Hazard Ailaht | Present Night | Beneath Selatak
Hazard hardly dared look around as the hyena bounded across the noisy streets, terrified theyâd crash, terrified it would throw him off as he clutched at its furry body with thick fingers. He shut his eyes to keep himself from panicking entirely.
Then - maybe a few minutes later, maybe several - the noise of the city cut off, the air got cooler, and he felt them goâŠdown. With a mechanical, clanking sound, he realized they were using what must be an old elevator.
But how would a hyena know to do that? Was a bronzeblood controlling it somehow? No - surely that was impossible from this distance, even if the troll was using mind honeyâŠ
He opened his eyes a crack, cautious but curious. They widened as he realized he and the beast carrying him were descending far, far beneath the ground, and Selatak was already barely above sea level, island city-state that it was.
It was dark, almost stiflingly black. The little he dared to move his head provided no change in visibility as they went deeper.
He tried not to panic.Â
âGods and spirits, if you can hear meâŠâ he murmured. âPlease help me with whateverâs coming. I may be ignorant, but I mean no harm. I never wanted those clowns to die.â
He had to take a deep breath. Calm. Try to be calm. Or at least not lose it entirely.
Finally, with a thud, they reached what he assumed was the bottom.
The hyena shook itself and growled, and strangely he thought he could feel its impatience. He had an idea that it wanted him to get off.
The blueblood did so, if somewhat clumsily, given the darkness and his stiff limbs.
Then there came a rushing, cracking, bizarre rush of noise and air -
- and the elevator doors opened, dim light pouring in as they slid away with a clatter. He couldnât quite identify what its source was, only that it was coming from several feet off in this cavern theyâd apparently descended to.Â
The hyena was gone.
Instead a tall man - tall as his ancestor and even more muscled, visible skin dotted with scars - now stood beside the librarian.
He blinked, mouth agape as the man began walking.
âShifter.â He murmured in wonder. His friends had told him, but heâd never imaginedâŠ
âYeah, thatâs right, kid.â Said the man - short-haired, dressed in camouflage gear - in a rough if not disdainful voice, now several paces away and more visible.Â
âNow follow me, you can go gaga about it later.â
Hazard followed, stumbling a little across the rocky floor as he got feeling back into his arms and legs. What else could he do? Fight? Interrogate him?
Neither were his way, and both seemed like a terrible idea given the circumstances.
âWhereâŠare we?â He managed to pluck up the courage to ask, though he wasnât sure if heâd get an answer. âWhy did you take me down here?â
The werehyena snorted.
âWe all decided after what Roscurâs stupid ass pulled that we had to intervene before the clowns could cull you. Not fucking fair, is it? You never asked for this.â
Hazard, stunned, mulled this over for a few seconds.
âIâŠthanks, but Lizzie was going to defend me. She wouldâve gotten me off, Iâm sure of it.â
The taller man laughed unkindly.
âThey say youâre supposed to be smart. Use your fucking brain, kid. Even if youâd been pardoned, you think they wouldâve let you run around free for long? No. You know how clowns work. Unless thereâs blood, theyâre not satisfied. Not after that many losses.â
He gritted his teeth, letting out an animal-like huff in frustration.
âThatâs why we donât operate that way. Thatâs why Roscur is the biggest fucking idiot ever hatched and heâs going to drag us all down with him.â
He looked up at the distant rocky ceiling, then shook his head and laughed again, unpleasant and now hyena-like.
âDonât we seem down to you? Isnât this deep enough weâve been forced to hide? Fuck, maybe you canât get it, youâre a blueblood. Then againâŠâ
He looked at Hazard.
âYou know what itâs like. With that ancestor of yours.â
The scorpion-snake troll shuddered.
Yes. He knew.
The man nodded, and finally they made their way into a large room carved out from the rock.
Inside was the strangest assortment of trolls Hazard had ever seen. Some almost looked normal, but their eyes, ears, or horns gave them away. Others seemed like things out of story books; he wasnât even sure they were trolls.
He saw a couch and went for it, sitting down heavily.
The werehyena snorted softly, but Hazard was too tired and baffled to care. He looked away from everyoneâs gazes, a mixture of curious and wary eyes all pointed his direction.
Mutants. He was sure at least half of them were mutants. And the ones that looked more normalâŠheâd be willing to bet they were shifters, or something.
But the one that had brought him down hadnât hurt him.
So why was he here?
âUh, heeeeey, hi, Mr. Ailaht.â Said a maroon girl, one with a pointy nose and rather homely face. She had buck teeth and dirty nails, and she fidgeted as she talked.
âIâm Rattus, and this is the DicemakerâŠâ she gestured to a quiet older man sitting cross-legged on a cushion, his hair streaked with gray. His caste was impossible to tell, head tilted down.
Then she gestured to the werehyena.
âThatâs Kharak, youâve met himâŠuhâŠshoot. I forget what I was gonna say.â She said, biting her lip, then she grimaced.
âRight, uh, sorry for grabbing you. Kharak said why, right?â
âYou donât want the clowns to hurt me.â Hazard offered, but his expression was politely confused. âButâŠwho are all of you? Whatâs your connection to Roscur? WhyâŠwhy do you care so much what happens to me?â
He tried to sound politely curious instead of suspicious, but he couldnât help wondering. The whole situation was so odd.Â
Kharak and Rattus exchanged a look - hers worried, his a grimace - but it was the Dicemaker who spoke up.
The older man looked up at Hazard, and he finally realized his eyes were a faded green; it was impossible to tell if they were olive or jade. His expression was distant, as if his mind was elsewhere, but his words were clear enough.Â
âPanzen is one of ours.â He said quietly, and the room of strange people hushed as they hadnât for the maroon or the werehyena.
âWe are Selatakâs unwanted, its underculture of mutants, mages, and other such folk. Most of us live down here, but some such as Kharak and Panzen live on the surface. We do not like what he does with his gang, but he sends us money and goods we can hardly refuse. And it is our fault for failing to protect him when he was young.â He sighed wearily.Â
âWhat?â Hazard asked blankly. âIâm sorry, Iâm still pretty lost. I know magic exists - some of my friends are mages, though, uh, Kharakâs the first shifter Iâve ever met. But I still donât see what this has to do with why he apparently stole my venom and started using it to kill people? I think?â
He cringed at making such a direct accusation, but given everything that had been saidâŠ
The Dicemaker studied him, those faded eyes suddenly turning sharp as he sniffed the air for some odd reason, then nodded.
âYou truly donât remember.â He murmured. âYou must have suppressed it.â
âSuppressed what?â Hazard retorted too quickly. âIâm fine.â
âThe carnival. That night Goh Tat asked you to cull a mutant -â
Noise in his ears.
Laughter. Striped canvas.Â
âNo.â He mumbled. âI donât -â
A cluster of cages all gleaming, shining metal and soiled insides. The stench of troll misery, such a sharp contrast to the animal tent, its inhabitants well fed and well cared for.
Mutants were less valuable than beasts.
Goh Tatâs hand on his shoulder. Tight. Too tight. Making sure he wouldnât run away.
A girl with hair so dirty he couldnât tell what color it was. A tail of some kind. They said she was a cat and lizard mixed with a trollâŠ
So why were her eyes - a strange but lovely silver - full of fear just like his?
Just like Bohaaiâs?
âNo.â He moaned. âI donât - donât make me -â
Remember.
Hazard held his head in his hands.
Heâd spat venom at a clown to get the mutant free. In their face.Â
Then another.Â
Shouting. Cursing.Â
Then all was quiet.
âFor your donation, Goh Tat, we will forget this happened.â Came a pleasant voice as he heard the rustle of stacks of bills. âI will make them all forget. Voodoos are wonderful that way. But you owe us a new mutant.â
âYeah, yeah.â Said the cerulean dismissively, waving a hand. âYouâll get one. Iâll teach my stupid kid a lesson. Weâre square.â
After that, it had taken Hazard weeks to walk without pain.Â
In the present, he sobbed, now on his knees on the cold stone floor.
âWhyâŠ?â He whispered as he saw the greenbloodâs eyes crackle with magic. âWhy did youâŠ?â
âThat was Panzen.â Said the Dicemaker. âYou saved him. He never forgot.â
âNow he repays me with this?!â Hazard cried, blue tears running down his stubbled face. âMurder?!! I never asked for that! He made it look like it was my fault!! Why!!!â
âYeah, thatâs why I want to beat him over the head.â Kharak growled. âHeâs a little fucked. Anyone would be, running off and getting raised by Hakket fucking Ixodes, but heâs still a champion bulgewipe. Aside from screwing you, itâs just gonna make the clowns crack down harder. Heâs stupid. But no, money and murder were just too much of a temptation for his dumb ass.â
âMoney?â Hazard asked blankly, rummaging in his sylladex for tissues.Â
Kharak rolled his eyes. âYou think mamba and deathstalker venom come cheap? Especially mixed together? Heâs been selling the shit too, just pretending itâs some new poison.â
âGreat.â Said Hazard numbly, slowly wiping his face dry. He wasnât sure how much more of this he could take.
The Dicemakerâs expression softened.
âThatâs enough for now. We have food, if youâd like some.â
âYes.â Said Hazard instantly.
â
It was the strangest meal heâd ever eaten, only feet away from almost three dozen mutants and mages, but it wasnât bad.Â
He quickly ate up his first plate of chicken and rice with vegetables and was given a second, then a third, and after that one Kharak snorted and told him theyâd have to start charging him for more.
Hazard blushed blue and looked away.
They probably struggled to get fresh foodâŠ
âI know we have little right to ask, but we could use your help, Hazard.â Dicemaker said to him after he finished his meal.
âHuh?â He said, baffled, sitting on the couch again. âWhat can I do? And I canât stay down here forever.â
âWe know.â The greenblood assured him calmly. âWe will take you back no matter what, but we would like to rescue Panzen, if it is still possible.â
âRescue?â Hazard repeated, and then he felt dread well in his stomach.
âOh noâŠâ He whispered.
Dicemaker nodded grimly, and with one upturned palm he produced some silver dice that projected a hazy image of the mutant gangster.
He was, once again, held in a circus cage.Â
The Day Howler sat with a cool expression, arms crossed, but Hazard saw how his tail curled around his body, the way his ears pressed down as he struggled to swallow past his psi suppressing collar digging into his throat.
âWhat can I do?â He whispered - frustrated, helpless. âIâm not brave. You have magic. You donât need me.â
âYouâre a blueblood.â Kharak said roughly. âYou can get into his execution ceremony. All the sects he hit are in on it, making it into a real party tomorrow evening. You and I could save his sorry ass, see him get justice the right way. Not from clowns. Not like this.â
Hazard laughed softly. It was all so insane.Â
âYou said the clowns wonât rest until they have blood.â Hazard pointed out. âHow do we save him and still appease the sects?â
The olive wore a vicious grin.
âI didnât say we wonât hurt him.â
Then he tossed back his head and let out a mocking hyena cackle, the sound echoing through the caves below Selatak.

AO3 Fanfiction masterpost *updated*
Hey!
Iâm bringing back this masterpost with the newest works. Youâll find a few different fandoms, like Wayhaught, Trimberly, Sanvers..., even A couple of Faberry fics. I hope you enjoy them!
*Iâm currently writing a Deanoru oneshot*
And if you have a prompt for any of those fandoms, feel free to send them my way.
WayHaught (Waverly Earp / Nicole Haught - Wynonna Earp)
Stupid (great) decisions
Nicole gets drunk and starts playing with her phone when she shouldn't. But that might not be such a bad thing.Â
A Tumblr prompt: "Haught... did you just thirst follow my sister?" College AU maybe and wyhaught share a class? saw you receiving prompts :D
Itâs always her
With the demon's ring in her hand, Nicole remembers. Dozens of lives, dozens of faces, but always her.
Another Tumblr prompt: Wayhaught + "Its always gonna be you" (or/in somekind of soulmate AU or that thing were they are reincarnated and can sometimes get their memories from previous lives or not)
Time and Time again
They've had a lot of lifetimes together, and every single one of them counts.
This is a sequel/prequel to "It's always her", so I strongly recommend to read that one first. Â
Keep the tie on
Nicole has a new uniform.Â
Sanvers (Alex Danvers/Maggie Sawyer - Supergirl)
And then Iâll ruin it all by saying something stupid (like I love you)
Maggie gets to know the flirty side of Alex Danvers and realizes that, maybe, sheâs being an idiot.
Assumptions
Maggie really should stop making assumptions about Alex Danvers.
The hidden face of the moon (is a masterpiece)
Thereâs a lot of people that cares about Alex Danvers, even if sheâs a little oblivious about it. (Or the one where everybody is a little in love with Alex)
Codename: ARTEMIS (ongoing)
*Better if you previously read The hidden faceâŠ*
After Alex is badly wounded, scaring the hell out of all her family and friends, Winn decides that itâs time to do something about it.
Giggles
The DEO agents arenât used to a happy Alex Danvers.
Out of juice
When you run away from an alien planet without enough time to bring your new gunâs charger with you.
Inevitable
Alexâs thoughts have been piling up inside a box under her bed for a long time, hidden in the pages of her notebooks for only her eyes to see. Until the day she decides to share them with the world.
Waiting for you
*Read after Inevitable. Maggies point of view.*
Since her parents kicked her out of her home, Maggie has always felt alone. She only finds some comfort on the stars and the poems of someone she found by chance on Instagram. Until she moves to Midvale and meets Alex Danvers.
Of questions and bets
Thereâs a hidden board at the DEOâs break room full of dates and names.
I Donât Wanna See You With Her
Itâs been months and her words from that night still echo in her head, like a wound that never heals. I canât do this anymore.
You are my tree, my destiny.
Sometimes, Maggie needs to hug her soon-to-be-wife like her life depends on it. Some other times, she just likes to embarrass Alex in front of the others.
Beware of the Danvers sisters (and their lack of self-preservation)Â
Maggie is used to it. Lena just stepped into this mess without realizing.Â
Supercorp (Kara Danvers/Lena Luthor - Supergirl)
You make my heart feel like itâs summer (When the rain is pouring down)
Lena just sent her mother to jail and she feels alone in the world. But Kara wonât let her believe that. Post 2x08
Leo, the friendly dog. Leo loves to make friends at the park. Albert and him are a match made in heaven. Alex doesn't seem to think so.Â
Hollstein (Laura Hollis/Carmilla Karnstein - Carmilla)
Eternity is a lonely word
âAnd what about eternity? What if I find that someone and want to keep them forever?â
Based on that little moment in 3x17 when Lafontaine catches Carmilla stroking Lauraâs hair.
Trimberly (Trini/Kim - Sabanâs Power Rangers)
We are a thunderstorm (ready to strike)
After the battle, they are one, glued to each other, always together. They just need a little permanent reminder of that bond. (Or the one where they all get tattoos).
You make my whole world feel so right when itâs wrong (Thatâs why I know you are the one)
The first time it happens, Kimberly is a second away from doing something stupid (like erasing that fucking smirk from Amandaâs face with her fist), before Jason puts a hand on her shoulder to stop her. Or how Trini keeps having suspicious encounters with Amanda, and Kimberly feels like sheâs stepped into the Twilight Zone.
The enemy of my friend is my friend (or something like that)
Sometimes, Trini misses the days when she was still invisible at school, when she didnât have any friends and people simply ignored her. Itâs not like Trini doesnât love her little team of misfits, sheâs just not used to all the attention that being friends with the two biggest pariahs at school has brought to her life.
You've got a friend in me (as weird as that is)
There must be something in the water... Or the one where Amanda starts acknowledging Trini at school and Harper thinks she's going mad.
When the past comes knocking
There's a reason for Trini's policy against kissing cheerleaders.
Never you
Kimberly makes a decision that takes her to Trini's door on a rainy afternoon.
Tumblr prompt: Trimberly + "I regret many things but not you, never you" Â
In the middle of the night Â
In the middle of the night, in a dark, cold lake, Kim is not alone.
Okay, so @youcanbemysanity on Tumblr asked for someone to write a Trimberly fic based on the chorus of Taylor Swiftâs Ready for It, and suddenly I got this idea in my head and I couldnât not write it.
Iâm not even sure if it works well with the song, but at least I tried. Also, itâs slightly NSFW.
Friday Nights
Trini loves horror movies, but there's a line she won't cross.
Another prompt from Tumblr! you choose the ship, "im not watching IT" "is xxx scared of clowns?"
Unexpected Knights Â
They've had a really public coming out, basically in front of the whole school, but things seemed to be going well, until they return from Winter's break and there's a new guy who won't leave Kimberly alone. But Trini has made some unexpected friends that will jump to the rescue, even if is just to avoid having Trini throwing punches around.
Answering a prompt from Tumblr: I got a trimberly prompt, Kim and trini have their relationship exposed to the school, it's mostly positive and things go good. However as they are leaving school they start getting harassed by bullies, before either can do anything they get rescued (more like helped by) surprise heroes: Bulk and Skull.
Faberry (Rachel Berry/Quinn Fabray - Glee)
On songs and how she came to realize
After their argument at the auditorioum, once Rachel is gone and sheâs alone again, Quinn has a revelation. Set after the âpiano sceneâ on Original Song. Faberry one-shot.
Sharing
Tina and Mike are getting married and their house is full of people. There's one only bed to share, which forces Quinn to face something she regrets doing months ago.
Another Tumblr prompt: your feet are cold, keep them away + faberry maybe ?

Hello poetz, maybe you or your followers can help me? I have been trying to find this faberry story for ages: it is set in the past (Something like 1930s or something). Rachel is the new girl in town, finn and quinn are supposed to marry - at one point in the story kurt is beaten up for dancing with Kurt at a party - and in the end faberr, klaine and brittana leave lima to live in new york because its more open there and they all move next door. Does it sound familiar? Thanks for helping out!
I don't think I've ever read that one.
Posting in case anyone recognizes it.

Rule of Teeth
This drabble is preceded by Underculture.
Hazard Ailaht | Selatak | Present Night
Hazard stood in line, surrounded by chattering trolls; not a single one was below teal, as far as he could see. The line was long enough - and the clientele were rich enough - that vendors and performers of all kinds had flocked to them. The smells of sizzling street food and trolls calling prices filled the midnight air.
For once, Hazard was barely tempted by all the food on offer. Instead his eyes flicked between all the trolls around him, and toward his destination.
As Kharak had said, Selatakâs sects didnât let just anyone into their executions or parties, and this was meant to be both. A grand culling fit for the gangster who had vexed them and the policeradicators so often.
He wished heâd gotten a chance to tell Lizzie he was back, but he knew sheâd have a million questions and demand answers. For now it was better he disguised himself with a charm Dicemaker had given him and pretended to be just another blueblood in the crowd.Â
His bulk made him stand out a bit, but his slow, careful demeanor made trolls dismiss and ignore him, happy to gossip with more talkative members of the line or to buy things from the hawkers.Â
Theyâd disguised his voice too, but it was still better to draw as little attention to himself as possible. The clowns couldnât know heâd been here.
Even if they did believe him innocent, he certainly wouldnât be after he was done here.
Hazard, he heard faintly in his head. Sânot in good in there, but not worse than we thought.
Eerie sensation, but at least the voice was one he recognized.Â
Rattus, currently in her natural form.Â
Sheâd explained earlier during their planning session that she really was a rat, magically given the ability to change into a troll, so he guessed the name made sense. Still wild to him in principle, but maybe it wasnât so different from Jikiroâs tanuki lusus.
The reverse shifter had gone ahead to scout inside the circus - specifically, the Moonsâ Eyes compound. They had one of the biggest territories in the city and Chiloa Teroct was happy for any opportunity to express his goodwill toward the other sects by inviting them in with open arms.Â
According to the gossip of the other trolls in line, he even had fireworks planned for after the execution had taken place.
âPretentious prickâ, Hazard could almost hear Plaske scoff in his head as the line finally moved a bit and he took a few steps forward.Â
He wondered what the Dreamweaver leader thought of all this.Â
Would they be here too?
What are their defenses? He finally responded to Rattus, feeling a bit guilty for his straying thoughts.Â
Bunchâa big guards, plenty got clubs but Iâm sure some have guns too. Kharak could take careâa them, but it wonât be quiet, anâ weâre gonna need him for grabbing Pan. Can you do somethinâ with your venom?
He winced reflexively, then remembered she couldnât see him. The temporary communication spell Dicemaker had put on them and Kharak only relayed words, not emotions or facial expressions.
Yes. But Iâm not hurting them more than I need to.
He could practically feel her sigh over the mental link.
Aight. Do it your way, but make sure itâs done, buddy. I got a looong life to live now, anâ I donât wanna waste it gettinâ shivved by a honker.
Long life? But she was maroo - oh, right. He guessed even a maroonâs lifespan would seem long to a wild rat.
He moved again as the line did, and realized with a surge of nervousness that he was close to being let in. Close to having his blood tested and possibly being chucklevoodooedâŠbut Dicemaker had assured him that his protective charm would hold, just as it would for Kharak and Rattus if any clown attempted to use their powers on them.
Hazard hoped very, very hard that the old greenblood was right, or their whole cover could be blown in moments.
He wished the man could have just teleported Panzen out, but Dicemaker had explained that he wasnât a powerful enough mage for that; none of the ones down below were.
You are friends with mages, yes? Heâd remarked when Hazard had bluntly asked him why it couldnât be that simple. Could they achieve such a feat?
The blueblood had realized, being asked such a question, that the answer was almost certainly no. Velourâs skills lay primarily in illusions, and while Jikiroâs ink magic seemed pretty versatile, he was far from all-powerful.Â
Maybe MĂčirne couldâve done it, Hazard reflected as he finally walked up to the bored-looking blood tester, but he was realizing their power set was unusual.ïżœïżœ
âWrist.â Yawned the purpleblood on duty, their ears flicking impatiently.Â
Hazard had always been glad to not have mobile ears. He hardly minded them on others - he found Eirrorâs large round ones quite charming - but they gave away so much in terms of emotion that he was happy to not have that particular tell.
He obediently stuck out his outstretched arm - thick, a pale shade of gray, somewhat sweaty from the usual heat of the city - and the clown briefly took it in their strong fingers, gripping it firmly.
Their claws cut him just a little, a painful but narrow slit; he was sure the pressure wouldâve pierced even a seadwellerâs tough skin. Their expression was so casual and uninterested that they must have done this a thousand times.
They watched a few drops of standard cerulean leak out as their eyes glowed a soft indigo, then waved him onward and washed their claws off in a nearby bowl of water.
Hazardâs shoulders lowered in relief as he walked deeper into the circus, pretending to follow the neon signs that led to the seating set up around the execution stage. He hadnât realized how tense he was.
He let some newly approved trolls jostle around him, and - pretending to look confused - slipped off toward the clusters of guards on the stageâs stairwells instead.
Rattus, he said. If you could be a distraction, I can take care of them.Â
If oneâa them steps on me, you owe me, library boy.
I will. Thank you.
He heard a snort of laughter from her in his head and after a few moments, he saw a brown streak of fur dart through the guards on the left stairwell.
The indigos swore and began swatting at the rodent as she darted among them and nipped at their ankles, evading their grabs and the flails of their clubs. Luckily, enough trolls had poured in that no one was paying much attention to the guards.
This was going to be tricky timing-wise, though, and heâd have to be very careful. Good thing heâd eaten things to boost his venomsâ toxicity before he left the cavern; heâd need as much potency as he could get right now, even if only as a last resort.
Hazard took out a handful of magical sparklers and miniature fireworks, tossing them among the clowns; to anyone watching the purple and gold bursts of light, heâd just seem like a drunk or overenthusiastic celebrator as he dodged around the confused, disoriented purplebloods.
That wouldnât hold them for long. He had seconds.
Rattus, can you cover me?Â
Sure I -
Her voice cut off and his heart sank as - just reaching the top of the stage stairs - he turned back around to see her held by her tail, struggling in a clownâs grip.
He was out of sparklers. Too far to use his venom.
Hazard took a thick dictionary from his sylladex and launched it directly at the clownâs head.
Heâd never been good at aiming, but luckily the troll had tall horns, and they swore as the book crashed into them, allowing the wererat to bite their hand and escape.
Then he heard confused calls and shouting from the stageâs other stairwells and his face drained of color.
Oh no.
He looked at Panzenâs cage in the center - so close, but so far. He wasnât going to be able to unlock it. He wasnât - the clowns were thundering up the steps, he -
Rattus launched her furry body across the stage, fiddled with the lock, and then vanished.
I did it, she said. But Iâm stuck in here with Pan âtil Kharak can make his move. Buy us a minute or weâre toast.
Hazard took in a deep breath.
He waited until all the clown guards converged on him, blessing his current immunity to their powers as their eyes flashed in dozens of colors.
He let it all out in a massive cloud of venom, one so thick and potent it was more akin to fog, and the clowns - eyes unprotected, noses breathing it in, utterly unprepared - began to cry out, shake, and fall, writhing in agony on the stage as the grayish white fog attacked their bodies.
He moved around them as quick as he could, avoiding their flailing limbs to get to Panzenâs cage, and he hoped the cloud hadnât hit him too -
- when a deep, loud growl sounded, and with weak-kneed relief the blueblood almost wept as Kharak leaped in a graceful arc from the audience and landed on the stage, shaking it slightly from the massive hyenaâs impact.
The audience gasped as one.
Panzen burst from his cage and jumped on Kharakâs back.Â
The hyena growled again, even louder and ran again, this time leaping so high he cleared the wall at the back of the stage with only his belly fur lightly brushing the partition.
Then the sky came alive with a burst of lights, crackling in every hue of the hemospectrum, forming...letters?
It seemed to have a transfixing effect on everyone else; no one else rushed to help the prone indigos, no one went after Kharak.
Awed, Hazard couldnât help watching even as he took his chance and hurried away again, wondering who was putting these on; it couldnât be the clowns.
It was only as he hurried past the befuddled blood taker and away to safety that he realized what the fireworks were spelling out, over and over again.
A threat. A promise. A refusal to give in even to the cityâs strongest.
WE WILL PUNISH OUR OWN.

25 ways to save $250 a month that everyone is messing up
Image: Faberr Ink/shutterstock
When it comes to saving money, not every way is the right way. A lot of it depends on your lifestyle and the goals that youve established.
At the same time, there are plenty of mistakes we typically make when it comes to saving like the 25 ways listed below.
1. Not monitoring your budget
When it comes to saving some cash each month, nothing beats a budget. Heres the problem. You base your budget on your fixed expenses like rent, insurance, and utilities. But, what about those unexpected or variable expenses like a trip to the dentist, replacement of your broken iPhone, heat during colder months, the invitation to go on a last-minute weekend vacation, or gifts for birthdays or holidays?
If youve created a budget based on only your fixed month-to-month expenses, then its going to be a lot harder to save accordingly. Instead of saving money each month, youll actually be eating into your savings.
To successfully budget, you have to pay attention to trends and then reshuffle as needed. This way, youll have enough money to cover those unexpected or variable expenses without dipping into your savings. Remember, budgeting is a process. Dont expect to create a budget based on solely on one month. Track your spending over the course of a couple of months so that you can paint a more accurate picture.
2. Spending too much time on being frugal
Another way to save money each month is by being frugal. But, if youre spending more time on monitoring your budget, clipping coupons, or scouring the Internet for the best deal instead of enjoying your life, then its time to reevaluate the situation.
The purpose of saving is so that you have the money to take that family trip, make home improvements, or invest in new business. That doesnt mean that you eliminate the important things in life, such as spending time with your family, just for the sake of saving. By all means, be frugal but not when its consuming too much of your life.
3. Loyalty
When you think about saving money, you most likely think about reducing expenses like going out to dinner less often. But, when was the last time that you compared the rates and deals of your bank, insurance company, the Internet or cell phone provider? Theres a good chance that there are better options available. Switching your cell phone provider, for example, may not save you $250 alone per month, but you may find a plan thats $25 cheaper per month. Add that to your other saving methods and youll be on track to that $250 goal rather easily.
4. Youre uncomfortable
Being frugal doesnt mean that you have to sacrifice the things that you actually need or enjoy occasionally. It means that youre more cognizant of your spending so that you can make better financial decisions. It doesnt mean that you have to be uncomfortable and miserable by missing out on the things that you enjoy or need like that new mattress to replace your uncomfortable and torn-up mattress.
5. Buying on sale just because its on sale
Weve all been guilty of this. We purchase items just because theyre on sale. But, do you really need that new pair of jeans just because theyre 15% off? Instead of spending your money on the things that you dont need just because theyre sale, make a note of the what you do need and then wait for them to go on sale.If youre like most people, this adds up to be over $250 a month.
6. Cooking at home
Make no mistake about it. Cooking at home is definitely more affordable than eating out every night. But, what about the times that you want to make something that calls for ingredients that youll rarely use. Take Paella, for example. While its delicious, theres a chance that the saffron you purchased is going to go to waste.
When grocery shopping, try to think of meals that use similar ingredients so that nothing is going to waste. Another option would be to join something like Blue Apron or Sun Basket since they provide the right amount of ingredients needed for each recipe. Best of all? Plans start at around $10 per serving.
7. You cant let go
Do you have a house full of stuff that you never use but hold onto them because you might need that snow blower even though you live in Florida? Its time to let some of that clutter go. While I understand that you dont want to buy something if you already have it, take stock of the things that you know youll need.
If you keep accumulating stuff, youll potentially run into a situation where you need to rent storage space because you no longer have space in your home to store it. How is that going to help you save money each month?
8. Buying coupons youll never use
There are some incredible deals on Groupon or LivingSocial. But, are you really going to take that yoga class or eat at that new Italian restaurant outside of town before the voucher expires? If so, then purchase the voucher, but if youre uncertain, then skip the deal.
9. You jeopardize your safety
I dont enjoy throwing away food. However, Im not going to put myself or my family at risk by cooking dinner using expired ingredients. If something is bad, its better to chuck it then risk getting a bad case of food poisoning.
10. Signing up for a new credit card just for the rewards
In some instances, credit cards have perks like rewards, cashback on purchases, and 0% percent APR for balance transfers that make them worth considering. Before applying for that new card, review all of the fine print. This applies to businesses as well. The cost of annual fees and high-interest rates may not be worth those perks.
11. Cutting out all activities and socializing
One of the most expensive expenses youll incur is socializing and participating in activities. Instead of becoming a hermit and isolating yourself from your friends or family, make an exception here and there. If you go out for drinks or attend a concert on Friday night, then stay home on Saturday night. Youre still socializing, but youre also being responsible with your money.
12. You never indulge
Just like with socializing, its alright to indulge now and then. It can be used as a reward or help you experience new things. So, if youve brewed your own coffee at home all week, go ahead and stop by Starbucks on Friday morning. You earned it!
13. Youve taken DIY too far
Thanks to Pinterest and YouTube, weve been tricked into thinking that we can do anything from building furniture to repairing our cars. The problem is that this can lead us to potentially do more harm than good.
For example, changing the oil in your car may sound like a good idea, but by the time that you purchase the oil and filters, it may cost you more money than going to a mechanic. Even worse, if youve never changed the oil in your car and make a mistake youll now have an additional expense: paying a mechanic to repair the damage that youve done.
14. Cord-cutting
One of the most popular trends when it comes to saving money is through cord-cutting. The thing is its not for everyone. If you enjoy watching local sports or shows like Game of Thrones, you may end up paying more money each month since youre still paying for Internet service, a local TV package, and a premium channel subscription. Unless youre not a TV-watcher, cord-cutting may not be your best option.
15. Not calculating your retirement
Saving for your retirement is never a bad idea. Going into it blindly is, however. You wouldn't purchase a car or home without knowing how much its going to cost you, right? In order to plan and save for your retirement, you need to first calculate how much youre going to need to set aside each month. NerdWallet has a handy retirement calculator that can help you get started on the right path.
16. Putting money into modest growth plans
One of the biggest mistakes that even the savviest savers make is putting money into modest growth plans, such as low APR savings accounts, CDs, bonds, mutual funds, or simple 401(k)s. Thanks to Fintech, your bank or financial adviser will be able to send you personalized investment recommendations so that you can get the most bang for your buck.
17. Not harnessing the power of Fintech
Speaking of Fintech, financial institutions are using this technology so that you can also automate investing and savings by adjusting your budget and notifying you of any changes in your accounts. You can receive customized financial advice through chatbots to make more informed financial decisions.
18. Avoiding cash
Theres a belief that if you have cash on-hand youll be tempted to spend it. The thing is if you only have $45 in your pocket, you cant spend more than that. However, if youre carrying plastic or a digital wallet downloaded onto your phone, you may be tempted to spend money on stuff that you dont really need. In the end, cash may be the better option to keep you financially disciplined.
19. Not automating your savings
Dedicating a percentage of your paycheck to your savings is a given. However, what happens when you place that echeck into your bank account? After your expenses have been paid, you may be tempted to spend that excess cash. To prevent that from happening, you should automate your savings where a small percentage of your paycheck is withdrawn and transferred to your savings account. This way, youre not spending that excess money since its already been placed into your savings account.
20. Buying cheap, not value
You may think that in order to save $250 a month you have to buy products or service that are the cheapest. Just remember, you get what you pay for. For example, if you need a new pair of sneakers and purchase a pair from a local dollar store, theyre probably not going to last as long as a quality pair of sneakers. Sure, spending over a hundred bucks on a pair of shoes may seem like a tough pill to swallow, but theyre more likely to last you several years. In other words, always go value over price. It will be worth it in the long-run.
21. Buying in bulk
Buying in bulk can be a smart move when it comes to items that you use frequently and wont spoil. For instance, household items like toothbrushes, toilet paper, or light bulbs are cheaper when bought in bulk. Food items are a different story. In fact, food waste costs between $1,365 to $2,275 per year for the average American household. When it comes to perishable items like food, buying bulk isnt always the most cost effective solution.
22. Linking your checking and savings accounts
Gone are the days having only one bank account. Today, there is a wide range of ebanking options for your specific needs. For example, you could use one bank for your main checking account because you arent charged any maintenance or minimum balance fees. However, there could be another bank that has a higher interest rate on saving accounts. By separating these two accounts youre not only avoiding fees and getting a better return, but youre also preventing the chances of spending the money that you've set aside for that emergency fund or savings plan.
23. Assuming theres a quick fix
When you start saving you first look at reducing your spending. Chances are that reducing your trips to Starbucks or changing your cell phone plan arent enough to add up to $250 in savings each month. After that, you make another cut, then another, and then another until you've reached your goal.
The point is when it comes to saving, there aren't just one or two quick fixes. Its a process that takes time.
24. Focusing on saving while considering how to also make more money
Income is arguably the most important factor when it comes to saving. If youre living paycheck-to-paycheck, then how can you put aside a couple hundred of dollars each month? Reducing the amount of money that you spend each month is only part of the solution. The other part is having additional income that can be placed into your savings account.
Thankfully, there are hundreds of ways for you to make some extra cash on the side even if you have a full-time job. Here and there, working some evenings or weekends can help you easily hit that extra $250 per month and maybe even more!
25. Saving solely for needs
Most financial advisers suggest that you save for needs like a new car, health emergency, or college education. While thats sound advice, when you only save for your needs, you tend to get frustrated and resentful of the entire saving process.Instead, set aside some of your savings for something fun, such as a dream vacation or new TV. You earned that money, so make sure that you enjoy from time-to-time and reward yourself for becoming more fiscally responsible.

Gone are the days having only one bank account. Today, there is a wide range of ebanking options for your specific needs. For example, you could use one bank for your main checking account because you arent charged any maintenance or minimum balance fees. However, there could be another bank that has a higher interest rate on saving accounts. By separating these two accounts youre not only avoiding fees and getting a better return, but youre also preventing the chances of spending the money that youâve set aside for that emergency fund or savings plan.
23. Assuming theres a quick fix
When you start saving you first look at reducing your spending. Chances are that reducing your trips to Starbucks or changing your cell phone plan arent enough to add up to $250 in savings each month. After that, you make another cut, then another, and then another until youâve reached your goal.
The point is when it comes to saving, there arenât just one or two quick fixes.
