Artist Analysis - Derik Ridgers

Derik Ridgers is a photographer who specifies in portraiture work. He has been working in the photography industry for over 30 years and is particularly well known for his ‘78-87′ series where he captured the iconic rebellious fashion of the 80′s. This icluded the unique haircuts, tattoos and piercings.

However, the English photographer is also known for his work in film, street culture and music photography.

The 78-87 project was made to emphasise the unique upcoming faashionable trend which occured througout the late 70′s and 80′s.

Derek Ridgers also released a book called ‘Skinheads 1979-1984′. This book focuses on the trends and fashion which was also featured throughout the 70′s and 80′s.

I like how Derek Ridgers frequently uses close up shots to bring out the unique features of the models. This was usually facial tattoos and piercings, extremely short hairstyles and imperfections on both men and women. I think Derek Ridgers used an unusual theme and created some excellent work with it.
