Yo fam are you gonna make a post about how Ezekiel Jones week is coming up
Hello anon,
Well, in case you haven’t noticed I haven’t had much time to take care of this Ezekiel Jones tumblr this season, and I only left the link for Ezekiel Week as an archive of the 2016 week.
I’m not against running it again on the week of the 20th February this time, however it would be better if we had new themes for each day.
So if you guys want me to set up EJAW again, send me some themes (we need seven in total) by February 5th 10pm (CET)
If I receive enough prompts I will assign a theme for each day and publish it on February 6th and then some reminder up until the week begins.
I hope that’s good enough for you, anon.
#ezekiel jones#the librarians#john harlan kim#ejaw 2017#ezekiel jones appreciation week#if i don't receive enough prompts then it means not enough people are interested andin that case i won't bother running it

February Post - Valentine’s Day
How would the cast of Gods’ Rising celebrate Valentine’s Day with their loved one? (not necessarily romantic, despite the holiday name)
Main protagonists first, then minor protagonists, then main antagonists, then minor antagonists. Background characters not included.
Jakob Sullivan - Jakob would offer a simple picnic, perhaps not even outside in a park, and would make treats such as chocolate covered strawberries and fruit kebabs and even shape them into cute, though perhaps deformed, hearts. If outdoors, he’d then offer a game of some sport that can be done in the area. If indoors, he’d put on a film to watch and use the picnic blanket as an actual blanket.
Zlatko Jones - Zlatko would buy a bouquet of flowers, trying to pick one out with his loved one’s favourite colours and/or flowers and even put them in a specially bought vase. He would also make a special dinner - most likely his Eban-approved spaghetti and add special ingredients to make it extra special for Valentine’s Day - followed by a dessert, usually an experimental dish to mix it up a bit.
Charlie Parker - Charlie would take her loved one to karaoke and sing their favourite song, and then would force them to join her midway the song or the next song she sings. She would also buy matching customised shirts for them, or at least something more obvious than a bracelet unless she doesn’t have enough money - then she’ll make them a bracelet using their favourite colours of threads.
Alex Wilson - Alex would take his loved one to a place he loves, whether because it’s secluded, full of good memories or beautiful. He would tell them stories about the place, about his family, his childhood, anything that came to mind. Then he’d tell them how much they mean to him. How happy he is they’re in his life. He’ll make sure they never forget it, but he dedicates Valentine’s Day to this alone.
Kenna Collier - Kenna will meticulously plan the entire day, making sure she has enough money for anything that involves buying things, choosing the best outfit, making sure whatever she buys is at its best - she plans everything. Of course, she cannot plan spontaneity but will (albeit reluctantly) take it all in her stride - she just loves being around her loved one, even if her plans don’t go quite go to... plan.
Klara Lullay - Klara doesn’t show her sorcery to just anyone, you know, so when she uses it to make a special night even more magical for her loved one, you know that she trusts and even admires them. As for what that night actually holds, she’ll cook with them, perhaps even a bit of a food fight, and eat the concoction too with them as well while binge-watching anything they want to, shows or films.
Eban Jones - Eban would enjoy a walk with his loved one. Any time he can get away from his racist town, he’ll take, but Valentine’s Day is special because, when he was younger, his mother and brother would take him on this special hike to a beautiful view every Valentine’s Day. There’s surely not single a better place to show his loved one - a family tradition - that will show that they’re part of the Jones family.
Grace Smith - Grace will take her loved one to the cinema. She’ll sneak in their favourite snacks but still buy the cinema popcorn, as big as she can afford, as well ice cream, if they have it and she has enough. As well as saving up, she’ll beg and plead her dad to give her more money and probably ask her twin brother too. Whatever they watch, probably something easy to make fun of, she’ll enjoy it with them.
Kai Smith - Kai loves simple stuff that is cheap or even free. He’d love just to hang out... but he’d especially love to stargaze with his loved one. Usually the weather is terrible though, so he doesn’t often get to. If he can't, he’ll just sit up by a cliff and look out at the view with his loved one. If he has enough money, he’ll buy ice cream - Ben and Jerry’s, duh - and a bunch of cans of Coke to share, whatever they do.
Maddie Eyighes - Maddie would rather go on a jog with her loved one or go cycling or swimming or literally anything else that keeps her active and out of her foster family’s house; she’d be grateful for the excuse to leave! She’d take her loved one down her favourite routes, whether it’s because of special memories or beautiful sights or because it’s longer and she wants as much time as she can get with them.
Nastasia Lavisco - Nastasia isn’t into affection or gifts. She’d rather give something that matters to her loved one, something she believes they can use. This usually means survival training, something she thinks everyone should have but only Dark Worldians truly need. This may come in form of building shelter, learning how to withstand pain, stitch up injuries. She actually taught everything to Aidan.
Aidan Lavisco - Aidan would try to be as unique as possible. He wants to make a impression, after all, so he’d pay attention to the desires of his loved one. They want to go ice-skating? He’ll take them ice-skating. They want a dinner? He’ll make them what he can. They want to go stargazing? Hell, he’ll take them stargazing. He’ll try to be the best he can be for his loved one - they’re his loved one for a reason.
Valeriya Jones - Valeriya would show that she trusts her loved one by letting them be around her as she works and perhaps even help. She’s not very romantic, preferring conversations, deep talks and working on projects together over big dramatic shows of affection, but she’ll certainly take the day to show them her appreciation by using her time to make a treasured, one of a kind present for them.
Kyle Smith - Kyle doesn’t see himself as having any particular talents but, if it’s a romantic loved one, he’ll write a song or poem to perform for them; he’s also a sucker for holding a stereo above his head and playing music. Even if it’s not romantic, he’ll try show how much he knows about them - play their favourite music, watch their favourite film, eat their favourite food, etc.. One thing is guaranteed - dad dancing.
Tyler Brae - Tyler much prefers to be around his family, so his loved one will usually find themself surrounded by the chaotic group; and so, it should be a nice change of pace on Valentine’s Day when Tyler takes them out on a (mostly) completely secluded meal and a small shopping spree. Ice cream will come after, of course, and then a little chat about how the days, weeks and months before have gone.
Shadow - Shadow... well, kudos to his loved one for gaining that status. He’ll make sure to show how much you matter and just why they’re his loved one. Not one for big shows of affection, Shadow would much rather just make small memories. Maybe a drinking game with others he considers important to him or small feasts, or a trip to a local restaurant with an all-you-can-eat-buffet to enjoy the night away.
Mehmun Salton - Mehmun, in all honesty, doesn’t have a lot of experience with appreciation, whether giving or receiving it. He’d fret for weeks about what to do and probably only calm down with some guidance from said loved one, so in the end, it’ll really be their decision. If they give no help, he’ll buy a gift and a film that he hopes they’ll enjoy. Maybe even watch the film - but only if the loved one wants to.
Preston Sin - Preston seems like he’d have his shit together for Valentine’s Day but, alas, he does not. He would offers beautiful flowers and then panic, worrying if they give off sexual, or at the very least romantic, intent, especially if the loved one receiving flowers is not so romantically. He’ll take them out on a shopping spree and would definitely make an outfit for them out of whatever they bought.
Maggie Snare - Maggie seems to be able to read her loved ones’ minds. Well, not quite, but she knows that flowers, chocolate covered strawberries and a trip out (to a shopping centre or a bar or a club) tend to go a long way. Sure, she’ll give gifts that won’t see the next sunrise but Maggie knows that those blended perfectly with memories that’ll last a lifetime and longer will certainly make for a fun time.
Ezekiel Fortunato - Ezekiel may seem to be sex-and-romance-oriented; while he is and may seem to prioritise them, he is also just as fond of familial and platonic relationships. If faced with a loved one who cannot be given gifts that could be perceived as romantic, he will joke that 'him being there' is the reward before giving them something like a homemade item of jewellery or a scrapbook - something very Ezekiel.
Luke Fortunato - Luke is an avid believer that a picnic in a beautiful location is just as good as any material item. He will make small versions of favourite meals of his loved one for the picnic and bring all sorts of other goods to appreciate. Once they've used the sights as much as possible, he'll drive them along a long, scenic route to a store and buy the two of them ice cream to eat as they drive home - well, Luke will have to wait.
Kiyoshi Kornai - Kiyoshi, for the most part, isn't used to affection - giving or receiving. So when the holiday comes along, all she can offer is freedom. She knows how liberating it can be to be outside, unconstrained by societal norms, the claustrophobic buildings and people's expectations, so she'll take them as far away from the world as she can. Perhaps a drive along the beach or swim in the sea will suffice.
Amber Miller - Amber will trash talk the holiday every other day but the day itself? Will aggressively go all out as much she can, if it's affordable or possible. She'll definitely want to show her appreciation for her loved one. She'd achieve this by meeting them in town and going shopping, buying food and drinks and sightseeing. She'd document the entire day in pictures and look at them whenever she's sad.
Johnny Miller - Johnny will be too nervous to go all out for their loved one. They'll organise a meet-up but won't go as far as their twin. A cinema trip to watch a bad film and then to a coffee shop for a good coffee and a long chat. They'll happily talk about anything, whether it's a sweet, simple topic about a cute dog or favourite cat breeds or something more serious like politics or the news, and will just be happy for the company.
Damien Roth - Damien does not think he has a loved one. Most of the time, anyone at his side as an ally is a means to an end - a vessel, a vessel turned soldier or someone he has made a deal with to get his way. Most 'loved ones' are pawns, but he understands that bribery and behaviour training may be necessary. So he will pay attention and reward allies, especially on this holiday, and customise their reward.
Ayla - Ayla knows she, despite best efforts, is in a vulnerable place - as a tyrant, she wears a target on her back with arrogance but also knows that if she treats her guards and servants well, they will be conflicted and unlikely to listen to her enemies, let alone join them. She will give clothes and accessories as materialistic gifts amongst wealthy food and luxuries. They may not be loved ones, but she'll let them think they are.
Loki Lullay - Loki has not had a loved one for a while, as he gave no reason for them to stay. In his saner days, and even for a short while after, he cared a lot more. He would teach his loved one to sing or play his mother's guitar, giving tips and demonstrating what to do next, indulging his loved one in the Lullay history of music and song. But those days are long gone along with his mind and any thoughts unfocused on revenge.
Malcolm Gull - Malcolm is not a callous man, though now there are few he truly cherishes outside his group of Magic Hunters. He’ll treat them to a morning of hunting and then an afternoon of relaxation - eating by a fire, singing songs and sharing campfire stories, whether it's real or fiction (when you've nearly abandoned civilised life to kill sorcerers, it's harder to tell). An evening will go similarly, but with lots more booze!
Nico Angel - Nico no longer trusts loved ones, but he also understands that what made him not trust them was his fault. If he was still in contact with his former loved ones, on Valentine’s Day he would treat them well. He would show them he cared by taking them on an adventure, their own personal little trip into the unknown and explore with them. But now, he is alone. He has no loved ones to explore the world with.
Davey Sullivan - Davey has a rather warped sense of love. He doesn't conform to conventions because no such conventions were established to him in his sheltered, controlled childhood and life. He expresses love through a similar control, which may cause belief that he doesn't trust his loved ones. It's true. He does not trust them to make their own decisions in life, because he was never trusted to make his own.
Aerron Yelad - Aerron grew up with two types of love - breaking love and beneficial love. But he has been welcomed into a new love - love itself. On this day, he will try to give back the love he has been given back. He will make small but meaningful presents that reflect who they are to be gifted to in a way, and they will also be given to those who have given him a bad love. It's fair, after all, to at least try.

1x03 and the Horns of a Dilemma: the first true Casekiel moment will be forever in my heart
1x05 and the Apple of Discord: you knew I was going to put this ep here as well! Because, come on! When he hides - under the table and kinda behind Jenkins? #relatable - and when he looks at that tall woman (can’t remember if they were all dragons or not) and when he exclaims “Oh, come on! This is just a bunch of consonants!” and Jenkins drags him away I laughed so much!
1x09 and the City of Lights: “Is she ok?” “Yeah, she’s mad at me, she’s fine” #lol
2x01 and the Drowned Book: because I just love when Mom!Eve grabs him
2x05 and the Hollow Men: Admit it, y’all laughed at his “Got it! - Dropped it!”
2x06 and the Infernal Contract: because his love-hate relationship with Jenkins needs to be here too and I like him batting his eyelashes, sue me
2x07 and the Image of Image: more pure Casekiel
4x03 and the Christmas Thief: because he’s so sweet! Also, I couldn’t find the gif of the jumping of the lasers, but, you know, that was hot and it never hurts

No Rest for the Ex-Thief
Fandom: The Librarians
Rating: General/sfw
Relationship: Jazekiel
Word Count: 1984
Ezekiel attempts to head home for the night after an exhausting day, but Stone’s got something he wants to talk about first.
Set a little after “And the Christmas Thief.”
Also posted on my Ao3.
-----
After the impromptu Christmas/Welcome Back party for Eve, Flynn, and Jenkins, Ezekiel was ready to fall face first in his bed and sleep for the next week. Of course, a certain cowboy wasn't going to let him have his well deserved rest.
He knew Stone had followed him. Ezekiel had ducked out of the party before the eye contact could grow into something more than a quick glance, but he didn't bother acknowledging it, hoping he could actually sneak out and avoid whatever Stone clearly wanted to say. He enjoyed the growing silence as the Christmas music from Jenkins’s records faded the farther they walked, replaced with the surprisingly matched, rhythmic footfalls from both of them.
Stone apparently couldn't hold in his question any longer once they got to the main room in the Annex. Jones...can I talk to you for a bit?”
Ezekiel slowly turned around, hoping Stone would see how tired he was and would drop it. Either Stone couldn't tell he was exhausted, or was ignoring it; he gently, but firmly, grabbed Ezekiel’s arm before he could back up far enough out of Stone's reach.
“Ezekiel, please, it won’t be long.”
Ezekiel raised an eyebrow at his first name. No one but Cassandra ever called him by it unless it was serious. “Okay, but make it quick. I've had a hell of a day.”
Stone snorted, smiling a little before going serious again. “I’m...sorry about earlier, with the whole chasing you around and stuff. It was, uh, well, I certainly didn't expect you to be on your knees begging.”
He may have been tired, but Ezekiel couldn’t resist poking a little fun at him. “Bet you enjoyed that sight, cowboy,” Ezekiel smirked.
Momentarily stunned, Stone’s mouth attempted to form some words, but never made it to saying them. Ezekiel decided to give him a moment to recover. “It won't happen again, the whole bringing people in the Library who can steal things. I learned my lesson.”
“What I was going to say was I'm apologizing because if I had done something stupid, I’d want to keep it hidden from Baird and them too. It's unfair of me to act like I would be all upfront and truthful about it,” Stone clarified, looking anywhere but at Ezekiel until he finished his statement.
Ezekiel blinked, not sure how to respond to the sincerity. “Uh, thanks, apology accepted?” With all the bearing of his desperation to Cassandra and Stone, and his past to his mom, his brain decided he didn't need to think before he spoke. “If anything, I should be the one apologizing for dragging you guys into my mess,” Ezekiel started, mimicking Stone's lack of eye contact, “and probably for the spontaneous kiss of gratefulness that I about gave you, which you clearly weren't in to.”
Stone, once again mildly shocked, attempted to say something; it took a few tries, but he got there. “Well I mean, I was concerned and confused because you were acting really weird, and you coming at me, well I was shoving you away before I realized, and then-" He shut his mouth like he had said too much already, but before Ezekiel could even think of a response, Stone continued, “not that I'm-I don't care who you like an’ all, it just...uh...startled me.”
Ezekiel laughed, more at himself than at Stone, as he leaned against a desk. “Not how I intended to come out.”
“Thanks for trusting me with this,” Stone said, sitting on the edge of the desk.
“It’s not like it’s a secret,” Ezekiel retorted a bit more aggressively than he intended. Ezekiel was having a bit of a hard time managing Stone’s raw caring, so he intently stared at his clasped, fidgeting hands in front of him. “I mean, before I came to the Library, I didn’t bother hiding. Thieves don’t really care about stuff like that. I didn’t mean to hide it here, but I dunno, it never came up, so I never said anything.” He looked up to see Stone watching him like he was afraid of doing something to make Ezekiel bolt.
Suddenly Stone being a few feet away from him was too close. Ezekiel stood up slowly, careful to not startle Stone into grabbing his arm again. He relieved his sudden need to move by pacing in front of the desk, hoping he wouldn’t let anything slip about why he hadn’t actually said anything. It wasn’t like he could tell Stone that he had a crush on him, and after the whole Cassandra and Estrella thing, he hoped something could happen.
He realized he spent the last thirty seconds silently pacing, so he stopped and turned to Stone. That concerned look from earlier, which Ezekiel last saw when he was on his knees begging, was creeping back onto the cowboy’s face. “It’s not that I don’t trust you guys. I guess, I didn’t want to deal with...a bad reaction.” Ezekiel kicked himself for hesitating, because he knew Stone saw right through it, though what Stone saw he didn't know.
Stone shook his head. “You know we wouldn’t, especially Cassandra. What’s the real reason?” Ezekiel wanted to explain, give in to his feelings, but his throat strongly protested forming any words related to it. “You don’t have to talk if you don’t want, I get it, it’s personal. But I’m always here for you, know that,” Stone continued. “I know it might not be a big deal to you, but hiding yourself isn’t healthy...I should know.”
Ezekiel froze, confused look on his face clear as day. Hope welled in his chest, but he shoved it back down. “At least we can appreciate your brains more than your dad ever would,” Ezekiel said, hoping Stone would confirm that’s what he was talking about so Ezekiel’s heart could chill out.
Maybe Ezekiel had too much of Jenkins’s eggnog, but he could've sworn Stone deflated a little like Ezekiel missed something. Fortunately for Ezekiel, Stone wasn’t going to leave him wondering. “I wasn’t talking about my talent.”
“Oh,” was all Ezekiel could manage. Any exhaustion was now flushed out of his veins; he sat on the edge of the desk, mirroring Stone, to prevent his knees from wobbling from the hope rushing in full force.
Stone bit his lip, breathing deep before explaining. “I didn’t tell anyone for a long time. Growing up in Oklahoma, I thought I was broken...wrong. Pop sure couldn't find out I liked boys too, I’d be deader than dead. So I kept it hidden, played my part, stayed safe. But you know what happened?” Stone waited for Ezekiel to shake his head. “Someone decided to trust me with their secret. When Slaten came out to me, I realized I didn’t have to be so scared, I had someone who trusted me with something I was afraid of even admitting to myself.”
Realization flooded Ezekiel’s head as he remembered his interactions with Slaten. The looks, the concern, the care, it all made so much sense. Apparently Stone realized Ezekiel was having an epiphany; he smiled at him, chuckling a little before continuing. “We had a thing, for awhile, but Slaten wasn’t comfortable with me continuing to isolate myself by not leaving, especially as he watched me waste my extraordinary talent by being an oil rigger.”
Ezekiel whistled. “No wonder you were so grouchy about not having connections outside the Library. He’s a good dude,” Ezekiel found himself saying, but he couldn’t help feeling a bit sad Stone had feelings for another man.
“That he is,” Stone exhaled. “I can’t say I’m willing to give this life up, but I know it’d make him damn proud to know what I’m doing.” Stone stood up, apparently ready to head back to the Christmas party.
“I’m proud of you,” Ezekiel blurted. He wasn’t sure if he was trying to get Stone to stay or if he was immensely glad Stone just trusted him with something only one other person apparently knew. Either way, it got Stone to stop in his tracks and look at Ezekiel. “It’s not like I can give you shit for having a comfy facade. I know how hard it is to finally feel safe enough to let it go completely.” Ezekiel stood up, sudden rush of bravery fueling him. “And, I know what it’s like to want something you can’t have.”
Stone raised his eyebrows, gears clearly turning in his head. “Do ya now? And what makes you think you can’t have him?” Stone asked, voice getting tauntingly husky as he talked. Ezekiel’s eyes went wide, jaw a bit slack in shock. Stone couldn’t help but snicker at him. “If there’s anything you should take away from our talk, is that sometimes a little step in faith goes a long way.”
Cocky Ezekiel finally decided to return. “To be fair, it would’ve been a lot easier if you hadn’t shoved me away. You can’t go giving mixed signals like that, mate.” Stone looked genuinely abashed for a moment, but Ezekiel didn’t let him suffer long. “Hmm, how convenient Cassandra made you put that mistletoe up above the door...maybe you could redeem your mistake.”
Stone held his hand out to Ezekiel. “Gladly, if you’ll let me.”
Ezekiel waited a moment before grabbing his hand, trying to hide just how eager he was. “Oh, definitely,” Ezekiel said as Stone led him to the doorway, a bit breathier than he intended. Stone didn’t seem to mind at all as he cupped Ezekiel’s face with his hands, looking at the ex-thief so fondly it was making Ezekiel want to melt onto the floor; it was enough to get Ezekiel to close the small distance between them before Stone could actually kiss him.
After a few moments Stone pulled away slightly. “Hey, I was supposed to be kissin’ you.”
“Heh, sorry, got a bit, carried away,” Ezekiel said, slightly out of breath because he’d forgotten to breathe. “But, uh, you can do that now.”
Stone gave an amused huff mixed with what Ezekiel thought sounded almost like a growl, then kissed him.
Ezekiel wasn’t exactly sure how long they spent doing that, but it was long enough to have Stone press him against the door frame by the time Flynn cleared his throat down the hall, making them both jump. Stone backed off of him a bit, but was still quite close, nothing like his reaction to the attempted grateful kiss earlier.
“I, uh, told Eve you two were fine, but she made me go check anyway and…” Flynn rambled, face turning a bit red.
“It’s fine, Flynn,” Stone said, reaching out for Ezekiel’s hand. “We were just heading back.” He glanced at Ezekiel, waiting for a response.
Ezekiel thought for a moment before taking Stone’s hand, wondering maybe if he stayed a bit longer, he could get a certain cowboy to come home with him. The train of thought quickly went to some areas that made Ezekiel blush without realizing it, earning a knowing grin from Stone.
“Sure you were,” Flynn retorted, glancing at their hands. “I mean, heh, um, uh, coming, Eve!” The Librarian quickly turned on his heels and sped back into the Library as if he’d been called, though there definitely had been no call.
Ezekiel started walking after him, but Stone stayed put, yanking him back slightly. “You okay with this? I know it’s a lot, even with people you trust,” Stone said.
“What? I’m definitely okay with this. I’m sooo okay with his you wouldn’t believe,” Ezekiel replied, internally kicking himself when he heard how giddy he was. He felt a little better when Stone chuckled and squeezed his hand.
“Alright. Let’s go make everyone’s night, then.”
They certainly made everyone’s night, but especially Cassandra, who conspicuously received ten dollars from a slightly disappointed, but happy nonetheless Jenkins.
-----
Post Notes: I have no clue why season 4 is providing so much fodder for ships and backstory like this...but I’m not gonna question it one bit. And or course Slaten is mentioned, I mean he knew about Stone's brain...there had to be something there, one sided or reciprocated.
Stone’s history of hiding in Oklahoma is sort of fueled by my experience. Growing up in the Bible Belt, being anything other than cishet is a scary, confusing thing. I thought I was messed up for a long while, then finally came to terms with myself when I found a term that actually fit who I was, and I felt a lot better when I finally came out as non-binary to my best friend. Seriously, if you can safely share who you are, it’s like a weight off your shoulders.

Little Ezekiel
Set just after the Christmas Thief episode, this one sorta ties into Basically Nothing that I wrote like two years ago. I loved getting to know more about Ezekiel’s backstory and I always have fun writing for these two, hope you enjoy.
Merry Christmas LITs~.
Cassandra enters the Annex from the Main Library, but halts when she sees Ezekiel at the table. She rests against the doorframe as she studies him. He’s bent over his phone, a book open to his left. This is the first time she’s had a moment alone with him since Christmas Eve. They’ve been hit with case after case, not just saving the world twice before Friday. This week, they’ve saved the world four times before Friday.
She doesn’t want to disturb the peace, but there’s been something weighing on her mind. “Ezekiel?”
The boy glances up at her and a small smile breaks the serious expression he’d been wearing. “Hey, was just reading up on something.”
The thing she wanted to ask him slips her mind for a second. “What is it?” She joins him at the table and peers over his shoulder. “Is that something in the Saint’s collection?”
Ezekiel shakes his head. “I’m good, not crazy. I don’t want to deal with him anymore.” He dog ears the page and closes the book on the sculpture he’d been researching. Then Ezekiel turns to her, giving her his undivided attention. “What do you need?”
“Help finding that collection on gargoyle mythology.” Ezekiel flinches at the mention of gargoyles. “Sorry,” she winces, “I forgot how touchy it still is.”
He shakes it off and gets to his feet, quickly tapping on his phone screen. Cassandra knows that he’s been trying to make the Library digital, but it’s a whole feat of its own that the thief must not have time for. However, he seems to have had enough time to catalogue the book she’s looking for, because he heads towards the second floor. She trails after him up the steps and waits patiently as he flicks through the stacks. Ezekiel appears before her with a smile on his face and the exact book she was looking for being offered with both hands.
Cassandra’s eyes catch sight of his phone screen, which is underneath the book as she takes it away. The screen fades to black, but not before she sees the background photo of Ezekiel and his mom in the sleigh. Cassandra knows his lock screen is of the two of them and Jake. She wonders if the background of his apps has always been his mother. She never thought to notice.
The second floor gives her the privacy to ask the question that had been on her mind the past few days. “Hey, can I ask you something else?” She tucks the book underneath her arm.
Ezekiel shrugs. “Sure, I guess.”
“Your mother?”
His face quickly rearranges into something akin to horror. “Oh. Cassandra. No.”
“But I’ve met her now, surely i can ask a few questions.”
“No, no, no,” Ezekiel says as he scoots by her and heads towards the stairs.
“You just never let on that–”
“La, la, la, I’m not listening.”
“Ezekiel Jones, stop being a baby and talk to me!” she exclaims.
Ezekiel whirls around. “I don’t want to talk about her, Cassandra. Can we–”
“I just want to know more about her. I want to know about you.”
“Then ask about me. I don’t want to talk about her.”
She tips her head. “It’s hard to separate the two, don’t you think? If I want to know about little Ezekiel.”
Ezekiel frowns. “No one wants to know about him.”
Cassandra steps towards him. “But I do,” she says softly. And she isn’t lying. Ever since she stayed over at his place almost three years ago, she’s had this want. She wants to know Ezekiel more and while she does know their resident thief well, there’s a wall she hasn’t been able to break through. “Humour me.”
Ezekiel sighs, because it’s so hard to say no to Cassandra. He leans against the railing over looking the Annex and she joins him there. The book rests on the railing, her arms over top of it. Her patience with Ezekiel is always high, so she waits him out.
When he speaks again, his voice is soft, his accent thicker than usual. “Mum picked me up off the streets. I couldn’t stand foster care, so I ran away. I’d been on the streets for about three weeks when she found me. I don’t think I would’ve lasted much longer. I think I was 7 or 8 when she offered me a place to stay. By then, she already had a full house.”
“Because of your sisters.”
“Yeah,” Ezekiel agrees. “Charity, Honour, and Mercy took me in as if I was their actual little brother. We were all street kids; we knew what it was like to have no one.”
Cassandra listens as Ezekiel shares the stories he hasn’t shared with anybody else. She learns about the bullying at school, how kids made fun of the clothes he wore because his mother couldn’t afford more.
“She stole those clothes and I wasn’t going to ask for more,” Ezekiel explains.
Ezekiel shows her a scar on his right side from when some kids had kicked him before a teacher found them on the playground. He vowed then to never feel that humiliation ever again. Cassandra wants to reach out and squeeze his hand then, but Ezekiel is speaking as if she isn’t there anymore. In her mind, she watches Ezekiel age from the bullied child to the master thief he’s become. She imagines the ridicule from his older sisters when he appeared to be a failure at the family business.
“Mum never gave up on me though. Even if she thought I was a complete failure as a thief.”
The stories aren’t just about his mother and how she was lacking in all aspects, but also how big a heart she had.
“Sure, we’re a family of thieves, but she taught me that when you have nothing, you can still take in as many people as your heart will let you. She took the four of us in when she clearly could not afford it, but I didn’t really go hungry. Yeah, sometimes the food was terrible, but back then, beggars couldn’t be choosers.”
Cassandra and Ezekiel stand there in silence as they overlook their work environment. They both still consider it a new job, because the fact that they work for this magical building will always feel surreal.
“Why did you never tell her who you were?” Cassandra asks.
“What do you mean?”
“Like, never tell her you were the Ezekiel Jones. If you wanted her respect, you would have gotten it being the world-class thief you are. Why wait so long?”
Ezekiel ponders this question. In this moment, she studies him, appreciating the person he’s become; but also appreciating the person she never realized he always was. The good person she knows Ezekiel Jones to be now was always there.
“You heard her,” he says suddenly. “She was greedy, probably because she always had to steal to get what she wanted and to feed us. Mum would have definitely taken advantage of the fact that I’m as good as I am.”
There. In his voice. The Ezekiel Jones she first met had an egotistical undertone, but now he’s just stating a fact.
“Why are you smiling at me like that?” Ezekiel asks.
“It’s just…” She reaches for his hand and squeezes his fingers. “I understand how she raised such a good kid. And I understand the respect you have for her, even if you say she was a bad mother.”
“Let’s be real, Cassandra, she was,” he laughs, his eyes crinkling up in that way of his.
She laughs and knocks her shoulder into his. Cassandra finds her arm resting against his. “I know, but… no mother is perfect.” Her eyes lift to meet his. “And yours wasn’t, but you turned out… good.” She’d caught his gaze drift to her lips while she’d been talking. She swallows the lump in her throat.
His breath fans over her face and she’s suddenly very aware of the cologne he’s wearing. It was something Jenkins had gifted everyone at Christmas. The molecules in the perfume bind differently with each person who wears it, pulling the base notes in everyone’s skin. She finds that Ezekiel’s scent is dizzying.
The two of them jump apart when Jake runs into the room. “Guys! We gotta get to Nanjing. Cassie, you brush up on your Mandarin lately?”
She looks to Ezekiel, whose gaze is as soft as hers. It holds promise of further conversations, conversations she won’t have to wait three years to have, and then she looks down at Jake. “我记, 管他呢。(I remember, don’t worry.)”
“好。 我们走吧。(Good. Let’s go.)” Jake waits for them at the bottom of the stairs. “We’ll do the gargoyle research later. That one can wait.”
Cassandra leaves the book on the table while Ezekiel moves next to Jake. “What? The gargoyles are just gonna wait to kill us later?” Ezekiel asks as Jenkins walks into the Annex to dial up the Door for them.
Jake snorts. “Doesn’t matter what the gargoyles plan to do. You’ll probably adopt all of them and take them in and we won’t have to worry about it anyway.” Jake rushes through the Back Door first.
Cassandra gives Ezekiel a knowing smile. His attachment to animals and things that nobody wants, now she understands where it comes from.
