illustrator)

Publisher:  Brown Books Pub Group
Pages: 32
Formats: Hardcover, eBook
Find it: Goodreads, Amazon, B&N, TBD, Bookshop.org
Cheesemaker Durdsden could hardly be called a cheesemaker, with how bland, rubbery, and flavorless his cheese tasted. And so, in order to better his skills and silence the critics, he went in search of any and every cheesemaking technique he could learn. That way, he could make cheese to be envied by every cheesemaker, and savored by every cheese enthusiast. Now he's back with new skills, and some suspiciously delicious--deliciously suspicious--cheese to prove it. How could a man with such boring cheese before now make this tasty cheesy treat? You'll never guess what fabled creature holds the secret to Cheesemaker Durdsden's sudden success!

  About Mark:
Tumblr media
Mark Huffman writes about our shared human experiences, which is a pretentious way to say that he writes about toots and bottoms and food. He prepared for writing children's books by spending much of his early life as an actual child. Unlike other children's authors he might name who have spuriously claimed the title, he is a real doctor. He lives with his family in Texas.
